Note to self: don’t sleep with your flatmate after a curry and three bottles of wine… especially if he’s secretly in love with you and wants you to meet his mum.
Cat Parsons is on the run. She doesn’t do relationships. After ten years of singlehood even the hint of the ‘L’ word is enough to get Cat packing her bags and booking herself onto a two-week holiday.
A European bus tour feels like a stroke of genius to dodge awkward conversations at home. But little does Cat realise that the first stop will be Paris, the city of love itself.
Joined by new friends, Cat has got two weeks, eight countries and a hell of a lot of wine ahead of her. As they discover hidden treasures and the camaraderie of life on the road, will Cat find a new way of looking at love?

I’m a writer, traveller and hopeful romantic with a lengthy bucket list, and many of my travel adventures have found homes in my novels. I’m also an avid reader, a film buff, a wine lover and a coffee snob.
I am currently on a one-year sabbatical, living and writing across the world, with my partner, Ben, who I met while travelling in Greece. Was so fun taking a whistle stop tour of Europe right from the comfort of my own living room while social distancing. Sandy Barker’s descriptive writing made me feel as though I was right there with Cat and crew on this adventure. Cat makes a huge mistake and sleeps with her roommate, who consequently is in love with her. Rather than facing the situation she decides to book herself a two week trip on a bus/coach trip around Europe. While on the trip she makes lots of new friends including her bus Bestie Louise. The first stop on the trip is Paris where Cat runs into her long lost friend John Luc. And of course he is absolutely gorgeous and nice and smart and oh yeah gorgeous. What follows is an engaging story of fun, friendship, food, and amour.
Parts of this book were a little surreal given current circumstances. I could not help but think when they were visiting the Eiffel Tower in Paris or riding in gondolas in Venice what these places look like right now? I think that is something I really appreciated about this book is that it reminded me of how things once were and how they will once again be. It really was like traveling right along with these characters, all the attractions were so well described. So was the food, I was seriously hungry throughout most of this book. However I must say I would not want to go on this particular bus trip, the sleeping accommodations were less than desirable. The friendships formed however were so fun to read about, and each character brought their own special personality to the story. The romance was sweet and frustrating. Cat had some major commitment issues and there were quite a few times I wasn’t certain that she deserved John Luke. This is a good book to get lost in: travel, romance, friendship, food, fashion, fun.

*** Big thank you to Harper Collins UK for my gifted copy of this book. All opinions are my own. ***
Such a brilliant book! I adore books about travel and food and this had it in tonnes! Really likeable characters that are a pleasure to spend time with. Loved seeing Cat connect with her bus buddies and then watching her meet with someone from her past. Completely captivating, it took me away from the cold February day and transported me to Europe. Such beautiful descriptions of the places visited and food/drink consumed 🍷🥖🧀🥐 The friendships made (and rekindled) were so heartwarming, it was so lovely to spend time on the tour!
What a beautiful story. Just what I needed to read right now. I found myself totally immersed in the characters, and the writing is clever, polished and unputdownable. Much needed escape ❤️
Oh sod this, my last fuck has flown out of the window thanks to the author’s sister commenting on my Amazon review to criticise me for only reading 61% and basically being wrong in my opinion. My opinion still stands and will remain unchanged: I did not like this book or the writing style, and I won’t recommend it or the author, especially after seeing the behaviour I’ve since seen. My review was fair and reasoned and more polite than I could have been and it is for readers, NOT an author or their friends and family members, but apparently I’m the troll, go figure.
********
DNF @ 61%.
Who doesn’t love a trip to Paris, the sights, the atmosphere, the romance and with a pretty cover and the mention of laugh-out-loud humour, I was up for seeing what That Night in Paris held in store. My rating shows all did not go to plan.
You know how you see a place in photos or in movies and you’ve wanted to go there for so long you can’t remember a time when you didn’t, and then you go and it’s way more...well, just more than you could ever have imagined?”
The theory behind this was one I should love, basically an 18-30’s Shearings™ trip across Europe with friendships created and shenanigans had. However in practice that wasn’t the case, reading more travel guide than romance novel, providing none of the suggested laughs whatsoever and centralising around a woman who I couldn’t warm to and who I found immature and annoying along with her forgettable friends.
Meh, I’m okay. I haven’t let loose like that in a long time...”
Sadly nowhere close to the success I was hoping for and with lacking descriptions holding a distinct tell rather than show feel, the author failed to transport me to any of the places visited—something I want and need from a destination romance. And whilst Jean-Luc was a something of a saving grace in bringing the very few and far between slightly better moments to the story, even he wasn’t enough to keep me reading.

If you want a whistle stop tour around part of Europe then this is certainly the book for you. For me it has re-affirmed something I have always suspected I would not enjoy doing a coach tour for myself, if I'm going to fit in multiple cities in one trip, give me a cruise ship to travel by, but not a coach!
However reading about someone else's coach trip starting in Paris, taking in the South of France, Florence, Rome, Switzerland and more over a short space of time is really entertaining.
Especially given Cat had always sworn she would never take this sort of holiday, but books it last minute while fleeing from a love-struck flatmate.
It doesn't take too long for Cat to make some wonderful new friends on this trip and with that we have her bus posse, 4 women all on the trip for different reasons and we get to know them all really well, as what else are you going to do on a coach of hours at end, than talk to people!
The accommodations again would have put me off the trip and Cat didn't seem that impressed with them either, but past that we get wonderful descriptions of each place they visit. There is the echoes of past loves, a blast from the past that becomes rather key,
Let's just say there is a gorgeous Frenchman that really affects Cat's "lady bits" (the author's words not mine, and was a phrase used rather a lot), but the chemistry between them is amazing even if Cat is trying to delude herself.
Some of the cities we get more from than others, but I'd say we get a decent feel for each place, especially the ones where Cat and her bus bestie Lou decided to fit in as much as humanly possibly in a tiny amount of time.
I really enjoyed this story, and love Sandy Barker's way of writing about different places. I'm already keen to see what the author will write next.
Thank you to One More Chapter and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
So happy to have an advanced copy of this one from Netgalley. Absolutely loved this gorgeous book, set in a beautiful place with characters that are easy to love and a superb plot. I have devoured this book in just one sitting ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Feel the Summer in this delicious contemporary romance. Enjoyable and romantic, it features great European locations and a wonderful cast of new friends and friendships along the way.
I received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Cat books a whirlwind European holiday after she makes things awkward by sleeping with a roommate - and then more awkwardness ensues when she runs into an old friend in Paris!
This has all the stuff I loved from the first book - travel, fun travel buddies (my shy, introverted self lives vicariously through Barker's characters!) and romantic dilemmas. But I think I enjoyed this one even more because the romance wasn't split two ways and there was a lovely amount of pining mixed in with denial. Also Jean-Luc was such a scene-stealer. xD A great beach read (or for when you want to pretend you're on a beach lol) for lovers of chicklit.
As a staunch Francophile, I am always immediately tempted by books set at least partially in France, and this book really did not disappoint. Admittedly the time spent in France was limited but as a whistle-stop coach tour, that was what I expected.
The accommodation left a lot to be desired, and although I would never go on another coach trip in my life, the tourist side of the story appealed even though the travel did not. To be fair, I went on a coach trip when I was 19 to Italy, which left me with a broken nose (fell down a flight of stairs on the ferry on the way back, totally sober too!), and badly blistered shoulders (from swimming in an Italian lake), and I have to say it put me off coach trips for life. Having said all that, as an armchair reader stuck at home at the moment, I loved the travel, and found the descriptions so vivid that I could picture every beautiful location.
When Cat literally bumps into her old friend Jean-Luc in Paris it seemed like such a serendipitous moment. and wow, what a sexy Frenchman! Their romance was sheer perfection, and a joy to read. However, I do think this book was more about friendships and the guidance friends can give. Cat relied on her new travel friends to point her in the right direction, and I loved that each of her new friends brought a new and very different dimension to their friendship.
I was new to Sandy Barker’s books, having found her on Twitter first, but she really did not disappoint with this book which is book two in the series, but works perfectly as a standalone. I will definitely be seeking out book one, and waiting impatiently for book three!
I also really enjoyed the video chats Cat had with her sister who had previously been a guide on the coach tour. It really gave a useful insight into the highs and lows of coach tours, not that it changed my mind about them!
Everyone on board for a whistle stop coach tour of Europe in this escapist contemporary romance!
Well, I'd never considered doing a coach tour before and I have to say I don't think I'll do one any time soon after reading this! The accommodations on route left much to be desired but definitely added to the interactions of the characters and drama of the story. Cat Parsons has always said she'd never go on a holiday like this but it seems like the perfect getaway after she discovered her flatmate is secretly in love with her. The eclectic mix of folk on the tour, their interactions, attitudes and actions are key to the story as new friendships and supporters develop. The first stop is in Paris and it is here that she accidentally encounters someone she reluctantly broke contact with more than a decade ago. As the journey takes them to some iconic places around Europe, will Cat learn to let love have a chance instead of shying away?
The characters on the coach each have their own backstory which impacts on their behaviours and interactions. This is a story of romantic places, hurried visits, new friendships and long standing romance rekindled.
I requested and was gifted a copy of this book via NetGalley and this is my honest review after choosing to take the journey with Cat and visit the fabulous cities and sights with her and her coach buddies. I actually read it in March 2020, just after Italy had imposed the travel restrictions for Coronavirus, when this sort of tour would not have been possible - let's hope it all clears up soon and good luck to anyone on such a coach tour in future!
I love all books Paris and this one did not disappoint. It follows Cat, who slept with her flat mate and declared his love, runs away on a bus tour across Europe to get away from the situation. Along the way, she meets 3 women who become close friends. As they are in Paris, she runs into her old best friend from grade school in Australia. Her complicated relationship past complicates things to say the least. This book was incredible. The countries they visited, the adventures they went on, all the wine, was a delight to read! This was my first book from this author and am looking forward to reading her others. What a fantastic read!
Thank you to #netgalley for the ARC! My review is of my own opinion.
I received a copy of this story from NetGalley for a honest review.
That Night in Paris by Sandy Barker is about Cat who has joined a European Tour at the last minute to escape her apartment and the roommate she slept with. This story was a true escape, I actually felt like I was a part of tour that Cat was on. On this unexpected holiday Cat meets three new friends who are on the tour for their own reasons. Not only was this book engaging but it actually made me want to book a European tour of my own, so I could have some adventures and see these sites for myself. Along the way Cat meets an old friend unexpectedly that turns into a romance. At one point I felt very frustrated with Cat but it all worked out in the end and I was so happy I read this book. I can't help but wonder if the other Bus Besties will get their own stories.
I enjoyed the story. Cat is so quirky. I love her thoughts. Also Jean Luc - a swoon worthy man worthy of being the best best book boyfriend. He’s pretty perfect. The leaning his forehead against hers. The surprising her. This book makes me have holiday envy. It made me want to go to Paris and Italy.
This was my first book by this author and simply brilliant I will be reading more by this author. Was brilliant and full of new friendships and seeing old friends with some love and plenty of travel with plenty to drink and eat and was lovely to travel around the different countries and you filet you were with them. Cat has been out of love for years and one night she drinks a lit and ends up sleeping with her flat mate and he's fallen for her but she hasn't so she packs her bags and goes on the run. She books a two week holiday on a coach tour and can't wait to visit different countries. She first of all goes to Paris which is the country of love and she meets up with an old friend and will her idea of romance change. She makes wonderful new friends and enjoys travelling through so many different countries and has plenty of food and wine with it. Will she finish the tour or will she head back to Paris to find an old friend again. Perfect read.
I enjoyed the first book in this series, One Summer in Santorini, but this one was better. I loved the tour aspect, and the descriptions of the different places. I really want to go to Lauterbrunnen now! The romance was fine, and not as cringy as most (I'm not a huge fan of romances in general). But for me, the best part was the relationship between Cat and her "bus besties", especially Lou. As others have said, Cat begins the trio as somewhat self-obsessed, but she fully realizes this and really grows by the end. A satisfying escapist read, full of heartfelt and touching moments, and just the kind of thing we all need right now.
I loved practically everything about this book and I was hooked from about five minutes in!! I laughed and I cried so many times while reading I lost count.
Cat made a huge mistake by sleeping with her flat mate and then he declared his love for her and started making puppy dog eyes at her over breakfast. So she booked herself on a two week coach tour seeing the sights in Europe. On the coach she meets a number of other people travelling on their own (each with their own reasons for doing so) - this group fast become close friends with the lovely Lou becoming Cat’s ‘bus bestie’.
The first stop is Paris and here, quite by chance, Cat bumps into her old pen-friend and previously best childhood friend Jean-Luc. However, Jean-Luc has transformed into a heartthrob who plays havoc with Cat’s emotions (and raging hormones!). I could go on and on about the book but I don’t want to ruin it for you.
The descriptions of each of the cities, the scenery, landmarks and the tastes and smells (good and bad ha!) really make the book come to life and have left me wanting to get out and visit them all!
A five star read and I can’t wait to read more from Sandy Barker.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced read copy of this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
That Night in Paris is a fun romance that follows our main character Catherine as she decides last minute to take a bus tour around Europe after sleeping with her flat mate. On the tour she meets 3 other woman who also booked last minute; Louise who is getting a divorce, Jaelee who realized she was in love with her best friend who just got married and Danielle whose best friend did not invite her to her wedding. While at their first stop on Paris, Catherine gets reunited with her best friend from childhood Jean-Luc. What follows is Catherine building friendships with these 3 other women and reconnecting with Jean-Luc all while traveling around Europe.
What I love about this story is that it’s not just your typical romance, it is also a story about the relationships you make in life. Catherine’s friendship with these other women is great to see, none of them tried to put the other’s down, they were all there for each other when needed. This story also felt like a love letter Europe. While the author was describing the places they visit I could visualize myself there and remember my own experiences, to visiting Sainte-Chapelle and getting baguette sandwiches to eat while in Paris. I also enjoyed seeing the growth of the character as she comes to terms with how she is living her life and being resistant to romantic relationships.
I only had a few problems with this books and it was mainly I think formatting issues with my ebook. There was no real break in dialogue and sometimes it was hard to figure out who was speaking. I also am not a huge fan of second chance romances but I enjoyed this one in that it didn’t focus on them in the past just small glimpses.
If you are looking for a great romance with more to it then I highly recommend this one. This book comes out on April 15th. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
What a brilliant book. I loved her last book set in Santorini and now this, I'm sure sandy is following me around the globe. Hahahaha so we begin in the miserable cold weather in London and embark on a European bus tour to eight countries in two weeks. Cat goes alone and shes single but she wants to see the world so signs herself up for it along with a bunch of others. In her early days she falls into the hands of jean luc a good old friend of hers and they plan to meet up in Italy.. cat has found new friends from this trip and having to share rooms can only be fun.. It's a great read, set in Europe on a bus and with funny day trips, being left without a bus, all good fun. A perfect read for those who suffer from the winter blues.
That Night In Paris is a fun, cheeky romantic comedy. Cat Parsons books a last minute European coach tour to escape her London flat after she has a drunken one night stand with her flatmate. While on holidays Cat makes some new friends (her Bus Besties) and rekindles an old friendship. Cat and her friends discover some beautiful cities while enjoying plenty of good food and wine on their travels. After reading this story I really feel like some wine and cheese! This is book #2 in the Holiday Romance series but can be read as a stand alone. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my copy.
Even though it’s not the first book in the series, this is my first book by Sandy Barker and what a fun trip it was!
After a night of bad decisions, Cat Parsons books a fortnight trip through Europe to get away from real life. On the trip she quickly bonds with three other women running away from problems of their own. And then a chance encounter makes Cat question if she can always run from love.
The descriptions of the various locations were done really well. I went on a similar bus tour of Europe myself when I was in my early 20s, and it was fun to relive some of the locations. Tour group hook-ups and other shenanigans were rife on that trip and the one in this book, too. I don’t know if some might find it unrealistic, but my reaction was “Yep, sounds about right.”
I have to admit I was much more interested in the relationships that developed between the four women than the romance, really! Particularly between Cat and “bus bestie” Lou. It was sweet and realistic and I really enjoyed the way it developed. The other two, Jaylee and Dani, were fun though I sometimes couldn’t remember which one of them was which.
Cat is an interesting protagonist. It did take me a while to warm to her, I guess just because we are So. Different. so at first I found it hard to relate. And perhaps I was bothered by the fact that she was a bit self-involved, but as she started to recognise that about herself and change her behaviour, it became easier to get behind her… though I don’t think I ever want to hear the phrase “lady parts” again.
As to the romance, I have to say, I did love Jean-Luc. But I think just a bunch of personal preferences meant I didn’t get wholly into it. The nature of the story meant that the romance played out in a few short encounters over a two week period, where I tend to prefer a slowburn. It’s also a second-chance-at-love romance, which again, is not really my thing.
There’s nothing wrong with either of these tropes! Don’t get me wrong! They’re just not what I generally would seek out. Someone who is really into those will definitely love this book!

I really should have read that blurb more carefully – I was expecting Paris (of course!), and always rather look forward to a visit to the city of love. But this wonderful book took me on a whistle stop tour of Europe, on a coach, with Cat and her new friends – and what tremendous fun it was. The descriptions of every location are so well done that you feel you’ve been there – and in many cases I have, sometimes on a coach tour myself (but with nicer hotels!), and I really did feel I’d been given the opportunity to return albeit from the comfort of my armchair. Or actually, when I say “armchair”, I read this book on one of those hot April days in the garden – I’d recommend that you do that too, because I can’t think of a better book to have with you when you’re reclining in the sunshine.
It’s much, much more than just a travelogue though – and believe me, some of the places where they found themselves staying have the potential to put you off travelling for life. I really took Cat to my heart – badly hurt in love, making mistake after mistake while trying to make sure she’s never hurt like that again – and her voice, perfectly sustained throughout the book, is just wonderful.
And I loved the portrayal of her new friends too – and I think it’s those friendships and their ups and downs that I’ll remember most about this book. Each of the women is entirely three-dimensional, with their own reasons for being on the trip and really well-drawn backstories – and they all shift at times from being funny and likeable to something entirely other (well, except for her bus bestie Lou maybe – she’s a friend I’d rather like to have too).
Cat also has a great relationship with her sister, with their FaceTime exchanges punctuating the story – and it’s particularly useful that she was once a tour manager for the holiday company, and could manage Cat’s expectations about their destinations and the inadequacies of their accommodation.
The romance at the book’s centre is just one of the most perfect ever – it hinges on one of those chance happenstances in a Paris backstreet, and develops so wonderfully that it made me feel really warm and fuzzy inside. In fact, there’s tremendous warmth in the whole story’s telling – and I thought the many moments of humour were really perfectly judged. It’s nicely balanced too – there are moments of real poignancy, echoes of the past, times when real life raises its head and glowers a little.
Did I mention that Cat is an Aussie living in London? I loved the way that was handled, and the jokes around it – and the fact that the friends are from different places and backgrounds too added some extra texture to the story and its friendships.
This was just such a lovely read – the best of armchair travelling, plenty to entertain, a wonderful romance and a journey back to happiness. Do give it a try – one very happy reader here, and I’m already looking forward to A Sunset in Sydney!
I thought this book was fantastic and finished it in a couple of days as I just wanted to keep reading it. All the characters were interesting and due to the wonderful writing I felt I really knew them.
The thing I really loved about this book, as well as the great storyline regarding Jean-Luc and Cat, was the fact that I felt like I was travelling and visiting the places that Cat was visiting on her coach tour.
I found myself noting the countries I would like to visit and the places to see in those countries based on the wonderful description of all the places. This was pure escapism, especially in the current lockdown situation. I was on that gondola in Venice and wine tasting in St Goar.
The story flowed excellently and I really look forward to reading more of Sandy's work so if you want a book that combines romance, friendships, travel and food and drink this book is for you.
Thank you to One More Chapter.and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book in exchange for an honest review, which is completely my own.
In this book we meet Cat who's headed off on an adventure tour after being told by her flatmate Alex he loves her while she doesn't reciprocate the feeling especially after losing Scott her cheating ex boyfriend.
However as she makes friends with Dani, Lou, Jae on her holiday trip and meets randomly in France, Jean Luc her old childhood friend, sparks fly and this trip suddenly takes a turn for the better.
But as Car realises her feelings she begins to doubt that if their childhood crush can last a lifetime despite the joy they feel now, can get new friends help her find her happiness?
What an adventure this book was I feel like I've been on this holiday with the girl's and witnesses it myself it was such an immersive easy read if you want a lovely romantic read this won't disappoint I especially liked how she gained a girl crew on the holiday too as I feel it added so much drama to the trip in the book!
Many thanks to the publishers for allowing me to review this book for them!
Seriously this book was amazing. It was literally fast speed journey through Europe. No not that book just the trip ;) Running away from her last mistake Cat makes wonderful new friends and meets her past. That past she still has regrets about, the one and only friendship she worshipped the most. Jean-Luc - French, hot and oh so sweet.
Now it's time to right the wrongs and maybe just maybe get a new insight of love.
Peeps this book was truly something else. I was laughing, I was frowning, I was sad and I was happy.
This book is what everyone needs to read right now. An enticing mix of friendship, humour, romance and sightseeing is the perfect escape when you can't go anywhere. The second in the holiday romance series, this follows Cat's travelling adventures around France, Italy and many other European countries in a few weeks. She books the trip on a whim, running from an awkward situation with her London flatmate. A perfect complete story, but the previous book in the series, One Summer in Santorini, is worth reading too, to find out what happens to Cat's sister Sarah.
Cat's impromptu travelling buddies are great characters they add authenticity, humour and poignancy to the story. The sightseeing is fabulous and gives the book depth, vivid imagery and provides atmospheric settings for this story of love and life. The romance is conflicted, gentle and engaging.
I received a copy of this book from the author and One More Chapter in return for an honest review.
Do you ever finish a story and think, “I needed that?”
Yay! *mini fist pump* I’m so glad you agree.
*coughs* (into my elbow – times as they are!)
Sorry, got a bit carried away there...
TNIP had me giggling from the first page and Cat’s story really lifted my spirits. Plus, add in one (helluva) sexy French man and what’s not to love? *shrug/snorts* <- that’s multi-tasking right there, peeps.
I’m a Sandy Barker newbie, but let me tell you, I was instantly drawn in by her writing style and the eclectic cast of characters that she has created. TNIP is an effortless read which I was happy to get lost in.
I felt an immediate kinship with the MC, Cat. She is definitely a sister-from-another-mister thanks to her inner monologue and ‘talking’ lady parts *snorts*. Add in her general aversion to people and I had a bestie for life – whaaa??!
Unlike our Cat, the worst that has ever befallen me after a curry and copious quantities of wine is a bad case of the trotskies (TMI?!). I’ve never felt the need to flee from an over amorous flatmate following a night of questionable decisions (read: activities) *winks*. Especially not on a European bus tour *shudders*.
As my friends will testify, I am a terrible traveller. And the idea of being stuck on a coach for hours on end is my idea of h-e-l-l, no matter the number of awesome destinations. Ugh, I feel bilious (word of the day, anyone!) just thinking about it, lol.
What is it they say? Ah yes, *taps chin* reading gives us a place to go when we have to stay where we are. Never a truer word has been spoken (or written for that matter – especially now). Through the author’s writing I was magically transported to every city Cat and her crew visited. I truly felt I was there with them and was able to share in all their delights as they explored. Repeat after me, Laura; one day, one day!
Along with the laughs, I was surprised (others probably not so much) at how emotive I found Cat’s story. There were a few scenes that really ‘got’ to me. This non-romantic romantic was swooning and sighing with the best of them.
*whispers* This is our secret, right? But I had to share my favourite quote with you all:
“It was as though we’d both been holding our breath and the kiss was letting it go.”
Help! I’m gushing...
*slaps cheek*
Normal service has resumed.
Now to catch up with Sarah’s story. Two words: silver fox. Hehe!
