Christmas 1879 in a Scandinavian settlement in New Zealand
Where is the Julemanden? The only man who fits the role is missing in action. Sergeant Frank Hardy and his brother-in-law Pieter search the seedier areas of Palmerston North, New Zealand to find the man with the white beard who the women have chosen to act the part of the Danish Father Christmas or Santa Claus - for the children of the settlers at their Christmas dinner. But what will happen to the mystery of Christmas if they can't find Lars Christiansen?
No bodies, no fierce warriors, no weapons. Just a charming Christmas story with a twist at the end.
3 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️ English free Ebook Amazon -🦋🦋🦋 Last of the holidays reads this year. Is set in New Zealand years ago. When there where a lot of Denish immigrantes in the land of kiwi’s. Always enjoy a read like this. Just so in between other books. 😀😀😀
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started reading this book, but very quickly found that I was enjoying the simple tale of early European settlers in New Zealand trying to find a way to celebrate Christmas. We get to meet ex soldier Frank Hardy, His Danish wife Mette, and a cast of interesting and well-rounded characters in their small settlement. Even though things are hard for everyone, they all want to celebrate the season. Unfortunately, Lars Christiansen, the man who has volunteered to dress up as the Julemanden (the Yule Man, also known as Father Christmas or Santa Claus) has gone missing, and Frank sets out to find him.
Along the way he talks and trades with many of the people in the area to find gifts for the children and get everything set up for the celebration. Occasionally things feel a bit too descriptive, but the overall story is great fun and a different kind of holiday read.
Sergeant Frank and Mette are part of a group of Danish immigrants in New Zealand during the nineteenth century. Everyone is preparing for the Christmas feast but the man set to play Father Christmas is missing.
This is a very short story. It only takes up about half of the book with the other half being a 3 chapter preview of a novel. I did like the bits of history that were included since they show how much Christmas has changed.
