Hauntings and Humbug by Melanie Karsak
I found this lovely retelling, in a reverse steampunk way, of Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol in a collection called Wicked Winters Collection. I found it delightful and fresh and just time for the season.

Great short story!
I’ve only read the short story by Erin Hayes (so far), but wanted to leave a review. In it we get a glimpse into a new series about mermaids..the main character has lost her sister to humans long ago and misses her terribly. But a shipwreck helps her come to terms with her situation. Can’t wait to read more of this series and see if the sisters are ever reunited!!

Wicked Winters Anthology by various authors (5*) 18-21/11 - errors to report
This is an excellent boxset of shorter stories, many with Xmas themes or spookiness, and was great value as it was free! I loved reading the stories, by some familiar authors and some new ones, and I'll definitely be delving into some new series in the new year!
Individual stories:
Hauntings and Humbugs by Melanie Karsak (5*)
This is a steampunk retelling of A Christmas Carol, and was an excellent story. I LOVED it SO much, and if I could give it more than 5* I would! It really touches the heart, way more than the original ever could, and it left me with such tears in my eyes I could barely read the ending. Highly recommended reading for everyone this Christmas time!!
Holiday Hopes by Erin Hayes (4*)
This is a Sirens of the Deep short story, and though I haven't read that series, I still enjoyed it. A young mermaid Princess discovers the human story The Night Before Xmas, and it gives her hope that her missing sister is safe and well, and means she can carry on with her duties too. A lovely read, even without the background story knowledge - you get enough in the story to follow it!
O Holy Hell by Margo Bond Collins (4*)
This Unholy Alliance (Devil of Reverse Harem Romance) Series story was a good read, with lots of Christmassy references, but it was a little confusing for someone like me who had no experience with Grace Falls and co. However, if you can just accept the story on face value, it's a good Christmassy read, and certainly piques the reader's interest for the rest of the series!
Rose Red: As Red As Blood by SK Gregory (4*)
I have to admit, this story weirded me out a bit! If you like your twisted fairytales very twisted and very violent, this is definitely one for you! If not, maybe give this one a miss!!
Merry Alchemist Xmas by Mia Ellis (5*)
I hadn't read anything from this world before, and yet I could follow the story perfectly. It was a great read, simple, and I'd definitely recommend it. I'm certainly going to be looking for more books in this series!
Don't Let Go by JM Taylor (5*)
This is a very good story, full of creepiness and mystery. Awesome!

I LOVED this story, and would definitely recommend it to all fans of the spooky and macabre. I really hope there's more stories from the Graveyard Shift - I'd definitely read them!!
A Dead Man's Gift by David Barbur (4*)
This is another spooky one, and I really enjoyed it. I also liked the Xmas themes of giving and caring for others. The only thing I found confusing was it kept mentioning being in reality shows but didn't say more than that, as if it's a continuation of another story? If it was, I hadn't read that story, so it would've been good to just had a bit more of an explanation perhaps, to make sense of that, or just left it out completely so it didn't confuse the rest of us so much. But that aside, it was an excellent story, and definitely sent a chill down the spine!
The Tracks in the Snow by Angelique Archer and J Mills (5*)
This was one of my favourite Christmas stories ever! I loved the way it started, then the development of the relationship between the siblings, and the depiction of Krampus is brilliant too. I'd definitely recommend this for reading this Xmas... unless you're travelling on a train or stuck in the snow!!

This was an interesting start to a story, but it was just that - a start! The story no sooner gets going than it stops! So disappointing, and such a sad end to the boxset. I'd definitely say to stop reading BEFORE this book!!

I enjoyed this collection of winter/holiday stories.
Hauntings and Humbugs: A Steampunk Christmas Carol by Melanie Karsak is a heartwarming tale that brought tears to my eyes on more than one occasion. It’s a wonderful addition to Karsak’s steampunk fairy tales, and if you’re a fan and have read those stories, you may spot one of the many Easter eggs she has hidden throughout this tale. Seeing characters from those stories makes me feel like I’m part of the amazing steampunk world she created and continues to breathe life into!
Holiday Hopes by Erin Hayes is a short story from the Sirens of the Deep series. I haven't read that series, but this seems to be a sort of standalone where the story can still be enjoyed without having read the rest of the series.
O Holy Hell by Margo Bond Collins is a story from the Unholy Alliance: A Devil of Reverse Harem Romance series. As I don’t usually read reverse harem, and was unfamiliar with this series, I felt like a fish out of water reading this one.
Rose Red: As Red As Blood by S. K. Gregory is an interesting twist on the Snow White fairy tale. I like the idea of there being a child of darkness to balance a child of light.
Merry Alchemist Christmas by Mia Ellas seems to be the prequel for a new series. I enjoyed reading about Anya, the local supernatural judge, Ferric, an imp, and the rest of the supernatural community.
I enjoyed Don’t Let Go by J. M. Taylor. I like the way the story is laid out, and the slow reveal of who David really is, though a heartbreaking conclusion for Marianne.
The Weeping Woman by Brian Hocevar is another great tale in this collection. I realized as I read that I’ve read another story with Deputy Maggie Dell from the Graveyard Shift, though I can’t recall where I read it…maybe another holiday collection? This was an unexpected delight as the Graveyard Shift never fails to add mystery and suspense to Deputy Dell’s shift.
A Dead Man’s Gift by David Barbur is another fantastic story in this collection. I enjoy how the story unfolds as we get to know Tye in the mountains hunting elk. He is a very likeable character, caring for his friends—and even a stranger whom he never met in life.
I love a good Krampus story, and The Tracks in the Snow by Angelique Archer and J. Mills was no exception! As Cam and his sister, Amber, encounter the fabled Christmas creature on their train trip through the snowy mountains, they are introduced to terror and carnage. With three-dimensional characters and a terrifying Krampus, this is a fantastic read.
Festival of Gaslights: Beginnings by Bokerah Brumley was another great read, and while I was unhappy with where the story ended, I enjoyed this introduction to the fabled Chanukah golem, and I’m looking forward to reading the Chanukah adventures of the Frank twins in the next book.
Overall, a nice collection of tales in various genres.

What a fantastically varied collection of tales.
I must be honest, I was only interested in this because of Melanie Karsak and her Steampunk retelling abilities, but this book offers so much more too.
My favourite of them all is the above - hands down. An incredibly dark version of A Christmas Carol, given the Steampunk treatment and then some, showcasing just what a superb writer Melanie Karsak is. Anyone familiar with Dickens will appreciate the twists in plot and alternative viewpoints from a female perspective, giving this a modern yet vintage feel.
Following this, we are treated to a wonderfully varied assortment of stories featuring Mermaids, Ghosts, Demons and Serial Killers.
There is an alternative version of the nativity featuring a very festive character who puts in a surprisingly Magickal appearance which had me desperate to read more.
I really enjoyed this collection of stories, and have found some excellent new writers to follow and add to my ever increasing reading pile. If there is a downside, I would say that there is one story that feels slightly out of place, being of a much lighter tone than the others, and one which is a bit too niche with the wording which detracts from the story.
This aside, I'm sure everyone will have their own thoughts. Get this now, it's free and you will definitely not be disappointed!

Stopped reading, seemed like a young adult story, so, not for me.
O Holy Hell
Seems good but the end is not the end of the story, more like a cliffhanger.

I HATE CLIFFHANGER! I do not understand why an author does not say a thing about it right at the beginning. That way, it would be my choice to continue reading or go to the next story. Maybe the author thinks that it will entice the reader to get the next book? In my case? No, not at all, it gets me so frustrated that I wasted my time, I could be reading a story with a beginning, a middle, an end.
So, I am not taking any chances, I am not reading the rest of the stories in this collection. Maybe the other stories have an ending, maybe not but I am not taking any chances.

This is a steampunk retelling of A Christmas Carol. I don’t actually like the original but I loved this book. Ebony Scrooge has not had an easy life and has become bitter with each passing year. Her dreams of a whimsical mechanical shop have died and she has turned to making weapons for the blackmarket. After being visited by three ghosts she realizes how far she has turned away from everyone. She sets about to turn her life around and be a better person and aunt.
I loved the twist on the characters, the situations, and that she is a tinkerer. Ebony has had a rough go at it and lost basically all of her family. I felt really bad for her but could see why she turned her back on the world. I enjoyed every minute of this story and would love to see her pop up in a future book.

December 4, 2019I am not going to mark the whole book as read just yet. I only read the story by Mia Ellas (reding competition and she's the only author worth points, but i want to read the rest!). Holy heck! i really hope there is more! I have so many questions that need answers! like does the imp ever remember his mortal life? what about the new baby vamp, is she able to control and help him? and the angel? is he really just concerned or is it jealousy?

Really love this series of books
Even though some werent full stories of made you want more.I like the stories that didn't just end with No resolution leaving you having to buy the books. I like that they added a Chanukah story to the end but I wish that one was longer. The only thing wrong was that they aren't all happy endings. Some are sad like the poor girl who was haunted by a boy killed by his father. That bad me shocked as a holiday story. Not what I expected but good.

Definitely a mixed bag
Most of the stories are at least pretty decent. Three are very good and I'd read more from those authors gladly. Two were so full of typos, grammar errors and other assorted problems, I could barely finish reading them. One (Tracks in Snow) was really well done, but children in peril happens to be something I have a real problem with and I almost quit reading for that reason. Glad I didn't because the ending was so very worth it.

I purchased this book because an author friend of mine, David Barbur, has a story in this collection and I knew I'd want to read it (I've read it four times), but I was delighted to find that I really enjoyed so many of the other stories. Although many of the tales were written in a genre I would not typically read, the writing was so fantastic that I was pulled into the storylines and characters and couldn't put them down until I finished. A great collection of tales!

Interesting collection
As usual, some stories in this anthology are better than others. It's too bad higher editing standards weren't applied because a couple stories have atrocious errors throughout. Most, however are well written. The paranormal theme paired with the holidays is fun and unique. It's not my favorite genre and reading it out of season doesn't help, but it's enjoyable nonetheless.

Short story collection
Several short stories. Some better than others. I really liked Melanie Karsak’s retelling of Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol. In this the main characters are all female. Some are intros into books.

Good introduction
This is a collection of short stories some complete, some merely opening chapters. All are well written . The story about elk hunting is especially moving as is the story about the policewoman assigned the graveyard shift.

Some stories were fun to read, but a lot of them were just rushed and confusing. Also, some were excerpts of their books while others were written for this one, I assume and there was little consistency.

I really loved most of the stories
This is the second Christmas anthology by these authors I've read and this one is better cultivated and cohesive. My personal favorites were the first story and the graveyard shift one with Maggie. But most are decent if not excellent.

Good set
Interesting take on several holiday themes.
I especially liked the first one, a steampunk Christmas Carol.
Some are lead ins to series.
Interesting take on several holiday themes.
I especially liked the first one, a steampunk Christmas Carol.
Some are lead ins to series.

I enjoyed the first story, the twist on the old Christmas Carol, however the rest of it kind of fell flat and felt forced.

A nice little holiday anthology. There are a couple complete stories, but most are prologues to books coming in 2020. I did take to a couple authors and add their books to my lists.

Scary Christmas stories
Most of the stories were ok. There were three that were very scary. My favorite one was the weeping woman. It gave me the creeps.

Wicked Winters by Melanie Karsak --So some of these stories are a 5 and some of them I didn't finish because I'm not a big scary/thriller person. But I bought the collection for the Melanie Karsak story because I loved her Christmas retelling from last year. Her remake of A Christmas Carol by Dickens did not disappoint! Though you will never get me to admit it in real life, it may have caught me right in the feels and I may have had to take a few deep breaths. The first four stories in the collection were also pretty cool if you want paranormal in your holiday festivities! The last four were a little creepier than I usually swing for, but I did at least try a taste of them all. I think it was totally worth the great price I got on it! Happy Reading!
