Murder In Style #1

Secrets and Stilettos

Rate this book
For fans of Sophie Kinsella and Janet Evanovich... Fashion can be deadly… Jenna McGovern’s strappy shoes and sundresses are not going to cut it when she makes the move from Hollywood Hills to Blueberry Lake, Minnesota in the stone-cold dead of winter. A former stylist to the stars, Jenna’s determined to bring the latest red-carpet fashions back to the Midwest in an effort to revive her mother’s floundering thrift shop. When Jenna finds out her first client is Grant Mark, the best man in a high-profile winter wedding, she’s thrilled. However, when Grant gets a little too handsy in the dressing room, Jenna is forced to fend him off with her stiletto and send him packing. While she’s glad to be rid of the difficult groomsman, it’s pure bad luck that Grant is found dead later that afternoon from a high heel to the throat. What’s worse is that the attractive chief of police is convinced Jenna’s the one who put it there. If Jenna doesn’t clear her name quickly, she’ll not only lose the chance to style the biggest winter wedding Blueberry Lake has ever seen, but her mother’s thrift store will go under for good—and Jenna will be stuck flaunting the worst fashion of all a neon orange jumpsuit.

What a fun read. The mystery, the clothes, the romance! I read a lot of cozies, so when I find the first in a new series and one that takes place in the Midwest, I get super excited. And Gina LaManna’s, Secrets and Stilettos did not disappoint.

Although Jenna makes a lot of fashion faux pas when it comes to dressing properly for a Midwest winter; stilettos, fluffy boots, and mittens not tightly woven, I found it amusing and could totally see someone coming from a warmer climate doing the same thing. I did worry that she was going to freeze to death before the murderer had a chance to try to kill her. Hopefully Jenna gets a little smarter in future books…. but if she doesn’t I’ll probably keep reading the series.

I’m a bit sad in the direction Jenna decided to go in the love triangle. Personally I would have gone in the other direction, but I do enjoy a man who can cook. And if she’s not friendly with the police, where is she going to get some of the intel that she’ll need. I did enjoy that the sheriff realized early on that Jenna was going to investigate so he may as well help her instead of continually telling her not to try to figure out the killer. I also really enjoyed the pool that the whole town had going in regards to Jenna’s love life, it added a great touch of humor.

I didn’t see the killer coming and I do love when the killer is just crazy and it comes out of nowhere, it’s one of my favorite tropes. I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of mess Jenna gets into in book two, Lipstick and Lies, of the Murder in Style Mysteries. I also want to return to Blueberry Lake to get to know the characters more since I can relate to a lot of them or see traits of theirs in various people I know.

Another great cozy series that I recommend. And if you like suspense, you may want to check out her novel, Pretty Guilty Women, which I really enjoyed.

Fun, quick-listen mystery! I listened to most of it in one sitting. The main characters are not the best but likable. Hopefully the books get better as they go on!

Doing Audio.
Usually this author is hit or miss for me.
She does have a decent amount of romance and audios so I keep coming back.

This one was just ok so far. Her characters are WAY TO OLD to be acting and living like they are.

This one she is a wardrobe stylist from LA and moving back home after a bad break up.
She has zero money
She has zero personality
She is so superficial
She is conceited
She is a complete LOSER at 29!
She is shallow and has nothing to offer the world except her fashion sense.
She is judgmental internally to everyone whose fashion sense isn’t on par w her.
She is extremely vain
She has not one good quality
She is a bitch to people. she wants to be independent when she is in Danger and starts stupid fights when she literally doesn’t make her own coffee.

Also I work in entertainment and know MANY wardrobe stylists and have yet to meet one who doesn’t have a car or money. ESP if she was in LA! Impossible for her job.

I’m to believe she is super successful yet she has $300 to her name and nothing else. She had a public breakup w an actor BF who she got his first gig and she is now booted out of LA? If she was that successful she would still be working and she would t be this broke ass loser. Who can’t grocery shop or make coffee.

The fact that 2 hot men want her so bad right now I don’t believe. Why? She isn’t a great prize. Plus she is not even nice!

Anyways I liked enough to move to the next one. But I’m hoping this gets better.

Not big on love triangles

Oh and SHE ISNT DATING!!! We get it. You’re so special. 🙄 she isn’t dating she isn’t dating blah blah blah

This was such a fun listen. Small town, cozy mystery, spunky heroine, great humor, and an absolutely delightful cast. City mouse returning to her roots in Blueberry Lake full of well meaning but nosy & meddling townsfolk. After an altercation, Jenna becomes the prime suspect in a murder mystery. I enjoyed all her adventures trying uncover whodunnit. A few perilous points as well as the real murderer decides she’s in the way.

There’s a little bit of a love triangle between next door neighbor/firefighter Matt and the Chief of Police Cooper. Though, Jenna is recovering from a breakup and does a good job keeping them both in the friend zone. It’s a cute twist and makes the mystery more of a focus than the romance.

I’d definitely recommend listening to this one because…

Narration:
Kelsey Navarro was perfect. This was a huge cast of characters and personalities, including many Midwest accents. She did a great job of giving them unique voices and bringing the humor through as well. Absolutely loved her performance and am ready to listen to book 2, Lipstick & Lies.

Again Gina LaManna surprises with a delightful new series.

Jenna was a stylist in Los Angeles but after being dumped she decides to go help her mother with her thrift shop in Blueberry Lake, Minnesota. Losing her luggage and snow hampering her style (stilettos don't do well on ice..) Jenna also has to fend off a handsy customer on her first day. This customer is found dead later on (killed with a stiletto heel) and handsome Chief of Police Cooper Dear knocks on Jenna's door, considering her a suspect.

Jenna decides to do some sleuthing of her own. In the meantime the town has a bet on which guy Jenna will get involved with. Will it be the Chief of Police or Jenna's firefighter neighbor Matt? Both guys seem interested but Jenna wants to get over her breakup first AND solve the murder she is accused of. The book is written in the easy-going style this author is known for. We do get little information about the murder or the murder victim himself, but somehow that did not matter at all.

I really enjoyed this first in a new series. I also liked Jenna, even when she seemed a bit obsessed with clothes and makeup. She is no ditz! The town with its inhabitants seemed friendly and I can't wait for more stories about Jenna and her new friends.

*** I received an ARC from the author, but I also pre-ordered a digital copy for myself. This is my honest and voluntary review. ***

One of the best yet. Gina has outdone herself with this murder mystery, leaving me guessing until the very end. I was so happy I couldn't figure out who the murderer was in beginning. Very well written.

I began the series with "This better be good i am having a great run so far with some nice books, i don't want to break the stride "
And i finished the book with a big smile on my face.

Second to romance my favorite genre is mystery and this was the perfect combo. The whodunnit mystery with a love triangle. Call me a buzzkill but i couldn't place Matt as a competition he was always to be friendzoned.

Cooper on the other hand, could match with the fiery Jenna. I liked her fashion sense, optimism and her no nonsense attitude. Jenna Cooper and Matt together in a scene equals me grinning a lot.

The reaction to getting back her bag was absolutely hilarious. When she saw the murderer with a gun, her response was "that's not cookies".

I loved the last chapter when everything gets revealed, can't wait for the romantic relationship to develope though. ❤❤❤❤

3.0 stars. After a recent breakup, Hollywood stylist/Jenna heads to snowy small town Minnesota wearing stilettos and a dress (eye roll) to help her Mom with her 2nd hand store. Spends most of her time trying to play amateur detective and dodging two would be suitors. All the while still wearing stilettos in the snow despite someone giving her sensible snow boots. Ugh! Some would call this book light hearted and fun. I just thought it leaned more towards silly.

Not a fan of the love triangle either. That just frustrates me. The Dectective Kate Rosetti series by this same author also shares the love triangle element. But the Rosetti series was a more interesting read.
This book, nah, not so much. Going to give book 2 a pass.

In the first book in the Murder with Style series, Jenna moves from California to Minnesota to help her mother with her struggling shop. First day back and she’s a suspect in a murder. This is another fun series by Gina LaManna and I think it just might be my favorite! A fun set of characters along with romance and mystery that kept me guessing. Can’t wait to see what happens next!

This is a quick feel-good read, for sure. Jenna has just moved back to Blueberry Lake, Minnesota. She has left behind Los Angeles, her career as a stylist, and the ex-boyfriend who dropped her once he became famous. The only things that really seem to matter at this point are her Louis Vuitton purse and designer high heels. When she arrives home, she moves into a house left to her by her grandmother. She has plans to help out at her mother's thrift shop, which could use a major shot of adrenaline. On her first day, however, she needs to tell off a stranger with grabby hands. The man turns up dead soon after- a high heel to the jugular. Of course, Jenna becomes the number one suspect. Word of this soon travels rapidly through the Blueberry Lake gossip train. Additionally, Jenna finds herself as the love interest of both her cute neighbor and the police chief who has pegged her as his main suspect. Of course, the town has a pool going to predict which man she'll end up choosing. Needless to say, Jenna decides to be the master of her own destiny by heading her own investigation to determine who the murderer really is. So I purchased this book because the advertising said if you like Janet Evanovich, this is a book to read. It is not that, but it is filled with quirky small town characters and odd priorities for its residents. The actual murderer and his/her motivation is pretty weak overall, but I guess there's not a lot of gangsters to choose from in a small Minnesota town in the middle of winter.

An easy breezy clean mystery. Jenna's high profile Hollywood breakup has sent her back home to small town USA. Living in her Gram's house & helping her mom in the thrift store is a step down from her stylist to the stars job. A swarmy man in the thrift shop puts the moves on her and a very public shouting match ensues and the man is later found dead. As a prime suspect in the murder Jenna tries to prove her innocence with town folk helping her. Cooper, the foxy chief of police and Matt, her equally attractive neighbor are in competition for her affections while trying to find the murderer and Jenna's mom and the rest of the town have bets going with who she will end up dating. A fun clean read

Gina LaManna has done it again with this new series! Jenna McGovern was a stylist to the stars with an actor boyfriend when the roof caved in. Thinking they had the world together, she was devastated when she was very publicly dumped and made a fool of. Needing to get away, she decided to come home to Blueberry Lake Minnesota where she spent many summers with her grandmother in an old Victorian house young and carefree with her cousin, May where she can help her mother in her thrift shop. BUT what could be a new beginning has turned into a horror show. First she shows up in Minnesota in lightweight clothes and high heels, stilettos to be exact and finds the airlines has lost her luggage with all her clothes. Her grandmother has left her the house and when her mother brings her there, she sees a major renovation project! She must try to make a go at being a stylist in her mother's shop while helping her mother increase her sales. When she finds her mother is trying to help by getting her a stylist job outfitting a high society wedding party she thinks all will begin to turn her way. She meets the handsome next door neighbor, a fireman who works with her cousin May's husband. But things for Jenna seems to go from bad to worse when the person she is supposed to style is a womanizer and wouldn't take no for an answer until Jenna threatened him with her shoe. He storms out of the shop and is later found dead by stiletto. Being a prime suspect, she has to find the murderer and clear her name. Here she meets the sheriff, Cooper Darling, another very good looking man. Now the story takes twists and turns with lots of red-herrings until the surprise ending! I can't wait to read Jenna's next adventures and how she handles not wanting to get into a relationship when two very handsome men are trying to change her mind! I received and ARC from the author but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

Talk about killer fashion! Gina LaManna takes readers on one helluva ride in her latest series, Murder in Style!

The pleasant old Midwestern town of Blueberry Lake, Minnesota gets its first lesson in fashion with Secrets and Stilettos. Our leading lady, Jenna McGovern, isn't one to be framed! Living in the spotlight and having styled many episodes of NCIS back in Hollywood Hills, she's picked up a thing or two. Whether the local chief of police likes it or not, she's not about to be caught in a neon orange jumpsuit!

This story is entirely narrated by Jenna with believable supporting characters that are hard not to fall in love with. All Jenna wanted to do was come home, help her Mom and get her fresh start... but LaManna just kept throwing her one obstacle after another! Every time I thought I had it all figured out and the unlikely killer pinned down, I found out just how wrong I was! All I knew was that I didn't want to put it down and that I needed to figure out how to get to June's Blueberry Jam Café!

What can I say, what can I say?!?! I absolutely relished in reading Secrets and Stilletos! LaManna's style, especially in this latest series, reminds me so much of Janet Evanovich. I was engaged and laughing the entire time, so much to the point that my husband started asking me what so funny only for me to read him a line or two, and we'd laugh together! I am very much looking forward to number two in the series, Lipstick and Lies!

Many thanks go to the author Gina LaManna for providing me an advanced reader's copy of this stylish little number! I'd recommend this to fans of her previous works as well as fans of Janet Evanovich! A cozy mystery favorite for sure! This is one you won't want to miss; pre-order now on Amazon or check it out on Kindle Unlimited starting January 10th! #mistyscornerreviews

Another hit out of the ballpark for this author. This is the start of a new series that has a lot of the humor you may be familiar with if you've read books from this author before, but not as silly or ridiculous as the humor is in the Lacey Luzzi series. Returning to her the small town her grandma had lived in, Jenna almost immediately regrets her decision. To say she got off to a rough start is an understatement. But being accused of murder on their first day in town would make anyone resentful. Having come from a glitzy career in Hollywood, she's having trouble adapting to the bitter cold lifestyle that is winter in Minnesota. Who else would wear stilettos in five inches of snow? While she is in a bit of a culture shock, I love her character. She is honest, and says what's on her mind, but not in a witchy sort of way. She is friendly, even when faced with less gracious folks. She tries to take the high road. (Of course part of the fun is listening to her inner dialect while doing so.) She is also a bit sarcastic. There is some romantic sentiments throughout even if she isn't in a romantic relationship. Everything is on the up and up. (Everything clean and safe for teens and up.) There are a couple romantic prospects (who are equally qualified and each perfect in their own way.) The mystery is too convoluted, but just the perfect combination of suspects and clues. There is the inevitable reveal that includes a minor altercation between detective and suspect, and even this has humor in it. :D This is an easy read, and well written.

*I received an ARC of this book.

Jenna McGovern moves to Blueberry Lake, Minnesota from Hollywood, CA to help her mom try to get her second hand store up and running to make a profit.
How is a fashion stylist to the stars supposed to help Minnesotians with their own styles when she can't even dress herself for the winter weather in the cold and snowy country area?
On her first day there, she is confronted with a handsy client who is part of a major wedding planned in just a few days. She actually has to threaten him to get him to back off. Just a few hours later she is being questioned by the local sheriff as the item she used was the same one used to kill him with.

Pro's:
Developed characters, a good storyline, and believable characters.
While there was more romance involved in this story than I normally care for, the author did a masterful job of not letting the romance overtake the story, and kept it as a mystery rather than turning into a chick lit.

Con's:
I'm not a fan of three way romances in stories and I hope the author has the MC make a decision of one or the other quickly. If a decision has not been made by the end of the third book in the series I
will be done with it.

The MC makes a "Too stupid to live" decision, and I really wouldn't have cared if this would have been a single book instead of a first in a series.

I have read a couple of other books from this author and I missed having some of the laugh out loud moments that were in the others.

I also struggled with giving this one a three or a four star rating.

This is the third series of Gina LaManna’s that I have engaged in (Shoot The Breeze was the first novel in one, which was GREAT! Shades Of Pink was the other, which was quite dire - I didn’t progress beyond book 2)!
Now this one: it’s far, far better than the second series I attempted, but not as good as the first series, which is far superior to both (& I suspect far superior to ‘Sprinkled)!

This is a far more adult read. Which just goes to show how versatile Me LaManna is as an author, she can write for YA as well as an older audience. This tale feels like a transitional series, straddling both genres in an embracing Cozy tale. Not heavy on character development - yet - but there is scope and hopes for that to develop in the next titles. This is really cozy reading with an interesting small town backdrop. I have high hopes for this series.

I acknowledge that I’ve said a great deal and yet told you nothing about the actual story: A transplanted Hollywood Stylist has relocated to Blueberry Hills. Ostensibly to help her mother breathe new life into her Thrift Store, but also to escape the very public/tabloid humiliation of being dumped by her boyfriend, who is now becoming a famous movie star.

She arrives in Minnesota , ill dressed for the winter weather, minus her 3 bags of luggage and becomes the only suspect in the homicide of a man that most of the town wants dead! The rest is Cozy… I listened to the audiobook version of this title, the narrator was good with both male and female character voices.

Jenna and Cooper and....Matt in Blueberry Lake

Jenna has come to Blueberry Lake, Minnesota from Hollywood to help her mother with her resale shop Something Old. She's not even been off the plane an hour when her mother expects her to be at the store to help style the best man at the upcoming Duvet wedding. To add insult to injury, her bags are lost and she has nothing to wear! When she gets to the store Grant Mark is already there and waiting! Then he tries to come on to Jenna and she's having no part of it! She asks politely for him to take his hands off her and when he doesn't, she steps out of her heels and uses one to fend him off! She takes off shortly after he leaves to go get some much needed sleep! She is awaken to a pounding on her front door. Chief Cooper Dear is on the other side and it's not to welcome her to town. It seems while she was sleeping Mr. Mark got himself killed! Then her neighbor Matt comes to welcome her only to be confronted by the Chief as he is questioning her about her whereabouts. What is she going to do? She was sleeping! How complicated can her life get on her first day in town? Then with not one but two hot men in her home? Only one way to find out, read this great story by Gina LaManna. It will keep you guessing on not only who the murderer is, but, which man she likes better! 😁

This book entertained me the whole way through. Not only was Jenna a character that made me laugh, but seeing how she cared so much about everyone made me really think she was a cool chick! The two love interests for her are one of the best things about the novel, where it is really hard to decide which one you like best. I can't wait to see how that plot aspect moves along.

Pretty much everything about this book is written beautifully. You can feel the cold and snowy setting, you can feel the guilt and embarrassment Jenna has at times, and you can feel the love that is in the town of Blueberry Lake. I think the series has plenty to work with for future books and I cannot wait to read them.

The solving a murder aspect of this one is different than other cozies too. Jenna finds her sidekick almost by accident, and you can be sure that those two will keep getting in trouble.

Overall, the book is full of fun, drama, and much more. It does not lull throughout, and you can't help but keep reading it.

The author provided me with an ARC but the opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Great start to a good series. Look out Stephanie Plum and Carolette Wren, there is a new chic in town.

Jenna McGovern is back in Blueberry Lake. After an embarrassing public breakup she has come home to lick her wounds. Finally taking claim on her dead grandmothers home and helping her mother get her shop off the ground, she is trying to find her place. But things get dicey when on her first day she encounters a handsy customer who ends up dead. By high heel no less and she is to blame. Thrown in the middle of a murder investigation is not what she planned but she must clear her name. But will she die trying?

This book was a great fun read. The characters are fun loving. The love triangle between Matt, Cooper and Jenna reminds me of the similar ones in the Stephanie Plum series and the Body Mover Series. They are always battling attraction and trying to win the girl. They are all a fun bunch.

Overall this book is a great read. Fun, exciting and very fashionable. I mean come on....Jenna has a pet Louie. wink wink... So grab a copy and enjoy this fun rom-com mixed with a dose of who done it.

This is a great book; this is the first book in the Murder In Style series written by Gina LaManna. This was such a great book, I kept me reading way past my bedtime! Jenna has recently gone through a very public and nasty breakup with her ex. She is heading home to help her mother with her floundering thrift shop. The first day back she is helping her first client Grant, the best man in a high profile wedding in town when he gets grabby with her. He doesn’t take no for an answer so she has to threaten him with the stiletto she was wearing. The next morning she is woken up by the handsome sheriff asking for her alibi. Grant has been murdered and she was the last one who publicly threatened him so she is the number one suspect. Jenna is determined to prove her innocence. This book kept me guessing until the end. I can’t wait until the second book in this series comes out. The story flowed very well and was very enjoyable. I can’t wait for the next book by this awesome author!

Jenna McGovern comes back home to blueberry Minnesota leaving Hollywood where she was publicly dumped. Coming back her luggage is lost. She is big on makeup and fashion with intent to help her mothers thrift shop survive. Her first appointment at the shop is with a Man named Grant who is very creepy handsy. She fends grant off of her with a new pair of shoes she borrowed. Only a couple hours later to have detective dear knocking on her door accusing her of murder.
It’s a small town gossip spreads quick. Who murdered grant with a stiletto to the throat? There is a town bet if Jenna will date Matt the firefighter or chief coop? Will her luggage ever show up. How long can she survive with the accusations, pressure and lack of job?
I love this book. It’s a great read with humor, romance and suspense. What more could a girl ask for?

I'm not sure why there are nothing but 5 star ratings but, I am clearly not in the majority with my thoughts. I didn't dislike the book and will probably read the sequel also out this month BUT the whole romance triangle was juvenile and worse than elementary school recess as one character said about the constant town gossiping. Anyone who acts like an immature conclusion jumper like Cooper has absolutely no business as a police chief so hopefully he only does that when it involves the silly romance triangle. She's in town less than a week and acts like a character from the movie 'Clueless' about so many things that are just basic common sense especially about the winter weather. I hope that the nearly 30 year old Jenna gets a clue the next time she falls down from wearing high heels in a blizzard because otherwise I won't continue to support this new series.

Jenna McGovern, reeling from a bad break-up, moves from Hollywood Hills to Blueberry Lake, Minnesota to help her mom get her thrift store off the ground. Jenna, who was a former stylist to Hollywood stars, isn't sure how her skills will be useful in such a fashion-backwards place but she is determined to give it her all. However things go wrong from the very beginning. starting with the airline losing her luggage and then her very first customer is a handsy creep who winds up dead and she is the prime suspect. Jenna doesn't trust the small town police force to solve the murder, so she takes clearing her name into her own hands.
I enjoyed this book. Jenna was delightful and the murder kept me guessing. This is perfect for fans of Sarah Strohmeyer, Charlotte Hughes and Janet Evanovich

If you like sweet books then i'd say this is for you! The main character had recently gone through a pretty public breakup so 100% understandable she is working on herself. There are 2 potential love interests: her sweet and sexy neighbor who aids her caffeine addiction! And the adorable police Chief who accuses her of MURDER! That's right MURDER! Our MC is the primary suspect in a murder investigation her first day back in town! The murder is solved by the end and it's someone I for one, never saw coming! I do look forward to reading the continuation of the story line and see who she ends up with! Or if she ends up continuing working on her own happiness, which is 100% ok also! #TeamCooper!!
I did receive this book at no charge in exchange for an honest review!

Super cute cozy mystery

I really enjoyed this super cute cozy mystery. Jenna, a stylist, is back in small town America after being publicly dumped by her Hollywood boyfriend. Her world gets turned upside down the first day. Lost luggage, snow in high heels a hot firefighter neighbor (Matt) , murder and mayhem. Nothing like getting welcomed to town but the equally hot police chief Cooper by being accused of murder. I loved Matt and Cooper, they were well written. All the characters are a little, sometimes a lot, quirky. My only complaint is the heroine Jenna is a little TSTL sometimes and that makes me crazy. She's sweet, likeable, and independent. I hope Gina fixes this. Looking forward to more in series.

Amazing as always

I might feel like a broken record when it comes to Gina's books but I love her writing. I enjoyed all of her other books and I couldn't put this one down. I love a good mystery with well developed characters (which she always provides) and some humour - and btw, this amateur sleuth did not figure it out until the "villain" was revealed. I love her main character who is self confident yet still has periods filled with self doubt and wondering if she has done the right thing simply because I can relate to that so much. I really hope you give this book a try and maybe read some of her other books because you won't regret it. I can't wait for the next book in this new series. Way to go, Gina LaManna!
