Always Running Scared

Nothing lights a fire under someone like the demons lurking in their closet.

Alex has spent her life running from one bad situation to the next. No matter how hard she tries to clean up her life, trouble seems to find her like a magnet to metal.

But this time, she's determined to leave the terror behind her, this time in the form of her ex-boyfriend. With the bare bones of what she owns and not even a full tank of gas, she hits the road destined for new people, new scenery, and a life she won't ever have to run from.

The first hotel she stops at ends up having something she is very much wanting to run to-- a handsome as sin hotel clerk named Max. He's smart, funny, charming, and super sweet. The longer Alex is around him, the more she sees everything she's ever wanted in his eyes-- comfort, home, a safe haven.

But some demons refuse to stay buried, and her ex-boyfriend is coming back with a vengeance, only now, it's not just her safety on the line.

This is the first book I've read of this author, but won't be my last.
How she writes claims you and brings you into the story she has written.
Alex sure has had back luck with men in her life until she meets Max, Nick and her long lost brother Noah.
She finally does what she needs to do in order to be safe from Josh for the rest of her life.
Can't wait to see what trouble Nick finds himself in.

This is this author’s debut book and I have to admit it was intriguing. The characters were well developed and the storyline was suspenseful. Alex has moved from one bad situation to another and finally feels like she has found her forever home in Texas with her estranged brother. She stays at a hotel for a few days once she gets into town and that’s where she meets Max, the gorgeous hotel clerk with the green eyes. Max is burning the candle at both ends having dropped out of college to take care of his mother but when he meets Alex he has some fire for life again. He knows Alex is keeping secrets but he doesn’t want to push her this early in their “relationship” but he knows he will have to get answers eventually. Just when Alex is finally setting down and letting her guard down her ex shows up and wreaks havoc. Will she be able to protect those she loves and keep them safe?

I loved this book and can’t wait for Nick to get his own story!! The only drawback in this book for me was I didn’t like the repetitiveness of the chapters told from Max and Alex’s POV. I would have read third the chapter be told from one persons point of view and then the next chapter moving on with the story instead of repeating it from the other persons POV. Overall fantastic story for this debut author!!

What a great read! Out of tragedy comes something beautiful. This is the first read by A.L. Millers and I will definitely be back for more. What started off as a sad story of a girl running, turned into one of strength, courage, and love! Sometimes you have to hit rock bottom, to find out how strong you are and what is really out there for you. A.L Millers did a wonderful job expressing all of those emotions in this book. Great job for this new and upcoming author!!

Not my usual sort of read, but an enjoyable one nonetheless.
The story is told from both his and her points of view, so chapters overlap slightly but this doesn't detract from the plot. Alex is running from an abusive relationship and ends up in a hotel near where her estranged brother lives. She meets Max who works at the hotel, and they begin a friendship which develops into more.
A good story which kept me reading, and a sneak peek at the next in the series. Well worth a read!

I really enjoyed this book. It was a great debut novel the characters felt real and normal. I really enjoyed how Max was a nerd at heart that was nice to see and I loves how Alex came across as both vulnerable and strong at the same time. I'm excited to see where this series will go from here.
