What if you went off to fight for what's right, and someone told your sweetheart you'd died? What if that same person told you that she was dead too? What if that man up and married her? After secretly killing her family? And what if that man was the brother you trusted? And what if, one day, you came home?
A story of trickery and cunning, of brotherhood and truth, and of war. Of bandits and shootouts and justice, and of doing what's right. Of a tall man who slithered, and a dwarf who stood tall as the clouds, and became Billy's friend. It's the story of how Billy Ray becomes Billy Fyre — and how, seven long years after being told he'd lost everything, finally, Billy comes home, to fight for what's his.
Another action packed Western with a hint of romance, from the pen of J.V. James – and as usual, more twists and turns than you can shake a Winchester at.
Two brothers different mothers, but same father. Billy Ray the youngest and Horace (Horrie)Ray oldest and Billy's step brother. As you read you'll start to sense sibling rivalry, especially Horace who totally resented Billy. Horace Ray and his childhood friend Jasper Jenkins, whose father at that time was the Sheriff of Cottonwood Falls, Missouri. John Ray, the father of both sons, loved them both, but Billy was his favorite. Evidently, John Ray truly loved his second wife who died giving birth to Billy. Billy was a sweet obedient son, whom everyone liked. Horace Ray wasn't liked at all, in fact, he was a nasty backstabbing murderer. Later you'll read how diabolically evil Horace really is with his evil cohort Jasper. They set fire to many local farms, especially those where the railroad would be building tracks through. Lot's of money to be made, and Horace and Jasper were right in front hustling and committing murder. Horace pulled a gun on his father and his real intentions was to get rid of his brother Billy. These fools murdered the MacPherson family, shot the father Tom and raped the mother and daughter all because the daughter Cass and her sister Annie who both, worked and took care of widow Mary Brown didn't or weren't interested in Horace or Jasper, so the two burned their farm. They both lied about the fire by saying they came upon the farm and the cabin was totally consumed by flames. That was told to the Sheriff and John Ray, neither believing what Horace said. Billy Ray goes to join "The War Of Succession" and his brother Horace writes a letter to Billy saying that Cass was burned up with the the rest of her family and their father John never wanted to see him again. A letter written of cruelty and lies mailed to his brother, who after reading the letter decided he had nothing to live for and hoped that he would die while fighting for the cause. This author points out a lot of human frailties and no matter how harsh life is, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. This is a western with a twist that's both sensitive and insensitive and sibling rivalry, but it still teaches a lesson of "love" of family will pull you through, doesn't necessarily have to be your immediate family, but family.
Billy Ray was 17 when he ran off to join the war effort, despite the fact that he couldn't shoot straight and didn't like killing things. He said a tender goodbye to his sweetheart Cass, stole his father's rifle and off he went. He had a run in with some road agents along the way. He ended up accidently shooting the leader in the foot, killing another and blinding another with a ricochet shot. He hauled them all into the nearest town where Sheriff Brimstone let him know they had a bounty on them. His son Morris, taught Billy Ray how to shoot straight, so he headed off to war. Meanwhile, Billy's brother Horace was the devil in sheep's clothing. He and his buddy Jasper Killed Cass' family and burned down their house to make it look like an accident. Then he wrote Billy Ray and told him Cass had died in the fire too. Billy Ray was reading that letter while waiting to enlist, so when they asked his name he just said Fire. That's how he became Billy Fyre. Horrace then had a letter sent to their pa, John Ray, saying Billy Ray died in the war effort. It's 7 years later and Billy Ray and Morris are Deputy US Marshals. Together they head back to Billy's home. Surprise!
The adventures of Billy Ray for 7 years during the civil war before and after
Billy Ray had a very evil brother Horace who wrote very evil letters to Billy telling him lies to keep him away from the ranch as Horace was so jealous of Billy. He also made the sheriff right a fake letter to his dad saying that Billy had died in the war which was very untrue. He blackmailed the sheriff into doing it and told the sheriff lies and threatened him to boot. No one knew the truth of the matter so the whole town thought that Billy was dead. And this was after Horace and his buddy killed Cass's family after they rate the women first they burn down the house and put everybody inside to make it look like they just had a house burning while they were asleep. This is after they shot them all first. Horace was a very bad man.
This book was just the right balance of heartbreak, mysteries, twists and turns and characters that made you want to have them as your best friend. This is very hard to achieve , balance in just the right proportion to the action, and all the other properties that come into the making of a really good book. Billy who felt that he had to leave to fight in the Civil War, met a Sheriff Brimstone and made a friend who would certainly save his life on his journey not only they the war but thru the rest of his life. The war just started the road he was to walk in his life and made him the man that he became, a man forged by fire. Great read and enjoyed every minute of it. 👏👏BRAVO 👏BRAVO 👏👏
Billy survives the Civil War and becomes a US Marshal along with his friend, Morris, who is a dwarf. Billy has been told his father hates him and his sweetheart has died. Billy and Morris successfully overcome his brother and bring an end to the violence and corruption. He is reunited with his father, mother of his child and little Tommy. Morris is last seen in the company of a very tall young woman.
What I enjoyed most about this book is that it was written as if a narrator was telling story. It made for a very interesting story filled with courage, humor, honor and presence. I would highly recommend this book.
JVJ. has penned a US Marshal western action adventure titled, "Fyre", which begins with a brother attempting to murder his brother, steal his future wife and cause the death of his own father. The brother killed is not, but assumes a new name, Frye, fights in the Civil War becomes a US Marshal. The future wife was already in a family way before the brother who wanted everything raped her and made her his wife. The Civil War ends and lives become renewed. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
A Must Not Miss! In the tradition of Larry McMurtry, R.V. James writes a awesome and uplifting tale of wickedly bad men and strong, uplifting good guys with a code of honour as powerful as their shooting skills and the women they love. If life is getting you down, escape to RV James country where the line between right and wrong is blazingly bright and impossible to miss. This story is a rollicking good ride, don’t miss out!
I read by J. V. James. I didn't like it at all at 1st. I think the characters needed some more work to help the story ome together. I almost quit reading this book because of all the bad things that kept happening into nearly half the book. Thankfully the good guys start having success. The ending was real good. But it makes me not want to read more of Mr. James' books not in the OLD series.
Billy Ray had a loving father, a beautiful girlfriend and a hateful sociopath for and older brother. Horace Ray was a conniving sort who lied to him to force him out of the family and hopefully get him killed during the Civil war. His evil plans work for 7 years and then Billy comes back. Good story with lots of action and people using their brains.
I had to stay up until 5:00 am just to see how dead Billy met up with dead John, his father, and dead Cassie, his girl friend, and meet his unknown son and they all found out that they each existed and were alive. Finally the people that really needed to be dead are dead. Confusing? Read this long book.
This story had more twists and turns than you could ever want. Lots of great characters and action. Very well written. Would highly recommend this book to anyone that enjoys a great story.
Fyre: A Western by J. V. James. Is a great book with plenty of drama. Gunfights bad guys and good guys. And a romance that has trauma. Has a happy ending. I enjoyed this book.
Very good story, characters were unusual and very interesting with honest and true values (the Good Guys I mean not the collection of Very Bad Guys)! Good use of humor every so often especially between new found Brothers.
I loved this book,,I was so into it that I felt a hatred for one of the characters.this will be an author that I will follow. I would recommend this book to every reader who truly loves a great read.
To put this one down because you won’t be able to. I appreciate the authentic details too. “Lorena” really was the most popular sentimental song of the Civil War era. Those battles really were fought. Cottonwood Falls and Emporia are real places. A great read.
Great story of how two brothers can be so opposite one is good and the one is evil. One has to grown up before he can stop the other. Good does triumph in the end.
This was absolutely amazing, could not put it down, so I didn't! Definitely a must read, for excitement and lots of drama throughout this book, so don't miss this one! 📚🤠🐝🎶
This was a good but twisted story. The author must have had a bad dream, then worked on the twists and turns to come up with such a good story. The story never got out of control but had some moments.
