Darcy Burke is one of my go-to authors whenever I need a satisfying historical romance. This story takes place at about the same time as the first in the series, but it can still be enjoyed on its own in my opinion.

This one did leave me a bit disappointed, but I honestly couldn't say why. Because it has so many things going for it! The couple has already been married for a few years. and therefor have learned to solve their problems through actual communication! Yes, there was a tad of (understandable) brooding and sulking, but in the end, communication saved the day. There was not a lot of drama, which I loved, and both characters were really decent, good, and kind people.

I didn't enjoy t his as much as the first book in the series, mostly because the plot (Poppy's desperation for a child) is not really my cup of tea. But again, that's all me and not the book.

I can say that I am now looking forward to the next book even more! I really want to know why the last sibling is such a scrooge now!

Series: Love Is All Around #2
Publication Date: 10/15/19
Number of Pages: 134

It was truly a fortuitous day for us readers when this author realized her oeuvre didn’t contain any Christmas stories. She immediately set about remedying that with the Love Is All Around trilogy. The trilogy features the Stafford siblings and is set around the St. Stephens day festival and Hartwell House (a home for impoverished women). While the stories all occur at around the same time, none of them provide enough information on the other stories to provide any spoilers. The first book, The Red Hot Earl, featured the youngest sister, Bianca, but we were also introduced to the older brother, Calder (whom we’ve all loved to hate) and our heroine for this book, Poppy. The trilogy wrap-up will be Calder’s story in Joy to the Duke and I can hardly wait to see what turned him into such a sour curmudgeon!

We met Poppy in the last book and learned that something was wrong, but we never learned what it was. Now we know. Poppy and her husband, Gabriel, Marquess of Darlington, have been married for almost three years and Poppy has slowly come to the realization that there will be no children. It isn’t from lack of trying – she and Gabriel are a love match, but still, no children. She’s gotten more and more melancholy and she can’t bear to go to Hartwell House to see the children that are housed there. It just hurts too much. In her sadness, she’s even begun to withdraw from Gabriel.

Gabriel Kirkwood loves his wife to distraction and her current melancholy hurts him, especially since all he wants is her happiness. He doesn’t know how to help her, but he does know that he is happy that there have been no children. Not that he doesn’t want children – he does – he is just absolutely and totally terrified of losing Poppy and the child in childbirth. He lost his mother and his older sister to childbirth and Poppy lost her mother in childbirth. He cannot lose Poppy as well.

These two are so wonderfully and sweetly in love. It was a pure delight to see how they expressed their love and helped each other overcome their issues. The epilogue is wonderful and you’ll read the last word with a full heart and a warm-all-over feeling. If you want a truly uplifting and loving Christmas read, this one is for you.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Gabriel Kirkwood, Marquess of Darlington is working at Institution for Impoverished Women, aka Hartwell House when a very pregnant young woman arrives looking for a place to stay. Unfortunately there is no room at the house and she is going to be turned away, but when Gabriel overhears her saying she doesn’t want her child, he gets an idea and offers to let her stay in an empty cottage on his nearby estate.

Gabriel is married to the love of his life, Poppy is everything to him and he knows she wants a child, but after almost 3 years of marriage, it doesn’t seem like that is going to happen and if he is honest, Gabriel is fine with that, he lost his mother to child birth and Poppy’s mother and sister both died giving birth, so he is terrified of losing her. He sets Dinah up in the cottage and hopes to convince her to let them raise her child. But before he can talk to her about it, Poppy discovers her and thinks the worst.

Poppy is heartbroken that she can’t have a child and when she sees Gabriel entering the cottage, she thinks he is having an affair. Later when they talk, she learns that he is not as upset as she is about not having a child, she tells him she needs time to come to terms with her barren state and will be attending a house party with her sister. She avoids Gabriel, but does spend time with Dinah and tries to convince her to keep her baby, she tells her that they will help her figure it out. She goes the house party, but is not disappointed when her sister Bianca wants to leave early, she missed Gabriel and thinks she has come to terms with being childless.

When she returns, they reconcile and he tries to explain, they both agree to help more at Hartwell House, especially after learning her brother Calder, the Duke of Hartwell has withdrawn his support. They forge ahead and but Poppy doesn’t really begin to understand how deep Gabriel’s fear is until Dinah goes into labor. And when he confesses his memory of his mother’s death, he begins to shut her out and she tries to be understanding and supportive, but the gap between them continues to grow.

Later while visiting her brother, Poppy makes a discovery that will change everything between her and Gabriel, she is overjoyed, but worries that Gabriel will not share her feelings and while this could be the answer to her prayers, it may destroy her marriage.

This was a very emotional and surprisingly steamy novella, it is well written and flows nicely, with wonderful leads and great secondary characters. My heart just broke for Poppy and Gabriel, it was so obvious that they were in love but her infertility was becoming a major wedge between them. I loved watching them come to terms with it, both individually and as a couple, it was very touching and extremely well done. I was also sucked into the secondary storylines and cannot wait to find out what happens with her brother!

The Gift of the Marquess features a wonderful romance between a couple unsure how to fix the problems in their relationship despite their love for one another.

Poppy, The Marchioness of Darlington, wants nothing more than to be a mother, but after three years of trying it is unlikely her dream will happen. After discovering her husband, Gabriel, doesn’t share in her loss, the pair grow distant. And when an expectant mother arrives at the local institution for single women and mothers where Poppy volunteers, her longing for children only deepens driving her and Gabriel further apart. Gabriel has been relieved Poppy hasn’t been able to conceive as after losing his mother and sister in childbirth, Gabriel can’t bear losing Poppy as well. But with the divide between them deepening, Gabriel is desperate to repair their relationship and will do anything to get back the relationship they’ve lost.

I haven’t read many historical romances that follow an already married couple, but I have to say I really enjoyed it. Poppy and Gabriel’s relationship has mostly been a positive one and the pair obviously love each other a great deal. For the first three years of their marriage, Poppy was unaware of Gabriel’s hope they wouldn’t have children and it obviously crushes her when she finds out as being a mother has always been a dream of hers. Gabriel’s lack of communication on that front was a bit frustrating but I understood his unwillingness to talk about it. Ultimately I enjoyed watching the couple work through their issues and come out a stronger couple because of it.

This book takes place over the same time period as the first book in the series, The Red Hot Earl. We get to see several of the scenes from the first book in a new point of view as well as new scenes due to the focus on a different couple. I enjoyed seeing Ash and Bianca again as those two are simply perfect for each other. We learn a bit more about Calder and why he is the way he is in the series. I’m definitely looking forward to his story and the groveling he’ll have to do to make up for his bad behavior.

Overall The Gift of the Marquess was a great read and I’m looking forward to reading the third book in the series, Joy to the Duke, soon.

2.5/5 Stars.

So let's get one thing straight, I read Darcy Burke quite often. She's one of my go to authors when I want something quick, simple and un-complicated. The charactes, plots and the writing always make for an easy read - and you're never dealing with heavy emotional concepts.

However, in this book I think the content was such that it required a deeper emotional context, which is definitely missing in the book. The plot line of a married couple who love each other deeply, but have been barren for 3 years isn't one to be handled with kid gloves. Or at least, in my opinion such a topic isn't an easy-breezy romance trope that can be dealt with in a novella length book.

The romance while beautiful (the added benefit of a married couple meaning that there are more steamy scenes than usual) is good, but since the story is more about their inability to conceive; Poppy's agony at not being a mother, and Gabriel's fear of loosing his wife in childbirth - it's less of a solving of all these complicated emotions than a romance. Even those complicated emotions are often muted and rushed through, so you never really connect or feel for the protagonists.

The plot with Gabriel thinking of adopting the baby of a woman who'd come to the shelter his family ran seems far-fetched. A marquess adopting a son, that isn't even his and making him his heir is some fantasy level bullshit. Even if Gabriel - the sweet, loving and caring man that he's shown to be - would be okay with this, there would be someone amongst his peers who'd tell him what a monumental idiotic idea that was.

Anyhow, I will still read DB in the future, but I sincerely feel such hard-hitting emotional stories need more time, work and length to really have effect.

Bitter sweet and beautiful story, showing how this couple are so perfectly balanced, but fear and doubt are such strong emotions, that they threaten their perfect world.

Poppy more than anything, wants to be a mother , after 3 years of marriage there is no Sign of this happening , but her husband Gabriel is frightened, scratch that , he’s terrified, that he may loose her .
Both his mother and sister and her mother died in childbirth, he decides that maybe they can foster or adopt a child instead.
Now to find a solution, find a baby.

So much more as well is going on in this book , there’s Ash and Bianca. Calder , and a few new faces .

A really great second book in the series , yes they can be standalones but are much better as a set . So make sure you read them all .

Poppy Kirkwood, the Marchioness of Darlington, wants a child, but after nearly three years of happy marriage with no children she is convinced she's barren. Her grieving turns to anger when she learns that her husband Gabriel is actually rather relieved they haven't conceived. Poppy feels alone and turns her attention to the Institute for Impoverished Women her husband sponsors.

Gabriel Kirkwood, the Marquess of Darlington, lost both his mother and sister in childbirth and he's terrified to lost his beloved wife the same way. Still, he would love to be a father and Poppy's despair breaks his heart so when he meets a young pregnant woman who has no desire to raise a child, he wonders if this is his chance to give Poppy what she most wants. But as Poppy pulls away from him, he just hopes his efforts won't come too late.

As someone who's under pressure to have kids but is in no way ready to do so, I found Poppy very difficult to relate to and it seemed she was rather unfair to Gabriel. But he did the same thing to her in some instances, so he wasn't perfect either. Nonetheless, I loved having an already married couple in this one and the love between these two was clear and lovely and watching them work through their issues together was actually rather inspiring and I really enjoyed it.

Poppy always dreamed of someday being a mother but after her three years of marriage to Gabriel she still can't conceive and this makes her really sad and makes both of them hold back in their marriage because it also happens that Gabriel is afraid of something happening to her if she one day became pregnant, but the love they have for each other makes them work through their issues and start being honest with each other. You could see how much they loved each other and watching them realizing their dreams was joyful to watch!! Sweet story.

A pleasant continuation for the first book of the trilogy. Although I got to admit I felt more for this book than the previous. I felt sincerely sad for Poppy and Gabriel as their problems became evident. It was the first time I’ve read a regency novel where the MCs are already married and it was a good change too. It showed the married life of the couple clearly and problems rising from it. I am happy for the ending as it clearly gave both our MCs the happiness they deserved.

It’s a risk, but if he can overcome Poppy’s fears and hesitation, he can give her what she wants most for Christmas.

My review :

Will their love be enough to go past life’s deceptions ...

I confess it is not often I read a story about an already established couple with no doubt about their feelings.
But when circumstances wound them, will their love from one another suffice.
Life has its uncertainties but becoming a mother in past time was having a lot of faith and courage as a happy outcome was never assured.
And a woman’s worth was alas often measured on her womb’s production.

Mrs Darcy Burke is a painter of the soul, she gave such a range of colors to her characters, she put them in the middle of an artist’s canvas and life and love decide on the right shade at the right moment.
They are dark when mourning what will not come, then green of hope, red of passion , blue with acceptance ...
Poppy has everything life could grace her, a fulfilled existence, a successful marriage, a devoted and loving husband, except children. So when she cries her empty womb, secretly her husband breaths more easily, so scared to lose her in childbed.
So it is perfectly understandable she felt betrayed when the man she loves reveals he is relieved by her barrenness.
Poppy and Gabriel, each faces this issue a different way, and at first alone, until they both accept to bare their heart to the other and share their fears and scars.
It is no easy road, paved with dents and holes but it hold the promise of a harmonious avenir together.

I can only recommend everyone to read this amazing tale of love.

Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) provided by the Author and Publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an fair and honest review.

This is the second book of a Christmas trilogy featuring two sisters and a brother. They each have a lot to overcome before they earn their HEA. I just fell in love with these siblings and their other halves. The short novel made character development compacted but the issues explored in "The Gift of the Marquess" were very real in this historical time era. Childlessness was a sad thing, especially for the nobility. Also playing a part in the plot is how this community deals with single women and their young children. The generosity of the community means the difference between living a decent life and the workhouse.

Poppy, the Marchioness of Darlington, has been married for almost three years and has not conceived a child. She is melancholy and has withdrawn from activities she enjoys and from her husband. When they finally discuss the situation and Poppy finds out her husband is more than okay with not having children, she is sad and not a little angry.

Gabriel Kirkwood, the Marquess of Darlington, has some very valid reasons for being relieved that the wife he loves very much is barren. Having lost his mother, sister and Poppy's mother in childbirth, he is terrified that he would lose Poppy too. Knowing how desperately Poppy wants a child, he brings a young unwed woman into their home when the woman tells him she doesn't want to keep her child. Gabriel sees this as the perfect solution - He and Poppy will take the child and raise it. But the best laid plans and the perfect solutions don't always happen. Reminds me of the Thomas Ritt song "Life Changes." "You make your plans and can hear God laughing, life changes."

Anyone that has read any number of my reviews knows that I am NOT a fan of the second chance romance trope. I thought with the hero and heroine of this title having been married for years that I would be reading a second chance romance. I am so happy to say that’s not what happened at all, and I highly enjoyed this title!!

One of my main reasons for disliking the second chance romance trope is the fact that so many of them feature heavily repetitive thoughts from both the hero and heroine. Thankfully, Poppy and Gabe work through their problems by talking to each other and so their thoughts were not the same thing page after page. I loved watching them work through things and become closer as a couple.

Part of me wished this had been a little longer, because some things felt a little rushed. But at the same time, I think the shorter length is what helped keep this from becoming repetitive.

I am definitely looking forward to the next title in the series! Can’t wait to see Calder’s HEA!! Huge thank you to Darcy Burke for the eARC!!

The Gift of the Marquess (Love is All Around #2) by Darcy Burke

Love takes a bite out of your heart in The Gift of the Marquess. Heartache becomes a big deal for a couple yearning for different outcomes to the same problem. Poppy and Gabriel have to decide if love is worth facing down the scenarios neither can control. Burke tackles more than just a love story. Beyond the heartbreak and the disappointment lies an inspiring tale of hope. That's a subject every heart can relate to.

The Gift of the Marquess is the second book in the Love is All Around trilogy series by Darcy Burke. The book is a stand-alone, but if you have read book one you might notice that at least a part of their timelines is overlapping, so some events might seem familiar to you.

The blurb of the book reveals everything the reader has to know about the main characters and their back story, so you can see whether or not you will enjoy the book (theme, triggers etc.) just by reading the blurb. The rest of the book is about the way our characters express their feelings, their struggle of wanting, but not having a child and finally communicating as they should have done a long time ago. As a married couple, there is communication, but they don't deal with their want or lack of a child.

I liked how everything that had to do with pregnancies was handled. Poppy wants a child so much, but she hasn't had one so far, while there is another woman who is pregnant and doesn't want her child. If the characters lived in the 21rst century things would have been so much easier for them and that made me think a lot.

Overall, the book was good. There was some angst, but not much. My heart hurt for Poppy and Gabriel and I understood why Gabriel wouldn't want to risk the life of the woman he loved by getting her pregnant. The story was good and I also liked the glimpses we got of Calder and Felicity's story. I would recommend the book!

The Gift of the Marquess by Darcy Burke is book Two in the Love is All Around Series. This is the story of Gabriel Kirkwood, the Marquess of Darlington and Poppy, the Marchioness of Darlington. I have read the previous book which did allude to Poppy having a problem but I do think you could make this a standalone if you wish to do so. Poppy wants a baby but has been married to Gabriel for a few years with no child. We learn that Gabriel is afraid that Poppy will die in childbirth. I enjoyed seeing these two work through their issues to have their Christmas Gift.

I liked this book, but I expected there to be more interactions with side characters.

I liked Gabriel and Poppy, but I wanted to see more scenes where they do something other than talk about Gabriel’s fears and Poppy’s disappointment. I wanted to see them going to balls or Hartwell House and interacting with others.

I thought that there would have been more scenes with Gabriel and Poppy at Hartwell House where they are helping and interacting with the mothers and children, but there might have only been one scene at the beginning and after that the people living at Hartwell House cease to exist. Since Dinah goes to live in Gabriel and Poppy’s cottage, I thought that at least she would be shown more, but she still wasn’t a fully developed character.

The description is not completely true. Yes, Poppy distances herself from Gabriel, but she also stops going to Hartwell House because she can’t bear looking at all the women with children. When Gabriel and Poppy talk more, they both decide to be more dedicated when it comes to helping Hartwell House.

I didn’t like Calder at all, Felicity seemed like an annoying character, and I’m not interested in seeing Calder change or seeing how their relationship will develop so I’m not going to continue with this series.

Married for three years, Poppy and Gabriel have not been able to conceive. Whereas Poopy wants nothing more than to be a mother and is heartbroken over her childless state, Gabriel is terrified of losing her in childbirth and is relieved that they have not conceived. Their mixed feelings regarding childbearing have driven a wedge between them and when an expectant mother arrives needing their help things will only become more complicated for them.

The Gift of the Marquess is the second book in Darcy Burke's Love is All Around trilogy. This book focuses on the middle child of the Stafford siblings and the oldest sister, Poppy.

Having read both the first and last book in the series before reading this one, I found that this one is very different in comparison to the other two. Firstly in that it focuses on a couple that is already established and their deep feelings for one another are already known. This is not something that one comes across often in a historical romance and which I was very happy to read about. The second difference I noted is that this book is a lot steamier than the others in the series.

My heart really went out to both Poppy and Gabriel, I thought both their fears and feelings of despair were justified and I was hoping for a resolution that would avoid as much heartache as possible. It was an incredibly sweet story and the book in the series least prone to drama. I wasn't terribly invested in the characters, but I still enjoyed the story and it is a perfect story for the holidays.

I recommend this series if you're looking for sweet historical romances to enjoy this holiday season. They're all quick reads at about 150 pages.

Although each book can be read as a stand alone, it would be better if you knew the story of Poppy's sister, Bianca, because the stories happen at same time.

Review Book #1 >> https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

While Poppy Kirkwood, Marchioness of Darlington, helped her sister deal with their obscure brother (after he inherited her father's duchy and became a scrooge), she also faced a problem that made her sadder every day.
After three years of marrying Gabriel, they could not have children.
For Poppy this was a real martyrdom.
The couple used to help Mrs Armstrong at Hartwell House, a house that helped impoverished women to live and work in, keeping their children close.
Poppy loved being around the kids, reading to them, but for the past fortnight she couldn't go there anymore.

On the other hand, Gabriel, despite loving his wife very much and knowing her desire to be a mother, did not feel the same desire as her.
Gabriel had lost his mother at the time of his younger brother's birth. And years later, his older sister also had the same end. For him, childbirth was synonymous of death. How could he want something that would make him lose the woman he loved?

Because of this, the couple goes through a turbulent period.
Until at Hartwell House comes a girl, a single mother, about to give birth, who said she didn't want her son.
Was this the chance Gabriel and Poppy had for their much-desired son?

Among disagreements with her husband, her older brother, fire, and the arrival of St Stephen's Day, Poppy would have a lot to deal with, plus the news that could completely change her life.

The Marchioness of Darlington wants nothing more than to be a mother, but after nearly three childless years of marriage, Poppy believes she is barren. Gabriel Kirkwood, the Marquis of Darlington, is certain his wife will die in childbirth just like her mother, his mother, and his sister, so he is relieved when they are unable to conceive. When a young pregnant woman who doesn’t want her baby arrives at Hartwell House, he glimpses a possibility to give his beloved a happy ever after.
This is the second book in the trilogy about the Stafford siblings, we met Poppy in the first book & it was obvious that something was wrong but didn’t find out what it was. The three books happen in the same timeframe & events overlap but there are teasers but no spoilers. This book was so different as Gabriel & Poppy were happily married & deeply in love but whilst Poppy was desperate to be a mother Gabriel was terrified that he would lose her if she gave birth, this led to conflict & soul searching which made for one of the best Christmas stories I’ve read, once again I read it in a sitting & the epilogue left me with a warm glow & eager for Chill’s story

Oh what a lovely and heartwarming story this is! Darcy Burke has done a wonderful job of writing Poppy and Gabriel's story and I like the fact that they've already been married almost 3 years when the story starts.

All Poppy wants is to start a family and have a baby to love but after almost 3 years of marriage, she hasn't gotten pregnant yet and is feeling very down about it. Gabriel, on the other hand, is happy that she hasn't conceived because having lost his mother and sister during childbirth, he's terrified that he'll lose her the same way. Once they open up about their feelings, a lot of heartache ensues until they each realize they need to face their fears.

I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

The Gift of the Marquess
by Darcy Burke

What an amazing story! I could feel Poppy’s sadness and heartache, trying to achieve the most precious gift and not getting anywhere near, puts a strain on a marriage, even though it’s a love match.
Although Gabriel would move heaven and earth for his wife, secretly he’s ok with his life as is, he definitely doesn’t want to lose another person he loves, no matter the cost!

A truly heartwarming and emotional read, every single page was fraught with emotion, well written loveable characters and in my opinion the best story this AMAZING author has written to date!

I received a complimentary copy from the author this is my honest unbiased opinion.

This was such a good read! This is the story of Bianca’s (from Book 1) older sister, Poppy and her husband, Gabriel, Marquess of Darlington. The way the story was written showed such empathy and understanding of the situation that Poppy and Gabriel were in. I loved the way they worked through their doubts and insecurities. They were such a kind and giving couple. I’m very interested to find out what his happening with their brother, Calder, in the next book. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

3.5 Stars. Light read that got me out of my fifth book slump of the month.

Some spoilers ahead:

Plot:

I was actually surprised Burke managed to cram so many plot threads and characters into 150 ish pages without the whole thing feeling overly bloated, but somehow she made it work.
This one was fairly emotional without being too angsty, definitely character and not plot driven.
The topic of infertility and how it can affect someone both individually and within a relationship was well handled and fairly realistic for a somewhat fluffy HR. Plot wise, there isn’t anything here you haven’t seen a million times before, but the execution worked for me.

Characters:

Both protagonists were likable and decently rounded for a novella. They didn’t have too much going on in terms of personalities, as there aren’t enough pages for that, therefore the story focused more on their current issues and how each dealt with it in different ways before learning to cope together.
A small detail that bothered me (and I’m sorry if I sound too political) was Poppy’s behavior towards Dinah. Even after learning the girl was raped, she kept insisting she should keep the baby and be a mother, as in her eyes that was the right thing to do, and how can you not love your baby no matter what? I assume I don’t have to explain how toxic and misogynistic this rhetoric is. Dinah had every right to not want a child that (through no fault of its own) would be a constant reminder of her assault. Yes, maybe a regency era woman wouldn’t think like that, but they also wouldn’t act like Poppy, or share any of her other, decidedly modern views, so screw historical accuracy, as it has no real place within this genre.
As for Gabriel, he was pretty much Kit’s clone (from Burke’s Duke of Lies) so I don’t have much to say about him. (Gary Stu alert).

Romance:

Not much going on here, as our couple was already married and in love. I actually prefer stuff like that in novellas, as it eliminates the possibility of instalove and super rushed courtships.
Poppy and Gabriel were really cute together.

Random thoughts:

- I wish a few lines were thrown as to whether or not they planned to foster or adopt after their own child arrived. As happy as I was to see Poppy’s dream realized, it seemed a bit callous that she would instantly forget about those other kids in need she talked about before getting pregnant herself. I would also have liked Burke to do some research as to whether or not some members of the nobility actually adopted children back then and what would happen to them, as they obviously couldn’t inherit any lands or titles from their adoptive fathers.

- I didn’t like Dinah very much. She was a bit rude to all the kind people around her that were trying to help her. Either Gabriel or Poppy could have easily tossed out her after being spoken to like that, especially after they went to so much trouble for her. I guess it’s better Burke characterized her as such, instead of “victim” being her entire personality. (Never mind that her level of education was a bit too advanced for a young maid).

Anyway, if you’re looking for a short, light read, I would recommend this one. This is my third book by this author, and she’s becoming a favorite of mine for stuff like that.

This is a lovely novella set during the holiday season. It's the second of three in this series. Each one seems to focus on one of the siblings and their love match.

The Gift of the Marquess deals with the heartbreak of infertility struggles. Poppy and her husband, Gabriel have been unable to conceive during their three years of marriage. The sense of loss and melancholy has caught up to Poppy. Meanwhile, Gabriel is also sad at their inability to have children. However, he also feels a sense of relief since he is terrified of losing Poppy and a baby in childbirth.

The story revolves around this couple finding their way through heartbreak to common ground. It also sets up the next book about Poppy's brother. I look forward to seeing what his story is.

Thank you to NetGalley for this reader's copy.

I enjoyed the first book in the Love is All Around trilogy better than the Gift. I thought that this tale was a little unrealistic for the era with the young Marquess and her family devoting so much time and money to the poor. I also did not like the you woman they gave a lot of help too. I thought she was very demanding and out of character for penniless and pregnant woman. It was nice seeing the events of the first story from the perspective of the heroine's sister and their Scrooge of a brother continues to be a good grumpy character. I can't wait to see how he is transformed in the third book.

The Gift of the Marquess is the second book in the Love is All Around series by Darcy Burke. It can be read as a standalone story but as this book involves members and events that happened in the first book, it would be a good idea to read this series in order. Otherwise, you will be giving yourself spoilers by reading this first.

Poppy and Gabriel the Marchioness and Marquess of Darlington are deeply in love. The only fly in the ointment is that in the 3 years that they have been married Poppy hasn't become pregnant. Poppy is devastated and although Gabriel is upset too, deep down he is relieved. He has lost too many important women in his life to childbirth and is convinced if Poppy were to get pregnant she too would die. When it comes to light that he doesn't grieve the lack of a child as much as Poppy does it starts to cause problems between them.

A young woman comes into their lives, alone, terribly unwell and not far from giving birth. She doesn't want the baby which starts Gabriel thinking that perhaps he and Poppy could offer to bring the baby up instead. Poppy, on the other hand, knows that the woman would regret giving up her child and works on letting her know that she shouldn't give up her baby. Whatever the decision Poppy will help her in any way she can.

With or without the baby can Poppy and Gabriel move past the sadness that the truth of their difference of feelings about her not being able to get pregnant brings?

I enjoyed this story and it was quite novel to read one where the main couple was already married. There might not have been any wooing, or will they won't they get together suspense. There was plenty of passionate love making though, and plenty of opportunity for us to see just how in love the couple are. The suspense was actually more dramatic because now it was a case of will they won't they be able to stay together despite their obvious love for each other.

Another thing that I liked about this story is that there are references to things that happened in the first book in the series. That book focused on Poppy's sister Bianca. This one is Poppy's story and in the next book, we will have Calder's story (their brother). I have loved the sisters' stories and am very much looking forward to Calder's.

Poppy and Gabriel were such kind and selfless people and so deserving of realizing their dreams. Both, at one time or another, found themselves consumed by sadness and fear. Those emotions can take a toll on a marriage. Their fears were valid but they never wavered in their love for one another. I commiserated with them on their journey to finding wholeness and happiness. They were determined not to let their fears of things beyond their control keep them from embracing what they had. Like The Gift of the Magi, this is a story of love, sacrifice, and hope.
Not many romances deal honestly with infertility and how it affects those experiencing it. Many touch on the subject but it’s usually not a major plot point. Kudos to Darcy Burke for tackling such a topic with candor and tenderness. It’s consoling to know that even women in the past struggled with the same issues women do today. At least in present day, women are more knowledgeable about infertility issues. In Poppy’s time, women had no idea how to deal with the issue. While many women will be able to identify with Poppy and the emotions and frustrations of having trouble conceiving, I think they’ll be surprised by Gabriel’s story. I knew childbirth was a leading cause of death for women in the 19th century, but I hadn’t thought much about the paralyzing fear men might have of the possibility of losing a wife and child.
I loved that this story ran concurrently with Bianca’s story. Now I know why Bianca was so concerned for her sister. I look forward to reading Calder’s story. He’s such a hardened man and I can’t wait for him to have his “Scrooge” moment and discover what matters most in life.
I’m thoroughly enjoying this series. Each book has been a fabulous love story with all the passion I’ve come to expect from Darcy Burke, but each of these books has had such a beautiful underlying message as well. Like Red Hot Earl, this story is the perfect combination of heart and heat. Fans of Darcy Burke will fall in love with this holiday series.

Loved this story of hope!

The series continues with Bianca’s sister Poppy and her husband
Gabriel. They have been together almost 3 years and more than anything Poppy wants a child. Gabriel's terrified that Poppy will die if she has a child since his mother, sister, and mother-in-law all died while giving birth. So he determines that he must find a baby in need of a family, since that would be the safest way.

This is a great story about the ups and downs of marriage, infertility, love, and life in general. My husband and I, as many women and men do, suffered from issues with conceiving. You’re filled with month after month to year after year of hope and then disappointment each time you become aware that you are not pregnant. The counting, planning, and questions....the anger, fear, and jealousy....the anxiety which actually thwarts the entire process. These days we have so much more “help” than Poppy did. It was good to see things work out for them but also that they were okay with their relationship if it didn’t.

I like they way this series has incorporated life issues that affect so many people and of course the Christmas season as well! Can’t wait to find out why the Duke is so nasty and what Felicity has to do with it!! I received an ARC of this book and chose to post a review.
