We used to think that erratic teenage behavior was due to a sudden surge in hormones, but modern neuroscience shows us that this isn't true. The Teenage Brain is a journey through the new discoveries that show us exactly what happens to the brain in this crucial period, how it dictates teenagers behavior and how the experiences of our teenage years are what shape our attitudes and often our happiness in later life. Many of our ideas about our growing brains are completely re-written. They don't stop developing at the end of our teens-they keep adapting until we are in our mid-twenties. They are wired back to front, with the most important parts, the parts that we associate with good judgment, concentration, organization and emotional and behavioral control being connected last of all. The Teenage brain is a powerful animal primed for learning, but this creates problems. Addiction is a form of learning and Frances Jensen, Professor of Pediatric Neurology at the teaching hospital of Harva
It was a real drudgery to get through this book. Thankfully, it was an audio book so I got through it while driving. It was full of statistics and depressing anecdotes about the dangers our teenagers are facing with very little useful insight to protect them or lead them through those dangers, except for the obvious "talk to your teens" and "stay connected". Not worth the read.
I liked it. I like that it gives me a lot of information and references and studies about the teenage brain. A lot of it was a bit repetitive but maybe it seemed repetitive for me since I do know a lot of brain development. The thing is, the book is directed to parents. I don't have any teenagers but if I did I would have ended up more scared for them and hopeless since the author does a good job 0f informing why teenagers are in such a vulnerable state, so much more prone to risky behavior and mental disorders, etc,etc but not such a good job at telling parents what do do about it or how to help them.
I gave this book only 3 stars because I felt like there was lots of technical repetition that didn’t necessarily add to my understanding, but got in the way. Perhaps if you are more technically minded, you might enjoy that additional information, but I was looking for more basic simple terms. I did enjoy the way the book was set up, where each chapter focused on a different topic, I also found it understandable even with all of the technical talk. I found some valuable insights in the book.
Great and depressing news about the teenage brain. I have four teenagers right now and it has always baffled me as to why we make these kids make so many important decisions when they really don't even have the capacity to make them. She got very medical and very technical at times but generally kept a pretty layman terms dialogue going.
A very good insight to understand how a teen's brain works supported by many scientific data and research, which is more convincing. As a parent, it helps us to understand the reason behind teen's behavior and how to respond in a better way.
This book is very dull and doesn't contain much new information which is surprising, by given how the author states that it is only recently that research has been carried out. Don't bother.
(Audiobook) A very insightful book for parents and teachers on how a teenage brain doesn’t have the cognitive ability to make critical or rational decisions.
