Leighton Greene

Leighton Greene has been writing stories since she was old enough to hold a pencil. Her first book was a choose-your-own-adventure style book about deciding what to eat for breakfast. It didn't shake the New York Times bestseller list, but she still has a copy of it.

After spending some time writing in academia, fanfiction and corporate reporting, Leighton decided she should probably do what she actually wanted to do, which was to write commercial fiction. So she did. She writes gay romance and, when the mood strikes, erotica as L.J. Greene.

Leighton lives with her partner and her cockatiel on the east coast of Australia.

~5 Stars for the series as a whole ~
~ 4 Stars for Flying Free ~

Flying Free felt like closure. Though I was entirely satisfied with Book 7 as an end point, it was nice to get Xander's perspectives and bring out his past baggage to the light for some much needed cleansing. Xander has come along way from the Xander of before. It's quite captivating how much I felt it throughout this read. It especially resonated the most during the S&M scenes, they have a different feel and exchange. The love is so potent by the end of it that I finally believed Ben when he says you hurt me because you love me . And I mean truly felt it and that's a reflection of some impressive writing skills that Leighton Greene wields.

This has been a memorable read. I must say head the trigger warnings, this series isn't for everyone. Not that any book is really for everyone. But at the end of the day it's S&M, it's explicit and it's consensual but everyone has their comfort zones with such things. Personally I think its fascinating, enlightening and I found it to be respectful towards the BDSM lifestyle.

Highly recommend this series for those who love delving into complicated, messy relationships between two lovable characters that have a lot of evolving and growing to accomplish. Not to forget a thorough insight into S&M.

Annoyingly, my least favorite in the series. Too much time away from the Ben and Xander dynamic -- I really wasn't invested in Xander's past relationships -- and the stalker storyline fizzled. For a series that pushed into some interesting and dark places, this one ended with a whimper.

wtf was up with all the different povs😭 i don’t care about elijah’s pov, but what irritated me the most was byron’s pov😭😭😭 and why was the blind item plotline even there🙄 wish we could’ve just spent more time with xander and ben without all the extras

POSSIBLE TRIGGERS: BDSM, with particular emphasis on sadism & impact play
Xander and Ben are living together on the same side of the country, and working 24/7 on their relationship, but they're still having to deal with their individual rising fame as well as someone threating to expose their personal lives to the public. This one is a bit different from the first two as it's told in multiple and varying points of view. Until this book, the stories have been told from mostly Ben's perspective and I think I really liked that best, but this way we are shown Xander's inferiorities, (yes, he has some), and what he is starting to think about how he shows his love for, and to, Ben. I never thought that he would allow this to happen...but now that it has, I found I really liked seeing it, plus it added so much more of his "human side" to the story.

There were "snippets" of his past, the ways he had been a "bad" Dom and how he had struggled to mature into the person he is today. We were allowed to be present at some of his sessions with his analyst which were also interesting. We were there with him when his past finally came full circle and blended with his present. We got views from some of the other characters that were a bit annoying to begin with, but I started to really appreciate them as they added dimensions that were needed...especially to the character of Byron. Poor Byron, I felt so bad for him and loved how Xander handled what could have been a life damning situation for him. Byron needs an entire book of his own.

This entire story was excellent. It never felt rushed or incomplete, but the last few chapters were REALLY, REALLY good! I admit that I don't understand the need some folks have for the "pain thing", but "to each their own" and it worked well in this series, especially for Xander and Ben. I'm glad that I bought these three books and will search for the other 5 if this is indeed an 8 books series...Amazon only shows it as 3, maybe some are combined.

This is for the entire series. I certainly had problems with the books, but I couldn’t put them down. After all, I read all 8 books in 3 days.

Fitting finale
to brilliant series. Such growth!
Honestly loved it.

The 5 stars is definitely a round up and takes the series as a whole. Watch the triggers , but I highly recommend.

I enjoyed this more than the last book, but it's quite a departure stylistically from the previous, and I don't think that was the right choice for a final book. WAY too much time is dedicated towards flashback-style retellings of Xander's past which I barely care about at all, let alone to read about in that much detail. There are several outsider POV sections which did absolutely nothing for me, and we get Xander's POV, which I actually really wish the author hadn't given us. Their dynamic just... idk, it's shifted a lot from the beginning of the series, and while yes, it's a lot healthier now, I do think it's lost a lot of its edge, and I wish we could have gotten both. Hard to articulate, but while I still enjoy the writing, and there's a lot of stuff to love on paper, many of the author's specific choice just didn't end up working for me in the end, not as much as I wanted them to.

Tags: Contemporary, BDSM, friends to FWB to lovers. Kink and bi-awakening.

OMG, THIS WAS SO GOOD!!! I bought the box set on promo because kinky fun, hell yeah, why not? Little did I know this would be one of the best things I've read in a while. It certainly starts like that: pure fun. Two friends begin a kinky FWB thing, one is an experienced Dom and hardcore sadist, the other is new to everything (kink and bi-awakening). They are both adorable dorks together, and in the beginning there are so many happy and cute vibes and it's such a seemingly healthy dynamic. As the story unfolds and as they get deeper into sadomaquism and D/s, small cracks in the relationship become bigger, and this really becomes a story about the psychological and emotional aspect of kink and about self-awareness. It gets really angsty and dark, especially in book 3. The character growth is so complex and unbelievably good. The journey is really rough and the HEA is hard won, but so worth it. One of my favorite reads of this year. Check CWs.

This book has a lighter feel, and gives us some other perspectives, including more from Xander. It works as closure, as reassurance that Ben and Xander have navigated the depths and are on the right road to making their lives together work. Many of their obstacles as a couple are now external, not internal. They have discovered that a wider friend circle stands them in good stead, when they are too deeply up inside their heads about each other.

Xander is working to spend more time with Ben, and although he's stressed by flying back and forth to New York, their happiness is a sheltering rock for him. We, and Ben, finally get more of Xander's backstory, and a better understanding of triggers that made him react in the past. (And a view of how he really was sometimes a jerk when younger, and why he doesn't like to think back.)

There's more warmth, more love, and a solid HEA to please my romantic heart.

the conclusion

Elijah and Dean start out this final installment with a Ben assessment. Interesting way to start 😬

We finally get chapters with Xander’s POV. He’s sappier than I thought he’d be and I LOVE that. We learn more about his relationship with Adam. He was truly a bad seed.

We learn all about Xander’s past. How he came to know The Doctor and more.

I’m sad this is over because I really loved this couple. The HEA was kind of expected but very true to Xander and Ben.

Series

Already missing Xander and Ben. I have spent three days with them reading the series. When I started the first book I thought what have I done. I had never read a book with two men as the couple. This series has topped all the book’s I have read when I started back to reading books in oct. The journey with them was the most fleshed out in a book I have ever experienced. I’m 71 so that’s saying a lot. Instead of fluffing over the Xander and Ben you can see down to their souls. It’s like seeing a movie in your mind or even line they live next door. Lots of twists and turn along the way. Most series lose the intensity with this many books to read. Not the case with them. It just got better and better. Love love these books. Never would have believed it when I started the very first one. I miss them already

RTC - But in the meantime, what the hell are cookie things?? It's mentioned over and over again, and it's not just a cookie, it's a cookie Thing, sold in cafes in California. It's driving me nuts, what are they? What do they look like? Why are they called cookie things? Are they delicious? I need to know!

What didn’t Xander know about fear? He’d seen it across faces, felt panic flutter in pulse points; he’s loved it, courted it, aroused it and tamed it. And in himself it rose without warning, made him hurt the people he loves. Fear was an intimate companion.

OOOF that was so good. I was definitely worried for a while, because this doesn't quite have the same feel/vibe as the other books. Xander and Ben are now mostly in a great place, but they're having to deal with rising fame and someone making threats to expose their personal lives to the public. At first I wasn't a fan of how this was being told: multiple sections with varying POVs. So far, the series has just been Ben's point of view, and I actually really liked that. The author found ways to show us Xander's interiority and what he thinks and how he shows his love. So I wasn't really expecting or wanting to get Xander's POV. But now that we HAVE gotten it, I really appreciate it. Seeing those snippets of his past, the ways he used to be a bad dom and how he matured into the person he is today, his sessions with his analyst... it was really interesting. And I'm glad that more of his past came circling back in the present; it was fitting that he had to deal with that and close that chapter. We also got POVs from other side characters that at first I was kind of annoyed about, and really did not think were needed, but I ended up loving them. Especially Byron. I so badly want him to get his own book. It really meant a lot that the author didn't forget about him, and he got to have those conversations with the guys.

As the characters were working out stuff that dealt with outside influences, there wasn't as much relationshippy stuff as I'd have wanted. But I'm still really contented with where we left off and the HEA these guys got. The last scene was really good! I'm glad I stuck with this series, even though I was hesitant from the first. Like, I can't deny that I skimmed here and there; pain stuff will just never be totally for me. But this was a beautiful love story. Huge kudos.

Content warnings:

Ben loves it when Xander comes home, because it feels like Ben is coming home, too.

5 stars for this book and 5 stars for the series overall.

This book was an automatic 5 star when I got to the part with Xander’s POV. I *loved* getting inside of Xander’s head, I loved learning more about his past and how it shaped him into who he is on this series, and I just love Xander.

This book also cleared up a lot of the issues I had in previous books:

• I was so sick of orgasming being called some form of “shoot.” (This stops after the novellas, with just a few others sprinkled here and there)

• The editing. The editing in the previous books drove me a little batty. Luckily, in this one it seems to be fixed.

• More understanding of Xander.

• Ben’s immaturity.

One of my favorite things about books is watching characters grow and evolve and I think this series does that perfectly. The understanding that both Xander and Ben gain is not only for each other, but for themselves. Xander had a lot of dragon’s he needed to slay and this book showed a lot of that growth and acceptance of himself and Ben. Ben got a lot of his anger problems under control and figured out how to best deal with them.

I loved this series. So much. I liked the psychology behind kink and why people may like it. I liked the characters. The little group of community members Xander and Ben have around themselves. The Gay Subs Club was endearing and funny (with one exception 😒).

Overall, an amazing series that I think will stick with me for a long time.

I love that we get Xander’s POV and we get to learn about his past. He gets to pull his skeletons out of the closet and put them to bed. Reading his POV during a play scene was really interesting, it doesn’t seem like you get a sadist’s perspective very often

There were some fun side characters in this one. The Gay Subs Club made me laugh and Zee was intriguing - I’d like to read her story

The ending of the story was just so them. Romantic in a sadomasochistic kind of way

This is the perfect ending to one of my favorite series. I don’t often enjoy it when authors write multiple books about the same couple and can easily get bored, but Greene does such a good job developing Ben and Xander that I devoured each book. The kink is important to the story and well written, but it’s not the whole story. This series has a great balance between kink and the growth of Ben and Xander as a couple and as individuals. I’m really sad that it’s over.

What an amazing series

Ms. Greene was a new author to me. I have been craving BDSM stories with great plots and amazing characters lately. This is a great one. I loved Ben and Xander. She really made you feel their pain but also the amazing love these two characters had for each other. I laughed, I cried and boy was it HOT!!!. I highly recommend this book. Enjoy!

At first I was over the moon when I found chapters in Xander's POV and I thought we finally got to see intho his mind and the whole book would be in his POV, but sadly just a few chapter here and there - but i'm not complaining, I LOVED being in Xander's mind.

This book wasn't what I hoped for. It wasn't as dark and intense as the previous ones, and it was mostly about remembering the past and build a trust and love between them that is the strongest ever.

I missed "dark Xander" as much as Ben missed him. This light version who overthought everything he and Ben did was a bit confusing. While I got that he needed this change, I really, really missed the old Xander and his playful mazohicht side.

I still enjoyed reading this book, but it was like just walking while I wanted to run.

I had tiny hopes that the end of the book I can hope for more Xander, but sadly, this was the last of their saga. It was an amazing journey for them and for me too. These couple of days I spent with Xander and Ben were everything. I found a new obsession, a new love (Xander), a new author - and I couldn't be happier.

The ending was cute, romantic and hot. Typical Xander. Loved this series so much.

The worst part was that it ended!

I absolutely devoured this series! Even with book trends progressing into more bdsm friendly content, s/m is a seriously underrepresented portion. And this was done sooo well. I swear I had hot flashes through all four books. I definitely just found a new favorite author!

Loved this series.

This was a little hard-core for me but as the series continued I couldn't get enough of this couple. There was a lot of angst but also a lot of love!

This series of books was really hard to read, to the point that I frequently had to put my Kindle down and take a break from the "story" playing out on the pages. There was just way too fine a line between "sane, safe, and consensual" and what could only be called "abuse" or "mental torture" and while I personally have never been exposed to nor suffered either abuse or mental torture it all just felt way too real. I guess that's the sign of a good writer. Either way I both liked and disliked these books while finding them very disturbing on a visceral level.

I read the whole series in one week end, let me tell you.
I came for the bdsm smut but I stayed for the therapy 😂
Why did I learn so much about Carl Jung ? Like this last book is 20% romance 80% deep philosophical question about Xander shadows.
But I can’t complain because I loved those two with my whole heart and I got to learn so much about them.
The written style is so different from what I usually read and I love the new POVs.
All in all such a lovely surprise I found deep in some TikTok comment.
I will think about Xander and Ben for a long time.

I saw how many books were about this couple and hadn’t felt any connection between them. After book two I didn’t feel invested in them. Something I never do is go from book 2 to halfway through their last book to see whether my feelings had changed. I probably haven’t done this series justice but I still feel like there is no romance, no love which is what I look for in books. It appeared to be all about the kink. I may try another Leighton book sometime in the future.

Flying Free: Rough Love 8

This series or saga has been a roller coaster ride.
Xander and Ben’s relationship has gone through so many ups and downs. Miscommunication, insecurities, drama, fame, living on different coasts, I actually didn’t think they were going to make it! It was a relief to know they had a HEA ending.

So many awesome things in this amazing series conclusion! Chapters from Xander's point-of-view, some looks into his past, and an external subplot with a surprising reveal at the end.

I highly recommend this series to anyone who has a high tolerance for the heat level in this kink, especially when it comes with two truly amazing characters.

Good end to the series

Good end to the series. We saw more about Xander past and made a whole lot more sense how he's today! I mean I love Ben he is the best boyfriend ever and their love is great. Although it could have ended on book 3 to be honest I guess book 4 was just rounding the story to hea instead of hfn

This was more like an extended epilogue. There were also other POV (Elijah, Byron), for which I didn't care so much.
I'm happy my two MCs got their happy ending. This was a great series. I enjoyed a look into more of the relationship stuff as opposed to getting together that I usually read in romance.

Flying Free was a wonderful way to end this series. And although I'm disappointed to know that Ben and Xanders story is over- I'm happy with the way things concluded. The way everything pulled full circle was a nice touch.
