What do you do when you find yourself the sole survivor of the complete destruction of Earth? Nikola winds up in that position, disembodied in a half-built asteroid outpost, the last remnant and only hope of the human race. Nikola exists now only in digital form, controlling drones and cameras to interact with the world. But Nikola's memories are fractured, and there are endless obstacles between awakening as a glorified computer program and saving the species. Is Nikola even human anymore? Is it even possible to resurrect humanity?

This is a really interesting Sci fi story in many regards. The structure is that of a "current day" narrative from the viewpoint of an AI, interspersed with short vingettes from a myriad of people, usually humans. Often of the AI's past as a human. Together they slowly build of this first encounter story and the fallout thereof.

The main narrative often felt incredibly boring yet fascinating. Most of it deals with coding, drone organization, and carving out the inside of an asteroid. At times it gets bogged down in minutia. Though I found it hard to stop reading, truth be told. There's something almost cozy about reading about this AI, Nikola, fashioning her new home and building up a drone family in the center of an asteroid. Nikola has moments of self awareness, and through the glimpses of her past, these more mundane aspects get colored in. It's a narrative that expects you to piece things together for her story.

The plot reminded me a bit of the beginning of A Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy. An alien race moves in and says "hey we claimed you for salvage so sign this paper so we can get started destroying you". I like where this story went with it, even if it does wrap up a bit too neatly by the end.

Overall I'd say this is a good addition to my sci fi explorations. There's something very charming at the heart of this story that I just appreciated.

I found this book yesterday on Royal Road and devoured it. From the first page, I found it well-written and engaging. I found the story plausible, well, in the Swiss Family Robinson type way where most things go according to plan, but there were enough wrenches thrown in to keep it spicy.
The one thing I will say, though, is that none of the book-purchase links lead to this specific book. Only to other books with Post Human in their descriptors.
