Inheriting Trouble

Rate this book
The inheritance was meant to better her life, not muddle it.

Georgia Holton, wellborn but nearly penniless, is best friends with one of the Earl of Sherton’s five daughters. When she is invited to accompany her friend for two weeks of the Season, Georgia jumps at the opportunity to have a little adventure away from her small village.

The Earl of Crossley is handsome, wealthy, widowed, and jaded. He has no intention of courting any of this Season’s debutantes. After all, every woman he’s ever known has been dishonest, including his late wife. But when a chance encounter throws him into contact with the Sherton ladies and their lovely friend, he can’t help being drawn to Georgia’s beauty and endearing personality.

When confusion about Georgia’s small inheritance becomes known, a sense of obligation to right a wrong forces the earl and Georgia into close association.

But is she really different from any of the other women, or does she have an ulterior motive?

And can Georgia even consider getting close to a man from High Society, when all she wants is to return to her simple village life?

Sparks fly between these two, but it will take forgiveness and understanding on both their parts to reach a happily ever after.

This was a cute little freebie I came across. Not as predictable as it seemed when I started it.
Georgia is a Mary Sue who isn't cloyingly sweet. She's too sensible to be a doormat and tells the H what she thinks when she thinks it.
The H of course, being attracted to a Mary Sue, will have his problems solved forth with.
But it was engaging and the characters were nicely drawn.
If you are looking for a short quiet read with no OWs, then this is it.

Georgia is country gentry, but impoverished. She goes with her well to do friend to London to be her companion for the first couple weeks of the season.
Everybody drools over the H who is so handsome, but also rather jaded with a big chip on his shoulder. Fortunately he didn't turn into a slut after the disappointments in his life.

It was a sweet story and I would read this author again.

This is the first story I've read by this author. It is a novella clocking in at just under 150 Kindle pages.

Georgia is an impoverished girl from a small village, caring for her father and her younger brothers and sisters. Her bestie, Vigilia (this is a horrible name - and thankfully she is addressed as Vicky through most of the book), is the third daughter of Lord Sherton. Accompanying the family for two weeks of the season as Vicky's companion, Georgia is excited to see everything that London has to offer. On her first day, in her excitement to get out and about with Vicky, she literally runs into Crispin, the Earl of Crossley, then Vicky makes a slip telling Crispin that Georgia is an heiress. Sworn to secrecy, Crispin lets the tidbit slip out in conversation and now the rumor is flying all over society and the fortune hunters are prowling for her attention. But Crispin is regretful and tries to make it up to Georgia. Little does he know that falling for the talkative country girl may just change his life for the better.

This was a cute little story but several things held it back from being a great story. First, there was so much giggling and chuckling and gurgling of laughter and grinning that it was getting nauseating. And Georgia's temperament was hot one moment, then ice cold the next... all giggly at first, then red-faced with anger. But the emotional roller coaster wasn't justified. Georgia wasn't there to make a match on the marriage mart so I didn't get what the big deal was if everyone thought her an heiress, to be honest. Own it, girl. LOL! But on her second or third night in London, she's getting barked at by Vicky's older sister for basically stealing her thunder (in this, her third season). Oh wah.

In trying to make amends with Georgia, she and Crispin swap secrets... Georgia's inheritance from a village benefactor is a whopping ten pounds of a dowry - a small fortune to her impoverished family, but nothing compared to society's expectations of an heiress. Crispin reveals that he is a widower and has a five-year-old child of dubious parentage. He has accepted him as his own yet doesn't treat him as the blameless child he should. Georgia makes a bargain with Crispin to meet Christopher and they get along famously because she's essentially a mother to her siblings back home and knows exactly how to handle him. Crispin sits back in awe and suddenly decides he needs Georgia in his life permanently. His declaration of love after knowing her for FOUR DAYS doesn't work. Nope. It screamed too much of 'here's a mother for my child' even though the author dances around that reasoning. You bet it is a very advantageous match for Georgia and her family, but the proposal didn't evoke the feelings of love the reader wants to see.

The author spends a lot of time setting up for things that just whisk by in the timeline (of four days, mind you, so she doesn't get too far), with a lot of repeating of information, inconsequential scenes, or introspection that don't advance the plot, a lot of giggling, and dressing the girls to go out. I wish there had been more meat on these bones. I feel like if the timeline had moved a bit more and we had seen Crispin really come to appreciate and care for Georgia, perhaps even defend her honor from a fortune hunter, this could have been a much greater story. Everything just happened too fast, even though the pacing was quite slow. Does that make sense?

Overall, I give this 3 stars. I did enjoy the potential of this story and will check some of the author's other works. There is a short epilogue, but it's only fluff. Zero steam with really not even a meaningful glance or coy smile. One chaste kiss at the end.

Fast read. I didn't like how much the romantic lead used the word "chit" in his inner monologues and didn't like the mystery set-up across the 3 books, not self-contained.

This was a cute enough story, but I kept getting pulled out of it by some of the phrases and idioms the author used. They just didn't feel like they were from the time period. And the one "rang a peel over her head" should have been "rang a peal." :( Also hated how the hero kept referring to her as a chit.

Wonderful historical romance!

Incredibly well-written historical romance! The characters were so relatable and had a depth to their story. The plot was refreshingly different than other historical romances.

Invited to spend a fortnight as her friend's companion in London, Georgia is bubbling with excitement at the once in a lifetime opportunity. Even before the Sherton family arrive at their townhouse Crispin, the Earl of Crossley is seen standing on the pavement with a friend. Later, as Georgia and her friend take a stroll, she physically bumps into the stern-looking Crispin. Despite his misgivings about debutantes, Crispin cannot help but be charmed by Georgia's unaffected manner and spontaneous and joyful approach to life. Unfortunately, in an unguarded moment, Lady Vicky makes a declaration that has unforeseen consequences. Crispin does his best to set matters right, but the half-truth spins out of control, running away from them. This Regency romance is gentle and sweet, but it does have a depth to it as Crispin is forced to review his stance on marriage and women in general. Georgia has the tendency to bring out the best in people and as she challenges Crispin, he finds that his stony heart begins to crumble. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.

A sweet and clean historical romance that will leave you with a smile!
Georgia has a bubbling personality and quite straight forward as he has to be with taking care of her family.
When she joins her friend for part of the season she did not have marriage with a member of the Ton in mind.
The Earl is a widower and has a heir that he does not acknowledge.
It takes Georgia to open his eyes and his mind.
A lovely story.

A short, fluffy tale of an impoverished country lass, with a sickly father and several brothers and sisters she takes care of. Her best friend is the third daughter of an earl, whose country estate is in the same county. Her friend invites her to London to be her companion for two weeks during the Season. She soon stumbles (literally) upon the Earl of Crossley, who is a widower. His marriage was an unhappy one. This led to the earl's distrust of women and avowal to never marry again.

Georgia, our heroine, is quite different from the debutantes of the ton, and the Earl of Crossley finds her intriguing in spite of himself. The only angst in this tale is the requisite dislike Georgia has for him, which he finds amusing. Except for the balls and the walks and carriage rides, there is little action.

Georgia is a bluestocking, according to her friend, Vigilia, but we see no evidence of that at all in the book. Instead, she's silly and giggly and quick to anger, although she's honest and usually makes sensible decisions. The story is tied up too quickly at the end. The Earl of Crossley called her a chit with eye-rolling frequency. That was a derogatory term in its day. If his opinion of her was that negative, why did he pursue her? And she resented him for revealing her secret and for his treatment of a child. She wanted nothing to do with him. There wasn't enough transition from derision to attraction on his part, and from angry dislike to attraction on her part.

With a bit more development and editing of errors, and a better knowledge of Regency vocabulary (there are many modernisms), this could be a nice book. It was a nice diversion, though, with a cup of tea.

I wanted sooo bad to like this book, but there were too many aspects of it that rubbed me the wrong way. Like why is everyone always grinning? There are 51 instances of grin, grinned, grinning, etc. and it's too much! Same with giggling, laughing, chuckling--the Season was not an episode of SNL. Also, I just couldn't bring myself to like the love story. Crispin is snobby, Georgia is grinning like an idiot constantly, and there's no reason for them to be in love. Additionally, there were just too many modern phrases included that it took me out of the story each time they occurred.

Profanity: None.

Triggers: Child neglect on an emotional level. Betrayal in marriage briefly discussed.

About a 3.5 but I rounded up because the first 3/4 of the book was great. The ending was rushed.

You know how you can get really sick of certain descriptors/words reading a novel? I've never been so annoyed at the word 'chit' before, or read it as much as in this novel. It was irritating in the extreme for me for some reason.

But, despite my weird annoyance, I did enjoy reading this story. Georgia is a fun character; she's still nobility, but bottom rung nobility as the daughter of the youngest son of a baron. Her prospects are a nice baker or clerk in her village, until her best friend decides to take her to London with her for the season. Rumors abound about the friend of the Sherton's, and her own charming personality-warm, genuine, and honest-infatuate more than one person as she traverses London.

Enter Crispin Crossley, the spreader of the rumor that has just made Georgia unable to really enjoy herself or, heaven forbid, make a real match this London season. He's bitter, and thinks all women are manipulative and liars. Until he meets Georgia, who inspires his amused laughter and starts to change his mind about being a determined bachelor.

The story is cute, Crispin has a lot of issues, but his immediate interest in Georgia flips his switch and he can't stop trying to win back her favor after bungling and releasing a rumor about her in a moment of annoyance. The thing about this book though, is it should've been a tad longer. The pace of the romance was just fine until the last 15% of the book, where they both just dive headfirst into it and it's suddenly over. It was fast. Too fast to be truly appreciated as a satisfying romance. The start was intriguing, but it was definitely rushed there at the end. Georgia spends the majority of the time getting mad at him for myriad (understandable) reasons, and he makes an abrupt about-face that had red-flags all over for me. Yeah, that can happen, but I don't think basing a romance on 'wow, she's changed me' within two weeks time? Iffy at best.

And the subplot with Christopher? That disturbed me even more than it did Georgia. The fact that Crispin I was so glad Georgia took him to task for that. I wish the book had been longer to see the reconciliation there so I didn't end the book feeling like Crispin wasn't truly changed in regards to Christopher.

Still, it's a fiction. It was cute.

This is the first book by Wendy May Andrews that I've read and I enjoyed it.
Georgia Holton is the daughter of a lesser son of a Baron. She is barely 20 but has raised her 4 siblings and taken care of running her father's house since she was 13. She recently discovered she is eligible for a dowry bequest of ten pounds from a local benefactor. This is no joking matter to her for it will enable her to marry a local tradesman and thereby support her family.
Georgia's best friend is the 3rd daughter of the Earl of Sherton. She and Lady Vigilia are the same age and have been best friends all their lives.
The Sherton family invites Georgia to come to London for the Season but Georgia can only stay for two weeks. There are 5 Sherton sisters and they all donate some of their clothes for Georgia to wear in London.
Georgia is not looking for a husband in the great marriage mart; she simply wants to enjoy a two-week vacation full of memories to last forever.
The Earl of Crossley is a jaded widower who distrusts women because of his philandering wife. He comes for the Season but never gets involved.
The first person Georgia and Lady Vigilia meet happens to be the earl. He assumes they are enamored of him and Georgia sets him straight in a hurry. He is astounded that anyone would talk to him that way but thinks it is funny. Lady Vigilia tells him Georgia has no need of his title or wealth because she is an heiress. They swear him to secrecy and he gives his word as a gentleman that he will never tell anyone.
Crispin, Earl of Crossley, is caught staring at Georgia at a ball. He is embarrassed and tells his acquaintance she is an heiress and he is not interested...but his friend is....and tells all his friends.
Georgia soon becomes the belle of the ball. When she discovers who started the rumor of her being an heiress she is furious. Crispin apologizes but the damage is done and if anyone discovers the truth it will ruin the reputations of the Sherton ladies.
Things get quite complicated and the Earl soon finds himself spending most of his time with Georgia trying to right the wrong he has done.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story.

This was a quick and entertaining read.

Georgia has come to spend two weeks of a “season” with her best Vicky. Vicky is an earl’s daughter. The family is wealthy. And with 5 daughters who must find husbands, the wealth is definitely needed. Georgia was the beneficiary of a bequest in the village. She will receive 10 pounds from a man who left money to any poor young lady.

Georgia is the eldest daughter in a large family. Her mother is dead. Her father is ill. And she will return after her two weeks to find a husband in the village. That way she will
be able to help all her younger siblings.

On her first day in London, she meets The Earl of Crossly. He is a man who is not open to friendship nor to being trusting of women in general.

Georgia charms him with her honesty. On the other hand, Vicky as a joke tells the Earl that Georgia is an heiress. That will cause problem after problem for Georgia.

This story is abut a young woman who finds it a normal thing to tell the truth. She also expresses her opinion at any opportunity. Both those qualities are neither expected nor understood among the ton.

Georgia is a cheerful young woman who wants to enjoy her two week opportunity. The Earl is a man who has no clue about enjoying simpler things nor does he find it easy to get into the habit of cheerfulness.

It is a story with humor. There are not any unexpected events but there is a happily ever after. That is what a reader expects in a romance.

The writing in this book is really quite simplistic, the amount of giggling the main character does is eye roll worthy and, due to the short length of the book, I feel like none of the topics in the book are explored properly, just introduced and solved very quickly. However, I actually did enjoy this, in a way - I read it quite quickly, I liked the friendship between Georgia and Vicky, I didn’t hate the romance and for someone who doesn’t normally like the ‘surprise kid’ trope, I didn’t hate it that much here. I just wish it had been a little bit longer to explore the topics and flesh out the characters a bit more. I wanted to see the Earl really work on his feeling towards his ex and the child she had, I enjoyed what I read of the romance but I just wish it had been developed more, at the end when the Earl proposes, Georgia points out a lot of problems she would have with the relationship, which I was full heartedly nodding along with, I feel like this would’ve been better happening in the middle of the book with the Earl showing character development throughout the rest of the book and showing Georgia that he is changing, rather than just him saying he will change and Georgia taking his word for it.

Overall I don’t regret reading this book, and I’m kinda sad that the next book doesn’t follow Vicky because I quite liked her and her friendship with Georgia, I just feel like it could’ve been better, but not bad for a book I got for free on kindle.

Though Georgia Holton is delighted to join her best friend in London for a fortnight, she has no expectation of finding romance. She has her motherless brothers and sisters to care for, after all, and only a meager inheritance of ten pounds to look forward to. When she crosses path with the wealthy but jaded Earl of Crossley, can she help him find the good in life?

I found Georgia's realistic approach to life refreshing. She isn't set on marrying a title in her brief visit to London. At times, though, her critical look at what was common at the time made her a bit tiresome. Still, her background made it realistic for her to raise an eyebrow at the goings-on of the ton.

On the other hand, I didn't warm up to the earl at all. I didn't feel like there was enough time or meetings between him and Georgia for him to change his view of the world so much.

Overall, this was a lovely weekend read. I would recommend it to readers looking for an easy and sweet read.

Cute and sweet, clean romance. This is a short book so everything moves quickly and while it wasn't exactly insta-love, it doesn't take long. I think what I enjoyed most about the book was every time Georgia spoke her mind to Crispin (which was a completely inappropriate way to speak to an earl), he found it amusing. She didn't act or speak like the husband hunting ton and he enjoyed it. His turn around in how he treats his son was quick but like I said, the book is short so there isn't a lot of time to develop everything. I also liked that even though Georgia is essentially the mother to her siblings and she knows she needs to provide for them, she is mature but could still giggle with her friend like a teenager and enjoy some youth.

It is a quick read so perfect for an afternoon or evening by the fire.

Georgia Holton, highborn with no fortune, who lives in a country village, is best friends with the Earl of Sherton's daughter Vicky. She was invited to spend a few weeks in London for the season with the Sherton family, when a chance encounter with Earl of Crossley started the rumor mill buzzing. She and the Earl are drawn to each other but both have obligations and baggage, will they stop fighting the inevitable or will Georgia go back to her simple life in the country?

This was a sweet story, with compelling main characters and vivid descriptions of life on the ton. Unfortunately there was too much repetition, and the ending was too rushed which makes this not a great read. I was disappointed with the end and felt that there was more to this story to make it more satisfying. Overall is was OK and an easy read.

Inheriting Trouble is a sweet regency romance and part of the Bequest Series by Wendy Andrews. It was well written and had great characters. Georgia Holton was invited to go to London to spend two weeks with her friend. She has no expectations of finding a husband. She just wanted to have the experience and adventure before she settles for a local businessman. Crispin, the Earl of Crossley, wasn’t looking for another wife. After his previous wife’s betrayal, he was content with his life. He had an heir, which he didn’t acknowledge, and had no need for another wife. Crispin was intrigued by Georgia because she was so different than all the other women. She challenged him to be a better person and a father. The book was sweet, clean, and a great romance to read.

Sweet, good writing, great characters, ending abruptly

This story's ending was a little abrupt, but otherwise, it was an excellent, adorable, sweet (which I truly appreciate) romance. There weren't any historical references in this story. The focus was strictly on Georgina, the Earl Crosslet with Georgina's friend Vicky as a "costar". 😁 But the plot was good, moved quickly to a happy ending. No drama really,no climax to make me wonder if the Earl could win Georgina's love after all or vice versa. Still I enjoyed it. The author wrote well, the characters were lively & interesting. I would have definitely liked to read about the wedding, because at the end I wasn't sure if they were married yet or going on a "date."

This is a really neat romance book. Georgia, has been taking care of younger siblings by herself. A friend in London invites her to stay for 2 weeks and she's able to do that.

Then there's Lord Crossley, a single man, deserted by his wife who had cheated on him and produced a son that might and not be his.

So, Georgia and her friend are there during the 'season' where women try to find rich husbands. She and Lord Crossley end up having numerous verbal battles and she gets on his case for basically ignoring his own kid.

Being a romance of this type you know what the ending will be. The pleasure is in all the things both have to go through in order to get that ending. Very well written and I've already gotten another book by the author, I liked this one so much.

It felt short.

And it was. The thing with shorter novels is that they have to be done right. They have to balance out the length with just enough detail to keep the reader satisfied and not feeling like they’re missing something. Inheriting Trouble was doing just fine until I realized I was 90% done with the book and still felt like I should have had at least 25% more to read. The ending really wrapped up too quickly.

That being said, the first 90% was entertaining and drew me in. I really wanted there to be more to the story, so that was done well. I’m just upset it ended so fast.

3 1/2 stars.

This sweet and clean regency romance with a lovely cover maintained my attention through-out. Georgia, visiting the London season as a special friend for a couple of weeks bumps into the Earl, resulting into a domino effect of events which puts her integrity into question related to gossip. The Earl attempts to right a wrong and Georgia, from the country expresses herself independently and honestly, unlike many others in the marriage mart. It has a singular plot with an expected conclusion, however, appears a bit fantastical when it comes to the timing aspect of it all. Otherwise, a relatively short and enjoyable read for those who enjoy this genre.

I usually try to avoid reading other reviews until I've written my own - and a quick glance just now revealed pretty much exactly what I was about to write - a cute little freebie. (I stopped reading there..) This was a fun read for a train journey, with an appealing heroine, so much wiser than all the "chits of the ton". The hero was a bit overly misogynistic in that his steadfast conviction that all women are bad ended up tainting him more than anything else. Instead of accepting that his wife was "bad", he ends up more or less acquiescing that the heroine is an exception to the rule and worthy of his love and respect. Fine. Maybe he will grow.

It truly is a Recency romance.

Not many writers truly consider the culture of Recency England. Manners and etiquette were extremely important. I can't tell you how many times I've been disappointed with authors because their world is unreal. This one however caught it perfectly! Even going so far as to explain the reasoning behind some of it, yet still making it an enjoyable story. Well done, Wendy May Anderson! I really enjoyed it. Almost as good as my beloved Goergette Heyer novels.

What an adorable romance! I loved the whole book from start to finish! The tale of a young woman of noble birth but of low finances running into a stuffy nobleman who is so full of himself it would appear that no one can get close. This young woman literally runs into him with her friend in the street and she breaks down the barriers by being a kind person who still speaks her mind. Sparks fly and all bets for them remaining unattached are lost! It was one of those awwww books that I find hard to put down!

Hmmm, just didn’t catch me. Cute story, clean, but just not there. First time reading this author so I’ll keep going, but some books grab you and some don’t, and this was a don’t for me- but could be a grab for others.
Georgia was a hard one to follow, she was either giggly or super angry, then back to the other so quickly, I couldn’t really connect to her character. And Crispin went from utter angry ice eyes to charming want to marry him in like 4 days. Their personalities clashed and weren’t very well outlined.

Will her sincere kindness heal his angry heart?

He's a widower who was betrayed by his wife. He's vowed to never trust another woman.

She's been taking care of her siblings since she was thirteen. All she wants is a carefree fortnight in London.

I love a well written and sweet romance with likable characters. Inheriting Trouble by Wendy May Andrews is all of that and more. The story is a simple one, but it's the characters that kept me reading. Of course this gem has a happy ending.

Content 411: This is a very clean historical romance that is suitable for any reader.

This book was cleverly plotted. When Vickie told Lord Crossley that Georgie Holden was an heiress, she never realized the trouble she would cause. Lord Crossley accidentally told a fortune hunter -- and the game was on.

When Crispin Crossley asked if Georgia planned to search for a marriage partner, she told him she couldn't. Then, it would come out that her inheritance was a mere ten pounds.

This story was charmingly told and lasted the correct number of pages--a delightful story.
