Discover the inspirational poetry of Annie Johnson Flint - a woman born on Christmas Eve 1886, and whose poems have been a source of comfort to millions. Annie was sadly crippled with arthritis for much of her life - but like Fanny Crosby, she didn't let her physical limitations prevent her from leaving an incredible legacy of writing. This varied collection of one hundred poems includes the most well-known - He Giveth More Grace - and reflects an unwavering faith in God's promises through her trials, her belief that He had a plan and purpose for her life, and a delightful appreciation of God’s creation. A special blessing to those who have been recently bereaved or experiencing difficult trials, this collection will also inspire and encourage all believers on their disciple journey, especially those who enjoy the writings of Elisabeth Elliott, Helen Steiner Rice and Amy Carmichael. This book, the first of three volumes of Annie’s poems, includes an abbreviated version of her biography, the full version of which is entitled 'The Making of the Beautiful.' The second volume of poems is entitled ‘God Hath Not Promised’ and the third ‘Grace Sufficient.’
I love these poems. They are such a source of strength and light. I enjoy reading them during quiet times prior to or after meditation. I think this author was very gifted.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Annie Johnson Flint is a powerful writer of spiritual verse - especially of the hymn-like style of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The best poems in this collection are excellent for private devotion and public use in illustrations or recitations. It is evident, and should be acknowledged, that there is a great deal of variation between Ms. Flint’s best work and her less polished pieces. Those who love rhythmic perfection will likely be disappointed, yet an awareness of her own story and struggles causes one to overlook the technical flaws. The poetry is intensely devotional and surprisingly doctrinal at the same time. I recommend this collection for its strengths, and I think all who appreciate both the power of the best work here contained and the underlying sentiments of the whole will not be put off by some of the weaker selections.
Heartfelt words to uplift a weary soul .brought back many fond memories of hymns sung in childhood. I so enjoyed learning of the extent o& her ministry that so profoundly travelled beyond her difficult and small world in which she was forced through physical suffering to triumphantly live.

My new favorite poet/hymn writer. This volume (1 of 3) includes a short biography of Annie’s life.
I’m thankful I listened to this as an audiobook, because I know I will often return to listen again to the sweet, calming words full of truth. I will also likely purchase a hard copy for the sake of copying down quotes and sharing encouragement from it with others.
Some of these poems have been made into hymns and are more well known but all of these are worth reading. Some of them are worthy of special attention. I am sure others will be touched by different poems than I was so I recommend them all. I read, more or less, one-a-day and was blessed by the experience. Generally speaking I am not a "poem guy" but knowing some of her hymns made me interested.
What a fabulous way to start the year. I perhaps found her poetry more meaningful because of shared circumstances (she wrote her poetry from her sickbed), but I think any believer would find comfort and encouragement in her words. There is nothing flashy about her poems--just truth, beautifully told.
I read this book of poems as I was going thru certain trials in my life. It was a very good reminder for me that God gives more grace to those Who trust Him. I really enjoyed how Annie included Scripture verses to back up her poems. I also enjoyed reading the short biography of Annie Johnson Flint at the end of the book.
Really sweet poems, but if you read the narrative at the end of the book, the poems will mean so much more to you. This lady had a hard life yet still managed to glorify God through it all. Inspiring.
Annie's poems lifted my spirits again and again. I could feel the emotions, the ups and downs , the pain, the acceptance, the joy she felt and expressed, through her poems.
I always loved the song He Given More Grace. Learning that Annie fought arthritis valiantly, I have connected deeply with her poems and hymns because of my own pain. Indeed to commit some of these to memory.
Annie Johnson Flint wrote beautiful, reflective poetry that turns the thoughts of the reader to Christ. I really enjoyed reading these slowly, one or two a night.
Very happy I read this book and learned about Annie Johnson Flint. Up until a few weeks ago, I had never heard of her. Thanks for doing such a good job.
I love the way Flint words things. These poems really spoke to me and I especially appreciated that almost every poem had the inspirational scriptures included underneath.
