EARTH HAS CHANGED. The old world order collapsed following the meteor impacts of 2031 when fire rained down from the skies, instantly vaporizing millions. Billions more died during the Long Winter and resource wars that followed.

Over one hundred years have passed since those devastating events and new societies have formed around the globe. In North America, the fragile peace that exists among the continent’s independent nations and city-states is under threat. The ambitious Grand Guardian of the People's Republic of America is mobilizing his massive war machine in order to make real his dream of reunifying a former great power.

But on the eve of the offensive, a leading scientist dies under mysterious circumstances, though not before he entrusts another with the key to unlocking a secret. A secret so powerful, it could not only unravel the Grand Guardian’s designs, but also doom, or save, all of humanity.

The Navigator, PM Johnson’s 2016 novel is a lot of fun.

Similar in setting and tone to Poul Anderson’s 1983 novel Orion Shall Rise, Johnson describes a near future post-apocalyptic world with dystopian elements. North America, and the rest of the world, has been decimated by a series of devastating asteroid strikes decades earlier. While there has been successful rebuilding, much has changed. The United States is now a decentralized collection of loose confederacies and independent city-states, with only the eastern coast approaching a modern technological quality of life.

This aspect of the narrative is obliquely reminiscent of Robert A. Heinlein’s Starship Troopers and more specifically director Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 film adaptation. The People’s Republic of America is held together by an oligarchical group of “Guardians” in an autocratic, militaristic system. Young protagonist Logan’s world is changed dramatically and irrevocably after he makes an unusual discovery about his grandfather, a recently deceased scientist.

Johnson’s great achievement here is his imaginative world building. While speculative fiction readers have seen plenty of the post-ap/dystopian sub-genre in recent years, Johnson throws in some tasty and unexpected changes that makes this appealing and very readable.

Fast moving and full of sci-fi action, this invites the reader along for a roller coaster ride with some outlandish militaristic undertones. Johnson has laid down a good foundation for a thrilling series.

Fantastic, quick paced, sci-fi read!

The Navigator is a fantastic story! The pace is perfectly balanced. It provides the reader with exciting fights that will have you fist bumping the air saying, "yes!" And with enough conspiracy and mystery to make you keep reading with the demand of explanations. You will get your explanations along with a few more questions to keep you guessing and wondering. This story makes me think of a Dan Brown meets Kevin J. Anderson sci-fi merge. A great read that will pull you in and not let go.

MY GOD!!!!

I wish I were a woman!!!!!

“Lena Moreau was hyper-competitive by any standard, and she excelled at everything from academics to close-quarters combat.”

“… She scored a point with a lightning fast strike to his sword arm,.…”

“…I’m sure she got away.  She’s smart, fast, and tough as nails.”

“…I feel sorry for the poor bastard who tangles with her….”

“ Cap pulled his eyes away from Lena’s and saw the grip of a pistol sticking out of a shoulder holster under her jacket.”

“… ‘You can call me Attika,’ she replied.  Then she said in a cold, measured tone. ‘Now that introductions are over, if I tell you to do something, you’d better make damn sure you do it.  I just shot a man because you failed to listen to me.  Never do that again.’ ”

“‘…how did you get into the apartment?’ asked Cap.  ‘You didn’t know the code.  I heard Fischer close the door.’ Lena looked at him, raised an eyebrow, and said, ‘I’m resourceful.’”

“Even with a pack on her back and a gun slung over her shoulder, Lena moved with surprising agility and ease.”

“…Lena quickly and competently went about suturing his wound. When she was finished, Kane examined Lena’s work and the six sutures she had sewn.  ‘Good job,’ he said.  ‘I appoint you team surgeon.’”

“…Sleep deprivation, physical persuasion, psych interrogations, all that stuff was failing.  They seemed to make her stronger….”

“…Lena nimbly hurtled over a log….”

“…A blonde-haired young woman in green and brown battle fatigues and body armor opened the side door of the helicopter…She waved and yelled, ‘Get in!  Let’s go!  Let’s go!’ They leaped to their feet and ran for the aircraft.  One by one, she pulled them aboard and directed them to a spot on a bench….”

“…Logan looked behind him toward the main building to see a group of troopers with handheld missile launchers.  Among them was Lena.  She was leaning against the side of the building holding a spent launcher in her hands.  He turned toward the north and saw the retreating gunship was now trailing thick black smoke….”

“…He’d served under a lot of PRA officers while on summer active duty.  Most were tough, but their strength flowed from feelings of anger, suspicion, and hate.  Not Styles.  Her strength flowed from a belief in something bigger than herself….”

“… Sahiradin attacked Lena, but she fell back and deftly countered her opponent’s slashing attack.  Then, with blinding speed, she spun on her right foot and crouched low, slicing the Sahiradin’s leg at the knee, sending him to the ground.  She immediately drove her blade into his throat above his breast protection….”

“…Lena stumbled, which drew a Sahiradin a few steps out from their formation.  He lunged for the kill, but it was a trap.  Lena deflected the blade and countered with a flurry of counter strikes….Lena’s blade finally struck home and the Sahiradin collapsed to the ground clasping a deep wound to his throat….”

—O GODDESS, GREAT GAIA!! PLEASE! TO BE A WOMAN, would just be the absolute best!!!!

I could be smart, tough, resourceful, hyper-competitive, have strength from something bigger than myself, carry a gun, shoot folks, fly around in helicopters, tangle with poor bastards, and be all like lightning-fast and stuff!!!

WARNING: this book contains polite “sipping,” and refined “accepting,” and other really really really really really annoying bllsht.

This book gets really even sillier, really fast (p.80).

In my OPINION, this is another stinker!!!

“‘…listening stations on Earth detected the unmistakable sound of an explosion, which they believed originated somewhere between Mars and Jupiter….’”

* NOTE TO AUTHOR: IN SPACE THERE IS NO SOUND!!!!

“When she heard the TAC unit move to the next room, Attika quietly approached the door.  Halfway there, she heard the unmistakable ringing sound of blades striking each other.  It sounded as though it was coming from the fourth floor.  Gregor was a Baku-trained swordsman, but Attika doubted he could hold out against two SPD TAC units in battle gear.”

* * NOTE TO AUTHOR: on entering a room —any room — the first thing they do is, they toss a Flash-Bang grenade inside, which will stun anybody to near-immobility. The second thing they do is, they come inside and kill you.

“Attika’s opponent was nearly on her when Gregor stepped in to block his advance, kicking him in the side of his right knee and driving his sword into his thigh.  Gregor immediately spun around to deflect the blades of two TAC officers who had raced up behind him, but lost his footing and slipped.  One of the TAC officers seized the opportunity and stepped forward to drive his blade deep into Gregor’s back.  Gregor screamed in pain and fell to one knee.  The other officer drove his blade into his chest.”

Yeah, yeah, yeah…so what? Extremely fkking BORING!!!!!

I just skipped entire pages of this fight, and it made no difference whatever. And I avoided being bored by unmitigated bllsht.

Pretty Good Poem:
Chapter 41
“I have walked these lands a thousand times, And each time my eyes burn hot with tears.
I entered a forest full of wild people, Who shivered and rattled their spears in great rage.
I’ve crossed wide rivers, their bridges still broken.
I’ve walked shores beset by pirates and brigands.
I’ve watched as thousands marched head low to prison.
I’ve climbed up mountains that reached to the sky, Where the people had no spirit, their hearts no love.
We are the sons and daughters of castaways, Standing in rags amid the wreckage of a once mighty ship.”
Francis Bay.  “A Once Mighty Ship.”  Songs from the Aftermath.

———————-

“Cap” is one of the most annoying characters ever created. Then, again, all of these characters are stock, vapid, trite, hackneyed, and over used in many many many many many many many many similar books.

“Cap had been dozing when the guards entered.  He stretched and yawned.  ‘I hope there’s coffee and food wherever we’re going.’

“‘You’ve been stuffing your face for the last thirty-six hours,’ said Lena.  ‘I’m surprised there’s any room left in your stomach.’”

Our Hero, whatever his name is, has no personality at all, and I can’t even recall his name, let alone root for him.

The fight scenes around P. 3oo stink and are meaningless and can be skipped.

Book —in my opinion — stinks. I just quit, not caring what “happens” next. I stopped, and returned the book.

I loved this book! At first, you think you’re in for a typical dystopian book (all-powerful central government run by a clique of “Guardians”, etc.), but soon you find out there’s a lot more going on - political rivalries, competing visions of governance, environmentalism, and an interesting take on human origins. Fast-paced and well-written. I'm looking forward to book 2.

3 1/2 stars. This is the first science-fiction I've read in quite a while as I normally read fantasy. This one started as dystopian fiction, but transformed along the way.
Futuristic America, following an apocalypse of meteors, has fractured into three parts. The one followed in the story is like a communist police state. The three main heroes of the story defect from there with an important object the leaders of state desperately want back. And shortly afterward various races of aliens show up, all of whom want the object also.
The premise is interesting and so are the various weapons and personal shielding employed throughout the story. The writing was fast-paced enough to keep my attention.
The small units actions would have been better had the author more of an idea of what he was writing about. (A lance corporal would not command a fire team of 12-20 troopers, except through attrition; and important soldiers with authority to fly critical aircraft, interrogate high-ranking POW's, and have immediate access to general officers would not remain 'privates' in the military-every time the three were referred to as privates just made me shake my head.) I hope the author keeps that in mind in his sequel. If not for those glaring problems I would have given this book a full fourth star.

Earth has divided into political factions following an apocalyptic asteroid impact over a century ago. On the verge of graduating from his military academy, Cadet Logan receives a mystical legacy that sets him on a new and dangerous path. Along with two of his friends, he escapes their oppressive society and reaches freedom only to discover an alien conflict is taking place above Earth. As he fights the enemy on the ground, alien starships are engaged in their own battle for survival. Only Logan, who’s inherited a unique power as a navigator, can turn the tide.

I liked the cadets during the first section where they struck out on their own to seek the truth but then too many battle scenes took place sequentially. I found myself skimming the action sequences and politics looking for something more personal. Hopefully, subsequent books in this series have more focus on the main characters. But if you like sci-fi stories that are heavy on battle scenes, you’ll probably like this one.

Wonderful and exciting new read

In the beginning the world was as if is now. But asteroids start falling on the Us, with the greatest concentration in the midwest. Or world was devastated, the environment thoroughly thrown out of wack, summer was as winter, winter was extreme, billions died, war over the resources that was left.
Now the US was gone, the Peoples Republic of America held the center. The League of City States held east of the Mississippi, the Southern Union held the south, while the West was governed by The Pacific Coalition.
Logan has just completed his academy and graduated with honors is suddenly thrown into fleeing from the PRN. Accused as a traitor of the state.. This is his story of survival with Cap and Ravenswood. Really a very enjoyable reading adventure.

This story starts out a little disjointed at first, but as it progresses, it get's a lot better. The action in the second half of the book is very good and well explained (even though the strategy is quite complex). The first half of the book is definitely 3 stars, but the second half is a 5, so an overall average is 4 stars. One thing that I noticed in the first half of the book, the author likes to give descriptions of new characters like he's giving a statement of a suspect to the police. Specific facts, all in a row. I'm not a fan of this method. I'd rather have a character described to me over a few paragraphs or pages instead. Overall, I really enjoyed this book. If you read it, just make sure to stick around for the second half.

A pleasant surprise

It’s not often that I stumble across a storyline that I don’t find predictable ( but usually still enjoyable), This one held a few surprises for me even though the writing itself seemed somewhat stilted. I got The Navigator as a freebie through Bookbud, and will most likely purchase the next book in the series as soon as I recharge my amazon account with this year’s Christmas gift card.

great read that develops in a surprising way

Situated on an earth that is recuperating from devastation caused by multiple meteorites impact, the story follow three friends who escape a repressive regime in the eastern parts of the former USA only to be confronted by… aliens. It sounds absurd at first but the story is credible and carefully constructed. I loved the first book and I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Major plot inconsistencies.

The writing is decent though skips too readily from action sequence to action sequence. 11 stones have been captured and consigned to black holes but if the last is gained by the enemy they will become overwhelmingly powerful. The 11 didn't but the last will, yeah right. Swings of battle advantage happen to easily, too contrived. Good potential but needs work.

I thought it was good, plenty going on that kept me entertained, action, intrigue, an interesting premise, a very loose analogy, if you like, would be a sort of The Court of King Arthur meets Star Wars. Two very different threads, but came together nicely. The only thing that irked me slightly, was nearly two hundred years in the future an interstellar spacefaring species are using swords as weapons, go figure. Apart from that I enjoyed it.

An exciting story skillfully written

The story starts out as a post-apocalyptic dystopian story on Earth. I like how the author reveals the broader scope little bits at a time. With each new revelation one still is unsure what's going on until the story has progressed quite a ways.

An intriguing Story

This was an enjoyable book with lots of intrigue and suspense. I certainly had a difficult time putting it down. I was amazed at how close to what I think is Trump’s thinking that the thoughts/sayings of the PRC Grand Guardian at the start of many chapters were. I enjoyed the parallel to what has happened to the US in the last 5 years.

Battles galore

Battles Galore!!! If you like page after page of war strategies and details of hand to hand combat, this book is for you. The first third of the book as interesting, developing mystery and characters. Once the war started, it was endless battle descriptions. Just not one of my areas of interest.

Great background to story drawing you into events as a participant

Background makes you want to see where author is taking story. Introduction of second and third variables makes you wonder what is going to be the next twist to the story. Looking forward to reading next installment in series.

Review of : The Navigator (Apollo Stone Series Book 1)

I really liked reading the above named book. It was another new concept in Sci-fi that to my knowledge hadn't been used before. I guess the only criticism I have is if you have troopers, you don't lance corporals, lance is a marine term. Also trooper usually implies cat or airborne not regular army Infantry.

After a few pages into this book, i almost put it away because it just didn't grab me at all. But i kept on and somewhere it caught me. It just seemed oh another dystopian novel. But it took a twist and another twist and there i was, hooked. If this is the author's first book, congratulations! now, i have to read the rest of this series.

Could have been so much better. The characters weren't developed enough, and it seems that all they did was fight constantly. Not with each other, just constant battles and fights.

The ending actually started to go somewhere, but unfortunately not enough for me to continue reading the 2nd book.

Science fiction is not really my favorite. I found it to be too long with way to much explanation and facts that were not really necessary. I did.love the characters personalities and relationship, plus the few surprises regarding their origin. For such a long story there were a few things that were left unexplained. Probably because it was intended to be a series.

A must read!

I am constantly amazed what si-fi authors can imagine, then write in such coherent stories. P.M. Johnson did a wonderful job with this in all aspects of the craft. A must read!!

A good story. Full of creatures, aliens and a divided country try.

This stretches the imagination and proposes that so.easy humans and aliens from space end up in a war. They are joined by a variety of woodland creatures.

Very creative integration of many human traits with alien invasion. Good strong main characters will keep readers interest. Fast moving especially last third of book. Great ending even though reader expected it. Good writer's lead to following book.

A good scene setting introduction to the series. The cast of attractive heroes/heroines are nicely established. So looking forward to the next instalment.

I’ve been reading this genre almost exclusively for a while now, and this one is not the worst. I found it implausible that the tech-superior aliens could be bested in battle by human. The main character did not hold my interest or sympathy enough to continue this series. I
