Don’t know where all the 5 star reviews came from on this book. It reads like it was written by a ninth grader. Riddled with grammatical errors, endless repetition, poorly structured. I definitely do not recommend reading this book, rather read one of the original pieces on Stoicism. Just to save you the pain I went through here is the summary:
The Stoics originated in Ancient Greece and was first created by a wealthy aristocrat who lost all his wealth in a shipwreck, Zeno of citium. The ideas were proliferated through Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus and Seneca. The Stoics believe in god, although god is the natural consciousness of the universe. A key Stoic principle is that you should “live by nature” meaning live a virtuous life governed by morals and principals. The basic Stoic principles are: 1. You can only control your inner response to external events. 2. Your emotions are based on your judgement of an event. You can change the way you judge an event and therefore change your emotions. 3. Live by virtue. The four cardinal virtues to Stoics are: wisdom, justice, courage, temperance. Practical Stoic exercises: 1. Negative visualizations - visualize not having the things you have to better prepare yourself for that eventuality. 2. Use affirmations of quotes from stoic practitioners daily and reflect on your day using a “philosophical journal”
That is literally all that’s in this book aside from some waffling on random connections between Buddhism and Stoicism.
