The Mistress of Longing is…An invitation to listen and trust the deep feminine that longs to be heard.A love letter from, and for, devotion.A prescription for a passionate and creative life.A sacred reclamation.A liberation of desire.A hymn to kindness. The voice of a modern mystic.
This book is based on a poem the author dreamt. I dream poems, too (and lyrics, and riddles, and jokes), but I don't inflict them on others. It's a very thin book and, though I'm glad she didn't pad it out any further, I'm appalled and slightly impressed that she managed to pad it out this far at all.
The Mistress of Longing is someone/something the author dreamt about but is very very real, apparently. I mean, bits of what we're told - and we're not told a lot - do ring true in a way. This is because the Mistress of Longing is all about love, grief and roses. You know, like Mary, who most of us know a lot about, whether we believe in her at all, whatever we might believe about her if we do. But this isn't discussed once. There's no attempt at all to place this Mistress of Longing into any kind of context whatsoever.
The book is the same the whole way through. "What do you love? Do that! And love yourself! With roses there too!!! Also remember to breathe." It's fine, I guess, but it's absolutely nothing new, and it's kind of infuriating to read. You can tell this is a book by someone whose longing & desire is to be a poet, but you don't get the sense that it's a particular gift of theirs.
I got this book as part of a free giveaway by the publishers. I would have been really annoyed had I paid for it. There's just nothing to it. How can a book about desire be so bland?
I have long followed Wendy Cherry on Facebook, and have always loved her insights. This book is beautiful, and helps one to navigate the feelings that come up when we, especially women, take up the space we want and need.
Really beautiful book. I connected to so many of the things Wendy Cherry said in this book. For any woman who is looking to connect deeper with herself, her desires, and what makes her woman, I would recommend this.
“Devotion is the key to unlocking the truths of our longing. Devotion is a daily opportunity to experience belonging and to softly, softly open ourselves to the possibility of being pinkened by the windbreath, again and again…”
Appreciated this poetic exploration of devotion and longing.
