Kpo, la panthère était toute petite quand elle dut quitter précipitamment la forêt de Baou. Seule, abandonnée, elle est recueillie par Siho, une maman guépard qui l’élève comme sa propre fille. Mais un jour, les hommes bleus, les Touaregs, la capturent. Blessée, elle est soignée par le prince Amastane qui devient alors son ami. Kpo est une fille de la nuit, une chasseresse. Résistera-t-elle longtemps à l’appel de la forêt ? Son désir de chasser sera-t-il plus fort que l’amitié qui la lie au prince ? Retrouvera-t-elle un jour le pays de son enfance ?

About the author

René Paul Guillot (1900-1969) was an author who lived, worked and traveled in French Africa and wrote primarily for children. His works have been translated to many languages and have been included in school required reading in many countries.

After studying science, René Guillot moved to Senegal to work as a teacher, spending over 20 years in Africa. Most of the material for his many books comes from this time.

In 1964, he received the "Hans Christian Andersen Award" for the novel, Fodai and the Leopard-Men. Three of his books have been adapted to film, while a live-action version of Little Dog Lost featuring a Welsh Corgi, was made for the "Disneyland" show and was broadcast in 1963.

I adored this book as a child, a tale of a leopard from her point of view. I wasn’t sure what to expect rereading it decades later.

The descriptions of the African bush and the animals are still incredibly evocative and lovely. I can see how it caught my imagination and love of nature when I was young and had never travelled to wild places like this.

However other aspects have not aged so well - parts are outdated and sexist and unpleasant to read (females all thinking the males are their masters, ugh!). The third section, where Kpo is captured by a tribal boy, reads like a leopard with Stockholm Syndrome, and just wasn’t enjoyable at all for me!! The ending at least redeemed that somewhat. So overall, I have mixed feelings about this nostalgia trip.

Read this as a kid and again this year... our cat is named KPO (kah-po). Bought a copy in French and one in English for my daughter last year.. Silly money... So to all the people who thought JK invented kids story telling... try reading this wonderful book!

A wonderful, warm story which could have been written yesterday. Highly recommend it.

This was one of the first books I remember reading on my own. I remember it was recommended by Stephen Fowler, a classmate who read a lot, I would have been nine or ten at the time. I remember the leopard cub being thirsty and drinking water for the first time.

কেপু নামের এক নিশাচর চিতাবাঘের কাহিনী । মা বাবা হারিয়ে যে বড় হয় অন্য পশু পাখিদের কাছে, ধরা পড়ে মানুষের হাতে, প্রেমে পড়ে এক বেদুইনের। চিতা আর চিতাবাঘ যে আলাদা প্রানী তা আগে জানতাম না।
