A niche subject to be sure yet the content profoundly affects one’s theology.
This is a philosophically heavy and technical text. The author freely quotes from French and German sources, and also expects his readers to read Greek and understand Platonic concepts.
If you’re interested in the thought of St. Maximus the Confessor and Neoplatonism, then this is an excellent resource. Perl gives a great deal of space to elucidate Neoplatonic thought (Proclus), and shows its influence on early Church thinkers (Psuedo-Dionysus and Gregory of Naziansus). From that philosophical and theological foundation, he summarises Maximus’ engagement with those ideas and how it developed his ideas on God and creation and their union in Christ.
