Warrior's Wrath is Book #3 in The Pict Wars series set in ancient Isle of Skye, Scotland. Readers who enjoy Diana Gabaldon, Hazel Hunter, and Kathryn Le Veque will love this high-action, emotional Scottish Historical Romance.
Multi-award-winning author Jayne Castel writes epic Historical and Fantasy Romance. Her vibrant characters, richly researched historical settings and action-packed adventure romance transport readers to forgotten times and imaginary worlds.
Jayne is the author of a number of best-selling series. In love with all things Scottish, she writes romances set in both Dark Ages and Medieval Scotland.
When she's not writing, Jayne is reading (and re-reading) her favorite authors, cooking Italian feasts, and going on long walks with her husband. She's from New Zealand, but now lives in Edinburgh, Scotland.
I had high hopes for Talor and Mor's story and whilst Mor did not disappoint (she truly is one hella badass) Talor .... hmm I'm not his greatest fan, though I did warm to him by the end of their story. I just wanted more for her, you know?
Mor is everything I want to read in a strong heroine. A warrior, a woman, a daughter and added to that she was so unbelievably brave, risking everything for others - just what you expect from a Pict warrior regardless of their sex. Talor, on the other hand, definitely didn't dazzle me. 🤷
Consumed by the need to avenge his younger sister's death, Talor mac Donnel slips into enemy territory intent on killing the rival chieftain who cut his sister down in battle. Though he comes close to succeeding, Talor's plan fails and he is captured.
The enemy chieftain's daughter, Mor, has grown tired of war and wants only to live in peace. When a crazed enemy breaks in, tries to kill her father, and subsequently captured, Mor's decision to free the prisoner changes everything for both of their tribes. If Talor can let go of the past and look to the future, the undeniable spark between himself and Mor could be strong enough to finally bring peace to their entire island.
It took me a bit to get into this book, but once I did I could not put it down and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Though only a few days pass in the events of the book, so much happens and through these major events both Mor and Talor undergo some major character development which, along with all the action, kept me engrossed. I found both main characters to be likable and was intrigued by the scenes we got from the enemy's prospective as well. Talor and Mor made a very unlikely couple, but they fit each other well and I enjoyed this well-written story.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Yet, there is always hope for a better future in this wonderful ADULT Iron Age🔪 Historical Romance💕 and Adventure, set on the Isle of Skye during the 4th century AD!
The characters are ruthless🔪💀 and stoic in their own way, as Talor🐺, a member of the Eagle tribe, and part of the four United Tribes of the island, goes into the den of the Serpent🐍 devils👺 to avenge the death of his sister at the hand of their clan chief👺.
The Serpent tribe🐍 has come from the mainland in an attempt to conquer the four tribes of Skye.
The people barely exist in this spare, brutal, harsh environment, yet they are ready to fight to the death to protect their lands and people.
The book is part of a series about the elusive Pictish people, the precursors to the Scots. There are six 📚books but they can be read as stand alone stories. Highly recommend for lovers of ancient historical fiction!
ARC Provided by Booksprout🌱 I also got the ebook with KU.
The author has done exhaustive research in order to bring the mysterious Pict culture to life in her fascinating ADULT historical novels.
At which point during a war do you decide enough is enough and only want peace? Mor has reached that point and she must make decisions that will either bring that peace about or have her killed. I absolutely loved Mor and Talor's story, it's filled with so much hope amidst the heartache, the losses, the need for revenge and the mistrust among the tribes.
Jayne Castel is the only author I know that writes so well about the Pict Wars and I have learned so much of their history through her stories. Adding a romance to the story just makes it that much more perfect:)
This is another very well written book in the Pict Wars series and I absolutely recommend it! I received an ARC of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Warrior's Wrath: A Dark Ages Scottish Romance (The Pict Wars Book 3) Warriors Wrath by Jayne Castel 4.5 Stars. This historical story is filled with emotional tones of anger, angst, hate, revenge, sacrifice, and yes, love. The people of the serpent were forced from their home on the mainland so they raged war and lay siege against the tribes on the winged isle to take their homes. Mor, daughter of the serpent Chief is a warrior and mourning the loss of both her brothers. She sees how the loss has weighed on her father and her people but her father has no plans in seeking peace or leaving the isle. Talor of the Eagle tribe is consumed by his grief over the loss of his sister, and can’t let it go without avenging her death. With winter starting he decides to exact out his revenge alone against the Serpent Chief who was responsible for her death. But, nothing works out as planned. I loved this whole series! You become attached to these characters and their lives. Cheering for them, crying with them, and hoping for all of them to have a hea. I strongly recommend these Dark Ages Scottish Romance novels to everyone! Happy Reading ♥️
Content: Adult Rated Steamy Romance: explicit open bedroom door scenes. (3-4 flames)
Isle of Skye 389 AD Step into a world of long ago when having power meant death to others and only the strongest survived and gained. Jayne Castel has such a gift with her descriptive words that make you feel you are there with her characters and can see what they are seeing and feeling their emotions. Mor, a female warrior, has lost her two brothers to war and now only wants peace. Her father, Cathal mac Calum, only wants revenge against their deaths. Talor mac Donnel was a man consumed with revenge of his own for the death of his half-sister. He saw who cut her down and it had broken something inside him. Cathal mac Calum, the chieftain of the Serpent tribe. He made his way to his home that the Serpents had taken, and there he would kill him, knowing it would also mean his death. But when Talor tries to kill Cathal, he is thwarted, by Mor and other warriors. Now as he and Mor look at each other, everything begins to change. I will leave it at that and encourage you to read Mor and Talor's story which I think may be my favorite, although I feel that in each book I read by this author! Amazing.
When I saw this book at my favorite book review site, I was immediately intrigued. As an American of Scottish descent, I will admit that I have a soft spot in my reader’s heart for any book that has to do with Scotland. Of course, I enjoy Scottish historical romance. But no other book that I have seen has been about the Picts. I had enjoyed this author's other set of books about a set of medieval sisters, so I was curious what this one would be like.
Aside from a few obvious things, like the belief in the supernatural, seers, and the types of dwellings, at its heart, this book didn't feel very different from medieval Scottish romance novels that I have read. I find myself a little disappointed in that. I thought the story started out very well, the first section with the heroine grieving her brothers and trying to close the circle with her own small ceremony that was poignant and sad. The author did truly show why she was so desired peace. She had already lost so much. Similarly, the first section from the “hero’s” perspective shows precisely the troubled state of his mind as he seeks revenge for his half-sister’s death. Again, we could feel his torment and raw anger.
After such a promising beginning, I didn't quite like the way that the hero's character arc went. For much of the book, he was either stupid or dishonorable. Not the way I like my romantic heroes to be. I didn't like the way he treated the heroine for most of the novel as well, which makes it a hard book for me to truly like. Yes, in the beginning, a romantic couple can struggle, but part of the fun of the romance is to see the thaw, which didn't happen here until too late for my taste. I did like the heroine. She is a woman of principle, who will accept the consequences of her actions even if she knows they will be dire; no man around her is of a similar principled manner, especially the hero and her father. I'll admit that I so wanted to like this book because I did enjoy the author’s other books and I like the idea of a romance in Pictish Scotland. but I found it to be disappointing.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
Warrior's Wrath The Pict Wars #3 Jayne Castel ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Talor mac Donel is consumed by hate and he wants nothing more than to avenge his sisters death so he goes into the occupied territory to kill the man who killed her, but things don't go as planned and he is taken captive by the enemy.
Mor on the other hand is tired of war and so many senseless deaths. Her people have swept across The Winged Isle, leaving horrible carnage behind them. Mor is a warrior, yet all she wants is to lay down her weapons and live in peace. So when a battle crazed enemy warrior breaks into their broch and tries to kill her father, she makes a soul wrenching decision that will change everything between their people.
Talor locks gazes with his enemy's proud daughter, Mor, and he realizes that everything he thought he believed about life and love starts to unravel. Together, they have the chance to bring peace to their war-torn isle, but that will only happen if he is able to let go of his anger and the past. Will Talor be able to let it all go? And will Mor be able to convince everyone that peace is what they need?
Jayne Castle writes a brilliant epic conclusion to this series that I couldn't put down. I adored this book. There were times where my heart soared and other times it plunged down into my stomach. The characters were perfect for eachother. They had a heat that was so hot you could burn your hand turning the pages. I savored every word of this wonderful book. As you can see I really enjoyed this story and would recommend it to other readers. Ms. Castle you wrote a fabulous book and I can't wait to see what you bring to the table next.
Rugged and fearless, Eagle warrior Talor mac Donnel sets out on a suicide mission to avenge his half sister. His need for revenge is all consuming, as is his hatred for the Serpent tribe. However, Fate has a way of changing hearts and minds.
Statuesque and fearless, warrior Mor is also the daughter of the Serpent chieftain. Her father's enemies are her enemies, at least she thought so. It's funny how Fate has a way of changing hearts and minds.
Of the three books in the Pict Wars trilogy by Jayne Castel, Warrior's Revenge is by far my favorite. It may be the last, but it is not the least. First off, I love the book cover. I also love a strong heroine who is equally matched on the battlefield and between the furs. Such is the case with Talor and Mor. I also love a story that is steeped in an ancient history that has all but been lost. Ms. Castel has truly woven together a compelling tale that is fraught with danger as well as an all but uncertain ending. There were times I was not sure how this author was going to pull together a happily-ever-after. Thankfully she did.
Content alert: Although any swearing is fourth century mild, there are some very steamy and descriptive sexually intimate scenes.
Disclosure: I received an ARC of this book from the author. I am voluntarily submitting my honest review.
I’ve read several of the author’s books set in the Roman and ancient dark age Britain period-- Roman, Celt, Pict, Angles, Scots, etc. These books are mostly all set on what is today the Isle of Skye in NW Scotland. This is book 3 in the second generation of the series focusing on the Picts. The first generation are found in the Brides of Skye books. These are the stories of the descendants, although the characters from the Brides books are still alive.
This book is focused on four Pict tribes who have come together, and now they fight a new enemy, the Serpent tribe, that have come from the mainland. The hero is part of the Eagle tribe of the Isle, while the heroine is part of the invading Serpent tribe.
I’ve read a fair number of these books, and I’ve liked some better than others. This one is very good, and I liked it a lot. Mor is a great heroine, and Talor is a stubborn, proud, but ultimately good hero. This feels like it is more Mor’s book than Talor’s. She is the central character, the one making the big sacrifice, the one we get emotionally invested in.
Mor is a Pict warrior woman. She’s tall, regal, and a valiant fighter. But she has a heart for peace.
If you enjoy ancient warrior tales, you will like this one.

The author did a great job with her characters and storyline. Talor is determined to revenge his late sister who was killed by the Chief of Serpent clan, so he heads out on his own to his former home where the hated Serpent people live. He is soon captured, beaten and tied to the wall of his former home in the bitter cold to freeze to death. Mor is the Chiefs daughter and only living child and who lost her brothers in fighting for her father and her clans new home. However, she is tired of the fighting and just wants piece for her clan but her father will not listen. She decides she is the only one who can save her people from impending war that is sure to come and her first step is to release her enemy from the wall before he dies and by doing so betrays her father. Mor will do whatever is necessary to have peace once and for all even if it means going to the enemy to do it.
This is a great story of how enemy's can come together for the soul purpose of peace for their people no matter the sacrifice.

I love series around family members or a group of friends. I love the series even more when the author intertwines those characters throughout the book series (it’s a pet peeve when authors don’t do that because what’s the point of the series and introducing the characters if they are not going to interact throughout the series).
a good job writing family and friends in this book from pervious characters in the series.
The development and interest in main characters and secondary characters was enjoyable. I really did like the H/H for this book; very well paired as a couple.
writing style is easy to follow, humorous moments, the give and take dialogue enjoyable.
I’m not a huge fan of ‘internal dialogue’ in books. I can only take so much before I start skimming through pages and I found myself doing that with this book/series. But nothing that that was to annoying for me.
romantic/sexual content is written well throughout the book (kissing, oral, love making) I’d rate it 3.5/5 (rated PG 17).
would absolutely recommend the book and the series. you don’t have to read the series in order but i think you miss the true storyline if you don’t read the series in order.
Every time I see author Jayne Castel has written a new story, I grab it. I know she will take me on an awesome rollercoaster ride through a period of history not many authors venture into. Warrior's Wrath is the final installment of the Pict Wars trilogy and it doesn't disappoint. It is the story of Talor, a warrior consumed by grief, hatred and revenge for an invading rival tribe and Mor, his enemy's warrior daughter sick of the bloodshed, who craves to live in peace. Both have lost loved ones in bloody battles but both are on very different paths. Destiny brings them together. This story grabbed me from the start and didn't let go til the very end. I found myself thinking about it during my busy day and I couldn't wait until I could start reading again! I loved it and was only sorry it had to end. I wanted more! Very well done, as usual, Ms Castel!!! I look forward to whatever you have in store for us next! Highly recommended!!!

Fantasy historical MF, enemies to lovers, take-charge herione slow burn, pregnancy in epilogue
FMC was different to most heriones. She was tall, a warrior trained for battle and had a hell of a lot of courage. She also literally tackles the MMC in the beginning of the story, and engages in a fistfight with him later on.
Yet this story was ultimately very nice and ended on a strong HEA. The FMC and MMC start off as enemies fighting this underlying sexual attraction between them. The insta-lust could have cheapened the story, but they don’t have sex until near the end, after they have developed more of a emotional connection and admiration for each other’s non-physical traits.
I think it was a dick move for the MMC to abandon the FMC after she saves him, but it makes sense that he did. I do wish they had spent a little more time together developing their relationship though, as canonically the events of the story happen over a handful of days, which is really short.
The people of the serpent tribe came from the mainland to Isle of Skye and fought the people there to take their homes.
Talor mac Donnel is of the eagle tribe and is consumed by hate for the serpent tribe after the chief killed his sister in a battle. He tries to kill the chief but is captured.
Mor, is the daughter of the serpent Chief and is a warrior who is mourning the loss of both her brothers. She is sick of war and wants to somehow make peace with the tribes around.
Can Mor and Talor make peace between each other and then the tribes around them.
This story has a little of everything, action, betrayal, suspense and steamy love scenes.
Another good story from Jayne Castel.

I don’t know why, but for some reason reading a character say ‘turd’ has stuck with me for this story. I mean, other characters have said it before and it was a little distracting, but here even though I think it was just once, it was off-putting. Forget all of the other odd bits in the story like our poor stoat-friend or the amount of times characters just did a 180 in their thought process, it was ‘Serpent turd’ that took me out, lol. The first book was the best in the series for me and at some point I was reading to see when that couple would make other brief appearances. Oh well, it’s still a quick read with some really mean characters and I love that not everyone makes it to the end in every story. I like that even for a romance, the harsh realities like war and death aren’t completely glossed over.
Amazing Read!! The story was simply amazing and I could not put it down! It grabs you from the very beginning. There is betrayal, romance, so much action, living with bad decisions, learning to trust, finding love in the most unusual place and so much more. Talor is determined to seek vengeance for his sister who was slain in battle but soon realizes the decision he has made in trying to seek vengeance on his own may not may the desired outcome. Mor, a warrior and daughter of his enemy, is tired of battle and blood shed sets out to try to bring peace. The story these two have together is simply wonderful!

After years of facing and waging war and seeing it’s effects Mor wants to live in peace, but is this possible? Mor is a chieftain daughter and warrior who has lost the brothers in war and now just wants peace. That peace she is after will be a choice and one that will either have her killed or will bring the peace she so craves. Tur is a warrior consumed with rage and hate for the clan that killed his sister. When Mor and Tur meet 5hey form a connection and are the two who can bring about the peace but first Tur must let go of all the past anger and forgive. Is this possible?

After their island homeland is invaded by a mainland tribe, the four tribes have united to take back their homes. During a particularly bloody battle,Talor Mac Donnel sees his younger sister slain by the invading chief. Driven mad with grief and hell bent on revenge, Talor sets out alone to avenge her death. When his plan fails and he is captured, beaten and left to die,it is Mor, chieftains daughter, who saves him.
Sick of war, Mor, warrior of the Cruthini, seeks a way to end the conflict before more people die . Drawn towards Talor, she frees him in return for his promise not to continue his quest for revenge against her father.
Can two warriors come together to create a lasting peace?

Book three and the final book in The Pict Wars series a well written story with a very good storyline. The story flowed smoothly from page to page, I am sad to see this series end. Talor mac Donnel is a warrior wanting revenge on Mor's father of the clan Dun Ringill for his sister's death , but instead he finds a woman Mor who he could love. “Your feet will bring you to where your heart is … The clans at war are The Serpent,The Eagle, The Wolf, The Stag, and The Boar. I liked the map that accompanied this book. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Reading this series is like going back in time! I re-read the other two books before reading this one, but I have to admit that it is my favorite. Who would have guessed that Talor would fall in love with the daughter of the enemy after being so angry? Or that Mor would sacrifice everything for peace? The books have the mystic beliefs of the Picts intertwined in the stories, as well as the every day life of the people living on the now Isle of Skye. It is just so real! hThis is the 3rd book in the Pict Wars series and what a beauty it is. This is an amazing book by an amazing author, once I started to read I just could't put it down. The characters are so well written as is the chemistry, I just had to keep reading. The story line had so many twists and turns I had to sit back and reflect. I did this before I wrote this review. Please go and read this amazing work. Look forward to reading more.

A very entertaining read where vengeance, betrayal and passion weave a story that sweeps you along to a satisfying conclusion.
Talor and Mor’s journey is extremely enjoyable. This is a story where grief, vengeance, and hope are explored in a way that has you on the edge of your seat. A great read. Castel is a writer who never fails to deliver.

Talor mac Donnel wants revenge and will do anything to get it even sacrifice his own life. Mor is a warrior, yet all she wants now is to lay down her weapons and live in peace. This is a story of Ancient Scotland. War, adventure and romance brings this story to life. I found it a little slow getting into but once I did I really enjoyed the story.I will be sure to read more by this author.

Jayne knocked this story out of the park or... out of the Isle of Skye! What a great adventure on the way to an HEA. Main characters are both strong in their own right, but very human and relatable. Was very happy to see one of the secondary get his just due! Looking forward to more adventures by this author.

Although this book was potentially a little on the long side, I absolutely loved Mor and how dedicated she was to bringing peace to the island. And Talor was swoon-worthy, yum. Revenge, forgiveness, acceptance, tolerance, carpe diem, survival, friendship, sacrifice, family, hope, and love were some of the themes in this wonderful saga.
I received a free copy of Warrior’s Wrath, but that did not affect my review.
Wow! There is so much anger and conflict, both physical and emotional, in this book. The story is so well written that I became immersed in its pages immediately, and there were times I had to put it down just to get my heartbeat back to normal. It is fast paced with quite a few surprises and a lot of close calls. Very well done!

Action-Packed Romance I really enjoyed reading this action-packed historical romance set during the Pict Wars on the Isle of Skye. The plot line of the story is filled with danger as Talor seeks revenge for his sister’s death and is subsequently confronted with Mor’s desire for reconciliation. The ensuing interaction needed to overcome grief will keep you turning the pages to find out if they are successful.
