Dr. Sally has been a public health nurse, a school psychologist, and finally a clinical child psychologist in private practice where she specialized in children’s issues. Over the years, she noticed that more and more children were coming to her for anxiety.
To help these children, she successfully used cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to teach them skills to decrease their worry. She realized that one of the main concepts in CBT could be taught in a book format and the idea for this book was born.
She has now traded clinical practice for book writing, lecturing to groups of parents and professionals, and volunteering.
I have a highly anxious granddaughter. After reading this book, all she wanted to play for days was the Worry Monster game. She would ask me to tell her something untrue or "scary," and then she would refute it by saying such things as, "Go jump in the garbage can, Worry Monster," or, "You are a big liar, Worry Monster." Her 8-year-old cousin read the book several times on her own, and wanted to play the game with us, too. If you have an anxious child or grandchild, this book definitely needs to be on your shelf. Even if your loved one doesn't suffer from that condition, the book is fun to read and has delightful illustrations. It will empower any child to rethink their automatic response to fear or bullying.
Retired child psychologist and registered nurse, Dr. Sally Baird, approaches a very real concern of parents for their children—the harmful effects of worry. This book contains a thoughtful story of a young boy and girl who decide to take on the worry monster to protect themselves, and also to help their friends overcome the debilitating results of anxiety. Baird includes a helpful introduction and appendix to guide the reader towards action steps to begin shrinking those all-so-real-fears we all experience. Well done.
This is a brilliant way to gently introduce a conversation with your child about their worries. It has lovely illustrations and the information at the end is invaluable. I will be sharing this with all three of my children. (I am interested to find out what their worry monsters look like). Brilliant book!
A rare and well-done "self-help" book using a fun story to show evidence-based techniques. It has not only examples of how worries can overwhelm a person, but also techniques of how to vanquish the worry monster and simple guides showing how to do cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). It's a book for all ages! I highly recommend it!
