Betrayed: Ruby's Story is a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood set in a magical world and filled with hope and sweet romance. It's Book 4 in the Destined series, a collection of overlapping fairy tale retellings all set in the same world. Each story is self-contained, with its own protagonist and satisfying happily-ever-after, but they also tell an overarching story. Read them in order:
Torn: Novelette Prequel to Cinderella (get it free on Instafreebie - http://smarturl.it/torn-freebie )
Kaylin Lee lives in the Pacific Northwest with her real-life hero husband and two sweet kiddos. After a lifetime of staying up too late reading stories, she now wakes up too early writing them. It was probably inevitable.
This journey with Ruby was quite a challenge, both in the literal sense and while I was reading. This book talks a lot more about the History of the people, and about the plague that has been terrorising this city since book 1.
And now, we see how much the city is changing because of a drug called Arusae. Where it slowly kills the people, and Ruby's city has been given this and the people are suffering because of the family loss.
Ruby is a determined young woman, who lives with her harsh grandmother as the top journalist in the city. She has interviewed many high and mighty criminals, and her talent is that she can get any story from anyone.
So, when a source from a different city, pleads for help from the best journalist to come and help expose the clan who helped smuggle this drug into the city, Ruby knows this is her chance to get the story that will hopefully save her city from perishing because of the drug.
But her source, a member of the Wolf clan, turns out to be more suspicious and very judgement to everything she does and what she believes in and yet we soon find out that we shouldn't estimate Ruby, no matter how innocent and sweet she looks.
Both Ruby and Wolf must face many dangers during their journey to the next city, it will hard for Ruby to cope, she has a higher chance of failing than succeeding, and yet will Ruby find a way to prove her worth as a journalist who not only tells the story but tries to help the people?
This is a wonderful tale of love, friendship, of dangers and adventures, of sorrow, betrayals and mysteries revealed.
Such a great novel to the series, cannot wait to read more!
Received a copy from the author herself, for an honest review, thank you!
Seriously, the stories in this series get better and better! I loved this thrilling, dark yet sweet story of courage, love, betrayal, and redemption in the author's richly drawn story world. Ruby is tough and courageous yet seriously out of her depth, but she never gives up. A strong heroine for readers to love, and her love interest is also memorable. I would call this more of an "inspired by" than a retelling of Red Riding Hood. Very well written! I'm looking forward to book 5 in the series, releasing in just a few days . . .
This is the fifth book in the Destined series, a Red Riding Hood inspired story. I very much enjoyed this contribution to the series, even more than the previous few I think. I enjoyed the cohesiveness of this one, how things tied in, but the story didn't feel interrupted or oddly paced as some of the others have. From top to bottom, this book stood on its own, though the returning characters were a lot of fun.
The story itself was well-paced and covered an array of places. I kind of liked how each section of the story was chunked off in a different setting. All of it felt authentic, and the changes were refreshing. I wouldn't call this a page turner, but the further I read, the deeper I fell. By midpoint I was definitely trying to solve puzzles and wondering what the deeper plot was. I enjoyed the reveal, the villain is still a bit of mystery, but also developed as a whole for the series. Some serious stuff got revealed, y'all! I think this book has also done an excellent job of leading up to the next one in the series and creating anticipation. (Good thing it comes out tomorrow!) Red Riding Hood isn't at the top of my fairytale list, but this was a fun twist on the tale and one that I must say I thoroughly enjoyed. The nods to the tale were creative and subtle, clever, I thought.
The various settings were well done, unique and distinct. The world felt much more developed and filled out in this book. We dug deeper into cultures, histories, magic, etc. In fact, I really liked the whole university and professor bit about this one. The clans fascinate me. I liked seeing the world operate through that dynamic, and was a little sad at the end for, well, reasons. XD But the clans are unique and well done. I think I might have liked a little more of the dynamics between the clans themselves, but there were plenty of tense moments to relish, too.
Ruby was a great character on many levels, but her castmates really shone in their own right I think. Ruby was authentic and relatable. Her doubts and insecurities were very well done! I never felt overwhelmed or bogged down by them. The story wasn't overpowered by her flaws, but they popped up at the right time and drove the story on; they drove her on. Lucien was so much fun! I'm a bit of a sucker for the tall, dark, and mysterious. He had so many sides and layers to him, but his true self was the most beautiful of all. I liked how even though he was multi-faceted, every side fit him and built into who he was. I can't rightly remember her name at the moment (Celine?), but Lucien's cousin was awesome. I really hope we get to see more of her. She felt like another deep, layered character I'd love to get to know more about. Of course, I loved Astrid and Auntie and the crew at the inn. And, sidenote, but so glad Zel is so central! I love her!!
Content: there is no swearing, no explicit scenes, and very mild violence. There are some themes of self-worth and doubt, betrayal, duty vs desire, and drug use (nothing is shown graphically, but there are characters who die and suffer due to the spreading epidemic of the drug). The romance is sweet, but realistic, and never goes beyond a long-awaited kiss. I'd feel perfectly comfortable sharing this one with a pre-teen or perhaps younger if they were interested (and if the drug-use was addressed).
All in all, an excellent addition to the series that I rather enjoyed more than I thought I would. I did receive a free ARC from the author, but unfortunately between life and losing it somewhere on my kindle for nearly a year (I'm so sorry!!!), it took me this long to get to it. Either way, these are clearly my own opinions. :-) On to book 5!
Notable Content: Flirting and implications of sexual desire. Kissing. Brief magical torture.
I loved the arc/theme of self-doubt and self-acceptance in this book! I also loved learning more about Draicia; the world is so developed and full. The characters were excellent, and I especially loved Chloe. I'm hoping she gets a book of her own eventually! I also really loved Astrid and the Professor. The romance was good, but I didn't find it exceptional. The writing was good. I was a bit confused in the thick of things, but it had a bit of a recap-and-tie-up at the end that helped a lot. Some loose ends from the other books were also tied up, and stakes rose, so that's exciting! I'll definitely be reading Hunted when it releases!
I wasn't sure how this one was going to go in the series because it felt disjointed (Cinderella, Rapuzel, and Belle are all introduced in the first book but Ruby isn't), but the author really pulled it together. I particularly enjoyed this book - I loved Ruby - she was very real, authentic, and a great character that displayed growth in herself throughout the book. I thought the background and continuation of the larger story was particularly well done here. I wasn't as satisfied as I'd like to have been with the ending since it's the last one in the series available, but I understand leaving a somewhat open ending for another book. Overall very pleased with this series and would recommend.
This is by far the best book in the series!! The story was told at a perfect pace. The characters were perfectly flawed, but fought for honor, love, and forgiveness. Each chapter proved themselves forgivable and worthy.
I wish I had tons of money so that I could just buy this book in print like a thousand times and just throw them over the railing to my adoring fans ( If I were a princess who lived in a castle with an awesome balcony).
And we finally get to discover who is behind the aurea. It was a huge surprise and I cannot wait to read the next installment.
Best one yet! I love little red riding hood retelling and this one was so good...Seriously loved this. Heart pounding and exciting. Love the land she has created. Can't wait for more.
Another great addition to this story! I feel like this series is highly underrated! So much adventure, such great characters, and a really creative way to tie all the retellings together.
A great take on Little Red Riding Hood. Again this is another worthy addition to the series and I enjoyed it a lot.
Ruby was a fun character who is really good at journalism but has no passion for it. She sets out on one last big story in hopes that it'll somehow earn her freedom from the paper. I was a little hazy on exactly why an adult woman didn't just tell her grandmother she hated her job and was going to pursue her dreams. I also am not sure that proving you're a great reporter by getting the story of the decade is going to convince said grandmother to let you go. I think it'd do the opposite.
Anyway, the extremely unprepared Ruby sets out to Zel's home city and begins to untangle the mess there.
I liked how much general series advancement there was here. We finally get to see some of the deeper things that are going on. Beyond a little rebel group blowing up Ella's university, or Belle's father trying to takeover the city, etc. Here is where we finally start seeing how things are connected and what is going on behind the layers of surface villains.
I think everything was a little easy for Ruby. She easily finds lodging with nice people, on her first walk bumps into just the right kid to point her to just the right person to find a job and answers. Ruby isn't subtle and I was waiting for her direct questioning and wanting to work for the top criminal organization to make people suspicious.
Instead she gets answers and a job and winds up exactly where she wants to be. After ONE visit to the Wolf compound she comes out with a lot of answers to questions when she was hardly there at all and who's going to get lucky enough to have the perfect conversation going on to overhear?
She only gets in one other visit to the compound and that answers any remaining questions. She's also rescued easily from each dangerous situation, etc.
It was almost a little too neatly done.
Again the romance was flat. Ruby and Wolf spend little time together and the couple of spare moments they are together does nothing to make you believe a romance is blossoming.
So the ease of Ruby's story and the romance were my negatives here, but I loved the plot and the setting. I also liked some of the new characters they introduced and getting some of the dark information on who's behind everything.
The "Destined" series by Kaylyn Lee remains one of my favorite series, and this book was no exception. I'm sure many people agree that it's fun to imagine how we would survive if we were thrust into our favorite fantasy story, and I feel like Ruby's character would be me! It was so fun and hilarious watching her go from elite journalist to the risk-taking adventurer she became. So many times I feel like female characters are not written realistically when it comes to how they respond to their first adventure, but Ruby was so relatable and deep. I love the creative way Kaylyn Lee incorporated elements from the "Little Red Riding Hood" story, and while like the other books in this series "Betrayed" is not a true retelling, it is so enjoyable to have the twisted version of the story and get little snippets of the fairytale. The romance is sweet and clean, and I really appreciate how pure these stories are while remaining fun and full of adventure. Highly recommend this series to any fantasy lover.
This book was hard to rate. I didn't really like Ruby, or connect with her as a character - i felt her wishes were too superficial, and her characterisation rather inconsistent as she waffled between weak and strong. But the story was really gripping, and against all my expectations Kaylin actually managed to pull the different threads together and tie up the story really well, and there wasn't that whole terrible cliff-hanger ending (she's learning!)...in the end, i just couldn't find enough major issues to validate downsizing the story to a 3-star. Plus, it's by an indie author whom I think has lots of potential! So, four stars. Oh, and can i just say - i LOVE Chloe. She's amazing badass!
There is a lot in Ruby's story. I think this is supposed to be the Little Red Riding Hood retelling. We do have a red cape at the beginning, we have a grandmother, and we have the Wolves! That is pretty much as far as the commonalities go.
Ruby is a reporter who is burning out. The world around her is an ugly place filled with aurae, a drug that deadens the soul of it's users, and deceivers, and users. Her grandmother is on a crusade to find out where the aurae is coming from and to rid her city of it. She involves her granddaughter in the search, which takes her to Dracia and the Wolf clan. But there is far more to the spread of the aurae than they ever dreamed.
THISBOOKWASAMAZING!!!! I loved it SOO much. It was by far the best in this series. I loved the way Ruby's character was shaped throughout the book. She had a VERY determined spirit throughout, that helped her keep going. This book further explored aurae, and although in the **SPOILER** epilogue it wasn't quite resolved, it still intrigued me to the fullest extent. **SPOILER** I enjoyed how Lucien and Ruby's relationship ended, and how they decided to try being completely honest and true. This book left me longing for more of the Destined world, so I am super pumped that the next book is already out.
This story was full of action, mystery, and suspense. I loved following Ruby as she pursued her story. The characters were easy to love (or hate in some cases) and every book in the series seems to bring the story even deeper into this amazing world. Though a reader could benefit by reading the stories in order, all the books so far would still make sense as a standalone. The connection to Little Red Riding Hood was subtle, including none of the over-the-top features included in the original story, but still containing enough elements to be recognizable.
I didn't realize how much I'd missed this world until reading the first chapter of this book and reimmersing myself in the setting. Definitely ideal to read these books in close sequence because there's a lot of assumption that you're familiar with what's been happening instead of spending a bunch of time rehashing what's unfolded prior in the series. (Thank you!!) This story felt more introspective as internal character development occurred amid an action-laden plot. I appreciated the tension that was maintained throughout the book and the satisfying resolution at the verrrry end.
I have enjoyed the three books in this series that I have read. While they are based on fairytales, they are not retelling the story. Instead the references are more like a nod in appreciation.
These books have been fun to read, but this one was definitely one of my favorites of the series. I loved the final lines of the final chapter before the Epilogue. What a great meaning and message indeed! 💞
Sometimes emotions get so strong all you see is red. You can't separate what you feel from reality and everything gets blurry. Then when you get a chance to get away your perspective changes. Perspective can make all the difference.
Little Red Riding Hood told in a way you've never thought of before. Find magic and meyham, adventure, struggling to find truth, and freeing nations from bondage. All in this incredible story! Highly recommended. Happy Reading!
I enjoyed this story. The epilogue made me consider giving it 4 stars since I found it to be a frustrating cliffhanger, but I did really enjoy the rest of the book.
I don’t know why, but I could not get into this one! I’ve read all the others and absolutely loved them...but this one took forever to read and I just couldn’t connect or get into it at all 🤔
This was my favorite book of the series! Runny is so scared, yet brave. The love interest is so real and dangerous, yet a heart throbbingly tender. Theres a big quest that gets even bigger before the end and hope for a bright future in the midst of extreme darkness. I definitely feel in love with Dracians and there City before the end of the book.
The Destined series takes a turn from Ella's family and friends and tells the story of Ruby, a local news reporter. She was determined to figure out who was dealing the drugs that were killing the people in her city one by one. Someone was choosing to prey on the poor and those who had lost everything in the plague by giving them a drug that would "take their problems away." Ruby wanted to save those in her city, and to do so, she would have to travel outside of the city and do an interview with a member of the Wolf Clan, and finally figure out who has been bringing the drugs into the city.
This story started a bit slowly than the other books in this series, but it sped up around halfway through. Ruby spends the first part of the story lost in the woods as she tries to find her way to the Wolf Clan, and she meets a mysterious figure there who gives her help along her journey. This Wolf refuses to trust her, but he also won't leave her outside the city limits to die on her own. Once Ruby reaches the city, she learned more and more about the Clan, the drug dealing, and the truth behind her city.
This was the only story in this series where I didn't quite agree with the pairing. I did not think that the Wolf and Ruby were a good match for one another, even though it was painfully clear from the beginning of the story that they were supposed to be. I wanted Ruby to be with someone as passionate about their craft as she was passionate about her journalism, and although Wolf was passionate about his Clan, it did not seem equal. I just didn't connect with Wolf much, but it could be just me!
Overall, this was unfortunately probably my least favorite book so far in the series, but that doesn't mean much because I have given every other book a perfect rating! I still quite enjoyed this one, even if I didn't love it as much as the others. I can't wait to see how Ruby, this unique and ambitious character, will be included in the future books of this series.
I would recommend this book series to anyone looking for a unique fairy-tale retelling series full of action, adventure, and romance.
