A few short months ago, blood filled the streets of Fairbridge, North Carolina. Now the city is recovering from the carnage that was the Pride Massacre. Sort of.
Former Combat Rescue Officer Paul Draker is also ready to leave the past behind. The physical and emotional wounds of a career spent in war zones. The guilt over staying in the closet to save his career. The cost of survival. With his friends encouraging him to go easy on himself, he is ready to rebuild his life. This time, on his own terms.
But halfway across the country, a psychopathic sexual predator is released from prison… and he has a score to settle.
And Paul Draker is about to discover that, while he may be done with the past – it may not be done with him.
Peter van der Walt is a fiction author, although you may find some non-fiction and the odd essay out there. Fans can find his newsletter, posts, updates and developments at petervanderwalt.com. Currently, he is hard at work on his next story. When not writing, he has far too many interests to reasonably keep up with. He lives with his partner in Devon, England.
Environment being destroyed - Paul Draker will take on the corporate hotshots. Serial rapist coming for you….
It has been a couple of months since the burning fire swept through Fairbridge and everyone is still in the recovery process. Change is happening though and most of it is unwelcome.
Paul Draker finds corporate employees dumping chemicals on his land and goes after the large entity to in an attempt to stop it from ever happening again.
In the meantime upstate, Alex Keegan’s brother Brad has just been released from prison. He had been convicted of raping and torturing three women. He did not just rape them, he mutilated them. Now that he is out, he has plans - all kinds of plans. Unfortunately just as he is about to walk out the prison doors he is told that Alex has been killed in Fairbridge, North Carolina.
Brad is on his way to Draker’s place of residence where no one is safe.
This is my first novel by Peter van der Walt and he is now on my “must read list” or should I say Draker is (laugh). I thoroughly enjoyed Brimstone and Paul Draker. The chapters switch back and forth between the two main characters of Draker and Brad. We watch Draker oblivious to the danger heading towards his town and getting ready to take on the big corporate structure in defense of the environment. Then we see the peeling back of Brad’s true persona revealing itself on his journey to Fairbridge.
Van der Walt keeps things interesting and moving along. I kept thinking at any time Brad was going to lose his “cool” and nope - van der Walt keeps you guessing. I loved it! I also love Draker’s supporting cast and their dramas. There was not a single thing I did not love about this book. Now I need to go and read book one and sit around waiting like everyone else for the next Draker. This is a series you want on your TBR lists.
Brimstone (Rowdy Parrot Limited, B0819TDFRC, 2019) is the second book in the “Fairbridge” series.
I received an ARC of this book and I am writing a review without prejudice and voluntarily.
Peter van der Walt's debut, Under Fire, blew me away, and to be honest, I was worried that this follow-up might pale in comparison. He certainly set the bar high with that first Fairbridge book. My worries were unfounded because this second book featuring Paul Draker is tension-filled from the beginning, and it doesn't let up. Paul is one of those characters who pulls at the heartstrings almost quietly. He's a bit flawed by his past and the loss of a loved one, plus he's just trying to get on with things after the Pride Massacre. But there's more to this former military man than meets the eye, and a psychopath hellbent on revenge may just bite off more than he can chew. Parts of this story are hard to get through with the graphic nature, but the whole thing comes together for a gripping and gritty addition to Fairbridge books. If you haven't read the first book in the series, I would suggest that you start there before reading Brimstone. It can technically stand on its own, but there are references here and there to the events in the first book. I know I'll be impatiently waiting for whatever comes next for Paul and the little town of Fairbridge.
Paul Draker is the man of my dreams! Strong, capable, good-hearted—but damaged. Readers get to see more of his vulnerabilities with this second installment of the trilogy, which makes the reader yearn for more. A excellent thriller!!
