I like this book. It's fun, engaging, and full of colorful strong characters. If the personalities in the book are stimulating, the narrative is more enjoyable and allows for a better connection with the author. The result is worthwhile. That's the case with this one. Frederic & Cassandra Book 1 is intended for younger generations, but in my opinion, some adults would enjoy it too.

Frederic & Cassandra Book One, The Sinister House is a Young Adult/New Adult novel that introduces us to a large cast of characters, living in the small town of Cary, Virginia. Frederic and Cassandra are good friends, on the verge of discovering they may be more than just friends. Frederic, whose parents operate the Woodland Inn, is a member of a group of buddies called the Black Ops. They’ve decided the old house up in the woods, that they call Sinister House, would make a fabulous base of operations/clubhouse. Unfortunately, so have another group of truly unsavory characters.

This story winds its way through many dangers and adventures involving the young people of Cary, and takes us through the period from just before Halloween to Thanksgiving. Along the way, the characters develop and learn both about the realities of life, and themselves. Many of them show remarkable courage in the face of truly unspeakable events, such as the discovery of a human trafficking ring operating out of their quiet town. The Black Ops are called upon to be heroes, and both Cassandra and Frederic have reason to be truly thankful, by the end. Young readers will find much with which they can identify, in this novel.

I feel the heart and soul of Sinister House are wonderful and it presents an adventurous, fun and also thought-provoking story about modern small-town life and a courageous group of teenagers who face some harrowing life-and-death situations and decisions. I enjoy the way Kathleen Dixon describes each of their unique personalities and each kid’s sense of right and wrong. The characters are real individuals, each at a different stage of development, and I think the author conveys this and their relationships really well. The deceptively calm small-town setting and the old ruined mansion make a good center for these kids’ world.

A rewarding read that starts out strong and doesn't let up. The Sinister House is a mystery that builds with enough twists to keep you guessing and has well developed characters that keep you invested. Younger readers as well as older ones should be able to cling to the good writing filled with intrigue, suspense, comedy, and heart. A story that won't leave me anytime soon. Highly recommended!
