After narrowly escaping with her own life from Steven, the father of her child and an abusive heroin addict, Tammy Mellows believed she finally gained control of her own self.
She couldn’t be more wrong. When a new love interest enters her world, the relationship unveils hidden demons Tammy never knew she had, and fears they will destroy her newfound love with Dwayne, which had become the most important thing to her, other than her son.
Faced with unexpected challenges, she finds solace on the ocean and becomes a commercial fisherwoman—an industry dominated by men. Some of whom question her ability and stamina to make it through the season.
Still trying to cope with her own personal battles, she now finds herself facing high expectations in order to be accepted by the rest of the fleet, and for self-gratification, she must push herself to the limit.
Will Tammy overcome her demons and find happiness with her new love?
Will she succeed and prove herself enough to become a member of the fishery?
Or will it end up being too much, resulting in her losing it all?
When I finished Reckless Beginnings, my heart was torn apart for what Tammy Mellows life had been like and what she had gone through. Some bad choices in her life had put her in some awful situations. Better Endings picks up with Tammy finally able to move on with her life after an abusive relationship with the father of her son, Matt. But now she has insecurities and trust issues and she becomes dependent on alcohol. Where will her life go from here?
Book 2 in the series, Better Endings, is Tammy's story of overcoming and finding the way for herself to be a better mom and a stronger woman. There are challenges she has to face and those aren't easy. Does she have the strength, determination and will power to find the right path for her life and her destiny? Then what should happen but in walks a hunk of a guy named Dwayne and Tammy's life takes a turn.
I love the character of Tammy. She's a strong hearted and determined woman who will do what it takes to provide for her son. She's not afraid of taking on challenges and working hard. She still believes in the American Dream and that there is a better way. It's just figuring out what that is.
As the story progressed, I felt like was right in the thick of things with Tammy. When she finds that she loves the life surrounding the world of commercial fishing, I was enthralled with how descriptive the writing was. I learned so much from the work it takes to even get out on the boat. Then the dangers and hazards of being out on the sea with unpredictable weather had my palms sweating. The writing is detailed and intricate....I was as involved in the action as the characters were. Then the other side with the peacefulness and calm feelings of being on the docks and water it brought to Tammy were just as well written. I truly cared for this character and really wanted her to find her American Dream and happiness.
I want to thank Ms. Grant for the honor and opportunity to read an ARC copy of this book. This review is my own thoughts and opinions of a great sequel (which can be read as a stand alone) and I recommend it highly.
My first book read in 2020 and couldn't have read a better book. Am a big fan of Ms. Grant's books and loved this one. Continuing in the Tammy Mellows series again I was drawn into the amazing life of this character. I love how we got a little reminder in the beginning of book #1 Reckless Beginnings although it can be read alone also.
After narrowly escaping with her own life from Steven, the father of her child and an abusive heroin addict, Tammy Mellows believed she finally gained control of her own self. At first I thought reading about life on the ocean and fishing was going to be boring...but I learned so much, was eager to turn the page and was just as excited as Tammy when things went right after being faced with so many obstacles. We all have demons to face one way or another and it just comes down to how we handle them. Looking forward to Book #3....because it's not ended yet!
If you have never read a Tina Hogan Grant book.....start now, you won't be disappointed!
BETTER ENDINGS is the second book in the Tammy Mellows Trilogy. Tina Hogan Grant takes her readers out to sea and regales them with sea-faring tales in a novel full of adventure and self-discovery. Tammy Mellows wakes up in a hospital room after a car accident, and her perspective begins to shift. Once she meets the man of her dreams, Dwayne, she wonders how she can change her reckless beginnings into better endings. She wants to tell Dwayne everything, but she’s scared of losing him if she reveals the reason for the car crash. Furthermore, she’s fallen in love with his lifestyle, and she wants to be a commercial fisherwoman. There are many things standing in her way: her gender, isolation from family and friends, and planning for her son’s care when she’s in dangerous waters. Even though she’s a hard worker, she’s constantly reminded that there are very few commercial fisher women. Will she be able to have the man of her dreams and live a life on the sea? I heard glass ceilings shattering everywhere, and I found myself rooting for Tammy and Dwayne as they formed their relationship and shared adventures. The details were plentiful, and I could easily envision Tammy’s experiences, even though I have seldom been on a boat. I enjoyed this book, and I’m looking forward to reading THE REUNIONS. I recommend BETTER ENDINGS for experienced readers with a taste for love and adventure!
Review for Tina Hogan Grant’s sequel to “Reckless Beginnings” the second Book in the sequel, “Better Endings”.
I absolutely loved the first book about the struggles and survival of Tammy, the main character in the story. Tammy starts out living with her mother in England then moving to America to be with her father.
The sequel takes off after Tammy barely escapes with her life from the abusive father of her child. Tammy copes with demons from her past, personal struggles and challenges. You will see how a young woman finds strength and courage to move on in life and find meaning and purpose!
Tammy is a strong and independent woman who has overcome a lot in her life. When she meets a handsome and hardworking fisherman her life continues to change. However, with the right amount of love, friendships and family this may be exactly what she needs.
I absolutely loved this story. I was completely captivated by needing to know what was going to happen and how it would end. I actually binge read this entire book in one night.
If you enjoy strong female characters, a wonderful love story, unpredictable twists and turns then this five star read is definately for you. This is the 2nd book in this series however, it can definately be read as a stand alone.
What can I say, I fell in love with Tina and the first Tammy Mellows book! Ms. Grant proved to me she was worth taking a chance on with this second in series! Wonderful writing! Great story, all the emotions had me shivering right along! The excitement on the new love feelings, the confusion and scary feelings with court, the struggle with alcohol, all raw, heartfelt! The hard work and happiness found out at sea, she kept it interesting, exciting without going into details to bore! Ms. Grant has another series out, I'm anxious to dive into. Even more excited for the third in the series Reunions!
Love this sequel to Reckless Beginnings , its so much like the author knows what ive dealt with in life that she wrote a book about it. Me, im a Tammy!! The story is written very well and you feel as you are out at sea with Tammy as she learns a new lifestyle, a new beginning for her and her son. A new love for herself of herself, and a man to love her as is. A story of a "Better Ending" from where she first began and the perseverance to become greater and never giving up! A really great book. Looking forward to more of Tammy and her family
This is the second book in the series of Tammy Mellows . The first one was Reckless Beginnings which I read first. In this story Terry Mellows story continues. All she wants is a better life for her child and for herself. She meets a man that is a fisherman and lives in a boat. She makes some hard choices that change her life. I enjoyed reading this second book in the Terry Mellows Series. I am looking forward to the next book in this series. I highly recommend this book that keeps you at the edge of your seat and keeps you turning the pages.
This is Tina's second book in the series as Tammy goes through a hard time to get her life on track. Still a good pager and I enjoyed this one as well.
This book grabbed me from the beginning. I had read the 1st book already, so I did appreciate the reminders of some of the events of that book. In Better Endings we see a woman who has made some unfortunate decisions and was battling an addiction to alcohol. She knew her activity was harmful to herself & her son, but was not yet ready to stop it. She met a man who was interested in her and she reciprocated the feeling. The story of their relationship shows strength on her part as she did not want to get into another unhealthy one. Learning to trust, hard work, love and family are themes that run through this book. I am glad I read it. Sincerely, Catherine Yahiaoui
Absolutely loved this book! I didn't want to put it down. I had to see how it would end! Strong female lead character. Just goes to show what motivating can do! Highly recommend this book!
I really enjoyed reading about shark fishing and lobster fishing, living in a land-locked state, you don’t hear much about it. It was also nice to have a strong female lead who is not afraid to work hard.
I totally related to this book! Shows how someone who endured such a hard past can become a strong independent woman and still learn to let someone in and fall in love and also start a new career and life! Totally 5 stars and highly recommend!
The continuing story of Tammy will keep you on the edge of your seat, wondering what will happen next as Tammy meets a new man, faces demons she didn’t even know she had, and changes her life drastically. You can’t help but root for Tammy as she struggles throughout the book, and you’ll have a hard time putting the book down before finding out what happens next.
Welcome to Tea Time this Tuesday, my Fellow Book Dragons! Tonight’s Gem is quite beautiful and calming, like the waves of the sea at sunset. It is cracked a bit and the edges are rough, this Gem has seen some hard sailing and rough water, but it seems to have come out just fine. It glows with a calming warmth and the colors of sunset. This is Gem Maker and Dragon Feeder Tina Hogan Grant’s “Better Endings”, the follow up novel to “Reckless Beginnings” but rest assured, you do not have to have devoured the first Gem to enjoy this one. This one does fine all on it’s own.
Our friend, Tammy Mellows, and that is how I will address her for I feel as if I have come to know her well now. Our friend, Tammy, is now working steady and shares a house with Judy, her friend. They are looking out for each other and watching each others children, so they can make it on waitressing income. When the story opens Tammy is in the hospital, the result of a car accident. On her birthday. Will Tammy’s luck ever change? Perhaps…
Tina has once again given us Tammy in all her reality. Tammy is not a martyr, not completely good nor bad, not completely innocent nor guilty, not completely naive nor completely tuned in; what Tammy is, is human. Tammy has faults, she smokes, drinks a bit more than her peers, is a single mom who works too many hours and is away from her boy too much, but feels the overwhelming pressure to work too much to give him all she can. She tries hard to be a good friend, sister, mom and worker. She is much like many young women in her age and she is, most of all, tired.
She meets a nice man, a decent man, a very handsome man. His name is Dwayne. He has a job Tammy has never been near before. Dwayne is a commercial fisherman. He is about to take Tammy on her first real adventure, at least her first positive one. And that is as far as I am going to go.
I loved this book, even though Tammy has her troubles, this book is full of hope. It’s a nailbiter at times, but it’s also a lovely bit of hope and right now, stories with Hope in them are to be treasured. If you are looking for a book with drama, a bit of suspense, a bit of rom-com and a lot of hope, this is the book for you! It has just recently released and I have a lovely tidbit of news for you! This is only the second book in the Tammy Mellows Series..a third is coming! Isn’t that lovely!?!
Get your copy of “Better Endings” on Amazon or wherever great books are sold! You will be quite happy with yourself for doing so! Thank you, again Tina for writing such wonderful characters and allowing us to peek in on them!
Please remember to join my Facebook page, for the next three weeks and perhaps beyond, I have at least 7 authors doing Take Overs, Interviews, Giveaways and more. You don’t want to miss out!
Until tomorrow, I remain, your humble Book Dragon,
BOOK REVIEW: Better Endings. (Tammy Mellows Series Book 2) by Award-winning author, Tina Hogan Grant
"If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always gotten. " These words were never more true than they were for Tammy Mellows...
Tammys' journey began with one bad decision after another, never thinking of the consequences of her haste regarding her actions and/or choices at an age when she was coming into her own and thought to have had the world at her fingertips~ nothing could touch her.
Better Endings spins what began as a heart-breaking story of struggle, loss, despair and sheer survival into a story where I found a renewed fondness for this fractured yet relatable character as she once again puts herself out there looking for the life and love she's deserving of through resilience, and strength. A new-found self-respect towards a life she can call her own by considering carefully on an entirely different level not only for herself, but for her son, becomes more important than ever. However, Tammys' life isn't void of the troubles that have clung to her just yet... The ghosts of her past are still playing games with her heart and her head as she struggles to free herself.
A chance meeting, a best friend, and a sea full of possibilities and promise bring Tammy full-circle into a world where she not only belongs, but begins to cherish, and holds tightly to ~ a place to call home that settles her heart and her mind through true love, family, and a willingness to let go of the past...
Ms. Grant has created an excellent sequel~ one that had me feeling all the feels from beginning to end as she took me through the good, bad, and the ugly but more importantly, the beauty that can come from learning by mistakes made, and in finding peace with ourselves no matter what life throws our way, and did so through the eyes of Tammy Mellows. A character in every sense of the word and one I won't soon forget.
I thank the author for my personal copy of Better Endings to not not only read and review, but one I enjoyed and can highly recommend... Book 3 in this series cannot come soon enough.
I had just finished reading the first book in this trilogy (“Reckless Beginnings”) and immediately jumped right into the second one. Tammy Mellows is one strong and determined woman! After her disastrous marriage to Steven, I was thrilled when she found love with Dwayne.
I loved the point in Tammy’s life when she took stock of what her love for alcohol robbed her of. Grant laid out a raw accounting of Tammy’s life.
And my admiration grew as I read of the unbelievably hard work she endured when she decided to help him fish for lobsters. Grant’s superb writing made me feel as though I was right there in the boat with Tammy and Dwayne. My heart was pounding as they battled their way through a tremendous storm. Can she prove herself in the world of commercial fishing, a world dominated by men? With Dwayne at her side, Tammy discovers just want she is truly capable of doing.
But like Tammy, I too wonder how she will be able to make this new life on the sea she so loves work for her young son Matt. Will she find a way?
This is a great story, based upon the author’s own life, full of emotions. I highly recommend this book and am eager to start the third and final book in the series.
Tina Hogan Grant continues to share her amazing experiences in her book, Better Endings - Book Two of the Tammy Mellows Series, which contains a Prologue of her first book: Reckless Beginnings. Better Endings shows the resilience of a Mother working hard to support her son through the roughest of times imaginable. She had made mistakes in the past that she did not want to make again. But she faces other challenges, when she realizes she is an alcoholic. Meeting Dwayne, a fisherman, was a light that she desperately needed. He also had a son. He gave her the support and love that made her want to be a better person. Tammy decided to become a fisherwoman and work with Dwayne to catch lobsters. This turned out to be an extremely hard task. Tammy was relentless in her pursuit to prove that she could do what the men could do. I never realized how much work was involved in the process! She definitely showed everyone that she was no quitter. Tammy was also full of surprises - that were at times quite unexpected. You will have to read to find out! Lol! Oh, and the storm that erupted, while they were on the boat - had me glued to the pages. Very exciting and scary! At the end of the book, I found myself turning the blank pages - looking for more! I can't wait to read what happens next!
This is the 2nd book in The Tammy Mellows series. Tammy has finally escaped from her abusive, heroin addict father of her son, Matt, and living in a small apartment with her friend Judy and Judy's small children. She is working as a waitress across from a bar that she frequently goes to on her way home from work. After a bad experience happens, Tammy meets a handsome commercial fisherman named Dwayne while she is at work. She is immediately attracted to him. Beautifully written story of Tammy's journey overcoming her demons and gaining control of herself, and how she builds a new life for her and Matt. It is realistic, emotional and exciting, with Tina Hogan Grant's memorable and impactful writing and humor. The story captivated my heart when Tammy overcomes her fears, with the love of her life's guidance, and becomes a commercial fisherwoman. There is terror when they are caught in the sea during an intensely violent storm and the determination and will to not give up when things don't go as planned, with the goal of accomplishing what is worthwhile. I highly recommend starting with book 1 and reading the series. You will not be disappointed. 5 stars.
After reading book #1, Reckless Beginnings, I couldn’t wait to read this 2nd book in the Tammy Mellows series. Better Endings is another 5***** book! The author has painfully written about her own life story - the good, the bad and the ugly. In the beginning of the series, Tammy always seems to be that person who makes bad choices that have life changing and sometimes threatening consequences. But there was one choice in her life, that kept her going ... her young boy Matt. This choice will ultimately put her on a path to a different type of life. Matt is the driving force that helps her make some positive lasting choices in her life. In this book she meets Dwayne who will help her to realize what a strong, confident woman she was meant to be. Tammy makes choices that take her on a journey she never saw coming- a deep love that many never experience and a career unheard of for a woman at that time. This choice, though she never saw coming will ultimately and completely change her life! Now can’t wait to read Book #3 - The Reunions
Better Endings definitely did not disappoint. Tammy managed to break away from her drug addict boyfriend who also was the father of her lil boy, and thought she could finally get her life back. Content with her waitress job and being a single mom, although it was difficult, she finally was in control…or was she? After Dwayne came into the diner and they were instantly attracted to one another, and their relationship flourished, she soon realized that there were certain parts of life that she had no control over, but with her boyfriends help and support, will she ever be able to break free of the demons that has control, or will it destroy the life she hopes for for her son and her new found love. After many bad decisions that led to tragedy, can she finally make a life changing decision that will lead to a happy ending? How can she choose which direction to take when one means distancing herself from family and her best friend and the other means distancing herself from her new life that seems perfect. I highly recommend this book !
A story about opening yourself up to love and chasing your own unique happily-ever-after, Better Endings showcases what happens when a strong woman uses her past and her pain to push forward. While this book is the second in a series, there is enough of a recap (tastefully done, after a gripping opening scene) that it could work just as well as a stand-alone read. I was in awe of the grit and stamina of Tammy, our leading lady, and found Dwayne to be absolutely irresistible. (I also learned a great deal about commercial fishing, which was a thousand times more interesting than I had ever imagined!)
There is something exhilarating about watching a young woman rise above her mistakes and follow the path her heart lays out for her, and something immensely satisfying about watching two very different people overcome the odds to make their relationship work. This book gave me the chance to do both, and I can't wait to see what the future holds for Tammy, Dwayne, and their families.
In Tina Hogan Grant's new book "Better Endings" we reconnect with the memorable characters from her first book in this series "Reckless Beginnings". And it is such a treat to to see how life goes on for the heroine and those she holds dear.
Grant encapsulates her first book so well in the prolog that her second novel in this series can be read as a stand alone! Although don't cheat yourself out of all the nuances of the fascinating first tale! And one should poise oneself to jump into this story packed full of wonderful scenes and characters take from Grant's own life.
Grant expertly uses her own life story as a basis to weave a heartwarming tale. Showing how one woman can go from some of the worst times life can toss ones way, to finding the best. It's not all a bed of roses for Grant's characters. But isn't that how we all learn to forge ahead?
This is a read that will open your eyes to life like you may not have lived, by the end, you will feel like you got very close!
Book 2 In the Tammy Mellows series. Based on true events.
Tammy waking up in the hospital, simply not remembering how this happened. But soon it will all come to light.. Definitely will make a difference in how she handles this journey called life.
Living life paycheck to paycheck as a waitress... sure doesn't pay the bills.. its a Struggle for sure.Tammy's main concern is her precious son Matt.
Now there's the Court cost.. things are tough on a single mom. But pushing forward is what Tammy does....
Soon Tammy Meets Dwayne. But not. Completely sure of this yet. As there's been others that only used her.. so will things work out for tammy.. And Dwayne.
I Highly Recommend this Book. And Book 1 Reckless Beginnings. These books are based on true events.. you will fall in Love with Tammy....
And Don't Forget to pick up Book 3 The Reunion. The ending story.. I'm soon to read it.. I've Truly enjoyed these stories..
This is book two in the Tammy MellowS series. Tammy has been content for the last 4 years, being a single mother, living with her friend, and working as a waitress. She doesn’t ever think she will be in a relationship again, and she doesn’t go looking. But one day while working, she meets Dwayne. And he’s different than any guy she meets. And soon, she’s pulled into his world of lobster fishing. And Tammy realizes that maybe, this was the life she was meant to lead.
This was a wonderful story, about a woman that have been to a lot. But she’s pulled though, and came out stronger. The she finally meets a good man, and is happy. As the book progresses, you learn more about how strong, and tough Tammy is. And you get to see her relationship with Dwayne grow. I really enjoyed this book, and am looking forward to the last and final book in this series.
This was another awesome book. Tammy had a hard life in the past and was raising her son. She had an alcohol addiction which definitely caused her some problems. After meeting a handsome fisherman, she was falling fast. He invited her to see what his life on the water was all about. Such a strong woman to try working in a male dominant job. Could she keep pushing herself to the limit to prove she could do her job out on the high seas. What a determined, hard working woman she was who loved her son and was trying to make a better life for him. I loved learning about shark fishing and lobster traps and all the hard work this involved. Can she be part of Dwayne's life living on a boat? You will have to read this wonderful story to get your answers. I highly recommend this book.
Once I started this book I couldn’t put it down. I finished it in two days and I can’t wait to see where Tammy’s life goes in the next installment. She is a very unique person. Not too many women would take on a life, with a young son, with a commercial fisherman. Or potentially swim with sharks! I definitely wanted to see Tammy follow her heart and she did. If you enjoy reading about strong women, who encounter real life situations and a true love story all wrapped into one, this book is for you!
I did not read the first book in the series. Thanks to the prologue, I was able to follow along easily. I will however be reading Reckless Beginnings just to have the full story.
I enjoyed this story about a strong woman - emotionally and physically. Tammy has endured abuse and is doing her best as a single mom, but depends on alcohol to make it through each day. An unexpected new love interest forces her to take a hard look at her life, and herself, and make some changes. I loved reading about her work as a fisherwoman. I even learned that they harvest lobsters in CA - I thought that was only a Maine and Florida thing. Looking forward to see how her new job and new relationship develop in the sequel. PS - There is some profanity and a few descriptive sex scenes, just an FYI for those who try to avoid such things in their reading.
Better Endings was an amazing read. It made me smile, laugh, and even cry. I have never been on a boat in the ocean and this story makes me want to be on one as long as there is not a storm in the forecast because that part of the book was terrifying. I was even surprised in the book by Tammy actually going to jail. I kept thinking that she would get some of the money for the shark fishing and Dwayne would help her out and she wouldn't go to jail. Then another surprise when she was literally only there for 12 hours. If you haven't read the book you definitely should, it was amazing and I can't wait to read book 3.
