Αγαπητέ Στέφανε,
Είναι τέσσερις το πρωί και δεν μπορώ να κοιμηθώ και όλες οι εικόνες από τα έργα σου στριφογυρίζουν στο μυαλό μου. Ήταν συναρπαστικό να στέκομαι στο εργαστήριό σου και να βλέπω μπροστά μου τα έργα σε όλο τους το μεγαλείο, με αυτό το πλήθος από συνωθούμενες λεπτομέρειες και τρομακτικούς κενούς χώρους. Νιώθω ότι συνδέομαι με την ουσία τους. Νιώθω ότι προσεγγίζουν πολύ τον τρόπο με τον οποίο γράφω στίχους - έντονα ξεσπάσματα της μνήμης, εκστατικές λεπτομέρειες, αιφνίδιος ερωτισμός, μυστικιστική εικονογραφία η σφυρηλάτηση παγωμένων αφηγημάτων που ίπτανται σαν όνειρα - στοιχειωμένα και παράξενα και αισιόδοξα. Και φαίνεται ότι η ιδιαίτερη δύναμη και λάμψη της ζωής μας είναι το μόνο που μπορούμε να διεκδικήσουμε και ότι είναι πνευματική μας αποστολή να εκφράσουμε αυτή τη δύναμη με όσο πιο αυθεντικό και μοναδικό τρόπο γίνεται. Είναι ένα εγχείρημα επιτακτικό, στο οποίο μοιάζεις ολοκληρωτικά βυθισμένος. Τα έργα σου φαίνονται απολύτως προσωπικά, δεν έχω δει ποτέ κάτι που να τους μοιάζει και αφού τα δεις, μένουν στο μυαλό σου για πολύ καιρό. Ήταν τιμή μου που τα είδα στο εργαστήριό σου και που αποτελώ μέρος του υπέροχου βιβλίου σου.
Ήταν επίσης θαυμάσιο που, για άλλη μια φορά, κάθισα μαζί σου και έφαγα χταπόδι και ήπια γλυκό καφέ και άκουσα το ατέρμονο ελληνικό έπος της βασανισμένης σου ερωτικής ζωής. Μακάρι να συνεχιστεί για πάντα!

“I am fascinated by prosaic diction that turns into poetry, by the frowning soberness that allows, ostensibly by accident, the infiltration of frivolity and humour, I am moved by harshness that gives way repentantly to the gentlest of emotions. I have admired Stefanos Rokos’ work for a long time, both in terms of his vision and execution. How intricate detail dissolves seamlessly into a complex whole, his use of colour and its deliberate absence; in his paintings the dreamlike and the real intertwine in ways that I find deeply affecting. At the same time, Nick Cave’s music has long had a profound hold on me. It often evokes a kind of melancholy, not a purely negative sadness, but something closer to recognition, a shared emotional undertow. So discovering this book (whose existence had previously escaped me) at a book fair in Athens last year was genuinely exciting.

This bilingual (English–Greek) book is a collection of Rokos’ paintings inspired by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds’ “No More Shall We Part” album. Rokos created one work for each of the album’s twelve tracks, plus two additional pieces based on b-sides.

I went through the book while listening to the corresponding songs of the album, one already-melancholic Sunday afternoon, and the experience sent a quiet chill and thrill through me. The way Rokos visualized Cave’s songs, in his own not-at-all-literal very personal way, intensified my listening experience in unexpected ways. Rokos is absolutely right to speak of a “dialectical relation between two art forms - painting and music”. And what a greatly executed publication: it includes each painting as a whole along with the lyrics of the corresponding songs, as well as zoomed-in photos allowing the reader to properly appreciate the amazing detail.

After visiting Rokos’ studio and seeing the paintings in person, Cave wrote to Rokos:

“It's four in the morning and I can't sleep and all the images in your paintings are churning around in my head. It was extraordinary to stand in the studio and see the paintings for real - the grandeur of them, with all their congested details and terrifying blank spaces. I feel connected to the essence of them. I feel they are very close to the way I write lyrics - intense bursts of memory, ecstatic detail, sudden erotics, esoteric imagery; the forging of frozen narratives that hover about like dreams, haunted and strange and life-affirming.”
