Hindu Mathematics: What they did not teach you at school, and why

Rate this book
Did you know that the ‘Pythagoras theorem’ was known and used in India centuries before Pythagoras was born? Or that the ‘Arabic number system’, as we know it today, is actually the ‘Hindu number system’? How many are aware that several ideas in modern computer science and linguistics have their origins in the works of ancient Sanskrit masters of more than two millennia ago? Or that the key ideas of calculus were developed in India four centuries before either Newton or Leibniz? What is the connection between Hindu mathematics and Hindu philosophy, and how does mathematics fit into the deeper framework of Hindu philosophy?

These, and other questions, form the subject matter of this book. The book takes the reader through a fascinating tour of the history of Indian mathematics and explores its deep connections with ancient Hindu philosophy. The book highlights the profound contributions of Indian mathematics and the tremendous impact it has had on the development of knowledge in the rest of the world - an impact that remains unfortunately largely unacknowledged and unrecognized in the public consciousness. For example, most people in Europe, even well educated people, continue to believe that "Arabic numbers" originated in Arabia. Understanding the reasons for this surprising lack of awareness is a further aim of the book. It explores the matter from historical, political and religious perspectives to understand the various forces at play that have led to this lack of awareness.
