When the animal shelter where Nancy volunteers burns down, she and her friends put on a concert to raise funds for rebuilding the shelter. Someone's trying to foil their plans, however--but they picked the wrong gal to mess with.
Carolyn Keene is a writer pen name that was used by many different people- both men and women- over the years. The company that was the creator of the Nancy Drew series, the Stratemeyer Syndicate, hired a variety of writers. For Nancy Drew, the writers used the pseudonym Carolyn Keene to assure anonymity of the creator.
Edna and Harriet Stratemeyer inherited the company from their father Edward Stratemeyer. Edna contributed 10 plot outlines before passing the reins to her sister Harriet. It was Mildred Benson (aka: Mildred A. Wirt), who breathed such a feisty spirit into Nancy's character. Mildred wrote 23 of the original 30 Nancy Drew Mystery Stories®, including the first three. It was her characterization that helped make Nancy an instant hit. The Stratemeyer Syndicate's devotion to the series over the years under the reins of Harriet Stratemeyer Adams helped to keep the series alive and on store shelves for each succeeding generation of girls and boys. In 1959, Harriet, along with several writers, began a 25-year project to revise the earlier Carolyn Keene novels. The Nancy Drew books were condensed, racial stereotypes were removed, and the language was updated. In a few cases, outdated plots were completely rewritten.
Other writers of Nancy Drew volumes include Harriet herself, she wrote most of the series after Mildred quit writing for the Syndicate and in 1959 began a revision of the first 34 texts. The role of the writer of "Carolyn Keene" passed temporarily to Walter Karig who wrote three novels during the Great Depression. Also contributing to Nancy Drew's prolific existence were Leslie McFarlane, James Duncan Lawrence, Nancy Axelrod, Priscilla Doll, Charles Strong, Alma Sasse, Wilhelmina Rankin, George Waller Jr., and Margaret Scherf.
This was a crazy mystery for the famed teenage sleuth...but I enjoyed it! I can't wait until I can get another Apple gift card so I can buy more of these books!
I read this Nancy Drew mystery and I thought it was pretty good. Not one of my favorites, but it wasn’t horrible!
From the very beginning, I was suspicious of David Wells and Peter Paint Guy from the evidence in the book. I thought they had something to do with the crime, especially since Peter Paint didn’t exist and I thought that he was somehow connected to David Wells.
I thought that Nancy, Bess, George and Ned (Nancy especially), because they were willing to help the town’s animal shelter by hosting and setting up a benefit concert. That is more than the adults in the town and animal shelter workers and owners were going to do! And these are kids! They have a life and they know it is going to be hard work but they were up for the challenge. They were determined and I liked that. I envy them for being such leaders!
When I was introduced to Deirdre, I didn’t like her from the start. She was cold hearted and she was a manipulator. She was trying to steal Ned from Nancy, knowing that Ned and Nancy were going out. She was also trying to steal the spotlight from Nancy and act like she really cared about the animal shelter which she didn’t. Nancy didn’t really care about the spotlight but still, it is what it is.
I thought that Nancy was being too sweet about the whole thing with Ned and Deirdre. Ned is too sweet to say know about going to the prom with Deirdre and helping her but enough is enough! Yes, being sweet is good but going out with another girl? Ned has got to learn how to say no! If I were Nancy, I would have put my foot down and tell Ned that he doesn’t stop hanging out with Deirdre, it was over!
In the end, Nancy was right from the beginning. David Wells and his chew toy, Stefan were behind the whole thing. The book was good overall, even though it was too easy for me. The only thing that I disliked was that Chief McGinnis believed Nancy right away about David Wells and Stefan and they got arrested so quickly, meanwhile Nancy was on his bad side. That only took a page! So, I give this book a four out of five stars!

I honestly don't know how much to rate this ND book, but three is good as there are some things I liked about it. I liked that it was fast paced and Nancy's enthusiasm to save the animal shelter, but there are some things I just didn't like about it. There were a couple of errors in this ND book that I wasn't happy about. This author did not do a good job capturing Nancy's character right. First of all, Nancy never jumps to conclusions. She jumped to conclusions many times in this book. Also, I didn't like that she snuck out of the house in the middle of the night. I wasn't happy with her doing that. Sure, I understand that she just wanted to find the culprit and save the shelter but still... There were many things in this ND book that was making me mad. For instance, doesn't Carson support Nancy in her sleuthing? In this one, he didn't want her to be involved in the mystery because Chief McGiniss wanted her to stay away. Why does Carson have take his side? Speaking of Chief McGiniss, I know that he's mean in the Girl Detective series, but in this book it was a bit extreme, which I didn't like. He arrested Nancy for something she didn't do! Also, he accused her many times. Finally, Ned. Don't get me wrong, I'm a Ned fan but he annoyed me a lot in this book. He didn't seem to be helping Nancy much. He spent most of his time with Deirdre Shannon ( sure, I get that he was too nice to say no but still! if I was in his place I would just tell her no!), that idiot snob who was soooo annoying the whole time in the book. She was extreme in this book, ruining things for Nancy! While reading it, there were times when I just felt like throwing this book across the room. Some things just angered me! It wasn't an 'I hate it' book, though. I liked it, but not so much. Many things annoyed me!
I actually found this one really amusing, the beginning totally threw me and I giggled a bit afterwards at the absurdity of it. I read this one as quickly as I could and greedily because where there are animals' well beings concerned I just have to know how it turns out. Even if it's fictional animals. Apart from that the story in this one was quite good and the twists and turns were unexpected but I loved how persistent Nancy was, even when all these people -her father, the chief of police, the criminal even! -told her to cool it she continued pursuing those leads and saved the day!
