Carolyn Keene is a writer pen name that was used by many different people- both men and women- over the years. The company that was the creator of the Nancy Drew series, the Stratemeyer Syndicate, hired a variety of writers. For Nancy Drew, the writers used the pseudonym Carolyn Keene to assure anonymity of the creator.

Edna and Harriet Stratemeyer inherited the company from their father Edward Stratemeyer. Edna contributed 10 plot outlines before passing the reins to her sister Harriet. It was Mildred Benson (aka: Mildred A. Wirt), who breathed such a feisty spirit into Nancy's character. Mildred wrote 23 of the original 30 Nancy Drew Mystery Stories®, including the first three. It was her characterization that helped make Nancy an instant hit. The Stratemeyer Syndicate's devotion to the series over the years under the reins of Harriet Stratemeyer Adams helped to keep the series alive and on store shelves for each succeeding generation of girls and boys. In 1959, Harriet, along with several writers, began a 25-year project to revise the earlier Carolyn Keene novels. The Nancy Drew books were condensed, racial stereotypes were removed, and the language was updated. In a few cases, outdated plots were completely rewritten.

Other writers of Nancy Drew volumes include Harriet herself, she wrote most of the series after Mildred quit writing for the Syndicate and in 1959 began a revision of the first 34 texts. The role of the writer of "Carolyn Keene" passed temporarily to Walter Karig who wrote three novels during the Great Depression. Also contributing to Nancy Drew's prolific existence were Leslie McFarlane, James Duncan Lawrence, Nancy Axelrod, Priscilla Doll, Charles Strong, Alma Sasse, Wilhelmina Rankin, George Waller Jr., and Margaret Scherf.

I'm having fun with the Nancy Drew books with her Clue Crew girlfriends George and Bess, great examples. So when winter comes to their home town of River Heights they start making a snowman in which they named Sherlock. He wears a blue scarf and old rubber boots, and has broccoli for a nose). They have a classmate in school, named Deirdre (like a drama queen) and she has changed her name to Madame Chocolata, and even more funny reads marshmallows to tell fortunes. Then POOF, Sherlock disappears and pranks become the way it is, seriously bothering the kids. Did Sherlock come to life, or is some sneak behind the pranks causing a lot of frustration.

Then before you know it, something big and white dashed out from behind a tree. A bright blue scarf came of its neck as it went from tree to tree. Don't want to be a spoiler, but I found this to be quite a delightful story. Surprises for everyone. ENJOY!!! Recommend.

The Case of the Sneaky Snowman is the fifth book in the Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew series. Nancy Drew and her friends are on winter vacation. Nancy, Bess, and George have fun with all the winter activities. Her friend Deirdre pretends to be a fortune teller by reading hot cocoa marshmallows. They have some wild adventures when they find Nancy's missing dog and how snowball fights.

I would 5/5 rate this book. It is a great quick read for kids during the winter that get them excited for winter break. Nancy and her friends solve a mystery in each book that will keep kids on their toes.

Another super cute Clue Crew! Nancy and her two best friends are working on a case during their winter break. Madame Chocolata aka Deirdre has set up a tent in her yard and is predicting her classmates futures via hot chocolate and marshmallows. Unfortunately, this tasty treat ends up with hijinks including a missing snowman, in their neighborhood. Nancy, Bess, and George put their heads together to find their missing snowman, Sherlock, and other odd mysteries relating to Deidre's predictions. Readers should expect a really cute story and a fun snowflake activity at the end of the book.
I recommend The Case of the Sneaky Snowman to Nancy Drew fans of all ages.

I can’t speak to the quality of this book since I am not the target demographic but my daughter said this is the fourth best of the first five. She likes them all but said this one was a bit scary for her (she’s in first grade). She loves them all though.

A Quickie Review

I've read both the original and Nancy Drew Files series, but this is my first experience with the Clue Crew books. While cute and funny, it isn't quite Nancy Drew as I've come to expect her. Still, I could get used to this incarnation of the girl detective...maybe.

Score: 3/5

Nancy Drew and her friends Bess and George are in the park during winter break. They are rugged up and making a snowman. He's super good when they finish with earmuffs, kibble dog food bits for a big smiling mouth, a blue scarf, and a pair of old boots. They call the snowman Sherlock after the detective because they are the Clue Crew.

A skiboarder yells 'wipeout' and only just misses their snowman. The girls decide to get a hot chocolate with marshmallows. They see a boy outside a coloured tent wearing a turban, inside the tent they find Deidre, calling herself Madam Chocolata, telling marshmallow fortunes. The girls just want hot chocolate, so why not see what she says? Nancy doesn't believe for a minute that she's telling fortunes.

That night they were having Lasagna, not Pizza that Madam Chocolata said they were having. When the doorbell rings and Mr Drew brings back a Pizza, Nancy starts to think the prediction may be right. The next day other kids are saying they've had their predictions come true. Bess is hoping hers won't because she doesn't want to fall over on the ice of the big skating show with the two international stars watching.

When Sherlock the snowman, goes missing, and he doesn't melt but there are boot prints of him walking away, maybe the prediction of the snowman going on a journey is coming true too.

This could be another case for the Clue Crew. What is happening? Did they see a snowman walking around? Did the egg-bombing snowballs being thrown come from the snowman?

You'll have to read the book to find out.

This volume isn't quite as cute as others in the series, I think. The weird scheme of Deirdre's just feels... weird, like a big flashing red light saying, "I'm totally guilty!" It just reads... WEIRD to me. I don't know. It's not as such BAD, just... weird?

I'd still gladly buy a copy for any young reader who wants it, but the duplicates I've bought have sat untouched in most of the free libraries I've put them in. (At least the dollar store is finally running out of them, though medium-length children's books are my favourite thing to get there.)

This was really fun! I enjoyed the mystery and it was a mystery. Should I find more Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew books, I won't hesitate to read them.

8-year old Nancy and her friends George and Bess are on the case. Set during winter break, the third graders are happily playing in the snowy park - as are many of their classmates. The girls finish building their snowman and head out for hot chocolate when they meet Madame Coco Chocolata who reads fortunes in mini marshmallows.

This version of Nancy Drew, even though younger, embraces the classic more than any other "spin off." A quick fun read with a nice mystery for younger readers.

3.5 stars as most of these are. I love how they're quick reads with a fun, but simple mystery. In this one, Deirdre becomes Madame Chocolata and says she can tell fortunes through the marshmallows in hot chocolate. She predicts things and they start coming true, including a runaway snowman that Nancy and her crew built. In the end we find out a boy named Toby was making the predictions come true because he and Deirdre were sharing the profit. There was another boy who was the person dressed as a snowman for the ice show that Bess was taking place in. This one felt a little more random than the others but still good!

Reviewed by my 7-year old with spoilers: I want to give this book 5 stars because it was really interesting. Nancy, Bess and George went to a hot cocoa shop and there’s a kid named Deirdre and she turned herself into Madame Chocolata.
And so, ***spoiler alert*** there’s a boy named Toby and he was making all of Madame Chocolata’s visions come true. But, he knocked down Sherlock, who is Bess, Nancy and George’s snowman and took his blue scarf with a hole in the bottom, the dog kibbles, his broccoli nose, his shoes and his earmuffs. And so, there’s a boy whose name I can’t remember, but he was THE SNEAKY SNOWMAN!! Dun, dun, dun…

My 7 year-old read this in a couple of hours. She is hooked! I don’t blame her. Nancy Drew and The Babysitters Club is where my love for reading began.

I found this book at a thrift store and thought it might make a great read to share with my granddaughter. I found it to be an easy to follow mystery with the elements of more advance mysteries but on a level that children can follow. Nothing gruesome or scary but a wholesome story with characters from the Nancy Drew mysteries of my childhood. I cannot wait to share this story with my granddaughter.

This is a cute little mystery-perfect for beginning mystery readers (7-9). Nancy, Bess and George are all third graders who make up “The Clue Crew”. They are investigating TWO mysteries in this book-what happened to Sherlock the Snowman and can Madame Chocollata really tell the future. This is definitely a series I will recommend to my 3rd grade readers.

8 year old Nancy Drew and her best friends, Bess and George, solve a winter mystery or two. Where has their snowman gone? Who put green silly putty on the sleds? How are the hot chocolate and marshmellow fortune tellings coming true? How can they be good friends to Bess and show her that she is good enough to skate in the upcoming show with the famous ice skater duo?

Fun and easy read.

A fun book, but I like some of the other Nancy Drew books that I've read with my children more. The ultimate reveal is a little underwhelming, and my children (the target audience) didn't seem to like this one that much, either.

Adorable. Makes me really want a cup of hot cocoa haha. For kids they might find the suspects to be a but challenging, for adults you’ll know like 20 pages in. But it was cute nonetheless, and I love the theme!

My kids LOVED it, and I enjoyed it too. It's a mystery for children, so for me it was pretty see-through. The kids had fun trying to figure it out though. Overall, it was a fun adventure to go on together. I think we'll try to find more of the Clue Crew series!

It took me about 10 minutes to read.

It was cute. A very modern mystery geared towards 9 to 12 year olds, at the most.

I loked it, but 100% prefer the original books.

This was a clever little story. Even at 41, I loved the idea of Madame Chocolatta. So adorable. My girls, 5 and 7 loved the idea of a sneaky snowman, and were invested in the mystery. Fun!

I didn't like how they were blaming everything on Bess. This wasn't my favorite Clue Crew book.
