De mensen die mij kennen buiten deze pagina weten dat ik het krankzinnige idee gekregen heb om een volledige opleiding te volgen tot fotograaf. Daarom zie je hier nu en dan wel zo'n boek passeren. Deze keer viel mijn oog op een boek dat uitgegeven werd bij uitgeverij Lannoo. WorldPressPhoto2020.

De World Press Photo Foundation is opgericht in 1955 door een groep Nederlandse fotografen. Ze organiseerden een internationale wedstrijd om hun werk tentoon te stellen voor een wereldwijd publiek. Al meer dan 60 jaar werken ze als non-profit organisatie, terwijl de wereld rondom hen continu aan het veranderen is. Hun bedoeling is om de wereld de verhalen te tonen die echt de moeite waard zijn.
Het boek World Press Photo 2020 is het nieuwste boek. Daarin werden de winnende foto’s getoond in hun desbetreffende categorie. Deze zijn bijvoorbeeld : milieu , algemeen nieuws, sport, natuur, hard nieuws, portretten, hedendaagse kwesties en lange termijn projecten.
Eerst krijgt men een kort voorwoord te lezen geschreven door Lars Boering, algemeen directeur van de stichting. De pagina’s erna bevatten de inhoudspagina’s waarop men direct kan terugvinden welke categorie op welke pagina begint. Ideaal als je na het lezen nog eens iets wilt herbekijken.
Men krijgt een korte beschrijving te lezen die de achtergrond beschrijft van de foto of fotoreeks. Dit helpt het interpreteren van de foto’s zoals het de bedoeling was van de fotograaf. De foto’s zelf zijn van een zeer mooie duidelijke kwaliteit. Zo zijn ze zeer mooi van kleuren en vooral de foto’s die over de twee pagina’s afgedrukt zijn trekken enorm de aandacht.
Conclusie
Elke foto die opgenomen werd in dit boek roept emoties op bij de kijker. Dit, in combinatie met de tekst, is het een ideaal naslagwerk van verhalen die er echt toe doen.

World Press Photo has an especially nice hit with World Press Photo 2020. This year it’s a classy hardbound, beautifully printed. As always, I have a hard time designating the winners as “the best photos taken in the world.” (p. 3) A few hundred images amongst the 73,996 submitted means simply that winning contains a large element of chance. I have no doubt that these winners could all be thrown out and the next batch would be just as good, and another batch beyond those, and those, and those. Nevertheless, the winners are, of course quite good and the recognition for hard work, courage, and talent is deserved. The judges this year seemed to have an eye for dark & moody scenes. I can’t argue with their taste. And National Geographic really cleaned up.
Another innovation this year is preceding each section with thumbnails and explanations for the winners that follow in large format. I like that as it gave me the background before viewing which, for me, enhanced my appreciation for the photographs. Previous volumes with the captions on the same page seem now to be a distraction. In a few cases, the designers seemed to forget that the gutter swallows important content. This compromises the effectiveness of those double-truck images.
