For more than a decade, while the First War of Scottish Independence rages, fierce warrior Conall MacGregor has dreamed of the revenge he will have against the man who robbed him of his family and home. To this end, he abducts the daughter of his enemy, hoping to force a marriage and reclaim what is rightfully his. He has no idea that the stubborn lass will turn his world upside-down, and that he will be the one held captive.
Half-English Tess Munro has no plans to shame her father and people by wedding MacGregor the Murderer. Despite her tremendous fear and a regrettable liking of his kisses, she staunchly refuses to wed him. She tries often to escape, both Conall and the hateful people of Inesfree, who leave no question about their absolute distrust and dislike of the Munro prisoner.
Soon, Conall’s reasons for stealing Tess grow more distant, and Tess’s desire to flee begins to fade, but a threat greater than their own pride will challenge the very fragile existence of their growing desire for each other.
Conall MacGregor has conquered many enemies, but can he win the heart of one stubborn lass?
As with all the Highlander Heroes Series, The Touch of Her Hand is a stand-alone novel. The characters from different books do sometimes interact, but these can be read in any order.
Had a few typos. I went in with no expectations. Things started out quickly but began to slow down after awhile. The heroine tried to escape three times. Twice, the hero waited by her side while she recovered from an injury or sickness. There was several time lapses that by the end of the book, half a year had passed since the heroine was kidnapped. The epilogue was told from a secondary character’s point of view which was unique and sweet because the secondary character is blind.
I believe this is free on Amazon Kindle if anyone is interested.
* How did the book make you feel?: It was a bit slow-going for me. I had a bit of trouble concentrating on the story. * How do you feel about how the story was told?: It took a long time for anything to happen in this book. It’s definitely a slow burn romance. Most of the action happened at the end. There were also some loose ends that were not tied up— did the H ever get his castle? What were Alain’s proclivities? Was there a resolution with any of the other characters that despised the h? * What did you think about the main characters?: I liked the H, but the h got on my nerves. She was a wide-eyed, naive, moral paragon that it was a bit annoying. I didn’t feel the chemistry between the MC’s. * Which parts of the book stood out to you?: I had a hard time with how naive and self-righteous the h was. * What themes/tropes did you detect in the story?: * What did you think about the ending?: captive bride, Highlander romance, slow burn * What is your impression of the author?: I enjoy this author.

I am partial towards Scottish stories as much as I am towards Irish ones. Particularly the ones that comply with the historical aspect in it. So this book was like a perfect one for me. i can't help it. Men in kilts are quite irresistible. Not that there were any mentions of such in this one. In spite of all this things that totally would take my interest and make the story one of my favorite, I had a hard time totally loving this one. yes I did like it for a certain extent and the fact that this was in the middle ages made it totally exciting for me to read, something in made me not give this a perfect 5. Well that is saying a lot considering my partiality towards Scottish historical books, normally makes me give them a 4.5 and higher.
But for those who by any chancing reading my review do not get disappointed. This book is actually very engaging and keps you on your toes till you read the end. Our h is quite the brave and stubborn soul who sticks to her decision till the end. Even at the face of death she is very brave and cares deeply for those who matter to her. She would even go as far as risking her life to save herself. So I was really heartbroken for her when the scene at the May Day happened. By any chance she did not deserve that at all. As a matter of fact, when she sobbed asking what she did to them for them to d such vile things to her, my heart literally broke. Tess really did not do anything bad towards them. I love how she chose the kind way in the end rather than hating them. With that she ended totally getting their respect. Our H was a typical alpha male who really did not know what befell him once he met Tess. Conall was truly at a loss at this half-English woman who totally set his life upside down. Life was never the same for him after her joining the castle. I loved watching the two fall in love. It was not instant love and the journey was beautiful to read.
One thing I am confused about is what actually happened to her former betrothed? Did he just go missing? Also there was the fact they never explained why Ezra did not like Tess and whether he in the end started respecting him too. Also there is fact of Fynn. Was he not supposed to come home every Tuesday?? Then why did he take so long to come and seek Angus? Is it because of the missive they sent??? There seem to be a lot left half unanswered, either that or I had not read as closely as I should have. Still I would really love the chance to read the rest of the series if I am given the chance to. Ms Rebecca Ruger, I shall keep an eye out for your books here after for sure.
Such a well written book I would give it more than 5 stars if that were possible. Everything in this book is what you want if you love Highlander romances. Beautiful love story, wonderful characters exciting moments. I will read all of this series and highly recommend it.
Considering the high ratings this book has, I was really expecting to enjoy it more than I did.
The writing style never clicked for me. There is a lot of telling and not showing in this story, and the two main characters often go on and on and on and on some more for pages at a time talking about their feelings. They don't talk to one another all that much, though, which led to a pretty boring book.
I understood Conall's anger towards Tess, because Tess's father really did a number on his family. Conall is one of the few survivors of an ambush that left most of Conall's clan, including his father, massacred in their own home (I don't consider this a spoiler, since it literally happens on the first page of the book). I guess I would consider this a bodice ripper, which isn't my favorite kind of romance.
Tess is an okay character, but she's too overly good for my tastes. She also has every color of hair imaginable lol. No one can define her hair color because it has all the colors. Does anyone ever REALLY have that kind of hair? I've not seen them if they exist. She can also sway anyone over with her non-failing sweetness, which just made her feel like a cardboard character to me. She was bland and didn't have much of a personality.
I also felt like there were some loose ends that were never wrapped up in the book.
This was an okay book to read if you don't mind the overly sweet heroine and all of the threatened rape and murder, but since none of those are my things, I can't say that this one will be memorable to me.
I cannot remember when I have actually enjoyed a book so much it made me cry sad tears, then joyful with a laugh out loud, as what I thought was going to happen didn’t. I can’t explain more as it would be a spoiler, just suffice to say this book was bloody well amazing. I would say the romance was a slow burn, but to me those are definitely the best.
I loved the time period and fell in love with Connell and Tess. I will definitely be going through the rest of this authors books, bonus she’s on KU too. Brilliantly and beautifully written. Highly recommended for historical romance readers.
I feel I can’t really say anything bad about this book. It was extremely well written. It was a well thought out story with all sorts of well fleshed out secondary characters as well as amazing scenery and I really enjoyed all of it.
It was good and I feel bad even thinking anything negative about it. I loved the length and how much story there was I just, well, for me, needed more romance and I do wish that there would have been more communication earlier on. I was bothered the most by that. I never understood why Tess never questioned anything. Why she didn’t even ask once why everyone hated her and I never understood why Conall just didn’t share.
Unfortunately, despite this man being physically violent towards her in the beginning, I wasn’t mad about it. I probably definitely should have been, but I guess it’s different when you’re in a bubble knowing there’s a HEA. All this to say content warning for physical abuse/domestic abuse. Also this book was slower paced than most of the ones I’ve read recently but I still really enjoyed it! Also really excited that Serena found her love!
Okay yes... I'm reading these books out of order—first book 4, then 5, and now book 1. But even if I had read the series from beginning to end I couldn't love it any more than I do. I'm so addicted to this author. She has a remarkably descriptive and absorbing writing style, giving us wonderful and complex characters, amazing world building, breathtaking scenes, and stunningly beautiful romance. These books can be read as standalones, but the truth is, once I read my first book in this series I couldn't stop.
This is an intricate tale adeptly woven together, and the perfect way to start a series. The evolution of these two characters is astounding. Set within the standards and mores of the brutal medieval era, each character has their own well explained backstory that impacts their personalities and helps us to understand their behaviors. Each character felt a responsibility to others. Thus Tess felt a duty to escape her captor and prevent the seizing of her clan's home and property (Marlefield). At the same time, Conall was chief of his own clan and a warrior for Scotland, but he was still driven to avenge the murder of his family and to reclaim his childhood home (also Marlefield). There were times I really hated Conall for his behavior, but whether I could forgive him or not, I always understood him.
There's a fateful, mystical quality to this story. Tess and Conall's betrothal seemed predestined but got interrupted by evil forces. But what is meant to be, will be, one way or another, so fate had to alter her plan. Also certain people seemed to know things about their futures that would seem unknowable. But most importantly, Conall had the uncanny ability to know when Tess needed him and where she was. Each time she tried to escape he was always able to home in on her. There was only one time when the commotion around them interfered with those vibes, and then things got really bad, really quick....
There were a couple tiny plot holes, but I don't care about details when I'm being swept away by the artistry of a story, and this one was near perfection in that regard IMO. Ms. Ruger is a truly gifted author, making you feel like you are in that place and feeling those emotions. So if right now you need a book or a series that you can get lost in, I highly recommend this one.
Connall MacGregor survived the massacre of his clan and hoped for the moment he might have his revenge on Arthur Monroe, the man who took his home and his family from him. Years later Connall kidnaps Tess Monroe, the daughter of his enemy, intending to force her into marriage and consequently regain his rightful home, Marlefield. Tess refuses to be used as a pawn and despite her fear of her captor, who has a bloodthirsty reputation, she adamantly refuses him. Every chance she gets she attempts her escape until captor and captive begin to grow closer and Connoll's desire for Tess to stay has less to do with his revenge and more to do with his realization that he doesn't want to live without her.
Connall was entirely cruel and violent toward Tess (after an initial kiss she thought she was having with her fiancé). He locked her away for days, withholding food and water and continuously threatened to kill her if she didn't cooperate. They had chemistry yet she was always trying to escape and he was always getting pissed at her. Connall was definitely intrigued by Tess from the start, with that first kiss is the forest, and then by her tenacity and strength but I'm both glad (because he was such a jerk) and frustrated (because come on!) that it took them so long to realize they had feelings for one another. This story had an old school bodice ripper feel at least halfway through. Yet despite what I thought would end up being a noncon/dubcon scene about 40% in there wasn't an actual love scene until 70% in and I was pretty disappointed with it considering how long it took for them to finally get together.
I was really torn with my rating for this one. There were parts I really enjoyed and it actually ended up being a sweet love story. But there were parts at the end that felt wrapped up too quickly and a character I feel like was forgotten and had a bit of a loose end. And lastly some brutal honesty- I love love scenes- and these (I think there ended up being 2) were just okay. Twice there were references to things "he'd taught her" that had never happened or even been suggested to have happened at any point.
I could not put this down. It had everything going for it: the alpha male (Conall), the stubborn lass (Tess) and a nice group of side characters. The long-simmering but just under the surface tension between Conall and Tess kept me turning the pages. But if I'm honest, I have a terrible crush on John Cardmore and hope that the writer gives him his own book. On top of all that, the writing is sublime. Can't wait to read the rest of the books in the series.
I liked the characters. But the story took forever...way to long and way to long for the steamy parts. It felt like she was at the keep for 5 years before anything happened. Two stars I'm afraid to read a my of the others..
In The Touch of Her Hand, we follow Conall and Tess' love story.
Tess, who had been living with her father's clan for the last year, is kidnapped by Conall, her father's enemy and laird of the MacDonnell and MacGregor, intending to marry her and thus regain Marefield castle and land. However, nothing goes as planned due to Tess being stubborn, defiant, and brave. So he has no option but to deal with an uncooperative Tess at every turn. As they face each other time and time again, they get to know each other and start to fall in love, despite the circumstances that bring them together.
Okay, I have to admit that, at the beginning of the book, I wasn't convinced it was for me. The way Conall treated Tess at the start of the book was hard to see, and I did wonder if I should put the book aside, but I'm glad that I didn't.
Conall and Tess' story was such a rollercoaster, with a surprising start and undesirable circumstances. I could understand in some way his initial treatment of her, as it was another age and he was set on vengeance, his harsh treatment really showed the enemy's part. On the other hand, the way she was so brave facing him made me smile despite their awful beginning. As the story progresses, we get to see other aspects of Conall that are beautiful, such as that scene on the hills when they are talking. The way Conall gets angry for the right reasons but deals with it awfully makes him in some way a relatable character and the emotional whiplash of the scenes makes me hurt for Tess especially when . I'm seriously convinced that the worst part of it wasn't what he did to her on the lake, as he just kept his pattern of threatening her but not hurting her, instead, it was the consequence of his omission. Then we have his input on what happened on May Day that almost make me cry, and let me tell you I don't cry easily reading books or watching movies.
Then we have Bethany, Angus, and Serena. Those three made the story sooooo much better, especially Beth and Angus. That old man was really wise and lovable!!!
I enjoyed a lot , as it raised the stakes beautifully and made their relationship progress and have its setbacks. Also, the time skips when were well written, even if it slowed the story, as it just made it more truthful to things that could be happening at that time and how it would affect people's lives.
Then the way Rebecca created the climax with so much action, made it awesome, even though this time she didn't get a scratch, something that I find hard to believe. Also, one of the reasons this part wasn't a 5-star was the lack of more description with the senses. I mean, if she had described the scent of blood and the clank of steel against steel, it would have given the scene more immersion.
This is an engaging story but slow-burning romance. I liked the way they met, in that he intercepted her first kiss. Both are stubborn, with good reason, but Conall is unnecessarily cruel in the early part of the story. There were a few unanswered questions: What happened to Alain? He was waiting around in the village but didn't take advantage of Conall's absence to confront or attack Tess. I expected him to be behind the attack on Tess and to be caught out and punished. Angus's situation is also not explained. He has no food, and cannot light a fire to heat his cabin, or cook for himself. He said that Fynn came every Tuesday, but when we met Fynn much later, he has been to Spain, a journey of some months. He appears to have the means to take care of his father, is a nice young man and well dressed, yet his father is skin and bone. After 20 years alone, I'm aghast that Angus is left so long, and amazed he is still alive. Do they have a clan? Did Conall take Marlefield back, or is he content with Inesfree? What about Bethany's story? Did they find out where she had come from and what happened to her mother? These unanswered questions made me drop my rating by 1 star, but I still gave this enchanting story 4 stars.
>Book Review – The Touch of her Hand >I am an independent reviewer. This book is the 1st in the Highlander Heroes series and ends in an HEA. This story has a lot of characters that the reader gets to know and love. Angus is a blind man, but plays a large part in both Conall’s and Tess’ lives. Conall was young when Tess’ father destroyed his family and clan, stealing his castle and killing his father. All Conall’s life he wanted revenge. He gets the opportunity and kidnaps the evil man’s daughter, Tess. Tess is such a fun character. She knows her job is to never give up, even though she dislikes her father also. She keeps trying to escape and irritates Conall at every turn. >Of course they fall for each other. The story breaks down a bit when Tess’ fiancé is shown to be behind her attack and no one ever finds out. The fiancé is never mentioned again. Serena and Bethany are secondary characters with parts almost as large as Conall’s. Conall is a great man, but needs to be a bit more alpha. > This book is appropriate for an adult audience. I am giving this story 4 stars. The story is fun, the characters are great, but Conall needs a bit more.
Conall and Tess. This is the first book I’ve read by this author. Conall is the MacGregor laird on a mission to avenge the death of his father and clan at the hands of the ruthless Laird Munro. He kidnaps the Munroe’s daughter Tess in an effort to wed her and take back the castle that was taken from him. The castle transfers to her husband when she weds so it is a good plan to get it back without bloodshed. However Tess refuses to wed him. This goes on for months. But during that time they grow closer, something neither of them planned for. Tess makes several escape attempts but Conall always finds her and brings her back. Their story is a good one and well worth reading. Off to the next one.
This review is based on listening to the audiobook.
This was really hard to go through. It started out really well and reminded me so much of Outlander tbh. I have to admit that I picked this series up because I'm a huge fan of the narrator. He did an incredible job but the book felt like a drag. I nearly gave up on it around chapter 20, but figured I'd try to power through. Glad that I did because around chapter 26 it finally became good!! End of the book was really nice but it ended way too early imo. The whole enemies to lover part dragged out for too long in my opinion and it felt like the whole book was about to convince that the stubborn escape loving Tess would finally see how much he liked her. I wished they wrote a bit more about how their life would be at the end, but oh well.
I enjoyed reading this book. It was beautiful and compelling. The writing flowed easily and effortless, keeping the reader engaged and involved throughout the book. The characters were well developed, strong, compassionate and likeable. The lovemaking was sweet ,all-consuming,and passionate. If you like reading about strong, feisty and compelling women who can bring even the most strong and powerful Highlander in Scotland to his knees, well select this book and you will not be disappointed.
It has been long since I read a story so full. The heroes are complete and the plot never seizes to amaze you. I used to love highland romantic novels but unfortunately the last year's U found then unimaginative and mostly flat! I am happy I found a writer who knows how to compose a story! I hope the following books will be made with such great standards. Cannot recommend it enough!
From the craggy moors and mists of Scotland, at a time when William Wallace rode the land, comes a story of a man betrayed and set on vengeance that he believes will only come through wedding his enemy’s daughter. But nothing is as it seems, and spiriting her away sets them both on a path where they learn their own true mettle and what more life can hold when they let love in...
I absolutely fell in love with the heroine and the hero in this story, from the first page and I was swept away with their trial and tribulations romance. The Touch of her Hand characters come off the pages and pull you into this wonderful story, with a villain you'll love to hate and a plot that leaves you wanting more. With setting descriptions and action sequences that are wonderfully vivid that brings the story to life and brings this read together perfectly!
I really really liked the beginning of the story. It was bursting with action and showed how angry the Hero was - I LOVED IT. He continued to treat the heroine abominably - WHICH, again, I LOVED! However, quite quickly, he grew besotted and turned to mush. Boring. Boring. Boring. Heroine was perfect, she was too nice since the beginning. It's just that, after the Hero fell for the heroine, he became too sweet, no challenge, no intrigues. Boring.
This was a great read, the characters were so likable, and well developed, the story wasn't the same old story that so many of the genre are, and I was sad to see the end. I look forward to reading more from Rebecca Ruger, this was my 1st of her books, and I was very happy with it.
The beginning of a timeless love affair to span the ages
What an incredible journey! The journey and growth of the two characters is enduring. Each displaying an inner strength that will amaze every reader. Obstacles abound at every turn. This is my first book from this author but definitely not my last.
This is the kind of medieval books I just love to read. All the necessary ingredients to make a great book, this has it in spades. Rich in history ( you even have William Wallace doing a cameo) and action packed plus of course a hot brooding alpha? Plus it doesn't hurt that the h isn't a pushover and can actually hold her own.. Simply loved it!
Wonderful story, exciting and enthralling!! Great strong characters making the book just a can’t put it down book!! This is the first book I’ve read from this author and I’m now a true fan of her wonderful writing! I love books about Scotland my family lives back there. Thank you so much for your books please keep writing.
Excellent Romance Not To Miss: Just plain wonderful story filled with a multitude of emotions. This had me laughing, my heart pounding, my temperature rising, some shocks and so much more. This author has me hooked on her writing style. This is fabulous story telling. Mature reader:✔ Intimacy before marriage: ✔ Heat level 2+ out of 5. ✔
Got this on my KU and how glad I was to have found this author! She writes, almost similar to my old time favourite author, Julie Garwood but different... First I cringe with the whole locking up the Heroine in the tower and left her to starve (oh...yes) but I kept reading and wasn't disappointed. I believe Rebecca R is a new author but definitely have potential!
