Paul B Morris is a writer who hails from Walsall in the West Midlands, although he was created somewhere up North.

His stories lean towards dark fiction, horror and the strange, drawing focus from the dark reality of life. His poetry is also predominantly bleak and he apologises for that.

After falling in love with the work of the great Shakespeare, Morris has also drawn inspiration from Lewis Carroll, Stephen King, Graham Masterton and most notably, Michael Marshall Smith, who is still his favourite author.

In the realms of normality, Paul B Morris is happily married to an Angel, has four children who constantly get the better of him and wishes that he had the time to care for a pet bat. He owns two red t-shirts that don’t suit him.

An interesting short story about a damaged man, who does unspeakable things. The author doesn't shy away from gorey descriptions of violence and depravity, which can be uncomfortable to read. However, the motivations are clearly laid out and make internal sense to the character.

To say this book surprised me would be an understatement, to say it impressed me would be entirely truthful.

I’ve read a fair amount of extreme horror and most of it doesn’t impress me at all. I think part of that is the psychological effect of writing “extreme” on the cover of your book. Extreme is one of those words which means a different thing to each person. Now, for me personally, my imagination is much more extreme than that of a lot of my friends. I’ve been known for dark humour for a long time. So when I see extreme, much of the time it’s disappointing.

The nice thing about this book is that nowhere on it does it claim to be extreme, I had no idea of what I was about to wade into, but I very much enjoyed it! Unlike a lot of books these days, Morris has managed to combine dark and twisted and I’m sure in many people’s minds.. extreme, with skilled, adult writing.

The imagery in this book is on point, the characters well thought out and relatable, I think some authors can lose those things – even if they’re very good in other genres – to trying too hard to incorporate the shock factor. Morris, on the other hand, flows through the story throwing all kinds of terrible things at his audience whilst still proving himself a skilled writer.

My first instinct when I’d finished this book was to search for my next Paul B Morris read. I haven’t bought anything just yet but suffice to say I’ve got my eye on it. I would definitely recommend this book to anybody who likes a strong horror theme. If you’ve ever enjoyed a book with “extreme” written on it, you’ll enjoy this.

This is a short, sharp, gloriously dark slap-in-the-face kind of book! If you like your fiction disturbing and edgy, then this is the one for you! Well written, pacy and thrilling, I demolished this in a single afternoon, and yet the imagery still stays with me.

I must be mad! When Paul B. Morris read an excerpt of this at our cosy little book club, Walsall Book Social, his words, and the way he read them, actually made me gag in disgust. Some would say that’s a bad thing, but for a book to cause such an extreme reaction, well, surely that’s the kind of review a horror author wants, right?

It took me just a few hours to read The Technician. It made me gag. Again. It’s a riot from beginning to end. It’s gory, dirty and quite a hard read at times, but in all, this is a well written book that actually makes you sympathise with the main protagonist, Harvey Marlowe, even though he has committed some despicable acts in his time.

I do, however, have a couple of minor criticisms. I would have preferred the text to be force justified rather than left justified. It looks better and makes for a smoother read. There were also a number of typos (spelling and grammatical) scattered throughout, but that’s just me being picky. These issues didn’t really affect my reading of the book.

Despite the amount of gore and violence within, I thoroughly enjoyed The Technician. It’s a strong, well written revenge plot, and for someone who is not a huge fan of this kind of story in general, it’s the perfect length. I don’t think I could have stomached much more of it, and I mean that in the best possible way there is.

I look forward to reading more of Paul’s work. I think.

An action-packed and visceral tale of debauchery and blackmail by a very talented writer. The Technician really packs a punch and doesn’t hold back with its gory and shocking scenes or characters. The characters are believable, and you can easily get into their psyche and motivations for their actions. I certainly wouldn’t want to get on the wrong side of The Technician! A well-written and interesting story.
