The Edge of the Sword #3

In Search of Magic Fire

Rate this book
Lydima is only good at one thing: attracting and entertaining men. From a young age, her beauty drew unwanted attention, and she learned to turn it to her advantage. However, no one seems able to see beyond her outward appearance and love the woman on the inside.

Weary of being used, Lydima accepts Lady Eemya's offer to manage the holding of Freosyd while she is away. Unfortunately, her reputation precedes her, and overcoming prejudices proves challenging. Fever ravages the island, orphaned children cry for help, and a festering evil has far-reaching consequences. Lydima must find the strength and wisdom to deal with dire situations for which she is completely unprepared. Will earning respect as a leader be as hard as learning to value herself? Can she leave the past behind and open her heart to the future?

The Cerecians are concocting even more devious weapons, and Stelan is caught up in a dangerous mission from which he may not return alive. Can he escape Cerecia carrying valuable military secrets, or will his attraction for a beautiful, mysterious spy be his downfall? Peril, intrigue, and romance abound in this third installment of The Edge of the Sword!

Ever since I was a little girl, I have loved to read. One of the first books I remember reading was a Wonder Book version of Cinderella. It was in the reading station in my kindergarten class, and I loved the illustrations. I would pick that book out every time, so my teacher finally removed it from the shelf to force me to expand my horizons. Now I have my own copy.

Another book that influenced me very early on was Richard Scarry’s Busy, Busy World. It told a story of two creative painters who painted a mural of a large sun inside someone’s house. I thought the idea was genius, so I drew a large sunshine on my wall with crayon. It was scrubbed off, but I continued to have a desire to express myself artistically.

In middle school, I enjoyed writing, and my English teacher told me I would write a book someday. I loved to read, sometimes reading late into the night. When I was not reading, I was making up stories in my head for my own amusement, but I never wrote them down. I was more interested in drawing and painting than writing. I have since painted numerous works of art, including some very large outdoor murals. You can see some of them if you do an internet search of Paint by Amber.

Over the years, I have had a lot of trouble with insomnia. I had heard that if you write down your ideas, it will help you to be able to go to sleep. That didn’t help, but I did end up writing some complete novels. Recently, I was diagnosed with narcolepsy, and understanding my sleep patterns, along with scheduling at least one nap during the day, has greatly improved my quality of life. The line between dreaming and wakefulness for me is sometimes blurred, and some of my ideas come straight from my dreams. Others are worked out while I’m lying in bed unable to sleep. It was fun to type them out, and I am planning to continue writing.

My goal as an author is to write the type of books that I would like to read. My favorite genre is fantasy fiction, and I read and write books that tackle difficult issues but resolve themselves into a happy ending. I hope you enjoy my stories and characters as much as I do.

I knew I was going to enjoy another one of these.

I will confess, I got annoyed every time I had to switch back to Stelan and Talia's storyline, only because I was so invested in Yoused and Lydima's relationship. I also felt the whole time the stark difference, with S & T being an intense relationship that got physical lickity split (though not intimate, thanks for that, Amber, I have a wild enough imagination as it is) while Y & L was a slow burn that I just loved. But I also realized at the very end, especially with that fun "deleted scene" that Amber Gabriel knew Talia and Stelan were getting a little ahead of themselves, and I feel much better knowing that their relationship will continue in the next installment. I also think that's a clever way to write, to have a preview of characters who will get more development later on. Also, the wrap up to the Lydima and Yoused storyline was so cute and honestly satisfying, because it allowed for a sense that certain complications wouldn't get in the way. It has been a minute since I read the Warrior Prince of Berush, so I felt like I couldn't entirely remember their story before this, so I would have maybe liked a bit more backstory, but that's also on me for waiting in between reads. All in all, satisfying and more realistic than a lot of other romance plots you see when addressing legitimate challenges.

I loved this book.

This is the first time in the series we’ve had two completely separate storylines - on one side, we follow Stelan, who is kidnapped on his way back to Lyliana and swiftly caught up in a plot of intrigue, uncertain of who to trust as he fights to return home - hopefully with a few Cerecian secrets too.

On the other hand, we follow Lydima, cousin to Lady Eemya. Lydima had a small role in book 2, but here she really, really shines as she struggles to care for Eemya and Darius’ lands, and a slowly swelling group of children in need of love and care.

I really enjoyed this tale. I loved watching Lydima grow in her role, learning how to lead, and to nurture, and, maybe even how to love. Seeing her fall for each of the children and be so attentive and understanding of their needs was such a joy, and the family they create feels so warm and heartening in the midst of the horrors some of the children have to deal with.

As for Stelan, his tale isn’t without struggle either, and some romance along the way! It was such a joy to see two characters get to know each other and still have to deal with a tense, dangerous, life-threatening situation. The stakes are high here, as the Cerecian ‘magic fire’ has the ability to wreak havoc on Berush and Artylia, and learning its secrets could make all the difference…

Once again, Gabriel’s writing is beautiful, and we’re drawn into the lands of Lyliana and Cerecia, with some incredible revelations along the way. The ending in particular is incredibly, incredibly satisfying.

It’s a struggle for me to decide which out of book 3 and 1 is my favourite. And honestly, I’m not entirely sure. Part of me can’t quite let go of book 1, though this one (especially its ending) really gives it a run for its money.

Overall, a real bravo to Gabriel for what she accomplishes in this book (and keep an eye out for the deleted scene at the end of the book).

TW: this story deals with child abuse. I think Gabriel does an incredible job of handling the issue, showing it’s awful effects on the most vulnerable, and the struggle to deal with it. I applaud her skill and tact in covering this issue in the book. It’s done incredibly well and feels so real and scary and affecting.

I received a free copy of this audiobook, and this is my honest opinion. In this book the spotlight hits Lydima. She may have a questionable past, but this brings to light some of her past traumas. One can come to understand her rationale in making her choices, and it only makes you more proud watching her stepping into a new nurturing role as a caretaker. She’s challenged to take on children, and take down a human trafficking site. In keeping with one of the themes of the series, change is possible. After taking a big look inward, there's no limits on what you can accomplish

This is another amazing story in the series The Edge of the Sword. I loved the action. The redemption arc for Lydima is marvelous. I love how she starts taking in children to rescue them from the lot she herself faced as a child.

Talia, kept me guess for a very long time! Was she a good spy or a double agent? The romance that developed between her and Stelan at times was confusing. In the end it worked itself out!

Amber Gabriel has a real gift with words. You should check out all of her stories!

Great book that deals with some grownup issues in a healthy way. May trigger younger or more vulnerable readers, but a good one for parents to read through together with their older kids to discuss life issues. A very compelling story with lovable characters who learn to overcome their struggles during difficult circumstances.

I simply love the way this author focuses on interpersonal relationships. The characters are so deep and their struggles are easy to slip into and experience, even when they are so different from my personal experiences. This author is also incredibly gentle in presenting trauma. It's there. It shapes us, is integral to our reactions, but the way its presented in these novels is gentle and conscientious. Even though this author doesn't shy from the darker side of life, I didn't find triggering any of the scenarios described. That takes some serious skill.

In Search of Magic Fire is the third book in this series, but it can be read as a standalone. Some characters from previous books make an appearance, but the main story focuses on a new set of characters, and I absolutely loved all of them. The dual romance, featuring two couples, was also beautifully portrayed. The slow burn was excellent, as is the way these wonderful, empowering, and supportive relationships are presented. This author provides excellent examples of what a whole range of positive relationships look like, in blatant contradiction to Tolstoy's assertion that Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way. For even happiness is unique to each person, and I love how Gabriel explores that.

I thoroughly enjoyed how the epic overarching plot between stories is expanded in this volume. While each story takes a smaller chunk of the worldbuilding and politics, as a whole, this series is wonderfully epic while still remaining completely low fantasy. The world is different from ours, but could be ours for all the differences. It's a wonderful concept and I absolutely love it.

This book is packed with suspense, physical and emotional suffering, and a passion for justice and healing. For the lovers, threads of romance weave throughout the plot.

When sensuous Lydima declares herself ill-suited for managing a castle and its lands, the young knight Stelan exhorts her before leaving her to the job, “You will rise to the occasion, I am sure. We are all capable of more than we think.”

Amber Gabriel always gets me thinking with her philosophical statements, especially as she works out her ideas through her stories.

One of her themes is the burden caused by alienation from one’s parents through death, disinterest, or separation. Numerous characters deal with this in various ways, including both Lydima and Stelan. Part of their healing centers on discovering and embracing truth.

When his aloof father astounds Stelan with praise and interest, Stelan experiences surprising self-discovery. “His father’s approbation was something he had not known he was missing. It seemed like a great weight had been lifted off his shoulders.”

Though some aspects of the adventure seem improbable—like travelers gathering roots to eat as they press on a journey or a severely wounded soldier overcoming multiple enemy fighters and then doing a tumbling act to avoid being shot by an arrow—this is a fun adventure romance.

Loved this story!

There is a lot going on in In search of Magic Fire, but it was so good! Stelan, Talia, Lydima, the children, and Yoused. Action, adventure, mystery, romance, it's all in there! I couldn't put this book down.
