Rolling hills, cornfields and a slower pace of living serve as the perfect backdrop for writing small town, second chance romances. My stories are based in small towns but I hope you see a bit of yourselves in them, wherever you may be.
I write mostly characters in their late thirties and early- to mid-forties because I feel like that’s when things get really, really tricky. I love writing this demographic because by our thirties and forties, we’ve most likely seen some major turmoil and our affections are harder won. We’ve seen new love and maybe watched it crumble. Maybe we’ve had earth-shattering loss and our hearts have hardened a little. We’re tougher to crack, but the payoff is that much sweeter. We have had careers, lovers, maybe children, and now, just when we think we have it all figured out, something throws a monkey wrench in the works and we’ve got to rise to the top, again.

This was my first book by Hillary DeVisser. I could still follow the plot even that I didn’t read the first 2 novels. She writes in an all knowing perspective and that enables great character development. The characters are real and relatable and I felt the emotions of the characters through the entire story. I started the book 1 hour before my bedtime. That was a big mistake I had trouble putting the book down and go to sleep. And when I woke up I kept reading it until I finished it. I loved it. I’m glad it’s a series and I will going to read book 1 and 2 soon. I even hope for another book in the series whom’s I won’t say because I don’t want to give anything about this story away.

Loved this book!!! It was my favorite in the Coal Creek Series so far. The book was very hard to put down once I started reading it. Each chapter was very exciting and kept you guessing what was going to happen next. I highly recommend the whole series if you have not read it yet.

I really enjoyed Poets Pass, I wasn't aware that it was the third book in a series, but that did not affect my reading experience since it read as a standalone. I'm excited to read the previous two books and see what they are all about. This novel was so much more than just a romance, it had drama. action, and suspense there was some chapters that had me at the edge of my seat, I could not put it down! The author kept me intrigued with all the twists and turns.
Avery had a rough start at life, her mother cared more about pleasing men than taking her of her; when she turned fifteen she decided to run away and live with her grandmother. The things Avery went through have made her put walls up and mostly keep to herself. She doesn't trust men, she prefers to have flings with no emotions involved. I really liked Avery, she was a very strong, independent woman that held up her on, but the author also made sure to show her flaws and fears in the raw moments, that made her relatable! Avery's character growth is slow, but done very well she goes from not feeling comfortable around anyone to being able to share her past with her new friends.
Officer Jake just went through a messy divorce, he has left Chicago. his crazy ex-wife, and moved back to his hometown. Jake was such a hunk, I really liked reading how he slowly put his walls down and allowed himself to show his emotions! The relationship he has with his mom, sister and family is admirable; I love families that get along, without the drama. I really liked how he was protective, but knew when to back off and let Avery take care of herself.
I really hope there is another book in this series, I really want to read more about a certain pair. one thing that kept me from giving it five stars was that there were so many characters at times that when they were brought up again, I could not remember who was who. Other than that the novel was very enjoyable and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a romance!

Oh my goodness, I'm glad that I didn't have anything I had to get done because once I started reading I could NOT put this book down! I love how the author paints the picture of the setting because I had the exact place this story (and the others in the series) in my mind's eye while it was taking place. I followed it through the small town and out to the country, past the corn fields to the "mountain". I see the sunsets and small fishing pond (from novel #1 that had another appearance here) along with the moments you only truly understand if you grew up in a small mid-west town.
Hillary's books keep getting better and better with twists, turns, ups and downs that are all tied together neatly in the end. I love that there are surprises and moments where I am thinking...what the heck? How is that going to turn out! All of the books can stand alone but since characters from other stories make an appearance, it is best to read them in order if you don't want "plot spoilers".
If you like a to read romance, mystery and comedy, give this series a read! BUT that comes with a warning, once you start the books, you won't want to put them down! I found myself nervous, excited, crying, laughing and holding my breath throughout this whole book. Give it a read and then recommend it to your friends! How long until book #4?! (no doubt it is too long for this Coal Country fan!)

Just finished reading Poets Pass and like all the others it did not disappoint! The best part I love about this series is that you could read any one of them and not have to have read the others to know what is going on. Each book stands out on its own which is something I love. I highly recommend this book and this series!

Couldn’t put it down!! Hillary brings the characters to life and they become your friends! I could see myself hanging out with them! I love when a book does that and Poets Pass definitely does not disappoint!!!

this was my first book by this author, and i will say it definitly won't be the last. Hillary didn't only give you one story in this book, but a couple. yes there was the main story of Jake and Avery, but there was also the story of Jake's mom Ruthie finding love again. i love that there was many different layers to the story that each of the characters added, that there wasn't a part that hold my attention. i enjoyed the story of the main characters coming together. one deciding to give love another chance after being destroyed the last time around, and the other one finally allowing herself to fall in love.

The characters come alive as different family members join the story line. I appreciate that each person has their unique personality which remains consist throughout the series. I look forward to the next book!

Excellent book! Officer Jake Marcovic and Dr Avery O'Gara are very strong characters. Jake recently divorced and wanted to get back to his family and roots. He is a tall handsome man with a bit of a flirty personality, but only for flings, nothing long lasting for him, he learned his lesson.
Avery is the local psychiatrist. She is devoted to her job and patients and loves her private solitude life she has out in the country. Avery is extremely independent and self sufficient, she learned a lesson at a very young age not to trust men, to have the occupational fling but absolutley no strings attached.
The attraction to each other goes without saying even if it is fought tooth and nail. This story has a bit of fun, drama, desire and friendly people that would love to assist in the love connection.
Congratulations, Hillary DeVisser on a superb book! Well, written, and come to life characters. Loved it!!

I love the Coal Country Series books by a local author and Southern Illinois as the setting! The characters come to life and you can picture yourself sitting around their tables listening to stories. Book 3 added some suspense and mystery. Can't wait to see if the Coal Country Series continues!

This is the first book I have read by Hillary DeVisser and I know that it will not be the last. I loved this story! Avery and Jake are a great couple. Jake is a police officer who just moved back to the small town he grew up in after a terrible divorce. Avery is a therapist in the small town who enjoys the peace and quiet. That all changes. She now has a large family move in next door. They take the loner Avery in and in their group she meets Jake. I could not put this book down until I was done. It is so good. I need to read the rest of the Coal County Series!

Another wonderful addition to the Coal Series! Jake and Avery have an undeniable connection. This one kept me on my toes and the ending is one you won’t see coming! This is a can’t miss!
