Le Pope, antagoniste implacable aux méthodes proches de celles d'Igor Maliakov, s'en est emparé afin de les donner à l'oligarque russe qui a juré la perte de Largo. Contre ces titres, qui représentent les 50 milliards de dollars de la société W, celui-ci exige une rançon que le jeune directeur ne peut ignorer. Mais peut-il vraiment négocier sous la menace de ses ennemis ? Il se plie alors aux ordres et s'envole pour Saint-Pétersbourg tandis que, de l'autre côté du monde, le FBI et la SEC ont investi le siège du groupe Winch afin d'enquêter sur le krach dont Mary Stricker serait toujours responsable ? en l'absence de preuves.

With new artist Eric Giacometti on board you would not have noticed any difference between this and any previous Largo Winch books. I have thoroughly enjoyed all of Largo's adventures. They are top notch adult graphic stories. Philippe Francq has done a great job telling compelling and fun adult action stories. The characters are all fully formed. Largo has a good cast of supporting characters too.
This story, The Scarlet Sails and its predecessor, Morning Star, tell the tale of a hostile corporate teakover of the H Group by what appears to be an Eastern European/Russian Cabal. Largo is framed. He has to prove his innocence and at the same time save his company. It is well told and fun. How there are not more movies or a TV series featuring this character is beyond me.

Наче каменюка скотилася з плечей. 22 том - останній з перекладених на англійську мову. Є ще 23-й французькою та окрема серія про Неріо Вінча із незрозумілим поки що статусом перекладу (наче 1-й том точно був, але оте все зачекає). Ех, колись ця серія навіть у “К-9” завітала, але мало хто вже пам’ятає ті часи, та й адаптація там була руснявою, тому нафіг треба.
Що маємо: сюжет про викрадення акція перетворили не на історію про черговий шантаж, а про конспірологію щодо існування інструменту тіньового ринку: ставок на пониження або підвищення ринкових показників різних компаній. У вас є індекс Доу-Джонса? Ні, краще, у нас є картинка індекса Доу-Джонса! Компанії навіть не треба виходити на АйПіО, не треба брати участь у торгах - все порішають на тіньовому ринку, все вирахують.
Ок, все було б круто, бери й розвивай сюжет про аудиторів і фінекспертів, та ось вам просто ровіянські мафіозі-олігархи, які просто бавляться ставками.
Зрозуміло, що за наявності 23-го тома все для Ларго склалося найліпшим чином, але довелося і вибух власного техцентра пережити, і в рашці побувати, в снігах поборсатись.
Ідеалізація запорєбріка, частина друга. З “хороших” росіян у нас тут агентка ФСБ, яка допомага Ларго. З поганих - спортсменка-снайперша. Я іх відверто плутав, бо обидві блонди, а у художника серії цікавий сталь малювати жінок. Та то таке. Ще тут перемальовано кілька локацій петербургу, з правильними написами росіянською (для цього залучили консультантку), проте рашка залишилась похмурим місцем із мемів про саму себе. В певний момент здалося, що цей том - реклама позашляховиків “Шерп”, які чи то робились спільно з українцями, чи ні, але був навіть якийсь скандал. Типу “Астон-Мартін” залишимо Бонду, по таких засніжених вулицях, тільки на лайнодаві можна проїхати. Сцена з оргією в сов’єтськоко-військовому стилі, яку проводили у метро - відвертий кітч над отим росіянським кірзяковим культом.
Хитрі плани. Задля того, щоб хтось програв на ставках, росіяни перекидали групу бойовиків з важким озброєнням у Європу і не спалилися. Щодо паління: хід із цінними паперами, які горять собі в каміні і наче нівелюють чиїсь права власності, не працює ось так. Залишаються записи у контролюючих органах, на основі яких ці права власності точно можна відновити. Присвоїти собі цінні папери теж не вийде - вони іменні. Вийде лише змусити підписати папірець про передачу прав. Але типові поганці виявилися аж занадто типовими. Образ лиходія-мініраспутіна не ”стрельнув”, йому на старті дали гарного копняка, але він радше пропердівся, ніж насправді летів. Інші росіянці-поганці ніякі. На майбутнє залишили тільки організацію, яка надає чорні банківські послуги. Чи вдастся її ефективно використати у подальших сюжетних арках - невідомо.
Що маємо після прочитаних 22 томів? Чи варто витрачати на цю серію час? Перші чотири тома дуже круті і в плані сюжету, і в плані екшену. Економічний трилер - це про них. Далі серія намагалася стати глобальнішою і поступово щось втрачала. Є і звичайний літературний варіант сюжету від Ван Хамме, але як там було в книжках, мені не відомо. Як вже мова за комікс, то читати цікаво. Звичайно, якість історії в кожному томі різна, але в середньому читач навряд розчарується. Просто не чекайте одкровень після 4-го альбома, серія буде тримати планку і за якісь умовні межі не вилізе. Щодо роботи хідожника, то намальовано все дуже реалістично. Втім, персонажів все одно будете плутати. Це як з роботами Маріні, Манари чи Лєдруа - вони дуже характерно малюють обличчя, тому навіть головних героїв різних тайтлів можна переплутати.

Dit verhaal wordt mooi afgerond maar vond ik naar het einde toe te uitleggerig. Giacometti is duidelijk iemand die vernuftige scenario's kan schrijven maar als stripauteur moet je toch opletten dat je pagina's niet met overladen tekstbalonnen worden gevuld.
Giacometti is alvast geslaagd in zijn opzet. Moest Van Hamme als schrijver op de cover hebben gestaan: geen mens die de overgang van auteurschap zou hebben opgemerkt. Dit is gewoon opnieuw een Largo-strip met de gebruikelijke verwikkelingen, vakmanschap die de belofte van een uurtje escapisme steeds inlost.
(...en natuurlijk zorgt Francq opnieuw voor oogstrelend, gedetailleerd tekenwerk, dat spreekt voor zich...)

Wat ver gezocht hier en daar, je moet ook wel erg into het financiële plaatje zijn om het een beetje te kunnen volgen. Leuk getekend. Het kwam wel over als iets wat erg (zeker met de schaars geklede dames) gemaakt is voor het mannelijke publiek.

I read this book in the same week that the GameStop stock market story hit the news. The relevance was startling. As institutions grow and expand their influence their choices have knock-on effects for us all. It draws others in, to react, to object, and to take advantage. None of this is particularly new in of itself, but it’s fascinating because boundaries are being pushed and what we consider to be normal is being tested. In Scarlet Sails, Largo’s in big trouble and it all stems from something not too dissimilar.
The W Group is massive, a global entity that touches the lives of most people on Earth. But unlike most businesses of that scale, it’s not on the stock market but in the controlling hands of one man. And that makes the company vulnerable. Discredit the man, you damage the company. Lay your hands on the deeds that give that man control of his company, and he doesn’t have a company any longer. And so this is the situation Largo finds himself in, once again at the centre of the news cycle for all the wrong reasons, with somebody pulling the strings for reasons as of yet to be understood.
When the motive is revealed, it’s all about money. What’s interesting, and surprisingly relevant, is the nature in which the bad guys plan to make that money. What they’re doing is decidedly illegal and wrong, and yet there are everyday practices, of short-selling company shares for example, that are deemed as wholly fair and above board. Here’s hoping the GameStop story doesn’t end quite so bloodily as here, though.
A standing ovation for Giacometti who has taken over the writing of Largo Winch. Not only has he succeeded in a seamless continuation, but he’s kept the book relevant, exciting, and essential. It was no small matter to follow in the footsteps of Van Hamme, but Giacometti appears to have achieved it with a swagger. I look forward to reading more from him.
This is another series that deserves a much wider audience than it enjoys. If you’ve not tried it yet, do it. You can forget spy-craft and countries knocking heads together. The highest stakes are now found within the world of big business and they have implications for us all.
