Knight and Culverhouse are back for another case. There have been a series of armed robberies at local gas stations ... all owned by the same man. And then there's the robbery at a jewelry store and the elderly owner is killed.

They have a suspect in mind ... a man they've been trying to put him away for years ... but he continually stays two steps ahead of them at all times.

But then the detectives find a link .... to someone very close to home. And the closer they get, the more danger they ...and their loved ones ... face.

Although fifth in the series, this is easily read as a stand alone. I've enjoyed how the characters relate to each other. Culverhouse is brash, stubborn, but dedicated to his job and determined that justice will prevail. Knight is gentler, more apt to want to do things in a more favorable manner. Culverhouse and his teenage daughter are trying to learn how to live and love each other ... but she sure isn't helping him out.

This is a fast read, an engaging look at how these particular police go about investigating crime. The story premise is a good one .. with a surprising ending.

Many thanks to the author for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

This is book 9 in the Knight and Culverhouse series. Although I have read and loved many of Adam Croft's books this is the first one in this series I have read so I can confirm it works perfectly as stand-alone.

All is well in Mildenheath it is just a normal night until a BMW rolls up and robs a Petrol station. As the police are called to the scene another is raided and then a third. All are owned by the same man. When a woman dies in a raid on a Jewellers shop it becomes clear that the robbers have inside information. Knight and Culverhouse start investigating but they uncover more than they bargained for.

Culverhouse is a plain speaking man he tells it how it is which adds a bit of humour. Currently he is fighting to keep his team in Mildenheath while the big bosses want it incorporating into the main city team. Under pressure to get results Culverhouse could do without the personal problems as he tries to juggle his job with building a relationship with his estranged teenage daughter. As the investigation progresses the clues point towards a criminal that Culverhouse has been trying, and failing, to convict for many years which raises the question 'who is feeding him info to enable him to stay 1 step ahead?'

Knight is his colleague and is the voice of reason to offset Culverhouse's tendency to act first and think later. She also has personal stuff going on.

This is a very gripping book I found myself reading 'just one more chapter'. I loved how we got involved in the nitty gritty of detective work and also saw the personal side to the characters. It all make for a very enjoyable read and I am looking forward to more from this author.

Many thanks to the author, Adam Croft for the advance digital copy of this book. This is my unbiased review.

This is the 9th book in the very popular Knight & Culverhouse series, although it is my first meeting with the pair of detectives from Mildenheath CID. This team is almost unique in that they should have been moved into the large county headquarters at Milton House a long time ago, but due to having a staunch supporter in the form of Chief Constable Charles Hawes, DCI Jack Culverhouse operates under a high level of autonomy which suits him and his team perfectly. That team, consisting of DS Wendy Knight (his right hand detective), DS's Frank Vine and Steve Wing and DC Debbie Weston, have all worked together for a number of years with a high level of trust and loyalty. Their newest recruit DC Ryan Mackenzie is starting to fit in well. After all, they do seem to get more than their fair share of major crime in the town to deal with. This book starts with a series of armed robberies being carried out on local petrol stations. It looks like the robbers have received inside information, and one suspect is quickly identified but the detectives have absolutely no evidence or proof. Alarmingly events step up a gear when another armed robbery is carried out, this time on an independent jeweller's shop where the elderly lady owner fights back and ends up dead as a result. Certain that once again the gang received help, the focus now turns on themselves as they realise the mole could be a police officer from their station. Grudgingly Culverhouse is forced to hand things over to Professional Standards but he can't help trying to investigate as well. When it looks like an old nemesis of his might be involved he is determined to get to the truth. With a new ambitious PCC breathing down all their necks, the pressure is really on to prove their worth and secure the future of Mildenheath CID. Culverhouse is very old school in his job, and Knight seems very laid back, particularly as she is more settled in her home life with Xav, although she does occasionally rein her boss in when he gets a bit too much. Culverhouse does swear a lot, even at his own staff. I think a number of readers might find that there are too many "f" and "c" words for their liking (I certainly couldn't give this to my mother!). But at home, trying to care for his troubled teenage daughter after her varied life with his ex-wife, and with the steadying influence of his school headmistress girlfriend, we see a softer side to him, and he is actually starting to get it right! Overall a very enjoyable police procedural with a good, albeit shocking, ending. It has certainly made me want to read the rest of the series and catch up on their previous adventures. 4.5*

When I read the synopsis for this latest in the Knight & Culverhouse series I knew I wanted to read it. To be fair the synopsis for all the books in this series have been good, which is why I have bought several of them. In Plain Sight, however, is the first I have read from the series and it is book #9! So I can honestly say that yes it does work well as a stand-alone, and if like me you can’t seem to read in order, it is also a great way of sparking a definite interest to read the series from the beginning.

So, the synopsis does give the basic details for the storyline of this book and it has a gritty feel to it, this is definitely continued into and throughout the story. As the case weaves its way through the streets of Mildenheath, I was introduced to various characters. There are those in the CID team, the odd local criminal as well as a few business owners and employees. Along with these, there are also those closest to Knight and Culnerhouse themselves.

The story deals with the police work and investigation dealing with the robberies of three petrol stations and also the death of a business owner. But it also combines the family and outside work lives of the two lead detectives. These personal stories add a good human interest aspect as it deals with things that go on at home, that do cause additional tension that does have a slight overflow into the work-life.

There are various things I really enjoyed about the story. The crimes are realistic and well laid out with details and plots that are logical but not straight-forward. The personal stories have really interested me as even though I could easily follow them, there is obviously more that has previously happened that makes me want to read the earlier books to catch up. This is especially the case with Culverhouse and his daughter Emily, and also with Knight and her new relationship.

I also liked how the author uses the recent PCC (Police and Crime Commissioner) aspect within his story. The use of an overseer with political leanings adds for really good reading and explosive interactions between the Commissioner and Culverhouse.

AS this is a well-established series, the dynamics between the various member of the CID team is obvious. The author uses well-developed characters and uses them to good effect. Culverhouse is an old school copper who occasionally strays into the greyer aspects of policing and Knight is the one who tries to rein him in and steer him in the right direction with her voice of reason, not always successfully either!

This was a fabulous read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is a gritty, relevant police procedural with wonderful characters and a great storyline. An ideal read for crime fans and one I would definitely recommend.

am really enjoying Adam Croft’s work. This is part of his hugely popular Knight and Culverhouse series (although works well as a stand-alone too).

Knight and Culverhouse make a great partnership in fighting crime. They are also however quite different from each other. You would certainly know where you are with Culverhouse who tells it how it is. Knight is more the voice of reason in this partnership.

This book is gripping and so well written and is available to buy now. It definitely is worth adding to your crime collection.

Mildenheath is a place having a fairly ordinary day until a BMW pulls up to a petrol station and robs it and then more are robbed as security is rather lax around them and CCTV isn’t exactly helpful. A woman then dies in a jewellers that is raided. Someone has insider information, but the question is by whom and is the person from inside their own police station or not. Makes you think and wonder.
The pace is excellent and makes you want to know what happens next.

There’s more to this book though than the crimes for readers to also get their teeth into. Culverhouse is also under pressure to get results, but there are personal issues to handle too. It really works when there is a crime to solve, but also how readers can really get to know the characters personal lives too. Adam Croft balances it all very well to tell a great layered story.

There’s also the future of Mildenheath CID to consider too as it is at stake. There were plans to have the unit moved to a larger main city team, but had so far managed to not be sucked up and incorporated into this. So, there’s a fight on their hands for the team to stay as they are. This is a clever bit of the story as it happens so often these days with smaller forces being merged into larger ones, whether they want to be or not and it is depicted well here.

Culverhouse could do without the personal problems at this moment in time of trying to work out how to build a relationship with his estranged teenage daughter, as he is also under pressure to get results at work.

There are twists and turns to really keep readers involved and care about how it’s going to end.

I highly recommend this book, even if you haven’t read anything by Adam Croft before, this is one to read. He has written several other books in this series and has even started a new series, so there’s plenty to choose from after you’ve tried out In Plain Sight.

* I give thanks to Joanne and Adam Croft for inviting me to review for you again. It’s an absolute pleasure to do so and I thank you both for sending me a digital copy of In Plain Sight.

A book I didn’t want to let go of until I got to the end. Petrol stations are being robbed at gun- point by masked men. There are no working cameras and security is rather lax to say the least. When the local jewelers also takes a hit there are more devastating consequences. Jack and Wendy and the team have their hands full and a few suspicions as to what is going on but proving it is quite another matter especially when the future for Mildenheath CID could be at stake. The new PCC is doing everything she can to integrate them and Jack has more than a few choice words. Oooh!!! I loved this. Jack and Wendy are wonderful characters and I found myself laughing at times. They each have a back -story which I always like as long as its well done (which with Adam goes without saying… so why am I??) which gives depth and warmth to their characters without detracting from the plot. This is part of a series but the first Knight and Culverhouse I have read (I need to go find the others pretty soon!) but will happily stand alone. I can;t recommend this enough. It’s a brilliant very well thought out plot, wonderful characters and that je ne sais quois of a quality writer who knows how to get you into the pages and then stay there. Brilliant doesn’t cover it.

It goes without saying that this is yet another excellent novel from Adam Croft. Once more we are plunged into the world of Mildenheath CID and the lives of DCI Jack Culverhouse and DS Wendy Knight. This is such an brilliant series of books that I don’t want them to ever end. This time we see Jack having to start looking closely at his team and try to find whoever has been helping his arch enemy, Gary McGann to stay one step ahead of the police and thus avoid justice for 35 years. There are plenty of twists, turns and red herrings to keep us guessing. In the meantime, Wendy Knight is getting ever more comfortable in her new relationship with Xav and Jack’s relationships with his teenage daughter Emily, and lady friend Chrissie, get both complicated and interesting. At the end of the story we get a slight hint that there will be just as much excitement in the next episode, so I hope it’s not long in coming.

This is another great book by Adam. It is amazing to me how he comes up with new cases to put his detectives through. If you are looking at this book to read and have not read the entire series from book one then STOP and go find book one and start at the beginning. Adam is very good at including backstories in each of his books but to really understand this great line-up of characters you need to start at the beginning. Also, be sure to sign up for Adams's email list. As soon as he is ready to release a new book he will email you and offer you pre-release pricing.

I don't want Jack to ever retire!

Adam has done it yet again with another serious case for Jack and Wendy. His personal life, both in his love life and with his daughter, gets more complicated at the same time and it has left me wanting more, and quickly. I don't like to ever give any of the plot away, but suffice to say, it is a must read and if you are a fan of Adam's books as I am, you will love it, as I have. Highly recommended.

Jack Culverhouse

I felt the ending was abrupt, no final conclusion to the court case, you just have to believe.
Also I thought some of the language unnecessary and the way he talks to the PCC would surely have him severely reprimanded. There was a good story in there but not presented as well as previous ones.

I enjoy these books for late bedtime reading. I started with Book 1 and thought is was ok and the same with Books2&3. Since then I have worked my way through them all. They seem to get better as they progress and the reader gets to know the lives of the main characters and how they weave their way into some of the cases. I think each of the later books is deserving of 4 stars.

Is there a mole in Mildenheath?

Once again Adam Croft has written a great Knight and Culverhouse story, keeping me turning the pages to the end. Touching moments for both of them regarding their private lives too. Will not tire of saying this would be great as a TV series! Hopefully there’ll be a tenth book 🤞.

Another triumph

The ninth book in the series and we get more of Jack and Wendy away from their work. They are a good team.

Shame about the mole. The two fat lazy sergeants remind me of the two in Brooklyn 99!

Language

The storyline was very good as usual, but was very disappointed and very surprised at the use of strong swear words (f*** and c***) which I find totally unnecessary.
