I'm a mom of four, Air Force wife, and author of adult and young adult dystopian, post-apocalyptic, and science fiction. I love intense world building and character driven stories that feature strong female leads - as well as a side of romance - and any end of the world scenario. Zombies, aliens, a distant future where people have no clue how the world ended in the first place, you name it, I will create a story there!
Having lived in a lot of different places after more than a decade as an Air Force wife, I love setting my books in cities I've actually lived in to give them authenticity. I've resided in: Indiana, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, California, and Oklahoma but am currently back in my home state of Ohio where I live with my husband, four kids, two dogs, and three cats.
When I'm not writing, you can find me by my pool (in the summer), getting lost in some binge-worthy show or at a play with my husband, patronizing one of the great restaurants in my small town of Troy, Ohio with my family, or traveling. I want to see everything and make a point of visiting a new place every year!
Some of my favorite books are The Hunger Games, Pride and Prejudice, The Host, and The Stand. My favorite movies are Aliens, Jaws, Signs, Say Anything, Everything Everywhere All At Once, and The Greatest Showman.

Not sure what to rate this, this author has been recommended time and time again, so thought why not give it a shot, and it was just meh for me, there was nothing new here, a lead female who I’m very surprised didn’t die from her stupidity from the get go, I didn’t feel that survival rush, that fear, I felt nothing, I’m unsure if I’ll carry on with this series due to the fact that it didn’t wow me. I’ll try her other series though that has an older female character.
Rowan has way too many too-stupid-to-live moments especially the ending. How she handles her mom and dad's situation is so ridiculous. Is she 13? I'm so frustrated about how stupid she is, that I may not read the rest of the series.
Back to the beginning. A new series in the Broken World. Rowan is a college student in Phoenix when the virus strikes. Her parents are in Ohio. She meets Kiaya (rhymes with TIE-ah) a fellow student in her dorm looking to get back to Indiana. Following the approved route (RT 66), they start their trip with another student, Kyle, who falls sick forcing them to stop in Vega, Texas.
I love this motley cast of characters that develops naturally in this book. Learning from each other, they may have a chance to survive.
You can read this WITHOUT having read any of Kate L. Mary's Broken World series. However, there are wonderful cameos from characters we grew to love in Broken World, so be prepared for that warm, fuzzy feeling of being Home.
Really enjoyed this. I appreciate how this authors zombie universe starts with a deadly virus and eventually leads to zombies. You’re finding out the zombies exist right along with the characters. I can’t wait to read more of this story and I was extremely pleased to have some broken world characters thrown into this book. So pleased I just started a reread of Broken World!
When I read about the zombie apoc, what I love most is the newness of the virus. The way everyone reacts to the beginning of the end. It thrills me to see regular people learning to live in a new world they are being introduced to. They simply will thrive or die. And it is an emotional journey for the reader as we delve deeper into the unknown with these characters we have quickly fallen in love with. Kate L. Mary did all this and more with this story. FAR FROM HOME shook me. Days (no lie!!) later and I still wish I was reading this book.
FAR FROM HOME gave me all the feels. Mary did such an excellent job crafting this story that I actually felt a part of this world. It gives me goosebumps how real it felt when reading. But then there was the sadness of when I looked up and realized it wasn’t actually taking place. I know. And to think I will most likely be the person to die and not thrive. For real. As much as this family recycles colds and snot, we will turn instantly.
There is a couple cameos with her other series and what little I know about them brought a smile to my face. I really need to catch up on Mary’s Broken World series. Finding time is my downfall.
FAR FROM HOME had an amazing unfolding of the story, fantastic world building and hints of romance. All this paired with the sick becoming zombies? Yeah, to me this all equals the perfect book. If only it didn’t end. Cannot wait tor the next one. 5 Stars!
Yet another winner by my favorite Zombie author. The Far series has some new and amazing characters, but we also get a visit from a few characters from her other zombie series Broken World. Our story starts at the beginning....when the virus first hits. It's great to see how the virus affects a different set of people. The main female character is Rowan, a collage student from Ohio, attending a school in Arizona. Desperate to get home to her family she sees another student needs a ride east too. Kiaya is a very secretive quiet girl from Indiana. Under Martial Law the girls are restricted to driving the historic Route 66 (I really loved this idea for the book). Along the way they team up with Devon, a cop, which will be handy later.
I loved how these characters developed through out the book. Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse is no east feet and this group is off to a roaring start. This author does a great job of keeping the readers attention throughout the book, which made it an exciting journey I felt like I took along with our characters. Kudos to Kate L. Mary for making this reader a lover of zombie books! Can't wait for the next book in this thrilling new series!!
This was good book to start new series and I can't wait to see where it will take us. And it was so good to see some old friends from The Broken World series and I was just smiling whole time. I really liked Rowan and Kiaya. They both were strong their own way. Also I liked Devon and some other characters were interesting. Can't wait for next book.
Kate L. Mary is baaack with another zombie series. Yes! I loved her Broken World series, and am thrilled she's going back to the beginning - my favorite part! While it's always interesting to see how things turn out 20 years later, there's nothing like the adrenaline rush and chaos of an original outbreak.
However, there were a few editing errors and inconsistencies in the storyline, i.e. manner of dress suddenly changing, random items appearing as a blockade and then not being there, etc... The characters lack of smarts in supplying themselves in a pretty much empty town - even going so far as to NOT avail themselves of stocked canned goods the diner they cooked and ate at would have had. If not for these inconsistencies I would have rated it 5 stars. But the storyline is so enjoyable, even with them, that I can do a solid 4.
I enjoyed briefly revisiting a couple of characters from Broken World while getting to meet our new friends Rowan, Kiaya, and Devon.
Rowan and Kiaya are students at Phoenix University, in Arizona, who are making their way home to their families when they get stuck in the small town of Vega, Texas when their travel buddy becomes ill. They later meet up with Devon - who is a cop, and who is also making his way home.
It's a fun, fast ride through the zombie apocalypse, and I already can't wait for the next book in the series.
I will admit that zombies are not my favorite flavor of this genre, so I was a bit disappointed when this turned into a zombie story. I found the horrors of a pandemic to be interesting enough. A lot of the book was spent on Rowan's issues. She was persistently irritated at the idea that others (particularly Devon) might find her less capable because she was female. In fact, she brought very little in the way of defensive skills to the group so no need to be snippy. Devon's assessment that she was so used to always getting her way that she would not listen to anyone else was spot on. While the group questioned Hank's bite injury and Miller's identity, they did not really pursue either of those questions. Seems like info from both of those topics might have been important. I also wasn't sure why they needed another car after finding Zara (who really should have locked the door after everyone died and turned). They had two cars so why a third? I am mildly curious as to what happens so I may read the next.
"We figure out a way to survive in this world. It's all we can do."
Rowan is a typical 20 year old college student at the University of Phoenix. She has lived a sheltered life, never wanting for anything, protected by her doting parents. When a deadly virus attacks, Rowan's mother tells her to stay in Phoenix, far away from the worst of the outbreak in NYC. However, Rowan is determined to make her way cross country to her parents in Ohio.
Since she can't imagine making the trip by herself, she searches for others wanting to go East. Soon, she is joined by a bookish, quiet girl named Kiaya and a boy named Kyle. As the trio starts their journey, they soon learn that the virus isn't just attacking people "back East", but has arrived much closer to them. A bathroom stop exposes them to the virus and they soon find themselves stuck in a motel room with one of them dying from the virus.
They meet up with a cop named Devon who is also stranded in the small town of Vega, Texas and decide that the best option is to join forces and travel together. "Traveling across a zombie-infested country is the dumbest thing I've ever heard." They soon find out that not only is there a virus that is killing 85% of the population, but those who die from the virus don't stay dead. "The world has turned into a horror movie."
"Amarillo. Shit. This could be bad." I found this quote to be especially funny since I lived in Amarillo for two years. The author does a good job in describing the journey along Route 66 and you could almost see the things she mentioned along the Route. The group is saved in Amarillo by a boy named Hank who thought he was all alone in the world.
They soon arrive in Shamrock and meet up with another group of survivors, including a (supposed) Army Corporal, a nurse, a slightly mentally handicapped man and his young niece and nephew. After several close calls with zombies, the group again hits the road toward Ohio. "At this point, I'm going to assume anything is possible."
At first, Rowan thinks that Devon is an arrogant ass, but soon finds herself attracted to him. "The idea of a post-apocalyptic romance seemed absurd." But, who knows what might happen when the world as you know it is coming to an end?
They finally arrive in Indianapolis, where Kiaya hopes to find her sister, then travel to Rowan's home in Troy, Ohio. But, will they find their loved ones alive and well or turned into one of the walking undead? "This world, this new reality, was just too painful." There is plenty of emotion and sadness as they learn the truth.
I enjoyed the fact that the author intertwined this book with her other series, "Broken World" when Rowan meets one of the characters from that book. It just added another element of enjoyment to an already wonderful book.
The characters were well-written and believable and the author does a good job with slowly introducing them to each other and to the reader. The book had plenty of action and tension for the diehard zombie lover and plenty of human interaction for the rest of us. By the end of the book, I was emotionally exhausted and deeply saddened by the events of the story. But, I also felt hope that life would continue, even in the face of a zombie apocalypse. I look forward to continuing this series and hope that the author keeps writing for a long, long time.
Well, this is #11 book by Kate L. Mary that I’ve read or listened to, typically giving a 4-or- 5-star rating. I’ve pretty much loved them all. All but this one, that is. I hate leaving poor reviews when there aren’t that many posted to begin with.
On a positive note, I love that the author can write about zombies (#1 favorite) and make each story or series different from the previous ones. When the characters know about zombies (which seems rare at least per the books I’ve read) is a big plus to me. It’s like no matter the year the story is taking place in, how would people not have heard of zombies?
Now, on a not so positive note. With the previous stories being so great, maybe I had too high of expectations. There’s a fellow author I follow whose written many stories. The majority I’ve been a fan of while a select few not so much. Similarly to her stories that I gave less than stellar reviews on, I know what made this zombie story stand out in such a negative way, for me, at least. I don’t know if Mrs. Mary did something different, but I found more inconsistencies/questionable areas throughout this story that I normally don’t find. Most readers probably wouldn’t even pick up on these, but that’s just how my brain works. I notice the little things.
For me, long reviews equal problems in the story.
Questions/Comments:
Inconsistency #1. Rowan wants to jump into the motel pool. She strips down to her bra and underwear. The thing is … she wasn’t wearing a bra. At least not when she was out earlier in the day when she broke into the gas station. I find this inconsistency interesting since, at the beginning of the chapter (7), it states: “again stumbled from the room without getting a bra.” So unless sometime before they left for the gas station she put one on…
Inconsistency #2. Driving through Amarillo, the car gets covered in zombies. It’s loud. The loudness is mentioned several times. Example #1. “I said, having to talk louder than normal so he could hear me over the pounding.” Example #2. “With the constant banging of the dead against the car” (obviously that would create a lot of noise). Example #3. “I asked Devon, having to talk even louder this time.” Example #4. “The pounding increased tenfold and I had the urge to cover my ears.” THEN, “Between the banging and the moans, loud enough NOW to penetrate the glass and metal encasing us…” Those words make it sound as though not much sound got through to the people inside when we know that wasn’t the case.
Inconsistency #3. Devon is driving the car. Rowan is in the passenger seat and Kiaya and Hank are in the back seats. Rowan is trying to see Hank’s bite wound. “I leaned back so I could get a good look…” Since she’s turned in her seat to look in the back seat, she’s not leaning back. She would be leaning forward.
Questionable phrase #1. “I paused in the middle of trying to soak the water from my hair.” Soak? QP #2. “A couple more cars, and hopefully we’ll have them both filled up. Then we can get out of here.” If they had two gas tanks plus the car, they should have technically needed three tanks worth of gas. This exact thing is mentioned later on, needing three tanks, so why wasn’t it caught here? QP #3. “The thing looked huge at first sight (it’s huge), but the closer we got, the more I realized exactly how big it actually was. Hundreds of feet tall, probably.” So at first, it looks huge. How does it look once they’re closer? Huge? Huge is huge.
Moving on:
Learning about Rowan’s first time was… I wasn’t a fan at all. It’s such a cliché situation that I’m sure I was left frowning after reading the first few lines. So sad.
I found it strange that even after Rowan thinks of how her mother likes helping people and that she might end up going outside if she sees someone, she still doesn’t let her mother know about the zombies.
Devon is checking on Rowan’s back wound. He stands up and is gazing downward still. Somehow, Rowan knows he’s looking at her butt (which would seem very random given the situation) and not her wound. Yes because her butt is more eye-catching than a wound. But her back is to him and she is just looking over her shoulder. How would she know where exactly he was looking at?
The zombies move away from the car after Hank sets a car alarm off. So, how in the world did he manage to get way ahead of Rowan’s car? At times, Devon is driving sixty miles an hour through the city. This goes on for a bit. Then Hank is magically ahead of them, waving them to stop. How?
Devon is going through the military jeep looking for supplies. “Inside were a couple of MREs, a canteen filled with old coffee, and three notebooks.” So, he unscrewed the canteen to see what was inside? Why? Was he suddenly dehydrated and wishing for an old drink.
They are looking for medicine for Hank. They go into a grocery store. Did any of them have a thought of getting more supplies? Nope. Or is this one of those things where the reader isn’t supposed to wonder about? My husband tells me I sometimes read too much into a story, get nit-picky about minor things. I don’t know what to say.
The dresser at the top of the stairs - why didn’t they move it when coming and going, to make it easier to get to the second-floor landing?
Speaking of stairs, if there are two staircases leading to the second floor, why in the world would they have only blocked one of them?
Why after they move a second dresser on top of the first one (on the landing of the second floor) does it still say, “There was still only one measly dresser at both the top and the bottom of the stairs?” No there wasn’t. The bottom had a single dresser. The top had two dressers.
The door to the adjoining motel room was only ever “open a crack.” This repetitive line was used four different times, it seemed every time one of the characters went into the main room (the girl’s side).
I swear there are multiple times in the story when Rowan mentions how she didn’t think Devon likes her when he’s only ever been nice to her. Why would she have ever thought this way?
Rowan asks Devon how Charlie is doing after getting bit by the zombie. “He snapped out of it about two hours ago.” How so exactly? Snapping out of it makes me think he was coherent, maybe talking to them, acting human. So what changed?
During the mayhem, after Charlie turns, Rowan comes across a “woman sitting on the ground, holding her arm as she screamed” from being bitten. Whatever happened to this lady?
Devon creates the distraction so everyone can get out of the motel. They find him running down a street with zombies following. The zombies are mentioned as being slow. So … why does Buck get out and start shooting them? Why waste the bullets?
Speaking of bullets, I couldn’t figure out why the characters wouldn’t have been more eager to find knives. Guns = loud noise = attracts zombies. Knives = quiet = … Just thinking of them shooting Zara’s foster parents in the garage had me shaking my head in disbelief, like seriously? They could have grabbed a knife from the kitchen (#1), been quiet (#2), gone back outside and opened the garage (#3), then been able to see the “dad” and killed him quietly.
“We hadn’t had a lot of opportunities to test the zombie theory,” that they would die getting shot in the brain. How would they have not known this by now? How many zombies have been killed in front of them? Getting shot, the zombie will either get back up or not.
Driving through one of the cities, Rowan thinks of how “there were signs of living.” But there were no details regarding how she knew there were people in the city still.
If Zara is hiding in her foster parent's house, scared of the zombies, how was the front door unlocked?
Why after rescuing Zara did they determine they needed to get another vehicle? Seriously. Yes, there is another person, but given the SUV has Randall (who could move to the passenger seat to take up less space), Mike, and his tiny sister in the back seat, Zara could have easily fit inside.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Woohoo Kate L. Mary is headed back into the zombie apocalypse world!!! I read her Oklahoma Wastelands and I’m kicking myself for not knowing about her Broken World Series until after it was finished.
Rowan is away for college. She was adopted and her parents are very involved in her life, ESP her mom. Which is why she chose a college so far away.
There’s a deadly virus spreading across the U.S and people are dropping like flies. Rowan just wants to go home and be with her parents even though they’ve told her to stay there bc it’s safer. Rowan decides to take matters into her own hands.
Rowan gets cleared for traveling. Then she meets Kiaya and Kyle and together they start their travel home. Kiaya’s very quiet and Kyle seems to be the talkative one. Until he starts getting sick and they’re forced to pullover in Vega, Texas and get a hotel room.
Almost instantly Rowan meets Devon and she def doesn’t want anything to do with him. Rowan and Kiaya take turns looking after Kyle until he passes away.
Rowan gets some helpful information from a stranger and it gets her thinking things are definitely going to get worse before they get better. It’s a matter of survival of the fittest.
Before they can gather supplies and get outta there they learn the dead are coming back from the dead as zombies. Luckily for them Devon was there just in time.
They’re three strangers trying to survive. They agree to travel together. The plan is go get Kiaya’s younger sister and go to Rowan’s house and then they’ll figure out what’s next afterwards.
Getting to the endpoint is proving harder then they ever thought possible. Who can they trust on their travels.
OMG!!! I’ve read a decent amount of apocalypse and zombie books. Every book it’s happened awhile ago, some their entire lives. This is entirely different then every book I’ve read!!
You see the first zombies along with Kiaya and Rowan. See how they go from doing things by the book to “stealing” supplies. Learning just how to survive and to trust complete strangers.
Kate L. Mary did such an amazing job writing this story. She has such an amazing way of writing that you find yourself wanting to be friends with the characters. Which is crazy bc they’re fighting zombies but Kate’s just that good of an author.
I read it in one day bc I was hooked from page one to the ending. By the last chapter I was crying right along with Rowan. I’m invested in Kiaya, Devon, Rowan and their friends getting their HEA. I hope book two releases soon bc I’m dying to know what happens next.
I love this Zombie Apocalypse world so hard! From beginning to end this new series set in the same world as the Broken World series had me hooked. The characters and their stories, the way they interact and how quickly thru bond to each other is awe inspiring. In a world where the dead come to life and nothing is certain, they don't crumble, they don't succumb, they don't surrender to despair, they keep fighting, they keep surviving and mist importantly, they stick together. Family is not just what your born into, it can become a group of survivors that can't imagine leaving a single person behind. Well maybe one.... A surprise encounter with some characters I adore made it impossible to forget and I cannot wait for the next installment! Well done again to the author on another five star read in her zombie infested world!
After a virus with flu like symptoms sweeps through their college and dormitory three students want to go home. One of the students wants to go to Indiana and the other two to Oklahoma.
Tragedy strikes the three students that leaves them stuck in Texas for a spell. One of them contracts the virus leaving the other two to look after the sick.
After Kyle succumbs to the virus and dies Rowan and Kiaya must trudge on to their destination. But first they will need a few supplies and gas for the car before continuing on their journey home. While out gathering supplies the girls soon see the dead up and walking.
The girls make their plans and prepare to leave the next day. While taking a swim in the pool after a long walk from obtaining a few supplies Rowan runs into a strong muscular man Devan who joins them on their journey. The girls are not sure at first if they can trust this dude but after a few run ins with zombies they soon figure out they need all the muscle they can get if they are going to survive the zombies.
Kate L. Mary is an awesome writer and knows how to make zombies come alive on the pages. Oh I love me some zombies I can’t seem to get enough of them. Kate L. Mary made the world of Far From Home come alive as well.
The characters all felt as if I had known them all my life. Well there was this one character who I had pegged from the get go. Now he was something else hiding behind his mask. But I do have to say he fit it with the group nicely and I do imagine he has a role to play.
You know Far From Home reminded me of Stephen King’s The Stand and The Walking Dead. We need more zombie TV shows and I do believe that Far From Home would make a great one. I hope to see it on the big screen in HD one of these days. I will carry Far From Home with me for a long, long time. These characters have a special place in my heart now and I will carry them with me too.
Oh my goodness! Kate has done it again! This is the start of another great series…Far From Home. She acknowledges that this is her 40th book, and I think that I can honestly say that I have read every one of them. Her characters are wonderful. Most are likable, some are crazy, some are wickedly insane, and some are just unfortunately vulnerable. Always some romance thrown in. She often slips in beloved characters from the other novels, so you automatically know what stage of the apocalypse you're in, and I always feel like she's thrown me a cookie when I see them.
I chose to read this book after receiving a free e-copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.
This is the first book I’ve read by Kate L. Mary but it won’t be the last. I’m not sure what fascinates me about post apocalyptic worlds, with or without zombies, but I think it has to do with the survivors. Not the violence or gore.
I like the characters in Far From Home. I was especially impressed by Rowan. She knows she’s had it easy all her life and that she always has gotten what she wanted. Instead of feeling entitled when everything starts to change, she takes action. She is a little immature at times, but she’s only 20 years old.
After Rowan and Kiaya leave for Ohio from school in Arizona, one thing after another keeps them from their destination. From seeing almost everyone around them die to them turning into zombies, they have to figure out how to get home with no gas stations open and not knowing who to trust.
There is no down time in this book and it is full of suspense both from the zombies and other people. I can’t wait to find out what they’re group is going to do from here.
I've said it so many times, Kate L Mary writes the only zombie books I read. I've read a few others but most pale in comparison. There's nothing lacking in this book, even Angus shows up briefly.
I loved every second of this book. Kate did it again and I need book 2 yesterday! Strong characters, great visualizations, story lines that make sense considering the circumstances.
The Broken World series has a new chapter . This is a new take on the deadly virus and another group of people who are trying to find their own way to survive. Rowan and her new friends kiaya and kyle start out to find family members they hope have survived the virus . One of the group fall ill to the virus and this becomes a very sad scene .Along the way the pick up Devon , who becomes a important member of the surviving group. It overlaps with some other scenes from the Broken world books and some of our favorites make a short cameo . Loved the writing and looking forward to more ...
Kudos to you Kate...to take this little band of kids, have them suffer a loss, run into Angus of all people, and then unfold a journey into their brand of hell. You never fail to deliver a great story! I'm looking forward to the next chapter of Rowan and Devon's journey.
This is the first book I’ve read from this author. She was recommend by another author I read and I’m so happy to have discovered her. I absolutely love zombies books and I can’t believe I haven’t found this author until now. I loved the characters and the drama and the plot. Just everything. I can’t wait for book 2 and I have some questions I can’t wait to get answers.
Love the storyline and the characters. Not boring at all. Plenty of action and drama with a little fun thrown in. You need to read this one. I hope there's more to come.
I really enjoy the Broken World series and its spin0ffs. This new series has my interest and I cannot wait to see how the characters grow with the changes the apocalypse makes on the world. Kate L. Mary has done a fantastic job creating this zombie world, and frankly I cannot read enough about it. I'm excited to see how Rowan and Devon's relationship progresses in the next book.
This is a good first book in this series. I am anxious to read the next one and the one after that. I usually don't start a series if most of isnt written but I couldn't wait. You will love this book.
I did enjoy this end of the world zombie adventure! A good & interesting group of characters & a well paced story! An overall very good fun read if you love this genre! I do recommend this & hope to read more by this writer in the future!
