"In addition to his writing, Stephenson spent more than twenty-five years as a professional book editor, for much of that time with a particular focus on military publishing."
"Stephenson is the former editor of the Military Book Club and the editor of National Geographic's Battlegrounds: Geography and the History of Warfare. He is also the author of Patriot Battles: How the War of Independence Was Fought. He lives in New York City."
Many details that debunk popular mythology about the war--e.g., Paul Revere's ride, how the colonials stood up against the British, lots of info on the use of mercenaries (every European power had them), competence of Hessian troops and British regulars, American generals' sucessful use of militia untrained in classic 18th century tactics. Fascinating details about how terribly American troops suffered at Valley Forge and elsewhere, complicated politics that came close to losing the war due to rivalries and sheer incompetence of politicians and competing factions. Overall how nearly we lost the struggle several times. On balance, how great a leader was Washington, even with his faults--basically he was a quick study and played for high stakes (lots of nerve).
