In Life in the Spirit, Robertson McQuilkin writes, “The Holy Spirit is the source of our spiritual blessing, the administrator and executive officer of our triune God.” So why do we so often neglect the power and presence of the Holy Spirit in our everyday lives? With fresh insights, this book reveals how the church has too often ignored the Spirit's influence and what we must do to get back to our spiritual roots. Foreword by Philip Yancey.
Read this book for a class in my Masters program. First, this book is not Pentecostal. I say that because I know many of the people who will consider buying this book will have that expectation by the title and cover. Second, it is a pretty good read with some interesting concepts (Not Pentecostal or Charismatic concepts) but still good none the less. Also, McQuilkin is a godly man with a great deal of integrity and his testimony of his career and his marriage worth looking into.
The book is nicely laid out, but there is a ton of explanation that never gets explained. A lot of gloss over gifting and such. It also seems like there is a cop-out excuse that if we do not take action, then the Holy Spirit doesn’t work. Just leaves a lot to be further explored, or explained.
McQuilken does a great job of organizing the biblical materials on the Holy Spirit. McQuilken comes from the Keswick movement for which I have a lot of regard if not full compliance. In other words, this is not dry scholasticism but life shaping. In addition to my recommendation of this book I also recommend JI Packer's Keep in Step with the Spirit. The latter is my first recommendation.
