Lord of the Rings + Breaking Bad + The Sopranos = Skulduggery
The best part of being a human is everyone constantly underestimates you, and that means they never see it coming when your dagger plunges into their heart.
Our business is growing, but so is our list of enemies. Dwarven gangsters? The Assassins Guild? The commander of the Elven Guard?
Yup, they are all problems for us as we expand our criminal operation throughout the realm, and we gotta get rid of ‘em all if we’re going to make mountains of gold.
This series has a great setting, some really good side characters and worldbuilding, along with an intriguing overarching story.
And those things are 100% carrying this series so far - they definitely make it worth reading, hence giving it 4* - because the main characters are floundering in shallow water and protected by the thickest plot armour/convenience I've read in a long time.
Seriously, by the end of this book at least 3 characters should be dead from terribly thought out plans if not for the protection of the author, and that's coming from someone who doesn't like authors killing off characters.
Numbers seem to be Jacobs kryptonite in this one, with two noticeable head scratchers. The first is when the Theatre reopens and a little over 50% of capacity is apparently near sold out.
The second is when it comes to Wade buying a new building/business. At first Wade wants 250 gold, then asks for 2500 the next day. Cimarra gives him 3000 in two bags, each one carrying 1500. Later on during the negotiations for the building, Wade thinks 800 gold is too high, but then a couple of paragraphs later it's 8000, then back to 800. When Wade hands over one of the bags, the contents is down to 150 pieces.
Now you may be thinking - as I did at first - it's just a typo where Jacobs has accidentally added an extra zero in a multiple places, but no, because he uses both 'Hundred' and 'Thousand' as well as digits. Consistency - or lack thereof - is my biggest, long-running issue with Patreon/rapid-release authors, but this is a whole new level of not paying attention to what you're writing.
My only other issue is the same as with the two previous books, and that's how often characters cut each other off and sneer. If someone cut me off and sneered at me as much as characters do to each other in this series there'd be violence.
And we're only on book 3. I don't know who told Jacobs it was a clever dialog choice, but they needed to be tarred and feathered.
This is a great addition to the series, but not as action-packed as the last book. That’s ok, because in this book we get down and gritty with the fallout from the last book. We also get some great character progression, as well as new characters and a deeper plot, and a very interesting ending. Consider this the clutch and shift for the next leg of the race. Still very intriguing and fascinating. Definitely recommended (14+)
Book three is a good installment to the series. More of the same; however, the characters grow and expand a little more. The new addition, Ava, plays a big roll in the storyline. Plenty of action, the relationships need a little work, not adult situations, but more depth and history, in my opinion. Lots of potential in the area of politics and organized crime. Overall, the story is still quite good.
The characters have been great, flawed, driven, and passionate. The hero’s journey has been set while the harem grows and I want to see the end. I want to know if the races and guilds can freely hate each other equally. I want to know if the hero’s get to love and live less unhappily ever after. I hope to be able to read book four and beyond. Thanks
I generally enjoy this series, but there is a lot of filler dialog and detail that is not entertaining nor adds value. I hadn’t experienced it previously in the series. Skimmed the last half of the book, slowing in a few chapters. Hoping the next one isn’t so rushed.
It's a great read, but saying you won't start the next one until this one hits X reviews disappoints me. I don't know if it's because of what happened to arena or what but makes me wonder if I should read someone else for awhile to see if this gets a new book instead of starting sellsword
I love this series. It’s as smooth as a nice glass of good whiskey. The characters feel so real. And I can read this series without enjoying a nice drink to go with such a dam good book.
Another great story from Mr Jacobs.a lot happening finally Penny and Wade get together, finally the Theatre reopened ,finally the distillery leaves the stable.Add in murders and bodies 🔥in flames.Well worthy of five stars.Thank you Mr jacobs
The writer is telling an interesting story and his characters are deeper than most in this type of literature. On the negative side; the writer does waste too much time in his graphic descriptions of sex with the main character and his slowly growing harem.
Great series. Love the plot angles. Doesn’t get too complicated and all of a sudden reveals their master plan. You are with the characters the entire time as they focus on problems and solve them together. Non-stop drama and action
Another excellent addition to this series! I like the set up of these books, start off with a slow build and a fast ending. Looking forward to the next book in this series!
This is a first class read chronicling the murders, the alliances, the setbacks and the coming together of the "family" carving out a primal empire under the noses of the Elves dictatorship. Sex scenes are too long
Couldn't put the book down. It was better than the last book. I love how all of the characters are evolving. Please since you left me hanging please finish the next book.
I love the world that Logan has built. I love the characters and how they interact and have depth. I am curious where the tale is going and cannot wait for The next one.
Wade has to expand, and his enemies are closing in. Fortunately he has a crew of dedicated friends to help him carry out the plans he has made, and a little aid from his magical keys. A good read.
This series just keeps getting better and better with every book. Wade and his merry band of misfits add Ann adds in to the team dodge elves and now has a crazy made in the mix. If you enjoy action, adventure and steamy sex you'll love this series.
This book had the best action sequences compared to previous 2 . Loved this one as the struggle, fight and empire of the Whisky Maker is growing. Newly added character Eva was astounding throughout and will have major role in next book I reckon. Its a must read.
