A poignant story about a young couple finding strength in their faith to overcome terrible tragedy.
J. B. and Nora have left their home in Omaha to stake a claim further west on the Oregon Trail. They’ve traveled for months and finally arrived in Pendleton, a small town with promise. They own two claims of beautiful land but there’s no fence, no barn, no house and their baby is due to be born in a few short months; time to get busy!
Author, Shanna Hatfield, writes engaging stories about people who feel familiar and believable. Even tho’ these events took place over 150 years ago, the emotions and tragedy shared by this young couple happen every day in towns all over the world. Not only does Hatfield show the raw emotions experienced but she gives a brief look into being overcome by grief before ultimately the heroine finds victory, drawing strength from friends, family and her faith.
“Gift of Grace” is more than the title, it’s a double entendres that you’ll need to read the story for to figure out. This story isn’t really a Christmas or holiday tale either, it just finishes in that season of the year. It’s also not really a romance. Yes, there’s a young couple and they are most decidedly in love but the story is about how they help each other move forward from tragedy and find/be their best selves. Filled with strong emotions and heart wrenching tragedy, the path back is a well written historical adventure📚

CW: death of infant child
This is novella length and it doesn't do the weighty subject matter any favors. I think the author was shooting for a marriage in trouble story, but we never really see the husband grieve openly on page and the heroine runs hot/cold. She's angry with her husband when it's convenient to the narrative and then the next moment things seem fine. Also his authoritative attitude while his wife is openly mourning is distasteful.
There's leaps in time between chapters which makes transitions bumpy. I never got a good bead on these people and couldn't figure out why I should care about them. Also there are a number of secondary characters on the page that doesn't really add much to the story other than to serve as filler that could have been better utilized to beef up the narrative, add more angst, and flesh out the romantic couple.

A sweet story of overcoming grief
J.B. and Nora Nash had already overcome their grief over the death of their families. Moving to Pendleton, Oregon allowed them to have a fresh start. With their wonderful neighbors and the community they helped establish, things were looking up.
Until...
When tragedy hit, Nora was inconsolable. Her grief was debilitating and I felt so bad for her. J.B. was such a rock and though he grieved as well, instead of hiding from life as Nora did, he threw himself into the chores and upkeep of their ranch.
I greatly admired J.B. and the way he handled his pain. And how he continued to put up with Nora. I loved the courage he showed and how he finally got her to leave her bed of sorrow!! While I understood Nora's grief and empathized with her, I disliked the way she treated her husband during that time. Yet she did grow past it by learning to look beyond herself to the needs of others.
While the story could have been bogged down by the sadness and lashing out, it didn't. Shanna Hatfield added just enough detail about Nora's pain to make it clear yet infused the story with hope. The secondary characters, such as little Erik and his caring mother, kept the tone light.
There is a lot of backstory here and as it unfolded, some of it felt like an information dump. The story awas not like this in general but there were a few pages worth.
Overall, this was a sweet story of sacrifice in the midst of pain that ended with hope and forgiveness.
If you have read the Pendleton Petticoats series, you will enjoy getting this introduction to the Nash family from before the time that series begins.

TRIGGER WARNINGS:
Set in the 1870's in Pendleton, OR, Gift of Grace follows J.B. and Nora Nash as they start their new life together.
When tragedy strikes, J.B. uses his ranch work to distract him, but Nora folds in on herself, blaming J.B. and refusing to move from the bed.
J.B. finally pulls Nora from her stupor by loving her and showing her the good left in life.
----
I wanted to like this book, and a lot of it I did. But I could not get past Nora's thoughts and actions. I understand that in a situation where there are no answers that people lash out in anger, even when they don't mean it, but Nora started to act like a spoiled brat instead of a grieving mother. Honestly, I don't know how J.B. dealt with her.
In the end, Nora redeemed herself somewhat, but my feelings for her were colored by her previous actions.

"Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning." Psalm 30:5. This lovely Bible verse more than typifies both the mood and theme of Shanna Hatfield's latest historical romance. This is story #1 in her Gifts of Christmas collection and a prequel to her splendid Pendleton Petticoats series.
J.B. and Nora Nash have recently migrated from the post-Civil War misery of the high plains to the outskirts of rapidly growing Pendleton, Oregon. Things are looking up on their new ranch nicknamed "Nash's Folly" when an unspeakable tragedy strikes them both. Never in all of literature have I been captivated by how Shanna Hatfield put into words the wild emotional turmoil that a wife and mother endure at the loss of a child. The unconsolable misery that captures Nora almost destroys her sanity and indeed her marriage. Husband J.B. is also grief-stricken but like most men he throws himself both into his work and his loving but frustrated efforts to return Nora back to a sense of normality. Join them and their loving and thoughtful friends and neighbors as the community rallies to rescue them with the joy of Christmas. I would be remiss if I did not tell you, dear readers, how J.B. and Nora appear throughout the Pendleton Petticoats series as stalwarts who lead, help and mentor everyone in their sphere. Bring lots of Kleenex but fear not because the author eventually brings a glorious HEA!

In this season of profound love, The Gift of Grace (Gifts of Christmas Book One) by Shanna Hatfield has given her readers a sweet romance with twists and turns which turns a devastating tragedy into blessings far beyond their expectations.
Nora and J.B. Nash left the sad memories from the Civil War in the past, heading for Pendleton, Oregon and a future bright with the anticipation of their first child. When tragedy strikes, they draw further apart. Rather than relying on one another to get through their grief, each blames the other as they slip deeper into despair. It’s not until J.B. takes matters into his own hands, pulling Nora, kicking and screaming (literally!!), back into the land of the living, do they both realize though their faith has been shaken, grace continues to bless them with good friends and neighbors who enrich their lives.
The Gift of Grace is a heart-wrenching story. Ms. Hatfield has weaved a heartbreaking story into one overflowing with hope, sprinkled with humor, laced with blessings, and most importantly, tied with abiding love.
I received an ARC from this author. This is my honest review.

I was immediately drawn into this story of Nora and JB. We were taken back to the start of the Pendleton community and I loved seeing the familiar characters grow and develop.
Nora and JB arrive to Pendleton and are excited to start building their new ranch. They are thrilled to meet new friends and to start their family together. Unfortunately they learn that some gifts are just for the short term and they need to learn how to let them go and keep moving on. An emotional story that many can relate to.
I definitely recommend reading this book, especially if you have read any of the Pendleton Petticoats series.

Heartbreaking
Out if all the Shanna Hatfield books I’ve read, this may be my least favorite. The first twelve chapters were so depressing. And before any of you say, ”You had to have it happen…”, well I have lost a child by miscarriage about 50 years ago and it is still troubling. It is devastating to lose a child. But Shanna, I don’t want to read about depression going on and on and on and on. Finally Nora did start to come out if it, thank God. J.B. was a good husband, patient and kind. Neighbors were thoughtful and helpful. There should have been a large and deep, all encompassing faith message here like in some of your other books.

A Gift of Grace is a well-written story about loss and love. I liked that the main characters were already married, and despite them being fairly young, I could relate to them as they navigated the difficulties thrown at them. They matured, and in the end their marriage was stronger for what they’d experienced. I loved how JB took the lead in helping Nora heal, giving her space, then getting in her space to force her to deal with the situation. He was firm but loving. Messages of hope and God’s sovereignty were woven throughout the story reminding readers that although we don’t always understand why things happen, we can rest in God’s loving arms and His perfect plans.

Could not finish it.
Ok, since I hate to give a 1 star review, I gave it 2. After all, the writing itself was not so bad, and better edited than many e books. However, ignoring my better instincts, I kept slogging through, even though I need I should have quit. Still, well more than half way through the book, it is just full of malfunction and grief, and little communication. I don't know if the end could have made me think any of my wasted time was worth it, but I couldn't face one more page.

Gift of Grace is Book #1 in Gifts of Christmas series by Shanna Hatfield.
Arriving in town, the couple seemed to have a bright future ahead.
New home, New land to work, New friends made, and new life.
But when a life is lost, can the couple overcome their grief?
Heart-breaking and yet heartwarming, laughter and yet tears.
And one Christmas in one little Oregon town that won't be forgotten easily.
I ad trouble putting the book down and look forward to reading more books by Shanna!

A Beautifully Told Christmas Story
This beautiful story pulled me in from the beginning. Due to the author’s skill with words, I was able to “experience”the old fashioned Christmas along with the characters. Christmas is one of my favorite times of the year. Not the mall and other retailers celebrating Christmas 2 months early. Being joyful in the simple things of life and giving from the heart in spite of our circumstances is what the true spirit of Christmas is all about. Praise the Lord!!

Gift of Grace
What a special story! After the war between the states, J.B. had nothing left. His family home was destroyed and his mother killed. Already suffering from everything that happened during the war, this was too much for him. He takes off going from town to town, writing short odd jobs to survive. Then he comes to a ranch that he started working at and found a beautiful young lady. He ended up marrying her. This is their story and it’s a sweet story with a tender message; God’s love will shine through you.

This was an uplifting story
This was a very drama filled story. It has a lot of sadness in the middle chapters. The last few chapters were a little brighter. But the end never indicated if Nora was able to have more children or not. I don't appreciate when a story introduces me to lovely characters and then abruptly ends. I want the full HEA experience. But, it had to be a good story for me to be so engaged, :)

It was good to read how J.B & Nora Nash came to Pendleton and established Nash's Folly. For those readers of Aundy, book one of Pendleton Petticoats series, most of the characters will be known.
The story is one of great pain; deep, consuming sorrow, and finally, acceptance and restoration.

When J.B and Nora moved to Pendleton to start a new life they think they can finally leave behind all their sorrows. But after a devastating event their loving relationship changed. Can they heal enough to get their loving relationship back?
I loved this story, the way they have to heal and the help they get. Also helping others does help yourself.

What a beautiful story. This couple is happy and then their little baby Grace dies. They are both in dark places, but eventually together they make it back. Along the way, they help many others and are helped themselves. This is a historical romance set in the 1800's. The story is heartbreaking, but also show's God's Grace.

Loved it!
This story was so full of love. You see some of the hardships our ancestors went through. The struggles, the pain, the Civil War, the death of love ones. You will shed some tears but Shanna has a way of bringing God and His love for us into her stories. You will love the ending of this story!

Sweet and full of grace
I felt all of the emotion, the pain, all that comes with loss. But knowing there is always hope, I found myself anticipating the blossoming of grace. What a delightful afternoon spent reading this book. It was just what I needed to warm a chilly fall day. And Christmas is coming...!

A poignant story about a couple who moved to a new area and built a house and got to know neighbors and find a church. Disaster struck but with hard times getting through the loss it was with God’s Grace and friends who helped them through. Interesting reading about books set in past in America.
Thank you Shanna for gifting this book, and it hasn’t changed what I honestly think of the book.

A very compelling story. Shanna Hatfield wrote an extremely sensitive and vividly real portrayal of a young couple dealing with loss and how deal with the grief and anger that accompanies that loss. She also briefly deals with how different people deal with similar loss in different ways. I highly recommend this book.

Do yourself a favor...read it
Ms. Hatfield makes the characters and the West come to life in her books. This is tnohe second one I've read, and I am on my way to a third. Her stories are believable and heartfelt, and it is so nice to feel the love and faith of the characters burst off the pages.
