The sorcerer threatening Dragonwall is closing in.
After fulfilling an unbreakable promise, Claire is determined to settle into her new life. With powerful magic coursing through her veins, she must save Dragonwall. The path to victory is uncertain, and the magic she wields, even more so. She must learn to control it.
King Talon would rather turn a blind eye to his past behavior than apologize. Despite the deep animosity she feels towards him, Claire must learn to forgive him. Their only hope is in working together. When their emotions collide, the stakes grow even higher. They must learn to trust each other before the kingdom they both love falls to darkness.
In this heart stopping continuation of The Dragonwall Series, Claire’s quest to master her magic and protect Dragonwall leads her to face not only external enemies, but the truth about herself and her feelings for Talon.

Just when I thought the story of Dragonwall couldn't get any better...it did. I enjoyed this book a little more than Talon the Black and I'm not saying that I didn't enjoy Talon...because I did. I enjoyed it so much. I laughed and I cried. But this book dove a little deeper into the world of Dragonwall and I love it so much for that. I imagine that this series is a series in which each book is better than the one before it. Which makes me so excited for the next book in the series. Once again Melissa Mitchell sucked me into Dragonwall and I felt like I lived in the book with the characters. I have read all 3 of her books so far and not one has been a disappointment. This book is a must-read. Don't just take my word for it...read it yourself and see what you think.
You need to read this book. There's not much else I can even say but that you must read this book. It's so hard to find a book series where each book is just as amazing as the first but Dragonwall just hits every spot. I loved dipping more into Reyr's pov and learning more about his past. Him and Claire’s chemistry is just so perfect that I can't help but want them together. I won't spoil this book at all because again YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK!
reread: 7/26/24 My reading slump is being so cruel this week but reading this series is helping me a bunch.
Okay, so we all know that Claire is Talon's mate right!?! I mean it's not just me; I'm not going crazy?! Even if I didn't ship them there's all the signs: the Beauty and the Beast connection, the way he reacted when that happened, and all the talk about how his mate might not even exist (no one would ever think to look outside their own world). I'm all for the slow burn but I need the next book now!!
I wanted so long to read the 2nd instalment in the series and now I honestly want to live in these books!
I love the story and the characters of this book SO much! The characters are intriguing and interesting. The plot has all the elements I love in fantasy stories but without being similar to any I have read. The world is so well thought and meticulously put together that you feel it exists.
I guess Dragonwall calls you in and you can’t refuse it’s pull!
I read this book up until the last book on Wattpad but Tamara and Byron’s relationship made me uncomfortable.
I think underage relationships and children being intimate with grown men should contain an SA trigger warning because that’s what it is. Story or not. It wasn’t a 15 year old with someone their age, it was 11+ years age difference in human years then 100+ years age difference in dragon years.
It was fine with me at the start but when it was revealed that Byron was 26 in human years but like 100+ in dragon years it made my skin crawl because he was really pursuing her and the stealing a kiss from this prepubescent child. Tamara is 15 and had only started her period. The author also describes Tamara as prepubescent with an underdeveloped body. Then Tamara gets with Byron and when it’s time for them to mate, it’s Tamara’s idea and Byron’s parent’s death is reason for them to be intimate. I’m tired of authors romanticising grooming and underage relationships with grown men in fantasy books. Even though it’s a fantasy book, it can have morals. When Tamara and Byron are intimate for the first time, the author writes it out with the typical Wattpad paraphilia child s*x story where Tamara asks after foreplay “we’re not done yet?”.
What was the point of freeing Tamara from an arranged marriage to basically throw her into another one but it’s okay because their mates and will be happy together? I don’t understand why they couldn’t have gotten together when Tamara had grown up a bit. A few years wouldn’t have hurt even if they’re in the middle of a war. Her childhood was taken away, she went from arranged marriage to a mate and a fort leader.
It also doesn’t make sense with Claire’s character either. If Claire came from the modern world aka our world, why would she support such a relationship? Why would she support a relationship with a minor even if they’re mates? So she just gets to this new world and just forgets everything from her past life? Did she think underage relationships were fine in the modern world? Why is she against underage marriage as she says in the book it’s something she wants to change after she meets Tamara but she’s okay with underage mate bonding?? The bonding ceremony and marriage is the same thing.
This underage trope seems to fly over peoples head when it’s disgusting. How do you read a book and just say okay she’s a child with a grown man, it’s fine.
There’s brief mentions of Claire wanting to change the kingdom for women but she let Tamara’s relationship with Byron continue? She let Desaree stay with Verath even though she knows Desaree wants a family and marriage? Perhaps I pay too much attention to detail but this all caught my attention and frustrated me as the story went along. Just because Claire is happy with Talon, why is she just pushing them to get with them mates? It’s like Claire doesn’t think things through sometimes, realistically women would have these thoughts and conversations. Claire wanted to feel important and special, she needed a purpose. That is her want in the plot, to be special so her being so bent over for Talon isn’t surprising.
And why is it grown female authors who insert so much misogyny in their fantasy books? I simply do not understand it. This book has so much misogyny in it, and submitting to men. When Taylnn and Koldis get together, why was Saffra’s first thought when seeing them together in Fort Quall that Taylnn this strong princess is submitting to him and that’s a good thing for her and Behdelth to get together.
All the female characters are written to be strong and independent but they are chained to men in the end and I don’t mean they shouldn’t be in their relationships. It’s just that all the women lost something by choosing to be with the dhengrs. Claire lost her old life. Saffra and Taylnn their privacy. Desaree just lost everything lol! Marriage, the chance to have children, a family, a partner to grow old with. She’s going to spend her prime and the rest of her life with a man who will live way beyond their love.
Only the women lost or sacrificed something to be in their relationships. The men didn’t lose or do a single thing. Talon’s weak character development from being scarred was nothing to Claire never seeing her family & friends again even if she didn’t like her unsuccessful life before.
I also think Claire is simply a chosen one, even getting her magic and sprite crown she didn’t do much, the same way she couldn’t find any success in the modern world. I also think that crown should have went straight to Talynn she deserved it as soon as her mother died, even if Claire killed her by uttering a word. Instead of giving Claire another self-important pedestal moment.
Anyways, here’s my long review. Yes, we all read to escape but it doesn’t mean certain things like an underage relationship with a grown man, fetishising children (it is what it is) and misogyny should be okay in books. If I have to deal with it in the real world, why am I still reading it in books.
And do authors not stop to question themselves when they’re writing this stuff???
If you want a book with misogyny, grooming and child smut. Read ahead.

Although I might’ve enjoyed Talon the Black a bit more than this one, I still really loved this!
I think one of the reasons I love this series so much is the pacing. Sure, it’s slower than most fantasies, but it really works in this series. Every big event is built up to, nothing feels rushed at all. Even the relationship between our main characters (I swear that Claire is Talon’s mate) is moving at a snail’s pace compared to other books. I’m anxious for the next book, because I think it’ll be explosive!
Before I get to absolutely raving about this, I do want to address my one complaint. The amount of different character’s perspectives. Between Claire, Desaree, Reyr, Talon, Tamara, Captain Bennet, Mikkin, and Jeanine, it felt like it took forever to get back to the characters I loved. Not that I wasn’t interested in everyone’s storylines, or that they weren’t important, they just dragged the story on. If I’m being honest, i think I would’ve preferred it if we were only given Claire and Talon’s perspectives, with maybe short chapters from the others every once in a while.
I’d be lying if I said I read this for the plot. Instead, I read this for the romance. I know all of us fantasy lovers will kill to read a good enemies to lovers romance, and that’s what this is. Instead of skipping straight to lovers, Claire and Talon are slowly developing a connection. And that connection is more compelling to me than most insta-love matchups. Sure, I want to shove them together and have her touch his scales, but the buildup is equally important. I have to say though, I need the next book now. I don’t know how much longer I can stand to wait!
If you loved the first book, you’re sure to love this one too! It develops all of our beloved characters even more, and gives the world of Dragonwall so much more substance. I’m super excited to read the next book!
Having read Talon the Black, I was eager to read more about Claire’s journey! I found Reyr the Gold to be really heartbreaking for Reyr. Living the life of the Shield became much harder for him when the prospect of new love appeared and I don’t know how I feel about Claire’s reaction to Reyr’s need to leave Kastli Dun.
I’ve fallen in love with the series and can’t wait to read the rest of the series once they come out!

Maybe its just me but I'm getting total beauty and the beast vibes from Talon and Claire & need to make it known I AM HERE FOR IT! I am obsessed with their closure in this book, as well as their ability to move on so seamlessly, but I need more... I adore all these little side stories that let me get to know everyone in Dragonwall without it feeling forced it all flows so effortlessly, like Bryon and Tamara I would actually love to see more of them. 😍 they give me forbidden love vibes and of course I'm here for that too. [Okay, okay just give me all the romance.] The only downside to this one, Reyr just shatters my heart, someone hug this man! Imma need book 3, stat. .
So, at the end of my review for Talon the Black, said "Still, if the next book was out I would buy it immediately." Turns out the next book was out, and I bought it immediately.
Melissa, we need to talk. We need to talk about these endings you keep inflicting upon me. I have a thirst! a need for resolution! You have robbed me of a few things, first and foremost Secondly, we have Claire getting her ballgown made, her black ballgown, and yet there was no ball. I was waiting. I kept nervously looking at the page count thinking, you know what, there's enough time left. There could be a ball. There was no ball. That ball better be amazing in the next book, because you owe me a ball and some serious romantical happenings at and after said ball. I was so, so badly hoping that he would at the last moment decide to take Claire with him, oh but it seems that you will have to ride me to get there since we are flying and you are my charge and responsibility. Oh ho in order to mount me *waggles brows* you will need to touch my scales. DRAMATIC HAPPENINGS ENSUE. My luck there will be no scale touching in the next book and this series will transpire over a further 8 books, carrotting my donkey all the while.
Anyways. There were a couple of things in this book that left me a bit meh. The Talon thing.. the unveiling by Reyr was anticlimactic. There could have been so much more shown before this to illustrate the situation, but he has barely spent any time with her. I know, I know but I would have appreciated a bit more happenings in that regard to sort of illustrate and build up some tension.
I am finding the side stories to be a bit distracting. I would be totally into the Tamara/Byron storyline if it wasn't for the creepy pedo vibes. I know things were different in the time/setting in which this sort of takes place, arranged marriages at 11, children by 16 married to a 45 year old, etc. But still. It's really hard to get into it with a 15-year-old and a 30-year-old. Couldn't he have been like 25? That's still weird but way less weird. Preferably, he would be like 20 which still skeeves me but way less so, and she could turn 16 and it would be even less weird. I just don't see why he needs to be 30. I can't get into it.
I don't care about Kane. I know it's important to the story sort of, but I do not care about Kane. I would have preferred much briefer glimpses into his world. I also do not give a single ass of a single rat about Mikkin (sp?) He is taking up valuable screen time which could have left space for, oh I don't know, a ball? Perhaps some explanation about how a certain someone ended up in another certain someone's bed? Hmm? I glare. I side eye.
I should really have taken notes. There were other complainy-type things that are currently slipping my mind. I mean, does it matter? I still loved the book and am viscerally agitated that I have to wait as long as I have to wait to read the next one. I am also agitated that I have no idea how long that wait actually is. *sigh*
JUST W.O.W. I was thoroughly impressed with this second installment of the dragon wall series by Melissa Mitchell. Okay first and foremost the POV's totally make more sense as to what is going on and it JUST SO happens that each POV is happening at the most precise time of what is happening next in the story line of another POV. It's quite remarkable and perfect how the author is able to tie two different situations into one another. As some questions were answered, other questions kept piquing my curiosity and wonder in how things would happen. HOWEVER, I was SOOOO glad that the FMC & MMC started to admit their own feelings to oneself about each other. I mean surely Claire (THE FMC) has to be Talon's mate (THE MMC), or at least that's what it hints at, and she is from the sprite lineage which SOOO happens to be from the magical realm she is in now??? Heck the more the minor characters are suspicious of her origins, I am right there with them too. I love how invested as book 2 dives into the POV's we get more focused on each storyline and what they mean to each other. I had ever thought I would enjoy slow burn and slow-paced books, I would have told you absolutely not before, but this series is quite magical, and I can't put it down. Just reading how Clarie truly is starting to find herself and the connection she has to Dragon wall is very captivating and I am excited to finally move onto book 3...surely Claire and Talon will just admit their feelings even with the cute notes they pass back and forth to each other. OOOHHHH not to mention, Talon's humor is starting to show. THANK GOODNESS!!!! I am honestly glad that I am taking my time reading this book because every detail is as important as the last and I don't want to miss anything.
My favorite lines from the book: *“I grow tired of fighting with you, Claire. It affects me, deeply. I hope that we might come to a truce now, you and I. That is the reason for my gift.” He motioned to the box in her hand. “It is a symbol, if you will, that from now on, I vow to treat you as you ought to be treated, nothing less.”
*Her eyes latched onto his. “You’re here,” she managed, sounding relieved, as if she hadn’t wanted to believe it until she saw him. Gods, he loved her voice in his mind. “I’m here.” He felt a sudden need to show her exactly how he planned to punish her captors.
*“That’s Eagle, their leader,” Claire said. He studied the swordsman’s fighting style, ignoring the other two. “I might actually enjoy this,” he growled, blocking another series of blows. “If circumstances were different. But you took something that doesn’t belong to you, someone I care about, and that is unforgivable.”
*then to her complete surprise, he bent down and kissed her forehead. “Good night, Claire. I am glad you are safe.”
The PACE was way too slow. Although the book was still very enjoyable, it was annoying to see loads of chapters building up to a scene that could've taken place in only one. I'm all for Chekov's gun. Cut off the superfluous, the things that won't forward the plot. Also, many chapters contained POVs that I honestly couldn't care less about (yes, I'm talking to you, Captain Bennett). I don't see why his story was important at all in regards to the whole. Jeanine's story was also boring and I struggled to understand why she was there. The only "extra" POV I enjoyed was Tamara's, since the info we get from it is actually useful and interesting, like all the traditions regarding the mate bond.
TALON is growing as a person, which is sooo nice to read, but I still wanted to see more of him as the excellent king his Shields describe him as. From what I understand, he's a good king in battle, but not so good when it comes to politics. So let us see more of him in battle! I mean, the scene from TTB where he sees his parents die at the hands of the Ice Giant was sooo good (and tragic, of course). I wish we could've had more of that.
CLAIRE is still impulsive, stubborn, low-key annoying and cheeky, and I LOVE her. I dare say she didn't change much during this book. Talon was the one to change the most. But that's okay. Characters don't have to learn an entirely new lesson at every installment. The only pet peeve about her is that it's painfully obvious that she is a Sprite and a descendant of Irelia, but nobody dares to admit it. Come on, people! It's right under your nose! If the hints about her origins were more subtle, it would've been more fun to put the pieces together, in my opinion.
CLAIRE and TALON's relationship is a sloooow burn, which I love.
REYR is a teddy bear. I'm so sorry for him.
TAMARA and BYRON are so cute. Omg.
KANE didn't do much during the book. His minions did, which was kind of okay, but kind of disappointing. He keeps attacking new places and the people at Kastali Dun keep getting surprised for some stupid reason. I think that was the major factor that slowed the pace.
Despite all I've said in this honest review, the story is interesting and super pleasant to read. I'm impressed by the author's creativity. That said, I can't wait to follow the characters' adventures in 'Verath the Red'.

“Life in Dragonwall may have been a fantasy, but it was never meant to be a fairytale.” —Melissa Mitchell
I COULD NOT PUT THIS BOOK DOWN! I planned to only read a few pages, but once I started, I could not stop! Just knowing that there are five more books, (seriously five more books!!!) is giving me all the life I need! It just keeps getting better and better!
What I love the most about this book is that it builds on Talon the Black carrying the energy, mystery, and complexity of its storyline and expanding on it. Some books in a series can be a bit dull with the storytelling, but not this one! While Talon the Black focused on the mission of Claire’s Unbreakable Promise, Reyr the Gold expands the reality of the danger that Dragonwall is facing, embedding Claire even more in its future.
There are so many other things to love about this book! First, is the relationship between Claire and Reyr. With the book being named for him, I expected to learn more about him and I was not disappointed. From the beginning, Reyr was the only one who seemed to believe Claire, supporting her and even coming to her aid against King Talon. As one of the King’s Shields, Reyr has sworn his loyalty to King Talon and through him, we learn more about the kind of person Talon is. A lot of what we learn puts him at odds with the version that Claire has experienced. We also had the chance to learn more about Reyr’s past which added to his likeability as a character.
I loved watching Claire become more confident in her position at Dragonwall’s Court. She is a really strong main character staying true to herself, but also allowing herself the opportunity to grow. I think this is such an important aspect of the story especially since there are five more books to come. I am happy that we get to see Claire grow and I can only assume we will continue to see her grow in each book.
For those romance lovers out there, this aspect of the story really takes off. We got a taste in the first book of a few budding relationships, and now we get to see them grow. There are so many relationships to get behind. I loved when there was a chapter in a different POV because I got to check in with some of my favorite couples! Overall, the relationships, not just romantic ones, in this book are incredibly mature. I think this speaks to the medieval world that this series is set in and makes it seem more realistic.
I want to end by pointing out that I think it is fascinating we have the opportunity to read from the POV of Kane, the leader of the threat against Dragonwall. Most of the stories I have read don’t reveal the threat till later in the series and definitely don’t give you an opportunity to read from their POV. This was such an interesting choice, but one I really appreciated since I feel like I was better able to make connections while I was reading.
I have nothing but the highest praise for this book! I loved pretty much everything about it and I am waiting as patiently as I can for book 3 (Verath the Red). I know it’s only two books in, but I feel pretty confident in saying I am a Dragonwall fan for life!
I have long been a fan of Miss Mitchell's Dragonwall series, ever since I first started reading earlier drafts on Wattpad 4 or so years ago. These stories, already wonderful in their infancy, are spectacular in their published forms. Where Talon the Black was a perfect introduction into the series, Reyr the Gold has fast become my favourite of the two. This is largely due to the amount of character growth and the emphasis on character relationships throughout.
I won't pretend Claire doesn't drive me crazy at times--she does, and some of her arguments (particularly the one toward the end of this book with Reyr) frustrate me. But I also can't help appreciating that she is a flawed and very believable character. I may not always like her attitude or the way she handles things, but she feels genuine, and that's what's important.
Likewise, the other characters--be it Talon, Des, Saffra, Reyr, etc. or those who's arcs occur outside of the main plot--feel complex and layered. Their fates may all be intertwined in one way or another--perhaps even in ways yet unseen--but they are also independent of one another, moving toward their own goals.
This is such an excellent, fleshed out series with exceptional world-building and intriguing magic systems. Definitely recommended, and I cannot wait for book three.
Reyr the Gold picks up where we left off in Talon the Black, with Claire now officially Talon’s Ward and Dragonwall in danger of war.
In this second instalment of the Dragonwall series, we get to see more of Reyr’s thoughts but without losing out on Claire, Talon and the rest of the Dragonwall characters.
Claire developed a lot in Reyr the Gold and her relationships grew stronger. The tension between Talon and Claire continued and although it was frustrating, it was also refreshing that Melissa Mitchell did not attempt to bury the issues that occurred in the first book when Talon wrongly imprisoned Claire and nearly tortured her. Instead, we are given a chance to watch as they struggle with their feelings and Talon is given a chance at redemption.
We learn more about the Sprites and the Magoi as Claire begins to learn magic. We also learn through Tamara more about being a Rider and the structure of the Forts in Dragonwall. Meanwhile, Kane continues his sinister plotting.
Reyr the Gold was truly an exciting and enjoyable book. I grew fonder of the characters and now I find myself once again desperately waiting for the next book in this amazing series.
I think it’s safe to say this series is only getting better. A thrilling romantic adventure with multifarious characters for every YA fantasy fan, whether you’re immersed in Dragonwall for the epic battle scenes and action or for the more tender moments. Whatever your flavor, Dragonwall satisfies every appetite and spices it with magic and mystery. Book Two is where the arcs of a lot of the main characters start to really develop and flesh out, including Claire’s. She’s still the same headstrong no nonsense girl from Indiana, though with a few nifty newly awakened abilities and a little more empathy for a certain black dragon. Also, with quite possibly the most amazing heredity. There’s also room for a few new characters that quickly invest themselves in your heart. And then there’s Kane (queue the boos and rotten vegetables). His depravity is ever increasing and the threat of war and annihilation looms greater than before. But in the midst of adversity friendships will grow stronger, love springs eternal, and the strengths we never knew we possessed surge to the fore when we need them most. THIS IS DRAGONWALL! *Spartan kicks goblin into pit*
I have read the first two books of the DragonWall series and I really enjoyed them. I loved how the writer is sure about how she wants her characters to develop and how she actually manages to create this entirely new world from so many different perspectives. She provides us with many different POVs who are at some point interlinked to one another. It also gives us a good view into the world of Dragonwall from different people, from both the king and the peasants. I also liked how she didn't rush things, instead taking her time to develop the story and give the characters more depth although sometimes it felt she was taking it a bit overboard. Overall, I really enjoyed the book. It's a great leisure read.
If you want to get into a series that is so well thought out in the character development as well as the little details of the story, then this is the book for you. I’ve read all of the series so far out, and the Dragonwall world is just so fascinating and magical.
I love following the journey with Claire and her adventures in this world. If you want to read something original that hasn’t been done before, please check this book out! I’ve read so many books that it starts getting repetitive in the themes and ideas, but this story line and world is a one of a kind. I just love these books!
Ah-mazing. I loved this book! Picking up right where Talon the Black left off, Reyer the Gold brings readers back to Dragonwall with renewed purpose. As mystery and drama unfold around Claire, she must also come to terms with interacting with King Talon in a civil manner, otherwise Dragonwall is doomed. This book made me laugh, swoon, and broke my heart. Mitchell introduces even more new characters and POV as she takes readers all across the Dragonwall map. This book is simply unputdownable. I was delighted to get swept away again with all things Dragonwall. I cannot wait for the next book. Give me more Claire, Talon, Reyer (and the rest of the Kings Shield), Saffra, and Des!!
Reyr the Gold by Melissa Mitchell The Dragonwall Saga 2 ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐⭐⭐/5 YA/ 🌶5
📑SYNOPSIS: After fulfilling an Unbreakable Promise to Cyrus, Claire has finally accepted her new life in Dragonwall. She has a new Promise and purpose—one she created for herself.
✏️MY THOUGHTS: This series is getting better and better with each book. Our girl Claire is more settled in Dragonwall now, and she is not afraid to make her mark and call your BS! We get introduced to some new characters and get to spend more time in the Sprite forest, which is my favorite! As much as I am rooting for my favorite drengr Reyr I am slowly accepting that there might be someone else out there for her. If this was a adult fantasy I would be keeping my fingers crossed for some reverse harem action here, but I am trying to calm myself down here and accept the inevitable :) Claire, Tamara and Jeanine are my absolute favorites and I loved their chapters! I am so happy that Desaree is getting more "screen time" because she is just such a sweet, heartwarming and loyal friend to Claire.
Melissa, please be kind to Reyr! My heart will literally not be able to take it if something happens to my love!
The slow burn is absolutely delicious, but also I am dying to know what will happen next. The sweet little letters made me squeal from joy, and I am happy that our sassy Miss Claire found it in her heart to give the benefit of the doubt to a certain brooding drengr!
The series really sucked me in. I was hoping to read one book before the end of December and read all three books in one week :) It helps that you can stay up till 2 am and not have to go to work next day!
I loved this book, but not nearly as much as the first one. Clair got a bit irritating when she wouldn’t give talon the benefit of the doubt but I love the way he’s trying! He’s so cute. 🥺
I love them together and can’t wait to read book 3.
Also, Talon is ridiculously funny. 😭😭and the torture part? That had me giggling. 😭
These books have been so well rounded. Action, but also lots of day to day scenes. Romances, battle strategy, politics, found families, schooling, and so on. So much is going on, but the characters are easy to follow. Each story is unique and will most likely converge at some point.
I can't express enough how much I LOVE this series, this book was just a step better than the first (because yo more Talon and Claire closure yes!) I have such high hopes for this series!!! Honestly one of my favs on Wattpad and probably one of the best things I've ever read.
After Talon The Black , Reyr the Gold is the perfect book that seamlessly connects the story together! The writing style of Melissa is unique in a way that she has all plots planned out & executed perfectly! Definitely recommend this to all readers !!!
Oh what can I say. It's slow and painful, but beautiful of how the process is going. Another successful binge read. Now on to Wattpad to read book #3, since it's not out on kindle yet! 😭
I feel bad for Reyr. Why?????? Haha But, I loved getting to see Talon's personality more and his and Claire's relationship. She's something fierce. Actually all the ladies in this series are and I love it.
