As a pro-fisherman, Benson Howell’s days are spent on murky lake water, reeling in largemouth bass and winning first place trophies. At twenty-nine, life is easy and carefree. His only job is to stay in the top rankings during the fishing circuit, and keep the sponsors happy. That is, until he meets hot tempered, fiery haired Danni-Rose in small-town Alabama. He has never backed down from anything too big to reel in.

Danni-Rose has spent the past six years of her life burying her past. When Benson Howell literally plows his boat right into her life, armed with simmering anger, she fights the current pulling her closer to him. With a past she can’t let go of, and the sexy fisherman breaking down all her walls, Danni-Rose does everything she can to break the line connecting her to Benson.

Will Danni-Rose be able to let go of the past? Can Benson change her mind about him? Or will they both miss the catch of a lifetime?

I received an copy via author in exchange for an honest review.

"You make me braver, you challenge me, and you force me to face the things I'm afraid of. You push back when I push everyone away. You didn't let me get away with it."

This made me emotional in a good way! This was my first book by Allison Mullinax and I can't wait to see what she comes out with next. I couldn't put this down once I started reading. The southern bits weren't overdone and thank goodness for that!

This book is about healing and letting people in. It's about opening up yourself up and learning to move on after something terrible happens. I'm not going to go too much into the plot because I don't want to spoil anything for ya'll.

Now I really wasn't a fan of Danni Rose at the beginning. It was a bit too much attitude. I understood her and empathized with her, but I did get frustrated with her from time to time. Benson had my heart from day one and was a damn sweetheart. Anybody that could put up with Danni Rose deserved a medal! He was patient and never not pursued her. Whatever she threw at him he caught it and never stopped being by her side when she needed him.

I loved the connection between these two so much. It was beautiful to see Danni Rose open up and let Benson into her heart. She was a fighter and so strong. She learned to move on and allow herself to be happy.

Overall this is a good first book! I enjoyed the writing and can't believe how emotional I became. If you are a fan of contemporary romance, then pick this one up.

A standalone contemporary romance revolving around the guilt-ridden Danni-Rose Walker and professional fisherman Benson Howell.

This ARC was sent to me by Fiery Seas Publishing, LLC, via Instafreebie, for an honest review.

My Take
Using a dual first-person point-of-view in the present tense from Danni-Rose’s and Benson’s perspectives, Mullinax has written a sweet, tearful short story in which she does a good job teasing us along about the past tragedy Danni-Rose endured. It's a great lead-in to the underlying message of the story: boating safety. Mullinax did a great job of weaving this in and pointing out how celebrities can promote positive action in their fields.

The only problem is that “Break the Line” would be better if Mullinax had expanded on it. No, the story is good and complete, but what it lacks is the show, the grabbing at my emotions and pulling me in. Oh, yeah, I do mean that “tearful” bit above, but the story could have been a real sob story.

“Break the Line” needed to develop the love story and not simply tell us their emotions. I still don’t know what caused Benson to fall so hard that he was willing to endure all of Danni-Rose’s cruelties. And why would she fall for him?

That bit from Liza about Danni needing to try? All along it’s been about betrayal , so where did that try come from? As for the gunman being in prison, when Benson was only shot five days ago…pretty fast work for their legal system. I gotta admit this kind of speed is consistent with how the love story went.

That whining over, I did love how Mullinax incorporated Benson’s love of fishing, the metaphors used, and her analogies that really pulled Benson into the story.
”Again, I find myself looking for the balance of giving her just enough room to swim at her own pace, but still keeping the line tight enough so she doesn’t plummet…”
Now, how can you not love a guy with this much empathy?? Danni. Well, Danni is empathetic as well, but she’s also annoying in all her attempts to dodge life. I’d’ve thrown her back what with all her trying to push Benson away.

All in all, a good story…that has lots more potential.

The Story
The championship is on the line for Benson Howell. If he doesn’t make that weigh-in in time, he’ll lose it all. And then it happens.

He’s dang lucky that his rescuer has a heart, or she would have left him to flounder. It’s the complexity of this woman that grabs Benson’s interest. He could no more stop trying to lure in Danni-Rose than he could give up fishing.

The Characters
Danni-Rose Walker is the state park naturalist, working in the same office as her daddy. Beau is her cream Lab. Daddy, Paul Walker, is the game warden at the state park. Mama is Penny of Penny’s Pies & Pastries (she’s been the town baker for 30 years). Aunt Becky.

Benson Howell is a professional fisherman loaded with endorsements, having the time of his life. Jessie Stanton is his manager. Pop is Benson’s grandfather who gave him his love for fishing.

Dr. Liza James is the town veterinarian and Danni-Rose’s best friend, practically a sister. L.J. is her twin. Jackson is their younger brother. Thomas had been and still wants to be Danni-Rose’s friend.

Gabby Wilson, from high school, has a German shepherd, Bella, and is getting married to Boyd Henderson. Mrs. Hall owns a lot of poodles. Rickey is the lead singer of the band. Mrs Smith is Danni-Rose’s disapproving neighbor. Dr Martin was the shrink. Mrs Watley works at the disability center. Uncle Larry is teaching her son to fish. Randy is Benson’s competition.

The Cover and Title
The cover’s background is a peaceful lake surrounded by trees into which is merged Benson and Danni-Rose with reeds in front of them at the bottom of the cover. Benson’s T-shirt-clad chest faces us while he’s looking to the right into Danni-Rose’s upturned face, her long red hair curling down her back, wearing a deep fuchsia tank top. The author’s name is in white at the bottom while the lake-blue title combines a serif font for the first two words and a line of a font for the last word — quite appropriate *grin*

The title finds Danni-Rose attempting to “Break the Line” between them.

Benson is a pro-fisherman with plenty of success. He has many sponsors, makes good money and leads a carefree life. He's about to win another big sum of money in Alabama, when he gets in trouble with his boat. That's when he meets Danni-Rose, a local woman, who helps him, but lets him know how dangerous speeding on the water without keeping an eye on the surroundings can be. Benson falls head over heels for Danni-Rose, but she has a complicated past and grief makes it impossible for her to fully live her life. Does Benson have a chance?

Danni-Rose is sad and she can't seem to move on. When she meets Benson something changes within her. She likes him, but this gives her mixed feelings and messes her up inside and she isn't sure she's ready. Benson stands for everything she despises. His profession is part of the problem. Can she look past that when she gets to know him better? Will Danni-Rose be ready for a little bit of happiness after years of being sad?

Break the Line is a beautiful emotional story. Danni-Rose has been through a lot and even though she's a fierce woman she's also vulnerable and not ready to fully live again. She lost so much and this moved me to tears. Benson is a kindhearted man. He will do anything for Danni-Rose and his gentleness and compassion are making him a wonderful match for her. I loved how Danni-Rose and Benson are both passionate about nature. They each like to spend time outside and that is something that forms a connection between them. I kept hoping they would have a future together.

Allison Mullinax has written an original romantic story. I liked the emphatic way she approaches her characters and their problems. Break the Line has plenty of emotional layers and there's a great serious message she's giving her readers as well. I loved the combination of that with a gorgeous complex love story. Break the Line is surprisingly gripping and I loved the many unexpected twists and turns, it's an amazing book.

A special thank you goes out to Fiery Seas Publishing for giving me an eARC of this book to. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Never in my wildest imagination would I enjoy a book about fishing. FISHING! Honesty time: I really don’t like fishing. I think it’s incredibly boring and I’m not a huge fan of the outdoors. Granted, I am allergic to the outdoors. But I digress.

The characters, Danni-Rose (amazing name!) and Benson, is what sold it for me. Benson is amazing! He put up with Danni and her attitude (albeit completely warranted, given her past). He was patient and kind. He never let fame get to his head and actually used it for good. He was just an all around amazing guy.

Danni-Rose was one of those classic tragic heroines. But I found I didn’t mind it so much. She actually communicated with Benson and her family She relied on her bff, Liza, and her family to get her through the rough times. By the way, Liza and Danni? Total friend goals! But I really just loved Danni’s strength and my heart just bled for her.

One of the big things in here that I absolutely loved was consent. Many times, Benson asked Danni if what he was doing was okay, even she had just consented a couple minutes ago. I don’t see that a lot in novels like this and we need to see more of it.

Overall, this was a great novel. I had to knock half a star because I am not a huge fan of insta love, which this novel did have. But everything else surrounding it made the novel just so amazing. I can’t wait to see what else this author does.

***4 Stars***

There was something about the description of this book that hooked me (I know, I know just work with me). I’m not sure if it was just the flow of the words, or what, but my curiosity was peaked and I really wanted to find out about Benson and Danni-Rose and I have to say I’m happy I took the bait *BSEG*. Break the Line was a quick read was filled with some really great moments and lots of heart.

Danni-Rose is a force of nature and she and I had an interesting time of it. She loves hard and fierce, has a lot of moxie and can be an immovable wall when she wants to be and I loved that about her, but it was that wall that had me getting frustrated with her. I understood it, I empathized with her ~ hell I even got teary over it ~ but it was definitely a thing that she needed to come to terms with in order to truly live.

Benson was such a good guy. I really, really liked him. He truly enjoyed his life because he got to do something he was not only good at, but loved as his profession. He was sweet, flirty and though confident and at times cocky, he wasn’t a jerk and proved time and again what a good heart he had.

Benson and Danni-Rose relationship does progress quickly, but I was okay with it. They had something of a time limit as to how long Benson would be in town and they packed in a lot in that time limit. But the chemistry between them was there and I really liked them together ~ at least when Danni would let herself simply be in the moment with Benson. For such a short time frame there was a lot of emotional upheaval going on, they skimmed over the small, superficial things and pretty much went down the emotional rabbit hole in no time flat and that’s why everything worked for me. Of course, there were a few twists thrown in that I did not see coming, but they worked and I liked where everything was in the end.

This was my first book by the author and I really enjoyed it. The writing was engaging, pacing was good and I enjoyed the dual 1st person POV. And as you all know I’m a sucker for well written secondary characters and this book is chalk full of them. From Beau to Liza and even Jess, I really liked them all and wouldn’t have minded spending a lot more time with them. If you’re looking for a quick read that will have you grinning and probably reaching for a tissue or two, then I’d definitely recommend giving this one a go!

I really enjoyed this book, I just wished it was a little longer! There was plenty of room for further character development for both MC's. This impacted my overall rating, but a great little read to say the least!

Break the Line is the first romance novel I've read, and damn, it doesn't disappoint. I now consider the romance genre another one of my favorites. From the start, You'll be plunged into the waters of a small Alabama town, and with the tension between main characters, Benson and Danni-Rose, you'll never want to leave. Though only Allison Mullinax's debut, she expertly created a romance you will be fighting for from the first few pages. I can't wait to read her future releases. Whether you want a powerful love story, or a quick Valentine's Day read, I'd highly recommend Break The Line.

After reading a lot of angsty teenage romance lately, this was a welcome change. I don't often read contemporary romance, but I really enjoyed this book.

The first point-of-view character, Danni-Rose was an interesting one. She has a defensive front that Benson (the second point-of-view character) tries to break down. She's unwilling to let go of the past, and Benson helps her to realise that she cannot live in the past forever. She has to move on and allow herself to be happy.

Speaking of Benson, he's an absolute sweetheart, the guy a lot of women would want in their lives. He's hilarious at times, and I loved all the fisherman metaphors he used when describing Danni and his relationship with her. Both characters felt real to me, the way they thought and acted, it made me believe they could be real people.

The dialogue in this book is witty and funny, as well as heartfelt. I was angry and upset and happy along with the characters, reacting with them. This story invokes a lot of emotions.

The plot overall was good too. It was well paced, as I never felt like putting the book down unless I had to. There were a few surprising plot twists that I didn't see coming, keeping me on the edge of my seat, encouraging me to read on.

There's only one negative I can say about this book, and that's the writing style itself. It was good and descriptive but it felt very...telly - if you're a writer like I am, you'll know what I mean. It felt like the author was telling me a lot of things rather than showing me. I wanted to be more immersed in the story. I wanted to know what things smelt like, felt like, tasted like etc. I think if the senses were engaged more more, I would have awarded this story 4.5 stars rather than 4.

Overall, a fun read. If you're a lover of contemporary romance, give this one ago :)

There is so much I want to say about this book!!!! I absolutely loved it! If my schedule would have allowed me to read this book in one sitting- I would have! I was actually annoyed that I had things to do.

This is the first book by Allison Mullinax, and you don’t want to miss it. The story is fun, sweet, tear-inducing, and romantic.

I loved Danni-Rose. She was so much fun to read. Her sarcasm and wit made me laugh constantly. I speak fluent sarcasm so it was fun to read a character that had a personality so similar to my own. However, I think Liza might have my favorite character her and Jess’ banter was so funny. Liza was just as much to read as Danni-Rose.
And oh God- Benson! He is the type of guy every woman wants. I guarantee Benson will be your next book-boyfriend. There is no possible way he could not be. He was just perfect. He was strong, understanding, and went toe to toe against Danni’s sarcasm....“Well, not everyone judges a book by its fishing-boat cover”... I think that’s my favorite line in the book.

Danni-Rose is closed off and tightly wound. She does not want to get close to anyone or let her past rest. Benson comes along and sees something in Danni-Rose and he is instantly determined to force his way in. He slowly beats down her defenses with witty and funny banter (the one lines in the story are just amazing! Point made in above paragraph). The passion and spark between Danni and Benson is almost immediate and powerful.

This story is so emotional on so many different levels; Danni-Rose’s past, her dog Beau, and so many more scenes that I can’t talk about without ruining the story. Ahh!

I hardly ever get choked up while reading, but this story made me tear up at least four separate times. Mullinax’s writing is fun, sweet, and will pull you in without you even realizing it. She writes characters that you will just fall in love with. My only complaint about this book is that it was not longer. I did not want the story to end!

Make sure to pick up a copy of this book on February 13! I know you’ll enjoy it and it’s the perfect Valentine’s day present to yourself. This is a sweet and enjoyable romance that you will not want to miss!

Head's up, Romance fans! This is a quick read, but you might want a box of tissues to get through it.

Allison Mullinax's debut romance novel Break the Line rocks. While this is a novella, and not quite long enough to qualify as a full novel (the paperback comes in at about 150 pages), it's a brisk read that will keep you clinging to the pages (or your tablet) to keep turning pages. Her pacing and attention to detail could use a little polish, but the plot itself is well-turned.

The story of Benson and Danni-Rose is full of emotional tension (and a little sexual tension!), and the conflicts between them are easy to spot (but not easy to overcome).

Without revealing spoilers, I'm going to give readers this heads up: I found myself sobbing (not just weepy, trickly tears, but full on gasping-for-air bawling my eyes out) near the end of the book. I won't say that everyone will have this reaction - the heroine's emotional conflict, the reason for her inner conflict over falling for Benson, is a situation I have personally seen - a life cut short in the blink of an eye due to someone's careless "fun".

Ms. Mullinax hits hard and hits home with Break the Line. If you're looking for a quick, read that grabs you by the heart and won't let go until you hit the last line, check out Break the Line.

**Note: I believe Allison has another romance due to be released later this year. I'm looking forward to it with eager anticipation. She's definitely on my "New Writers to Watch" list.

Break The Line

**receive an ARC in exchange for an honest review**

5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Allison Mullinax tells an amazing story in her book Break The Line that will keep you entranced from the first page to the last. Each time I thought I knew what was going to happen she added a new layer that continue to build the story and helped you understand the main characters. She brings together two people who didn’t know they were looking for the other. One needs to finally come to terms with the past and live for the future, while the other will find out that what they took for granted can be taken away in a second. Together they will find strength in one another to change.

Benson is at the top in the fishing world and knows that nothing can stop him. But when he has a mishap with his boat during a competition and meets a fiery red head he will soon learn that their is more at stake than a trophy.

Danni can’t stand reckless fisherman and Benson is no exception. But she can’t get him out of her head and when he continues to pop up all over town she finally gives in and lets him in. But she isn’t ready for the emotions he will stir up and what she isn’t ready to lose.

Benson can’t ignore the pull towards Danni and knows he needs to show her that he is all in, but is she? Can they get over the past to have a future? Or will the pull of the past and Dani’s insecurities be too much to overcome?

Three point five stars.

Break The Line is a quick light read romance set in a small Alabama town.

Benson is a pro-fisherman, but when his boat hits a submerged log, while travelling too fast, he’s thrown overboard. He’s rescued by a very angry redhead. But, when he goes to thank her, her anger seems to be much deeper than could be caused by his one error.

Danni-Rose is a park naturalist who is used to the annual fishing competitions, but she doesn’t have to like the men who compete. She sees Benson Howell as just another arrogant fisherman who only cares about winning. But Benson keeps appearing in her life, and her family and friends are encouraging him to be her friend.

For six years Danni has put up imaginary walls and been consumed by guilt after a tragic boating accident. Pushing Benson away is her only choice, or is it? How much longer can she keep going like this?

I loved Benson. He’s an absolute sweetheart! He’s sweet, kind, and the man has a patience of a saint to put up with Danni Rose half the time. But that only made him ever more book-boyfriend material! So he’s mine ladies, back off! Danni Rose was a strong character, but sometimes her stubbornness and attitude were a bit much and she seemed like brat. I understood her backstory, but she needed to bring it down a notch. Thankfully Benson could handle anything she seem to dish out and he was always at her side. Together they’re a great couple. His soft cushions her hard and with Benson’s acceptance Danni Rose is able to open up and love.

Overall this was such a great contemporary romance. I found myself getting lost in this story and didn’t come up for air until it was over! Allison Mullinax injects just the right amount of sweet without being too sappy. I really enjoyed it, have claimed Benson as mine, and found a another author to follow! 4.5 stars.

Ahhhh this lovely, beautiful book. Allison Mullinax is a great author and this story was so much more complex and engaging then I anticipated! Well worth reading.

The story is about a professional fisherman Benson meeting Danni-rose. Danni-Rose with issues bigger than the fish Benson reels in. Benson doesn't want to back down from the challenge and purses Danni-Rose and the story begins. This is a beautiful contemporary romance novel that is a quick and interesting read.

Only slight negatives would be in parts the novel is overly descriptive and this draws out the story a little to unnecessarily and some grammatical errors that were easy to overlook.

Really great book otherwise would strongly recommend to everyone.

4/5

Break the Line is a quick and emotional read with themes of water-safety and learning to moving forward after heartbreak. I loved both Danni and Benson and the whole Southern charm of the story. Danni-Rose's parents were awesome. The story was gripping and full of twists and turns that I didn't see coming. If you're looking for a sweet and charming Southern Romance that tugs at your heartstrings and imparts an important message about love and life then look no further. I read this book when it was in the final stages of beta reading. I'd have to say my interest was peaked from the very beginning, it's not every day that you see a book about a professional angler. I absolutely loved the story (it'd be hard not to), and for me it was hard to put down. The writing style was exactly what I like, the characters were unique and the story really jumps out at you. I swear I could hear the southern drawl in their voices, it's not very often one can say that. I even had a favorite line, "I already had myself a hard time." That's right a favorite line from a beta read. That's how good this is. Kudos to the author for a story well written, I plan to read her again and again.

I had the opportunity to read Break The Line. I loved the unique twist of having it in the fishing world! Something different in a romance novel. And it works! I was "hooked" from the start! You will love the vivid painting of the South the author portrays. The romance will have you rooting for Benson and Danni-Rose from the first time they meet! If youre looking for a sweet romance and quick read(you wont be able to put it down!)...this is the book for you! Allison Mullinax delievers a wonderful debut novel. I look forward to many more books from her!

The Sweetest Romance

I started reading this book and couldn't stop. The chemistry between Danni-Rose and Benson is off the charts! Allison Mullinax has written a romance that sucked me in from the beginning and refused to let go. The writing flows so beautifully and the characters are great together. I loved the amount of support Benson showed for Danni and I loved the development of Danni. There was SO MUCH I wasn't expecting to happen in this!

I’ve read hundreds of contemporary romance novels, but this was the first one I read about a fisherman. Within a few pages, this fisherman had me hooked and left me wanting more protagonists like Benson Howell. I love that he is not your average protagonist and how he works his way into Danni-Rose’s life. Author Allison Mullinax writes a beautiful yet unexpected love story. It’s full of layers and twists which had me not only rooting for Benson and Danni-Rose, but also for her other characters. Break the Line is a well-written novel that addresses the messiness of life in a genuine and heartfelt way. I would highly recommend this book and I look forward to reading Allison’s next novel.

Soooooooo good! Just so good! I was so emotionally invested with these two characters... I couldn’t stop tearing through the pages. I ran into a wall reading because I couldn’t put it down! An emotional roller-coaster that will take you up, down, and around and around. Honestly, this book is wonderful and this is an author I’ll be snatching up anytime a new book comes out.

Break the Line is my first venture into the stylings of Allison Mullinax and, honestly, I think I'm a fan.

What a great story! You know, you pick a a romance and kinda get the gist of what the story is about because...it's a romance...but somehow Break the Line is different.  Yes, it is a romance but it is written with great care which made it easy to read.  By saying that I mean that the story within the story was so human that I couldn't put the book down.  The characters were well thought out.  The story has a great conversational flow which makes it easy to visualise the people and settings.  I was actually reading the spoken bits with a southern drawl in my mind.  I know...I'm strange but it's true.

This book was a short and full of intensity between the two main characters. The author has given its readers full of ups and downs of a story with its constant twists and turns that has made the story even more interesting and captivating.

I like the fact that both Danni-Rose and Benson has things in common like how passionate they are with nature. They like to spend as much time together out in the fresh air, breeze and especially in each other's company.

This book didn't disappoint me and it turned out to be a great read despite the fact that I had low expectations toward it. I recommend you this book if you're in the mood for romance.

Where do I start?! Break the Line is the PERFECT romantic pick-me-up! Danni Rose and Benson's love story is sweet, sensual, and sprinkled with the right amount of anticipation. It's well written, easy to get hooked on, and overall, it's a fabulous romance book that delivers.

I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a new and upcoming author. I certainly can't wait to read more of Allison Mullinax's novels!

Y'all, I always worry about reading a book when I know the author. But knowing the town the setting was based off of, spending summers there as a kid, I just had to.

I'm so glad I did. Break The Line is a wonderful weekend read, especially at the lake, that surprised me, made me cry, and made my heart happy.

This book is definitely a page turner! You'll fall in love with the main characters and you'll be immersed in their struggles! For me to get emotionally involved in a plot is kind of a big deal - for me most books are rather predictable, but this one definitely has you on the edge of your seat until the end and the author does a great job connecting the reader to the characters. Allison is a new favorite author for me!

I really enjoyed this book from the male perspective. I'd really like to see your take on a single mother of two who remarries and her new husband raises her two daughters as his own. That would be a really good story. Your experience with this situation would provide a good insight into the world of single mothers. If you left out the cheating wife part it would make a great story for the wife and kids.
