Dark Kings #16.5

Dragon Lost

Rate this book
From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Donna Grant comes a new story in her Dark Kings series…

Destinies can’t be ignored. No one knows that better than Annita. For as long as she can remember, it's been foretold she would find a dragon. A real-life dragon. She’s beginning to think it was all some kind of mistake until she’s swimming in one of the many caves around the island and discovers none other than a dragon. There is no fear as she approaches, utterly transfixed at the sight of the creature. Then he shifts into the shape of a thoroughly gorgeous man who spears her with bright blue eyes. In that instant, she knows her destiny has arrived. And the dragon holds the key to everything.

All Royden wanted was to find an item his brother buried when they were children. It was supposed to be a quick and simple trip, but he should’ve known nothing would be easy with enemies like the Dragon Kings have. Royden has no choice but to trust the beguiling woman who tempts him like no other. And in doing so, they unleash a love so strong, so pure that nothing can hold it back.

**Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you'll enjoy each one as much as we do.**

Dragon Lost
A Dark Kings Novella
By:Donna Grant

*REVIEW* ☆☆☆☆
Dragon Lost is a 1001 Dark Nights Collection novella and part of the Dark Kings series by Donna Grant. The story is paranormal, but it also has elements of romance, drama and intrigue. This is the tale of Royden, a dragon king, and Annita, his mate. They meet when Royden returns to the place he was born. It's basically insta love, but in this story it seems more about fate than something silly, so it works. In this scenario, insta love is appropriate. They are mates, after all. Royden and Annita have a romantic engaging story that reads quickly. I enjoyed reading Dragon Lost, and I will read more of this series. A nice addition to the 1001 Dark Nights Collection!

I love the world of the Dragon Kings and wouldn't miss even a novella. The war and overall arc are not affected in any way. In Dragon Lost we focus on Annita and Royden with little contact from the other Dragon Kings with the exception of some check ins with Con. As is the case with novellas, the romance is short and the characters very quickly fall in love and acknowledge it.

Annita and Royden's story takes place in Crete, Greece and I found the area fascinating. This is Royden's old home and learning about what lay in the caverns and in the sea was exciting. In this whirlwind romance, Annita's great aunt's prophecy is coming true. The part of the prophecy that is unclear is which path Annita will take after she has found her dragon. Knowing how novellas usually have the romances go fairly smoothly, I was holding my breath when the time came for Annita to make her decision. I thought I knew what she was going to do, but the way the story progressed was not what I expected. I was especially attached to Royden so I was a bit picky about Annita's actions.

Dragon Lost was a novella I had to read straight through. I wanted to see Royden get his mate and get back to Draegan as quickly as possible. This was a fun, quick read and I'm so glad I didn't miss it!

This was a really cute story and a nice addition to this ongoing series .Royden and Annita were characters that were easy to love and their relationship and mating was a fast one but, it was a heartfelt one.Annita was a self reliant and independent women and one who paid attention to the visions and prophecies that her great Aunt predicted.

A one chance meeting and it was all it took for these two to fall in love. We loved Royden as he seemed somewhat lost and broken and a bit mysterious but, meeting Annita for the first time awakened something inside him that he thought long gone.

Royden and Annita were perfect for one another and the chemistry evident from their very first meeting but, we loved the fact that Annita wanted to know who his was completely both in human forum and as well as a Dragon.

This whole series is rather intriguing and we are loving its character's and we can't wait to see where destiny takes these two.

Overall this was a cute and enjoyable read for us and as characters go Annita and Royden were so easy to love.

Annita has always known that her destiny involves a dragon. Her aunt foretold that she would find a dragon, but as the years passed and no dragon appeared she thinks that it might be a mistake. While swimming in the caves near her home she stumbles upon a beige dragon, who quickly turns into a man. Royden just wants to find an item his brother hid from him and go back to Dreagan, but instead he finds a beautiful woman who says she was destined to find a dragon.

I enjoyed this quick Dragon King story. Annita and Royden had a sweet romance that I enjoyed and wanted more of. I do wish we had seen a little more action in this book. There were a couple times when I thought there was going to be some big thing happen, or some more information about the item Royden was searching for but it never happens.

Overall, this was a nice addition to the series. I do wish it had been a little longer though.

Annita and Royden’s relationship happened fast, but when you know you’ve met the one...well, you just know:) Annita was a strong and capable lead, and Royden a charming hero, with a few understandable reservations, and I enjoyed how Grant brought these two together. I found the story to be a romantically sweet tidbit in the Dragon King universe and can’t wait to see who’s up next!

I received an advance reader copy from the author and this is my honest review.

The newest installment of the Dragon Kings, Dragon Lost, is a well delivered, exciting read. This may be classed as a novella but be reassured Annita and Royden’s story is a must read. Fate, family and forever, extraordinary characters wrapped in the pages of this fabulous story.

This novella (short story) is #16.5 in the series, "Dark Kings" by author; Donna Grant. I loved this addition to the series. You definitely have to read the entire series to actually know what's going on with all the characters and the back story. I loved the characters in this novella (short story) especially the HOT Scottish alpha male that's able to shift into his natural form as a dragon. This was just a sweet romance with just a hint on what's to come when the series comes to an end. It's seriously going to be EPIC! If you are in a book rut then this series and author are definitely worth your time. You won't be disappointed! It's definitely a dragon ride!

Meh

It was OK. If the hero wouldn’t have been able to turn into a dragon it would have been a meh contemporary romance. I am not a fan of contemporary romances. Sorry to say this is not one of DG’s better ones.

I love these little novellas so much. Roydan and Annita have a great story and a great love. Roydan's history is so heartbreaking and you really get to see the heart of this Dragon King. When he takes Annita to his home, I almost died. Best part of the whole book!

I enjoyed reading about the developing romance between Annita and Roydon. But, other than that, there is no excitement in this novella. The blurb makes Dragon Lost sound more riveting than it is. It states that
All Royden wanted was to find an item his brother buried when they were children. It was supposed to be a quick and simple trip, but he should’ve known nothing would be easy with enemies like the Dragon Kings have.
Several times it seems as if something ominous is in the works, but then nothing further develops: no enemies, nothing out of the ordinary. I know that it's a standalone story, but Dragon Lost didn't seem to add anything to the growing conflict with the Others. Oh well. Next up in this series, a full length novel: Flame.

3.75 stas--DRAGON LOST is the 16.5 instalment and novella in Donna Grant’s contemporary, adult DARK KINGS paranormal, fantasy, romance series and the latest instalment in the multi-authored 1001 Dark Nights series. This is beige Dragon King Royden Dreagan, and Annita Dragoumis’ story line. DRAGON CLAIMED can be read as a stand alone but for back story and cohesion, I recommend reading the series in order.

SOME BACKGROUND: The DARK KINGS is a spinoff from Donna Grant’s DARK WARRIOR series which in turn is a spin off from Donna’s DARK SWORD series- all set in the Highlands of Scotland. The Dark Fae and their King Taraeth, along with the Silver Dragon Mikkel had declared war on the Dragon Kings by exposing the dragon’s existence to humankind. The last wars between man and the world of the paranormal saw a great loss of life on all sides but someone or something is determined to push the Dragons back into another war; Mikkel wanted to become King of the Silvers, Queen Usaeil of the Light Fae had set her sights on claiming King Constantine as her mate, and the Dark Fae want the Dragon’s hidden weapon in order to rule Scotland and the rest of the world. With the emergence of a group known as the Others, the Dark Kings are facing several supernatural enemies determined to destroy them all.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Royden and Annita) DRAGON LOST follows beige Dragon King shifter Royden as he searches his cave on the isle of Crete, for a family heirloom lost hundreds of years before but Royden is stunned when a Greek beauty witnesses his shifting, and accepts that there are dragons in the world. Annita Dragoumis has always known her destiny was to find a dragon but our heroine had no idea if the dragon was a fantasy, a reality or a small toy left behind by a heart broken child. Meeting Royden meant her destiny had been fulfilled but Royden struggles with the knowledge that Annita is aware of the dragons’ existence. What ensues is the quick building romance and relationship between Royden and Annita, and the potential fall-out as Annita must chose between her family back home, or starting over with Royden at Dreagan in Scotland.

The relationship between Royden and Annita begins cautiously but there are some details to Annita’s destiny that now even Annita has been apprised. Both her mother and father know some details of the ‘seer’s’ predictions but Annita was never to have known about her future destiny. Royden struggles with his attraction to Annita knowing that the war with the Others could destroy them all but the heart wants his happily ever after, and Royden offers up a lifetime to his future mate. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

We are introduced to Annita’s mother and father, and through memories of the past, Annita’s great aunt Chara, a seer who proclaimed Annita’s destiny to find her Dragon King.

DRAGON LOST is a fast paced story line of destiny and love. The premise is engaging; the romance is tender and captivating; the characters are colorful and dynamic but saying that I struggled to understand where Royden’s story line fits into the series other than to gift another Dark King with his fated mate.

This book was received as an ARC from Donna Grant’s ARC Angels, the following opinions and commentary are my own and no way reflect the greater DG Groupie Community. This book is a part of the Dragon King series and set in the greater Dark World and should be read as such, though it can be read out of sequence there are larger story arcs that lost on a new reader.

Royden, King of the Beiges, is looking for an item from his past and goes back to the lands which he once ruled. There in a cave were the item should be, contains something far more precious to him…Annita. For all her life it has been foretold that Annita would find a dragon, never in a million years would she believe that it would be a living breathing being.

This is a short but sweet love story, nothing really new is folded into the long running story arcs, nor are any long-standing questions answered. There is one glimpse of a day in the life of a King, pre-exodus. All in all a very good novelette.

I absolutely love this read. We get a chance to meet another Dragon and his Mate. Also this is another piece of the puzzle for the Kings and their war with the Others. Although Royden and Annita's story ended way to soon, it is definitely worth the purchase.

REVIEW
Royden had a need to visit his family home, he wanted to find something that he and his brother had buried.
Annita has lived on the land since birth, and she learned when she was young of a prophecy that was told to her parents about her.
A dragon she was going to find a dragon? Of all the funny things for her grandmother to tell her.
There is a pull and neither of them can ignore it. But will it be all that was foretold? Or a mistake?
I absolutely love this authors tales of dragons and their mates. I can't wait to read the next one.

A short story by Donna Grant telling the tale of Royden and Annita. The is a complete story that only makes a few references to Donna’s Dark World Series, involving the Dragon Kings. Royden is a Dragon King, who meets Annita when he returns to the place he was born. This is a quick, easy read, without much of the author’s usual detailed writing. It reads well as a stand alone story. I received this book from the author as an ARC, and this is my true and honest review.

I am a huge fan of the dragon Kings and I look forward to each new release of the easy reading fantasy books and dont even usually mind the repeat story (the catch up bits!!) However this (novella) was just terrible and actually feel cheated out of my hard earned cash... you wont miss a thing if you dont read this addition to the Kings.

The war is getting closer between the Others and the Dragon Kings. This was a short, cute story where another Dragon King met his match. Royden is back home looking for something is brother hid.something is brother hid. Annita has been told by the Seer in her family that she will find a dragon. Quick read that is a great addition not only to the Dark King series but the 1001 Dark Nights series as well.

I LOVED these characters so much. The only thing I can say negative is the fact it was a novella. :)
I loved Annita’s sassy spirit and straightforward personality and Royden was everything you’d expect out of a dragon king. Their story is sweet and I can’t wait to see them again in the upcoming books.

Sad about this book

I have purchased every single book in this series. This was such a disappointment. Throwing in some new information was appreciated but the story was abrupt and lacked any depth. There just was no engagement in it for me at all. This just seemed like a filler to make the next book appear closer.

The book followed Royden, aDragon King on a mission to retrieve a secret item on the island of Crete, and Annita, a mortal woman whose family prophecy foretold she would find a dragon. The romance was undeniably scorching hot, the fated mate bond is powerful, leading to a swift and emotionally honest connection.

The setting of Crete is a refreshing change, offering a deep dive into an ancient Dragon King location and its secrets. The book excelled at creating a sense of romantic destiny, Annita was not just a love interest, she was the mate foretold, which added a beautiful layer of inevitability and urgency to their relationship.

However, the overall war plot felt secondary to the couple's journey. While there are moments of action and external conflict related to Royden's mission, the book primarily serves to introduce and swiftly pair this couple, rather than making significant forward progress on the main war against The Others.

One of the shorter novellas from Donna Grant, but it delivers the same level of intensity as her longer books. Donna has a way of pulling the reader into a world of intrigue where you can't wait to turn the next page. Great couples in a fantasy world set right under our noses. Another great read that can easily be consumed in an afternoon.

Damn, that story was so not long enough. This series has gotten really intense as it moved on and it was nice to see a simple story where the focus was on the couple falling in love and the passion between them. Donna Grant’s magic with romance and skill with story-telling shines even in this simple story, but I really do wish it had been longer, because Royden and Annita were interesting characters I would have liked to see more of. Annita has known her whole life she was destined to meet a Dragon, though what that really means for her future and in the long run is a mystery to her. She has lived her entire life on her family’s estate in Crete, awaiting her destiny and wondering how her life would change, until one day it happens in the most surprising of places and ways. Annita’s always been pulled to the underwater caves below her family’s island estate, but one day the pull is truly undeniable and she walks into the dark only to come face to face—if only for a single second—with a huge dragon, until suddenly he’s replaced by the sexiest man she has ever met. Royden has returned to his old stomping grounds searching for a family heirloom lost for millennia hoping to reconnect with his dragons and family. When Annita stumbles across him in dragon form, resting in his family caves, he is totally surprised by her acceptance of him and her story of her destined fate to meet a dragon. I loved getting to meet these two and see them find love, the sweetness of their emotional connection not cluttered by the danger and drama of recent stories in the series and see the simplicity of their deep connection. Royden was a sexy beast with a lot of emotions to work through and internal turmoil that Annita was able to help him come to terms with as they fell in love deeply and quickly. Annita was a sweet and simple woman. She showed her courage and strength in many ways as well as in how she pushed and pushed to make Royden accept her presence and explain his truth to her, so they could have a chance to learn about one another and have a future together. The passion that flared as they accepted their fated love was hot enough to heat the ocean around them as they frolicked, while the depth of their connection shows that sometimes the length of time you know someone doesn’t mean anything to the strength of the love that develops. I am dying to know what comes next in this world and find out more about Rhi and her King in coming stories. I understand that this main arc is ending in two more stories (OMG I am DYING for Con’s story) but that the series will continue with more Kings finding their mates and possibly another new arc beginning. Donna Grant will always be one of the Queens of Paranormal Romance for me and will remain one of my favorite authors, earning herself a place on my shelves and in my heart. Another masterwork of love, despite my wish for it being longer for my personal enjoyment. ;)

I received Dragon Lost as an ARC from Donna Grant. My review is my honest opinion and no true spoilers will be given in my review.

That being said, there are few novellas that make me go "wow" and this was one of them! One question that I asked after I read this novella though was "how do you choose which couples get novellas as opposed to the full length novels?" Like any great author does, Donna deferred to the characters themselves and just said "they tell me." I was disappointed with only one thing, which was these two main characters were too shy for an entire book. Perhaps it was because the setting was so stunning, the secondary characters were so intriguing and that Annita and Royden, King of the Beige Dragons, were so instantly bonded that they weren't cut out to host an entire full length novel. There was no real problem to solve or enemy to defeat, but I was so totally in love with the two of them and their story.

Greece.... oh my gosh. With every word and description, Donna makes the reader feel the warmth of the sun and the air seemed like it was gently caressing my face as I nestled in to read their story. I opened a can of olives, and voila, there I was! I even wanted to explore the caves and I'm kinda petrified of caves!!! The gentle nature of Annita and Royden's relationship was a warmth that continued the pleasure that just wrapped me up in a warm hug and left me suddenly able to relax and simply enjoy this novella.

There is no real tension in this story. There is no deep bad guy waiting around the next page. The tension that is building in this series is held at bay in this island oasis of a novella, and though you think you might be bored and tempted to skip this little jewel, please don't!!! In every good movie, and that's what these novels are, a long drawn out movie (hey writers and producers, take this hint and check out Donna Grant's extended world!!!) there is a little quiet interlude usually right before the CLIMAX of the movie when everything comes crashing together in a whirlwind of action and chaos... Don't overlook this quiet interlude of a novella. We needed this moment to breathe, get to know two wonderful characters in Annita who is a wonderful mate who I feel has been set up to have a big role in the soon to arrive climax, and Royden, who is so romantic without being a lame duck...err... dragon.

Longtime readers, you will be able to relax into this pair with a sigh of warm fuzzies, and new readers, please enjoy what would be a gentle breeze before a coming storm of action and adventure that will knock your socks off!!!!

Wonderful book, Donna!!! Thank you!!!!

This is a book deep in a series of adult paranormal romances that all feature strong women falling for sexy Dragon King shifters.

Royden is a Dragon King looking for a talisman in Crete that was taken from him and hidden eons ago by his brother--before all the dragons were sent away from this realm. The talisman was a claw from his grandfather, who'd been dragon king before Royden. It had been buried in the crypt-like caves surrounding the isles around Crete, which had been Royden's ancestral domain before the war with humanity.

Annita Dragoumis is a homebody of a woman, living in her sister's estate in Crete, an historical home that has acres of private beaches. She swims the caves, looking for solitude, and never looking for a partner. Annita had been told by her great-aunt Chara, a famous seer, that she would be important one day--and would meet a dragon. It seemed silly, but Chara's prophesies came true on many occasions, and her Yaya also warned her to be vigilant to find the dragon--that this would surely come to pass. So, Annita is curious how Royden came to be inside the private caves on her family's estate. The connection is immediate, and Annita is sure this "man" is the dragon of Chara's prophesy.

Royden isn't so sure about Annita, but he's rattled that Annita knows about dragons--believes them to be real. He knows he should abandon his quest, but he's drawn to the beautiful human woman who seems to see through his ruses. He makes excuses to stay longer, and Annita's able to solve the mystery of the talisman--which is unsettling but resolved for Royden. And so his attraction for Annita. He doesn't want to take her from her family, which is so close knit, but his place is truly in Scotland with the other Dragon Kings, so he gives Annita the option to join him there--and he reveals his full dragonness to her. She's eager to join him, but she's conflicted. It's the counsel of her dear family that makes the decision for Annita--and it causes a small amount of pain for Royden, at first, but their fated mate bond is strong enough to weather a bit of conflict.

It's a novella, so things happen fast. It's also really centered on Annita and Royden, so we don't have a lot of other peripheral plot arcs impinging on this story. There's a little bit of sexytimes, but it's brief. I was mixed on the conflict/separation, not sure why it needed to be there. It seemed convenient and untenable, but it all got resolved really quick after that.

What I loved about this story that I felt was lacking and dismissive in other full novels in the series was the inclusion of family. While Lily's family was peripherally mentioned in Night's Blaze because Kyle played such a pivotal role, most everyone else's family was pretty much abandoned because there would be too many questions when aging became an issue. Heaven forbid they keep in touch before that happens, but the justification of the danger surrounding them was thin at best. In Dragon Lost integrated Annita's family really well giving them enough information to feel safe with their daughter following the prophecy while not overwhelming and endangering them.

Annita's family was fantastic on their own as they played an incredible role and were included, considered. They were supportive and open and as encouraging as they could be. Having something deep and abiding can only be a benefit not just to Annita, but to the Kings as a whole. Isolating themselves from potential allies in any form was an error that they are realizing far too late in the game.

The cavern scene where Royden shows Annita his past is something incredibly unique in the series. No king up to this point has had something so completely untouched, a place or thing that connected the past with the dragon, with the now, and with the mate. Passion did follow the reveal, but it was the wholly unique experience that was moving.

One bit of information on the Others made me think I missed something in the preceding stories, but it was insight only brought up as Royden was telling Annita their story up to that point. Having re-read every story from the entire Dark World series in order over the last few days up to posting this review I know I didn't miss anything. Anyway, it was a moment that took me out of the story until I realized it was something new.

For such a short story to feel so full and complete with a very different storyline as the series both ramps up and winds down this was so well done and incredibly memorable. Its simplicity and the way it feels out of place is actually its strength as it focuses on the romance and how mates strengthen their dragon kings rather than divides and distracts them from the threat of the Others. For the family aspect alone this has such a high rating for me and I'm ready again to jump into the next book of the series.

So I'm clearly the minority here, but I was kind of bored with this one. And I think it's the first novella that could actually be skipped in this series because it added zero to the actual story line. I've said this, repeatedly, but I'm also getting tired of getting the dragon's history in every single book. Here was even worse because it was already so short. I kept waiting for something to happen. For anything to happen. But nothing ever did.

Annita's family is super rich and owns a good chunk of some coast land. Because she apparently doesn't have a job, Annita goes for a swim everyday and explores all the caves there. It's during one of these trips that she finds Royden. In his dragon form. Even when she sees him shift into a human, she doesn't get scared.

Royden came back to the lands that he once ruled in order to search for something that his brother had taken and hidden from him. He figured he could sneak away from Scotland and be back before anyone realized he was gone. He was wrong. He doesn't know why he didn't shift and hide when he first heard a human approaching his cave, but now that he's seen the human he can't get enough of her.

I get that this is a novella and because of the length, things need to move more quickly. But how fast their relationship went was completely unbelievable. They haven't even known each other for two days and already they are in love and want to spend the rest of their lives together no matter what dangers they may face. It just really annoyed me and so many times I wanted to bang my head on something.

I really expected something to come of the item that Royden was searching for. It was obviously important, and they even quickly found out what happened to it. Sooooo why was nothing done to retrieve it in some way?

Like I said, nothing at all happens with the actual story line. But I'm guessing that Annita is going to be another important snowflake in the future based on what her Seer great aunt said of her future. Fan-fucking-tastic. Gawd, I hate snowflakes.
