This is, by far, the most mixed bag of these comics that I've read yet.

This book opens with an adventure between Padme and... Jar Jar. Look, why is Jar Jar still in any SW content?? You can just leave him out! No one will care! Do kids even like him? I really can't imagine they do! This isn't the worst quest you could have with these two - the comic is titled "Rangers of the Lost Gundark" - but it's just so pointless.

So, as you can imagine, my expectations were quite low for comic number two. But I was pleasantly surprised to see that this one featured Rex and Obi-Wan - an absolutely fantastic combo. I'll love anything with Rex, and given how he's so often working with Anakin it's great to see him at Obi-Wan's side for a change. And this comic has the lovely added bonus of a battle droid who gets damaged in the fight, develops a conscience, and joins forces with Rex. Unsurprisingly, Rex is unwilling to let his new teammate be taken out of commission! This story is so heart-touching and I loved it.

The next one, featuring Anakin and Yoda, is pretty good too. It's about the two of them on a mission following rumors of an invisible being, with a secret being kept on the planet. The story is just genuinely very sweet, and I loved how Anakin was able to save the day. The last line is great.

The last two stories in here are those "Tales from Wild Space" ones that are linked to the The Snare series, where they're always short but not usually too bad. The first one is pretty awful, though. It's just about a battle droid encountering a dangerous colorful planet and that's it. The second one is about Barriss, sent on a mission by Luminara, which I was excited for. The plot itself isn't bad, but the arrangement of the panels made it genuinely a bit confusing to read the story.

3.75/5 stars here - the Rex one was the best by far.

Dull Clone Wars stories. Padme and Jar-Jar search for an object in an Indiana Jones rip-off. Obi-Wan and Rex team up with a rebellious droid trooper. Anakin and Yoda save some invisible aliens. Tales from Wild Space...happen. Nothing exciting or memorable in Defend the Republic!, despite the exclamation point in the title.

A solid round of prequel-era stories. I particularly thought Cavan Scott’s stories were the best in this collection.

All Clone Wars–era stories, except one story about Padme and Jar Jar ("Raiders of the Lost Gundark"), and the frame stories of Emil and the droids in Wild Space. Nothing in this volume interested me very much.

Five stories focusing on the era of the Prequels and aimed at younger readers.
This book features iconic Star Wars characters such as Queen Amidala, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, Rex, Yoda, Barriss Offee and (ugh) Jar Jar Binks.

Very often stories aimed at younger readers can actually have a surprising amount of depth and subtlety to them or can be enough fun that they transcend their intended audience and hold appeal for everyone. This is not one of those times.
The stories on offer here are short, pointless and puerile, leaning more into goofy humour than action-adventure.

The one exception is 'Roger Roger' by Cavan Scott, which sees Obi-Wan and Rex befriending a malfunctioning Battle Droid, who becomes a surprisingly compelling character in a very short space of time. The artwork, by Mauricet, is also far better than anything else on offer in this book.
In fact, this single story is the only reason I've rated this book as a two out-of-five instead of a one.

Derek Charm's art is more functional than anything else, but in the first story there's a page layout that is brilliant- Padme and Jar Jar are descending into a cavern and Charm uses the rooms in the cavern as they descend as panels, with closeups of the two characters. In between the panels, he draws them small again as you see them hop down to the next level or shimmy down a rope. The art functions perfectly both sequentially and geographically. It's really fantastic. Maricet's art in "Roger Roger" is quite good, as is Nick Brokenshire's in "The Big March," a really fun story with GREAT art. You know, maybe this volume warrants 4 stars. Let's do it!

I love that these stories were set in the Clone Wars. I am loving what IDW is putting out and how different it is from Marvel. These are great comics for kids to get into Star Wars with and great for Star Wars enthusiasts that want some easy reading. These comics are a lot of fun and have some great short stories in them that expand the Star Wars universe in fun, digestible ways.

A fun, short little comic. The one with Bats the Battle Droid was my personal favorite, and gave me a good laugh. The rest were kinda meh, but they were pleasant to read and the art was good.

Not the strongest of the adventures but I’ll never say no to more Obi-Wan

This trio of stories are set during the Clone Wars.

Yoda and Anakin Skywalker defend a group of refugees from Separatist droids on mission from Count Dooku. Queen Amadala is tasked to repay Gungan leader Boss Nass for his role in the siege of Naboo to assist Jar Jar Binks in a treasure hunt. Finally, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Clone trooper, Captain Rex are woefully outnumbered by droids. The odds do not look in their favor. But their luck changes when a malfunctioning clanker swears allegiance to the Republic and starts blasting away its fellow droids!

All three stories were very, very good. I thought the artwork of the Amadala and Jar Jar story was the best. It reminded me of those gags drawn by Sergio Aragones when you see an archaeologist digging through the ground and you see all these treasures that he's just missing out on. Some panels were like that in this story and I thought it was great.

The best written story was the Obi-Wan story about the droid that switched sides. I'd really like to read more stories about that character and I kinda hope he survived the Clone Wars and onslaught of the Emperor as the Sith lord attempted to purge any and all remnants of the Republic.

Despite 3 main stories, this volume only carries 2 Wild Space back-up stories. One tale is about another clanker that had quite a run of bad luck. The other story is about the apprentice of Jedi master Luminara Unduli, sent on the quest of finding an ancient Jedi text. Both were good reads but just not that memorable.

3 short stories that take place during the Clone Wars, plus two bonus Tales from Wild Space stories.

1) Raider of the Lost Gundai: Padme and Jar-jar go on a treasure hunt for Boss Nass.
2) Roger Roger. General Kenobi & Captain Dex are helped by a battle droid with a conscience.
3) Hide and Seek. Yoda helps Anakin on a solo mission to find the secret of Ketta.
4) Tales from Wild Space: The Big March. An adventure told by Crater about the lost droid Q5-7070 during the Clone Wars.
5) Tales from Wild Space: The Journey. A story told by Master Emil about a young padawan sent on a dangerous mission.

This book contained some Clone War era stories that are geared more towards a younger audience. If you ever take a look at my Read shelf, you will quickly be able to see that I'm a Star Wars addict and I don't care how old I am when coming to these stories. I enjoyed the stories for the most part except for the one with Jar Jar which was a story based loosely off of the Raiders of the Lost Arc. The artist did do something cool in that story though with the panels being separated through an ant farm kind of view of the cave system. Not sure how to explain it but I thought it was neat.

An okay set of stories here, though maybe I am just a sucker for prequel-era content. I did enjoy the Anakin and Yoda story in this. The adventures series really suffers from its anthology format, in my opinion. I understand the appeal to have an all-ages line, as well as stories that cover a wide range of iconic characters, but they stories never quite satisfy in my opinion.

Fun Star Wars stories set in the era of the Prequels. A couple of the tales, especially one featuring Obi-Wan and Rex, would have made fine episodes of the Clone Wars animated series.

Cute and ridiculous but with a few gems scattered throughout. Gundark. Droids are inedible. It's journey and not the destination that counts.

I have a negative presentiment about this.
