The Haunted is the story of a boy called Johann.Johann is going through a rough point in his life as he's strolling on the edge of the town near the woodlands. It was there where he discovered a mansion. Maybe it's not the best idea to enter a large mansion built in the mountains.
Books are a lot like movies. I have friends that told me don't waste your time watching The Notebook. But then, I watched it and loved it! I also told my friends they should embrace their softer side :)
So if I'm curious, I'll just read it myself. Now this book is nothing like The Notebook subject wise, but I could see how some people wouldn't like both of these stories. But for me, I really enjoyed this book. Well worth the read and the few bucks spent!
I hate when people add spoilers in reviews so, I always try not to do that myself...but Man! I want to talk about this book with someone else that has read it. (about to push it off on my wife lol)
I thought it was headed in one direction, then I thought another way, but then down another path.
I wanted to like this book. I really did. However, it never really worked. At least, not for me. It was - I assume - going for a clever symbolism or metaphor for life, memory, and forgiveness. Perhaps some will find it profound. Sadly, for me, it just came off as trite and highly predictable.
Perhaps the fault lies with me. Maybe I was demanding more from it than it was able to give. It wouldn’t be the first time I caught myself being a bit unfair to a book because I was too demanding. But, I’m this case, I don’t think that’s what’s happening. I think it just wasn’t able to find more depth in the metaphor it was putting forward, depth many others have in fact been able to find.
I listened to the audiobook version of this book on audible. I found The Haunted to be very immersive and suspenseful: once I got past the first few minutes, I felt compelled to keep listening - I ended up listening to the whole thing in a few days. The author is really careful about what is revealed at any given point, which keeps the audience guessing to what is really going on. This book had a lot of different moods in it: from eerie, to comforting, to rich, to barren, to surrounded, to alone. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a suspenseful book about a house that is not quite what it seems.
I found the name deceiving, I was expecting a ghost story but that’s not what this is. It was more a metaphor I guess for depression, the toll of life on the main character and it left me feel melancholy.
Lots of description in this story, a lot of it repetitive to the point it’s rambling, unfortunately it didn’t hold my interest.
The narration was ok but there were times when you could tell there had been a break in recording as the sound and tone of voice altered.
