Queens of the Resistance #3

Queens of the Resistance: Nancy Pelosi: A Biography

Rate this book
Part of the four-book Queens of the Resistance series, saluting some of the most beloved boss ladies in Congress: a celebration of the first woman Speaker of the House and a trailblazer for generations to come, Nancy Pelosi

Behold one of the toughest dealers in the political arena, a singularly shrewd operator who cut her teeth from deep within the ranks of the Democratic Party and climbed all the way to the top. Rising higher than any woman ever who came before, Madame Speaker created a blueprint that those after her could follow. And now, back to her rightful place as Madame Speaker, she's prepared to take back power for the people . . . and at the end of it all, in characteristic class and style, she will pass on the gavel to the next generation of badass leaders.

With illustrations, deep research, and writing as endlessly quotable as she is, Queens of the Resistance pays tribute to this phenomenal woman.

About the series: Each book of the Queens of the Resistance series is a celebration of the rebellion against the oppression of women and an embracement of the new in the United States government. The series is adorned with sass, discernment, and the badassery of the present and future leadership. The Doomsday Clock is at a minute to midnight, and the patriarchal power grid that lights "the shining city on a Hill" is about to black out. It's time to yield to the alternative--the power of women.

Warning - Politics & Boss Lady Queen story ahead!

From homemaker to a House Speaker - Nancy Pelosi’s story is one of the coolest stories in politics. She is THE power broker on the Hill and my own representative — someone I have met and worked with, so I’m a tough crowd for this book. Well, reader? I loved it.

This book totally captures Speaker Pelosi’s personality and essence. It also puts her many successes into context of the era in which she grew up, her Catholic upbringing, her family and her entry into politics. I also really appreciated its coverage of Tienanmen Square.

This book has a really unique and fun tone directed at other sisters of the resistance. It’s very informal but for me that is a large part of its charm and what makes it so fun to read. (I don’t think I’ve read any other biographies this year with quotes from Lizzo. They are most welcome in any book I read and fit perfectly here.) This book is very accessible to readers of all ages.

I really appreciated the straightforward and accurate coverage of the impeachment and disagree with the reviewer who said it had too much bashing of Trump. As the authors here might say - Sis, the POTUS got impeached. It’s not bashing when he played HIMSELF. Anyhoo, Pelosi’s important role in this historic event is well-described and well-balanced here and I also appreciated the reproductions of a few of his twitter tantrums about the impeachment. Like it or not, these things are now part of our history.

Overall a book that is current, informative and fun. I feel pretty sure the Speaker herself would approve. 5/5 - this is the second 5-star book I’ve read in this series (loved the Elizabeth Warren one too). I can’t wait to read the others and see the finished artwork.

This book is for fellow Queens of the Resistance of all ages, or anyone who wants to learn more about one of our greatest current leaders.

Thanks so much to Penguin Random House, NetGalley, and authors Brenda Jones and Krishan Trotman for another great entry in this wonderful series.

I love this series so much and wish there were more than just the four. Nancy Pelosi is one of those politicians you just know. You know of her and know her agenda, even if you aren’t actively trying to learn about her. This book is a wonderful primer as it covers her upbringing, schooling, career, and political life. I would recommend these books to anyone interested in learning about some of the current Queens of the Resistance!

Thank you to Dutton Books and NetGalley for access to this title.

WoW! What a woman!

When I saw this book on @NetGalley after recently seeing Mrs. Pelosi on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, at this time, they were beginning impeachment proceedings on Pres. Trump and I found myself impressed by her, she would not be bated, and she conducted herself with poise. Both rare in this day and age.

"Pelosi's style was always poised, consistent, slow to speak, and quick to listen. Confidently in control and yet demanding in her expectations."

I will not pretend to be up on politics; with conditions such as mine, I tend to avoid media and other triggers that tend to send me 'down the rabbit hole.' While reading, I found myself enjoying the frankness and feeling of camaraderie the authors were able to exhibit. With their constant references to 'sis' and 'Queen,' it was easy to feel like you were a part of this voyage.

"...as a Queen of the Resistance, she is courageous in her endeavor to pull in light and hope, and set America back on a moral course."

My only hang-up with this read was how towards the end when referencing the POTUS; there was a bit of smack talk. Even though throughout there was a tone of bringing about the end to the patriarchy, these last pages or so, there did seem a bit excessive.

Finally, I'd like to thank @NetGalley for this beautiful read that they provided in exchange for an honest review. LMK any questions, I enjoyed this and thought you would too.

I would like to preface that I am a huge Nancy Pelosi fan, and giving this book 3 stars hurt a bit.

My biggest beef with the book was the writing in general. It is appealing to an audience that is not me (though, admittedly, I did find some of the side dialogue quite amusing). It feels almost like a podcast that was dictated down into a book form. Great for some people. Not so much for me.

Content wise, I did learn some things, especially about young Nancy. Having studied her time in the House (especially Bush 2 and beyond), the authors do take some liberty with the story. Though I agree the Republicans, especially under Bush 2, were incompetent, they were far more functional and less nefarious than the book makes them out to be. The book certainly has bias and, while great for learning about the first Madam Speaker, should not be taken as Gospel.

If you’re looking for an easy read and introduction to the icon that is Nancy Pelosi, this is a decent place to start. Take some events listed with a grain of salt, but go for it!

It must have taken a lot of courage for the authors not to refine what my friends and I tend to write to one another and just publish something like that without asking someone to modify their tone into a refined polish.

I myself have been advised not to publish something that reads like that; my own written voice sounds different from how these women portrayed themselves, but it is still interesting to see, in its way.
I thought it came across as rough, off-the-cuff. Edgy, even. I don't know if I would put something like this out there because, although it is true there aren't errors and it doesn't sound like mental blather, per se, it seems like, um... Well...
I couldn't lay a finger on what unsettled me about it.
Maybe I still need to refine my own researching capabilities to figure out why I didn't like this biography.
I don't think it was due to how it was delivered.

I think I had a distracting headache concurrently. Maybe I'll come back to it when I am feeling better.

I thought it would be fun to read this at the same time as Pelosi by Molly Ball. It was not. This seems like it would be a very difficult book to write, and I appreciate what it is trying to do. I don't consider myself to be particularly hip, but I found it a little too corny. It lost me when the chapter about Pelosi's relationship with Bush was called "Bad Romance." I do like the format, and I think they did a good job of making the information easy for teens that might not have been taught about government or politics to understand.

This is my second book of the series that I have read. I am now 0-2 for finding enjoyment in these books. I read this book to gain deeper insight into Nancy Pelosi which this definitely provided. However, like I mentioned in my review of the AOC book of the series it read more has a hagiography replete with bias than a true biography that defines Nancy Pelosi in the Context of her achievements for showing partisan resistance to governmental processes. I feel through the use of modern slang like Go Off Sis and On fleek these books are meant to target young adults to indoctrinate them into left wing Ideologies. There better books about Nancy Pelosi than this utter garbage

It’s good information buried in all the sassy catchphrases and literal *snap snap* and Sis and other things that made it really unpleasant for me to read, but maybe I’m not the target demographic. This reads young and have it’ll get younger generations interested in the content and politics.

However I will want to pickup a biography or autobiography of Pelosi to read more. I liked the factual stuff about her life and what she’s accomplished.

I bought the whole queen’s series so I’m finishing the rest of them before donating. It’s a shame because the books look really nice.

This was pretty good — I definitely learned a lot about Nancy Pelosi that I didn’t already know, and I wished there was more about her relationship with her mother; that was fascinating. Her childhood was so interesting, too!

I didn’t love some of the colloquialisms; it kind of felt like the book was trying too hard to be relatable to “the kids” or whatever. I found it a little condescending and distracting. Still a great read though, and I love the cover art!

#9 - 2024. Audiobook. A good account of her rise to Speaker of the House - the third most powerful position in the US government, behind the President and Vice President. An amazingly skillful , powerful and effective women. Worked hard and effectively with significant achievements. An eye opener for me!!!

A political leech who is Queen of the Klan Resistance? She has voted for the prison industrial complex, for the Patriot Act, for the Total Surveillance State. So talking about a series that glorifies precisely the ones who kill and maim any form of Resistance.

I have been deeply following the trump presidency since the beginning and Nancy Pelosi didn’t look so good. I read this book to understand her side of things but was met with meager reasons for her theatrics during the presidency.

I don’t care to be addressed as ‘sis’ or told when to roll my eyes while reading a biography. I enjoyed learning about Pelosi’s life—especially her beginnings—though.

Informative and inspiring book. Nancy Pelosi shows us how life can be lived to the fullest, and how one person can make a difference.
This is a short book, part of a series about "queens of the resistance."
I highly recommend it.
