She's been broken by life. He's always had it easy. Can they trust each other enough to be the fix they both need?

I used to wonder if there was something wrong with me, because there was nothing wrong with me. I'm a happy, well-adjusted, laid-back guy, or so I always thought. The reality, though, is I've been coasting through life, not thinking or feeling, just being.

That is until everything goes wrong, and Emi comes crashing into my life in the worst way possible. Yet for all the drama, angst, and heartache she brings with her, she's also shown me what it means to be human--to feel, love, and hurt. She's taught me what it meant to be alive.

She's so fragile, yet she's also the strongest person I know--a true survivor. She's been to hell and back but wakes up every morning ready to fight another day.

And when tragedy strikes and my perfect world falls apart, she's the one helping me pick up the pieces. Yet each time she needs me to be there for her, she pushes me away.

But I refuse to just walk away. She's taught me that real life isn't easy, and if something's worth wanting, it's worth fighting for.

What do you look for in a contemporary book? Hot main characters? Check. Scary drama that keeps you on the edge of your seat? Check. Characters overcoming adversity to grow and learn. Check. This book has it all and with a lot of tattoos. I’m in love with Spider. Don’t you dare judge me! So he’s fictional. All the best boyfriends are. I licked him. He’s mine now. ❤️

This book turned out to be much more then I anticipated and was flawlessly written in a way that read like a beautiful love song that hits every note perfectly. I loved Spider from the beginning but Emi was harder to connect with but it was obvious while reading the book that it’s on purpose. If you have certain triggers please don’t ignore the warning listed on this book

This book was so intense, it throws you automatically into the fray and you are like WAIT WHAT!?!?!
Even though it was a 2nd book in the series, I did not find myself feeling as if I HAD to read the first to get an idea about the world and the characters.
Would it have been better? Probably.
Was it necessary? No.
There are quite a few secondary characters and it will definitely be an advantage and an even better story after being submerged in the world, but I didn't find that lacking that information impacted the story.

These characters were amazing. With a name like Spider and being a tattoo artist, you would have thought the the guy would have more troubles than he does. He lead a relatively charmed life with nothing major happening to him. Now on the COMPLETELY flip side, Emi has been put through the ringer. When their worlds collide can the one that has known great sorrow help the easy going guy out with a horrible experience? Not only that, but will she be able to let this guy in to be there for her?

I really liked these characters, I connected with Spider immediately, but it was a bit harder with Emi. I understood her reasonings for most of her actions, but not all of them, and that was a little bit to get through. Other than that though, I really liked the plot and how everything unraveled and the epilogue just freaking made my heart explode with happiness! All in all, I give this a solid 4 outta 5 and will be checking out more books in the series!

PS: Thank you to MV Ellis and Wildfire Marketing Solutions for allowing me an advanced copy of the book to read and review honestly!

I have a new love his name is Spider! He just made it to my elevator list. This Norse like, tattooed blond is carefree and fun. A friendly creative artist it’s so easy to visualize his charming smile, a real stand-up guy you can’t help but admire.

Emi! Well my heart broke for Emi. I really felt for this amazing courageous woman. This is one beautifully written book. This author has the ability to take you on a journey of tears and laughs along with some very sensual heated scenes, as there is a lot of love within these pages. (Did I mention how considerate Spider is?) Swoon! I just loved Emi and Spider’s story. Emi had Spider’s attention from the moment they met.

Another standout for me is you also get to really experience the bond of some great treasured friendships with the side characters in this book. How the people that care for you, are there by your side, when you need them the most. Zed is just awesome in this book too; I’m still a huge fan.

This is one very memorable story. I just cried in the epilogue, my heart was so full; it’s been a long time since I closed a book with tears in my eyes.

Spider is a tattoo artist and has always had an easy life. He will be shaken when he meets Emi, a woman that has had it rough her entire life. Emi is determined to not let her past keep her down. They are opposites but their attraction is magnetic. Spider has something happen to shake him up and Emi is there for him. Emi can't let Spider in when she needs him and that frustrates him. Can the couple work things out? Another great read.

Gripping and Intense!

WOW! This story started off with a massive, intense and thrilling beginning. The violent way it started was off the charts and utterly gripping - it will grab you and keep you in its hooks until the end. There is so much action, suspense and intrigue throughout, with one intense and beautiful love story woven within.

The main characters are beautifully written and the author does not hold back with their story. Emi has a very dark and broken past and comes blazing into the story in the midst's of a dark and twisted relationship. She seems to be a timid woman but as we get to know her throughout the story we learn that she is brave, strong and fierce. Her life has not been easy but she is trying to come out from the ashes. Spider is the opposite. He has a great life and a wonderful family. The events that bring these two characters together could break most people, but these two people show us that they are strong and can overcome bad situations. Their fast paced love affair is sweet and beautiful. Spider is very loving and respectful and knows how to make a woman feel wanted and loved. Even though their beginning was chaotic and scary it was like fate had a hand in their future. Their souls were crying out to be together.

Spider and Emi's story was beautiful and very sweet. It was well written and highly entertaining and enjoyable. I loved every second of it. Highly recommend.

I couldn’t put this book down, from the very beginning I was engrossed. This book was heartbreaking, endearing and emotionally charged. I found myself crying, laughing and I wanted to hug some of the characters.

Opposites attract, she’s got an education, he hasn’t, he’s chill, she’s anxious, he’s had an easy life, while she has had to fight... but they compliment each other perfectly.

Spider and Emi’s initial meeting was one they’ll never forget, but never want to reenact. They had chemistry which was off the charts from the moment he set his eyes on her. He was a Norse god who swept her off her feet and protected her. Then she was gone, until one night when Spider ran into her in a bar. Emi was like Cinderella, she kept disappearing on him though. She’s been hiding her entire life and she hasn’t realised that she doesn’t need to keep running and hiding anymore.

Sometimes you read a book that touches you on such a deep level and that’s exactly what Spider did for me. It captured my soul and and I don’t think it will ever let it go. Spider and Emi’s story is just plain EPIC!! There were times while reading Spider that I reread whole paragraphs or just a few sentences multiple times because they touched something in me. Spider is truly a one of a kind love story that everyone needs to read. MV Ellis if I could give you every award possible for this book I would do just that. You deserve all the accolades for Spider. It was truly an honor reading this book and I look forward to reading EVERYTHING you write!!

When you have seen and lived through things that would have most people sitting in the corner rocking Emi has survived. Spider knew the day that Emi came in to his life that it was changed for ever. Will Emi ever believe that she’s good enough. Once Spider realised that he was in love with Emi he shows her what it’s like to be loved the right way. This is a beautiful story of survival. Definitely a 5 star read.

So, I really liked Spider. He's such a sweetheart.
I'm not a massive fan of Emi, I didn't feel much for her and I didn't really feel like we got to know her as well as we could have done.
Also, for me, although both of the characters had heart breaking stories during this book there just wasn't enough there to make me truly sad and everything else just seemed too easy and things felt as though they were quickly resolved. I wanted a bit more angst and to actually feel the feels.

This book will grab you from the beginning and not let go. it comes with a warning. it speaks on things we are just now trying to talk more openly about. domestic violence, mental instability, lies and family secrets. Drama, character growth and romance all in one. Emi and Spider are fated and have some moments that will have your feelings exploding.

This book was heartbreaking but at the same time it was so inspirational... a woman with a hard upbringing, caught up in a relationship she can't get out of... along came a spider and bam instant chemistry, instant feelings but can they sort through those feelings and give each other what the other one needs? A fabulous book, my first read from MV Ellis but it won't be my last.

Wonderfully powerful but also well worth the journey

Spider is the second book in the Rough Ink series but can be read as a standalone which is what I did, as I had not read the first book Zed.
So the story of Emi and Spider is emotional and hits you deep down in the soul. There are a number of triggers and at times it is a bit hard to read but in the end it is so worth it. I am not going to lie as I had to put this book down a few times and pick something light and fun to read. But I always came back to this book after my brief break. The journey that Emi and Spider take, with a lot of ups and downs, is wonderfully powerful and a great read.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. My opinions are all my own.

Just wow!

This book is so intense! The writing and characters draw you in immediately and within the first couple chapters, there’s no possible way you can stop reading.
The story itself was gripping and heart wrenching and cringe-worthy, but also sweet and sexy and very, very emotional. If you read the first book, you got a glimpse of what a great guy Spider is, but that just shines I. This book. But Emi is the real star of the story. An unbelievably strong and resilient woman who has had nothing but pain, disinterest, violence and hate in her life.
This is a wonderful book. And OMG, the epilogue had me in tears. Loved it!!

A good read

I enjoyed this although the tattoo shop was only a small part of the story.Spider met Emi when her psycho boyfriend forced her to get a tattoo. Then had a total meltdown in the shop resulting in his arrest. They meet again by accident later on and this is where the rest of the story unfolds. There were a few things I didnt feel felt true to the plot but mostly it is a good book.

Straight out of the gate this story attacks your senses!
You're under no illusion that violence is the undercurrent to this union between Spider and Emi, but it's how M.V. Ellis handles their transition to love that is the real story here, and she delivers it with all the necessary pain, fight and beauty I've come to expect from this exceptional author!

Domestic violence in the presence of mental health instability is a volatile cocktail, and the resultant mix is always explosive and painful, and leaves all it touches irreparably changed.

This is the life Emi is accustomed to.
One she has no doubt will one day kill her.
Until her life plays out in the presence of the right people. And one of those in particular; who was destined to be her saviour and her soulmate.

I loved our introduction to Spider in the previous book of the Rough Ink series, which is not necessary to have read to enjoy this one.
He has an easy-going presence and joy for life that lights up this series.
To say nothing of his description as a Nordic God - Oh, the image that created in my mind's eye!!
All that coupled with his wit and personality, the man is undeniable man candy with a capital C!

Emi is a little harder to connect with, but that's almost necessary for her character, for how are we to truly understand her unless we've walked in her shoes?
She's lived a life of violence from her very beginning. No doubt shaping her thoughts, behaviours and expectations to ensure her survival. And she is just that; a survivor.

The violence of their meeting and their subsequent relationship will have you thinking they are fated; written in the stars. He is her hero in every sense and in a way, she is his.
After all, what better person to save someone who has not known pain and hardship, than the person whose known nothing but.

As such these two are destined, but they still need to get on board with the idea.
For Spider, it's a no-brainer; he wanted this woman the minute she walked into his tattoo shop under duress.
Eli though is going to need more time and this author writes it into this tale beautifully and with adequate respect for the journey she needs to take.

Though I felt a little short changed by the ending, which was however salvaged with a great Epilogue; I still really loved this story; the process these characters had to go through for their HEA, the connection to the previous book and the promise of more from the "SK:eTCH" family.
Looking forward forward to much more Rough Ink!!

Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarian, I was gifted my copy of this book.
Meeting Emi 13 months ago had a profound effect on Spider. Not least because he saved her from her ex. Crossing paths again showed Spider how much he wanted to be with Emi. But Emi has her demons, and her secrets. Can she close the door on her past, and let Spider in?
This is book 2 in the Rough Ink series, but it’s not necessary to read Zed, book one, before this one. Zed and Vivi pop up, but not very much. I enjoyed THAT book, though and it gave me a feel for Ms Ellis’ work.
THIS book?? I LOVED this book!
Spider thinks something is wrong with him, because there are no problems in his life, no skeletons in his closet. Until one day, his world comes crashing down around him and he turns to the newly reacquainted with Emi for support. But Emi is dealing with her world crashing down, and needs Spider for support too. Spider keeps messing up though and I loved the advice Zed gives him, basically throwing his own words back at him. Emi is determined NOT to fall into her previous mistakes, and when Spider messes up, he MESSES up. He does, quite beautifully redeem himself a time a two though!
It’s dark though, be warned and readers with triggers for domestic violence will need to be careful. It’s quite violent in places, with Emi’s ex doing his thing and we do get some of that in detail.
It’s not overly explicit, but the heat level for Emi and Chris (which is Spider’s real name, and I loved that she kept the two names separate!) is hot off the page!
I read this book on one sitting, and I bloody loved it!
The bit that wrenched the most emotion from me, though, was NOT Spider and Emi, but that really was heart breaking. No, the bit that had me SOBBING was the epilogue!
A certain person has his say, in just that one chapter, and Lord does he have a lot to say! So well played there, Ms Ellis, very well played!
5 gut wrenching, emotional, extremely well written stars

Well written but so heavy

I really struggled with rating this because my level of enjoyment didn’t match up with the quality of the writing. This is my second time reading a book by MV Ellis - and the first was an easy 5-star rating for me - but the heaviness of the plot made connecting to the story difficult. The first 20-30% of the book is HEAVY, depressing, and tense, focusing on the heroine’s history of abuse (physical, sexual, emotional... triggers all around). She’s been through a lot, and while I felt for her, the lightness of the book dimmed every time she entered a scene. I did really enjoy our hero, Spider, who is a lovable giant with a tender heart. And the ending is beyond sweet, but I felt a little drained by the time I got there - which I’m sure was the author’s intent to a certain extent.

The story follows Spider, a tattoo artist whose life seems almost TOO perfect. He really doesn’t have any worries, and would kinda like it if things were shook up a bit (this is definitely a case of being careful what you wish for). While at work one day, a couple comes in asking for matching tattoos, but something seems off and it doesn’t take long to figure out what. The book opens with a pulse-pounding scene that sets the tone for the rest of the story, and Spider’s perfect life gets shaken up in a big way.

The writing itself flows so well that it’s easy to get immersed in the story. I really wish there had been some breaks in the heaviness earlier in the story so that I could connect to it, because there’s a lot to like overall. If you like an angsty, somewhat depressing read that culminates in a HEA, you’ll probably like this more than I did. But, for me, the heaviness paired with the insta-love feel to the relationship was enough to diminish my enjoyment. I will absolutely check out whatever the author writes next, because this is a case of me not enjoying a specific story more than anything. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

WOW. This book was heart breaking, emotional and just everything you want in one amazing book. You would think tattoo romance and think hard core. But no this is a touching emotional heart wrenching lovable storyline with two amazing characters who touch your soul. MV is an amazing writer who can pull you into the storyline with amazing characters and a plot that will have you emotional from the beginning. I absolutely loved this one from beginning to end. The ending had me in tears fair warning. Spider is working at his shop when his next clients come in. Something is off when he sees them he just cant seem to figure out what it is. But he knows that something isn't right. His client is Emi and her boyfriend Tommy. Tommy is not a nice person at all. This is what starts the book off with a boom. Because what happens next in the shop changes both Spider and Emi's life.

Emi is dealing with everything that has happened. She runs into Spider one night at a bar and plays it off. But she does decide to give him a chance and gives him a call. Things between them are instant. You can easily see there is chemistry between these two. But Emi feels as if she is damaged and doesn't deserve any attention from someone like Spider. Something tragic happens in Spider's life that again changes him. Will these two be able to heal each other? Or will what is happening in their life pull them apart?

Just absolute amazing storyline. I loved the chemistry between Spider and Emi and everything that he does to prove to her that there is something between them. I absolutely loved their actual first date. I need a man that will do something like that in my life. Spider screws up many times but when he realizes he screws up he does whatever it takes to fix it and I absolutely love what he does to fix things. Just one amazing book. Have tissues because you will need them on hand. Highly recommend reading this one.

Disappointed

I liked Zed so I was really looking forward to Spider and I felt let down. The beginning was great, the Norse God saving the damsel but then it all went downhill. The book got really repetitive. The constant comparison with Tommy, the cliché breakup because she doesn’t deserve him etc.. her complete overreaction at his dad funeral. Yes he was loud but he was right, she was lying by omission about her son. He told her some very personal things and I would have thought that her son would have been mentioned almost straight away. I know she had a hard life but I got really irritated when she kept going on about how perfect his life was so he couldn’t possibly understand. There’s nothing wrong with having a good life and he shouldn’t be made almost ashamed of that. It doesn’t make him shallow. If anything she should have wanted to bask in his sun. It annoyed me that as always he was the one to almost beg to talk after she turned him away. I don’t think that was fair. Then the huge gap of 3 years was too much. The introduction to her son, the building of a new life, the conclusion of the trial, how his mom coped etc. All of that was brushed aside. The 1st book was full of action in a way this one just wasn’t. Shame. I would have preferred it if, she had gone to see a therapist during the 13 months after the attack allowing them to develop a real relationship rather than the 3 meetings we seem to have read about. I also felt like the death of his father was unnecessary in the story. I guess it was to give him a sense of how pain can affect your life and how short life is but there were other ways to achieve that. In fact given who his father was, he probably would have been able to help him navigate the relationship with Emi and help out with Noah.
