Queens of the Resistance #1

Queens of the Resistance: Elizabeth Warren: A Biography

Rate this book
Part of the four-book  Queens of the Resistance  series, saluting some of the most beloved boss ladies in Congress: a celebration of Elizabeth Warren, the star senator from Massachusetts and 2020 presidential candidate

All hail Queen Elizabeth! She's a “queen" but not a monarch who's spent her life fighting to create a more equal society. Now one of the most recognizable women in politics, Warren took a winding road to become the badass senator from Massachusetts—the first woman senator ever elected from the state. Day-to-day struggle to make ends meet? Check. Single motherhood? Check. Law degree? Check. Tenured Harvard Law professor? You bet! And oh, she created a whole new government agency to protect consumers from predatory businesses. This the story of Liz’s hard-earned rise to the top of the game.

With illustrations, deep research, and writing as endlessly quotable as she is, Queens of the Resistance pays tribute to this phenomenal woman.

About the series: Each book of the  Queens of the Resistance  series is a celebration of the rebellion against the oppression of women and an embracement of the new in the United States government. The series is adorned with sass, discernment, and the badassery of the present and future leadership. The Doomsday Clock is at a minute to midnight, and the patriarchal power grid that lights “the shining city on a Hill” is about to black out. It’s time to yield to the alternative—the power of women.

How much did I love this book? As much as Elizabeth Warren loves consumer protection. As hard as Elizabeth Warren kicked Mike Bloomberg' across the stage in the debates. As deeply as Elizabeth Warren loves Bailey and Bruce. Yes, friends, A LOT.

I loved the tone of this book. It felt like an old friend talking to me and giving me a personal education on this Queen of the Resistance. The introduction, setting out what happened in the 2016 election, was cathartic and perfectly stated, so I knew I was going to love this book right from the start.

The book does a beautiful job both in explaining Elizabeth's ("Betsy's'") upbringing and education, and also in detailing her many accomplishments and her transition from Republican to progressive Democrat. I had heard some of these stories before on the campaign trail, but the writing here is fresh, entertaining and humorous so that I felt I was reading them for the very first time. Also loved the accurate comparisons between Senator Warren's vision and FDR's New Deal, the accessible discussion of complex economic issues, and the coverage of her campaign for President.

I loved this book so much that I'm going to read all the books in the series (Nancy Pelosi, AOC, and Maxine Waters all have books to come). This series will make a great addition to my bookshelf and I will enjoy reading them when I need a pick-me-up about the state of women and girls in this country. (So, yeah ... frequently.). As a final note, let me just thank our democracy for giving us Elizabeth Warren. As the book says, "She's the captain leading the army, and we're following."

5 out of 5 🧑🏼‍💼The smartest Republican among Democrats

'Queens of the Resistance' is a series of books about modern-day politicians committed to making an impact on our everyday lives. They advocate for a change of the existing administrative model to be more inclusive and welcome for every gender and skin color. These Queens are concerned about racial justice, everyday problems of lower & middle-class Americans as well as undocumented ones, and climate change.

The title starts with Elizabeth Warren's parents and grandparents who lived through the Great Depression in Oklahoma as low-class citizens and their struggles in everyday life. Subsequently, the book shows Elizabeth's early life and her strifes as a single mother. As a consequence of these experiences, she'd started to dig deep into personal bankruptcy cases, she's been meeting with people and collect their stories. As a result of her studies, she changed her conservative mindset to more socially-oriented and sacrifice her future work to benefit the people with financial struggles.

Her superpowers? She has Hillary-like smartness, knows the market like Republicans, and cares about people like AOC. Her kryptonite? Yup, you've guessed it right - her gender.

The biggest advantage of the series is language, pure gen Z / millennial slang and references made me smile. That whole attitude made the book more enjoyable and easier to digest.
I enjoyed that piece and want to read more books of that series!!

Thank you Netgalley and the publisher Plume for Young Readers for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and feelings are my own.

This is part of the Queens of the Resistance four book series - Elizabeth Warren by Jones and Trotman.

Oh my goodness the research that went to writing this was phenomenal. These should be required reading. She definitely is a phenomenal woman who fought for the right of women and a true leader among us. The historical and political perspective was fair and a fun and easy read despite all the information, it was presented in a way that you want and crave for these information. Made learning fun and informative. I recommend this to everyone.

Queens of the Resistance: Elizabeth Warren is a short, lively biography celebrating Senator Elizabeth Warren’s journey from teacher and consumer advocate to one of the most recognizable figures in modern American politics. It’s part of a series designed to introduce influential women leaders through accessible storytelling. As a big Elizabeth Warren fan, any book that highlights her significant contributions will likely earn at least three stars from me. However, I struggled with the tone and style. Written to appeal to younger readers, it uses modern slang and conversational phrasing that felt distracting—and, at times, grating—for an older audience. Yet the content itself is dense, requiring a solid understanding of economics and political structures, which seems mismatched with the intended readership.

Recommended for: younger readers new to political biographies or those looking for a brief, spirited overview of Elizabeth Warren’s career. For readers already familiar with her work, this book offers affirmation more than new insight.

I love The Queens of the Resistance series. There is something about books like this that make learning about politics and history so accessible. I never once felt like I was reading a history textbook and that is so important to me. Nonfiction is great, but it can be tough to read, so I absolutely love what the authors did for this series.

Elizabeth Warren is pretty cool. I had no background information on her, but reading about her childhood and adolescence made her story so relatable. Knowing the time in which she grew up, it’s truly amazing how forward-thinking she is and how dedicated she is to equality.

I definitely recommend this book and this series to everyone.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for access to this title.

I wanted to let this biography sit with me for a couple days before I posted about it, because I wasn't sure how I felt. I love Elizabeth Warren and what she stands for, and this biography made me upset that I didn't have chance to vote for her after she dropped out before my state's primaries. I think, and hope, this biography will have that effect on everyone. The biggest thing that I loved about this was that it's perfect for most age groups. It's not too long or sophisticated for a middle schooler to pick up, and it's not too academic for an adult to pick up. It's the perfect medium. It does a great job tracing how she came to believe in what she does, and also does an even better job at explaining her politics. This is especially with the chapter about FDR's Depression Era politics and acronyms compared to Warren's politics today and the immense influence it had on her.
However, I'm knocking it down to four stars instead of five because I felt like the colloquialisms in it took away from it too much. I understand the want to connect to your audience, I just felt that it may have been used a little bit too much and in odd places. However, I think it is a great read. Like I said before, it's the perfect middle ground for anyone to be able to read. I will definitely be recommending this to the people in my life who enjoys learning about politics.

She should've been the presidency nominee. She has a plan and the knowledge to execute the plan.

Great read & it only makes you wish she was president.

I loved my first book of the Queens of the Resistance series. I learned so much about Elizabeth Warren's life, policies, and driving forces. Brenda Jones and Krishan Trotman are fantastic writers, it feels like you're sitting down with a cup of coffee with them. The audiobook is well done and quick (under 4 hours!). The book is fast-paced, accessible, and down to earth. I do think the book is targeted for the Gen Z generation, but overall I found it enjoyable and I'm excited to listen to the rest of the series.

I mean, this book - just so great. I love Elizabeth Warren so much and knew a lot about her history and upbringing but this was able to go into detail while also being conversational and easy to digest. It was a quick read but an enjoyable one. It's definitely written for people who are already supporters of Warren but I still think there is lots to learn about this queen of resistance through this book even if readers hadn't already supported her. Such an admirable woman.

I loved this book a lot, and thought it gave great historical context and background, and helped to explain why Elizabeth badass Warren is why she is.

Her fight for everyday Americans and against Wall Street and corporations is inspiring. I’m so sad that she’s not going to be our next president — it’s 100% our loss. But I’m so stoked that she is continuing the fight in the Senate.

The author was able to capture the badassness of Elizabeth Warrren and the importance of women like her in politics. This book seems to be geared toward a younger reader, but I enjoyed it all the same. The other books in this series focus on other Queens of the Resistance. This is definitely a book that everyone should read to know what a powerful and influential force Elizabeth is.

Resistance? Oh, I get it. The Queen of the Resistance of the Government against the poor, the rich and anyone in between that does not belong to the political machine, and than some from the political machine as well.

Overall Opinion: I knew some things about Elizabeth Warren, but this book really filled in the gaps. You can tell she has a wide knowledge of how the markets work and how they can be improved. I appreciate her intelligence, and I'll never forget the "nevertheless, she persisted" message.

I need to go find the others in this series now that they've added to it. Warren has been pushed by so many contenders yet still rises to every challenge. Even if you don't respect her political stance you have to respect the willingness to continue fighting.

Very interesting biography of Elizabeth Warren written in a colloquial and conversational tone. It makes it feel cozy and personal.

Interesting look into her life, however there was no mention of her coveted ‘Native American’ heritage. I am a Republican but I do try to educate my self on all sides, plus girl power is always a good message.
