Acest volum de memorii vine să consfinţească faptul că aproape tot ce se ştie despre Gabriel García Márquez provine din interviurile şi din opera sa şi să aducă mărturii emoţionante despre "viaţa secretă" a autorului căci, aşa cum acesta se destăinuie, "omul are trei vieţi: viaţa publică, viaţa particulară şi viaţa secretă, cea pe care o povestim cel mai adesea noi, scriitorii; toată viaţa mea este încifrată în romanele mele". About the author

Gabriel José de la Concordia Garcí­a Márquez was a Colombian novelist, short-story writer, screenwriter and journalist. Garcí­a Márquez, familiarly known as "Gabo" in his native country, was considered one of the most significant authors of the 20th century. In 1982, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

He studied at the University of Bogotá and later worked as a reporter for the Colombian newspaper El Espectador and as a foreign correspondent in Rome, Paris, Barcelona, Caracas, and New York. He wrote many acclaimed non-fiction works and short stories, but is best-known for his novels, such as One Hundred Years of Solitude (1967) and Love in the Time of Cholera (1985). His works have achieved significant critical acclaim and widespread commercial success, most notably for popularizing a literary style labeled as magical realism, which uses magical elements and events in order to explain real experiences. Some of his works are set in a fictional village called Macondo, and most of them express the theme of solitude.

Having previously written shorter fiction and screenplays, García Márquez sequestered himself away in his Mexico City home for an extended period of time to complete his novel Cien años de soledad, or One Hundred Years of Solitude, published in 1967. The author drew international acclaim for the work, which ultimately sold tens of millions of copies worldwide. García Márquez is credited with helping introduce an array of readers to magical realism, a genre that combines more conventional storytelling forms with vivid, layers of fantasy.

Another one of his novels, El amor en los tiempos del cólera (1985), or Love in the Time of Cholera, drew a large global audience as well. The work was partially based on his parents' courtship and was adapted into a 2007 film starring Javier Bardem. García Márquez wrote seven novels during his life, with additional titles that include El general en su laberinto (1989), or The General in His Labyrinth, and Del amor y otros demonios (1994), or Of Love and Other Demons.

Un memoir, cum spun englezii, folosind un cuvînt din franceza veche. Este, firește, povestea unui triumf, redactată cu umor și modestie. Există și versiuni negative ale unei astfel de scrieri, autorul prezintă un itinerariu care sfîrșește în eșec, precum Rousseau în Confesiuni.

Gabriel García Márquez a fost crescut o vreme de bunicii de pe mamă, la Aracataca. Bunicul lui fusese colonel, participase la Războiul Celor O Mie de Zile, dar acum e poreclit de toți Papaleto și e un ins pașnic și cumpănit. Poate (și) din acest motiv, literatura prozatorului columbian e plină de colonei. Bunicul „învățase meseria de aurar” (p.53), făurește pești cu solzi de aur, care nu au însă nici o căutare, mușteriii îl ocolesc, fapt care nu-l deranjează prea tare. Papaleto îi dăruiește nepotului Dicționarul explicativ al limbii spaniole. Va fi o lectură decisivă pentru viitorul prozator: „îl citeam ca pe un roman” (p.117). Își va îmbogăți vocabularul, dar va avea mereu probleme cu ortografia. Nu mai este nevoie să spun: figura bunicului îl va inspira în romanul Un veac de singurătate (1967).

În casa de la Aracataca locuiesc cîteva zeci de rude: unchi, mătuși, cumnați, veri, nepoți, un veritabil clan. Aracataca prefigurează miracolele din Macondo. Sora prozatorului, Margot, mănîncă pămînt (p.285), mătușa Francisca se pune în pat, perfect sănătoasă, și așteaptă să moară etc. Cînd părinții se mută la Sucre (căci tatăl lui Márquez e un farmacist homeopat mereu pe drumuri), copilul se întoarce, în sfîrșit, acasă. Urmează școli (un colegiu iezuit din Barranquilla, Liceul Național din Zipaquira, nu departe de Bogotá), dar n-are vocație de elev silitor. Norocul lui e prietenia cu Martina Fonseca, „o albă turnată într-un tipar de mulatră” (p.213). Printre altele, aceasta îl meditează și-i divulgă secretul premianților: cel mai bine e să fii foarte atent la lecții; dacă ești atent, ții minte aproape totul. În consecința acestui sfat prețios, Gabriel García Márquez va termina liceul ca șef de promoție, deși recunoaște cu franchețe că nu a fost cel mai bun dintre elevi.

E pasionat de muzică și de poezie. La serbările școlare, poate recita fără greș poeme interminabile în uimirea auditoriului. Simte că vocația lui e aceea de scriitor. Se va înscrie la Facultatea de Drept, dar nu o va absolvi niciodată. Citește enorm (lista autorilor studiați e consistentă) și încearcă să afle de unul singur tehnicile narative. Mărturisește: „Multe dintre romanele pe care le citeam și le admiram pe atunci mă interesau numai pentru învățăturile de natură tehnică. Cu alte cuvinte pentru arhitectura lor secretă” (p.339). William Faulkner va rămîne „cel mai fidel dintre demonii mei literari” (p.15).

Unele pagini sînt de un umor nebun. Într-o zi, e prins de un soț în patul consoartei, pe nume Nigromanta, o femeie superbă, cu „un profil abisinian”. Soțul era un fost sergent de poliție: „A pus revolverul pe masă, a desfundat o sticlă de rom de trestie de zahăr, a așezat-o lîngă revolver și am stat amîndoi jos, față în față, bînd fără să vorbim. Terminasem prima sticlă, cînd se dezlănțui potopul. El desfăcu atunci încă o sticlă, își sprijini țeava de tîmplă și mă privi țintă cu niște ochi de gheață. Atunci apăsă pe trăgaci pînă la capăt, dar nu se auzi decît un zgomot sec. Abia dacă-și putea stăpîni tremurul mîinii, cînd îmi dădu revolverul.
- E rîndul tău, îmi zise” (pp.272-273).

Márquez ia pistolul și-l privește buimac pe adversar. Arma e „grea, fierbinte”. Nu trage, înapoiază mecanic revolverul și-și așteaptă resemnat sfîrșitul. Brusc, sergentul izbucnește în hohote de plîns. Apoi îi declară: „Știi de ce pleci de aici viu și nevătămat? Pentru că tatăl tău a fost singurul care m-a putut lecui de o blenoragie nenorocită, de care nimeni nu m-a scăpat vreme de trei ani de zile” (p.273). Păcătosul n-a știut că, de fapt, ținuse în mînă un pistol cu capse...

Pînă una-alta, n-ar fi rău să reținem acest panseu enigmatic: „Ar trebui să citim numai cărțile care ne obligă să le recitim” (p.175). Din păcate, acest fapt mirabil nu e cu putință.

Cînd în acest „memoriu” își face apariția Fidel Castro, viitorul „patriarh al Cubei”, a cărui toamnă o va descrie în romanul lui cel mai bun, interesul meu se subțiază brusc. Gabriel García Márquez se definește ca un „comunist neîncrezător” (p.136). Cu timpul, din păcate, va începe să creadă...

P. S. Notez această precizare a prozatorului: Macondo „e numele unui arbore tropical, care nu are nici flori, nici fructe, cu lemnul moale, folosit pentru făcut luntre și vase de bucătărie” (p.31).

يفتح ماركيز صندوق الذكريات ويحكي بالتفاصيل عن حياته
تبدأ رحلة الذكريات بسفره مع والدته, وأثناء السفر يخبرها أنه لن يكمل دراسة الحقوق ولن يكون أي شيء آخر غير كاتب
يحكي عن حياته الغنية بالتجارب والمشاهدات والناس والعلاقات, والفقر الذي ظل ملازما له فترة طويلة
أول قصة قصيرة نُشرت له في الملحق الأدبي لجريدة الاسبكتاتور, ولم يجد خمسة سنتات لشراء الجريدة
يعرض أيضا تاريخ بلده كولومبيا وكل الأحداث السياسية التي مرت به
عاش حياته كما يرغب وبدون تخطيط, تحكمه رغبة واحدة هي شغفه بالكتابة
إدمان للقراءة والتدخين, وسهر في المقاهي التي كانت تُعتبر مراكز ثقافية وسياسية, وإفلاس دائم إلى أن انتظم في العمل الصحفي وكتابة المقالات.
عنده قدرة عجيبة على وصف أدق التفاصيل رغم كتابته لهذه السيرة وهو في الخامسة والسبعين من عمره

هى السيرة الذاتية كما يجب ان تروى ..

ماركيز فى كل مرة يثبتلى أنه كاتب من طراز آخر
كاتب يعتمد على خبراته الشخصية وخياله ليخرج لنا اعماله المبهرة

هى المرة الاولى التى اكتشف فيها ان مئة عام من العزلة رواية واقعية فى الكثير من أحداثها وان زادها جمالاً بعد الاوصاف والواقف التخيلية
أبعد الاشياء التى لا تتوقع انها حقيقية مثل الفتاه التى تأكل تراب

ستكتشف هنا معاناة ماركيز للوصول الى ما وصل اليه والشقاء الذى عاشه صغيراً

سترى الجانب الانسانى منه وحياته الصحفية والكثير والكثير من الاحداث فى حياة ماركيز

لكن لكى تستمتع به لا تقرأ أكثر من خمسين صفحة فى الجلسة الواحدة حتى لا تمل منه

هذا الكتاب زادنى حباً فى ماركيز
وإن لم يكن هو الافضل .. فهو المفضل بالنسبة الى

The 6th book by Gabriel Garcia Marquez (1927-2014) that I've read. This is supposedly the first volume of this 3-part autobiography. I chose this over his other novels or novella in my to-be-read folder because he just recently died and so I thought I would like to know more about him by reading his autobiography.

I am not sure if there is still the second or the third part of this autobiography. This book, published in 2002, was the last published non-fiction of him. For fiction, it was the novella Memories of My Melancholy Whores (3 stars) which was published in 2004. Now that G. G. Marquez is dead, I have a feeling that his estate will published his works and there could be some manuscripts for the parts 2 and 3 of this autobiography especially because he contacted dementia only in 2012, ten years after the publication of this book.

I am not really bewildered by this book. Reading this is nice if you've read some of his books particularly One Hundred Years of Solitude (5 stars) because it would make you understand some of the actual events mentioned in the book like the Banana Massacre (Columbia, 1928) that caused the death of many banana plantation workers. You would also have a feeling that some of the characters in One Hundred are based on G. G. Marquez's family particularly his mother and her parents (G. G. Marquez's grandparents). That maternal side of his are really fascinating and the superstitions beliefs during that time are similar to the magical realism that seems to be the legacy-contribution of G. G. Marquez in World Literature.

My favorite part of this autobiography is the young G. G. Marquez's attitude that he wanted to become a writer more than anything else in this world. His father wanted him to become a lawyer or a doctor but G. G. Marquez's was steadfast in what he wanted in life and so when he was 25 he boldly declared to everyone that he would become a writer. Similar to the current situation in the Philippines, writing (especially fiction) is not a money-making profession. There are very few exceptions but if you want to get rich, don't take journalism as a college degree unless you want to become a politician someday or you want to die young because the Philippines is one of the countries with high death mortality for journalists. Likewise for creative writing or literature graduates, since most Filipinos do not read books or if they do, they read foreign-authored books, then being a local writer is not a lucrative profession.

With exactly the same situation in Columbia during the 1940's the young G. G. Marquez went against the wishes of his parents and pursued his ambition of become a writer. Look at what he achieved: he put Latin American in the world's literary map. The world practically wept when he died on April 17, 2014. It was Maundy Thursday when I heard about it and the the gloom of remembering the passion and crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ was doubled by the sad news of G. G. Marquez's passing.

We will miss you, G. G. Marquez. God speed and say our regards to Jose Saramago!

Please continue, if you can, writing novels in heaven.

this has been, without a doubt, the best autobiography that i have ever read. not only that it offers you an endless amount of details about Marquez himself and the influences that made him become a writer, it is also a fine analysis of the political and economical situation of the XXth century Columbia. Alternating between these two very interesting topics, Marquez makes the writer feel what he felt and see what he saw when he was younger.

his life, like most lives of the biggest writers of our world, has been a roller coaster of emotion, putting him through all sorts of situations and giving him the experience of poverty, pain, loneliness and most importantly for a writer, the experience of vision, of dream. i once saw in an interview that he said : "from the moment i was born, i knew i wanted to be a writer". you can clearly see here how early and abnormally his passion for the written word started and how obsessed he became with the mystery of stories.

the autobiography is written in a very objective manner, and there's a very good reason for that. scattered throughout you can find things that different writers or friends of Marquez said to him, about him. in general, these things imply that he is a phenomenal writer, that his future is set to be bright, a prognosis of an influencial literary life and the conclusion that, no matter how tough things might be for him now (in his twenties), his talent can only be explained by a lucky star that nobody can interfere with, all these told to him before he turned 25 years old. no matter how he ended up changing the cultural face of the XXth century, any young man can be easily influenced by these kinds of premature certainties. i'm sure that Marquez himself found solace in those predictions when times were tough, but his constant work and dedication become that much more worthy of praise. years later, when he wrote this biography, he simply had to be objective. anything more than a simple reminder of those lines would have looked too much like infatuation, ruining an otherwise coldly-written tale.

i feel so sorry that it stopped when he was barely thirty, and now we'll probably never have the next parts of Marquez's story written by himself.

and on top of all that is amazing in this book, there's one more thing that makes this a master's work - it doesn't feel like just a biography. its texture is transcending factual matters and revolves around a world that seems almost as mystical as the one who wrote about it. in that sense, if not in others, this is not just a biography.

i sometimes wonder how it feels to be respected and loved by such an extraordinary man as Marquez was. to be a part of his autobiography is to be a part of this world's greatest literature. the men and women who influenced him might never know how they shaped our world's literary boundaries. only we, the ones who read, will ever be in debt to them.

بوحٌ على بوح.. هي سيرة ماركيز الذاتية.

ماركيز المفتون بسحر الحكاية، يقرر أخيراً أن يخلع عنه معطف الروائي ويحكي لنا عن ماركيز الإنسان، في مضمومة قوية من براعة الحكي -ما لم يقدر على الخلاص منه أبداً- ممزوجة بفن الاستقطاب، انفلتت في تداعيها الحر مدفوعة بصراحة وصدق صادمين، ولغة أدبية اعترافية النزعة.

حقيقةً ما زلت لا أصدق كيف تقدر شخصية عامة وذات ثقل -أياً كانت- على كتابة سيرة ذاتية كاشفة وربما فاضحة أيضاً كهذه.. لا يعمدون فيها للترشيح، ولا لمقص رقابة على عالمهم السفلي.

قرأت من قبل "ماذا علمتني الحياة" لـ جلال أمين، و قرأت على عجل " الخبز الحافي" و "الشطار" لـ محمد شكري
والآن يأتي ماركيز..
في كل مرة أخوض نفس التجربة: الذهول والصدمة.. ثم الافتتنان.
مع ماركيز.. التجربة كانت ألطف بعض الشيء عما هو في سيرة شكري مثلاً
لكن هناك دائما نفس السؤال: كيف واتتهم الجرأة؟
كيف تجرأوا على نبش المستور من أسود وأغمق ما في طيات النفس الجوانية؟

قرب انتهائي من الكتاب، وقعت تحت يدي مصادفةً مقالة في عدد قديم من مجلة "وجهات نظر"، كتبها الروائي خيري شلبي، ويحكي فيها عن ارتباطه الشديد بماركيز، والأثر الذي تركته أعماله في عالم خيري شلبي الأديب، واكتملت الصورة بما رآه في سيرة ماركيز من تشابه يقترب من حد التطابق بعالم خيري شلبي الإنسان.
يقول خيري شلبي:

" لقد مرت بي لحظات، وأنا مستغرق في قراءة السيرة الذاتية لماركيز، شعرت خلالها بأنني عثرت علي توأم لي علي شاطئ الكاريبي، بل شعرت بأنه أقرب لي من يوسف إدريس ومن كثيرين لا يربطني بهم سوي مجموعة من فرضيات اجتماعية ثقافية تاريخية عقائدية عرقية، مهما توثقت نظرياً لا تمنع قيام العدوان بينهم لأتفه الأسباب.
إن إدماننا لبس الأقنعة، قد أكسب الأقنعة سماكة ومتانة، وخرَّب دواخلنا تخريبًا مروعًا.
ولأننا قد أصبحنا ممنوعين من مواجهة النفس ،وتعريضها للهواء النقي وللشمس، فإن دواخلنا ستظل ركامًا من العدوان لا يصيب أحدًا سوانا. "

أربع نجمات لـ ماركيز لأنه رائع ولأني أحبه :)

كتاب "عشتُ لأروي" للروائي الحائز على جائزة نوبل (غابرييل غارسيا ماركيز) هو عبار عن مذكراته...
يقع الكتاب في حوالي (٧٠٠) صفحة. يُمكن القول أن أول (٣٠٠) صفحة قد تجد فيها فائدة؛ في حين أن الصفحات المتبقية تكاد تكون بلا طائل. في الحقيقة تبدأ مذكرات الكاتب من اللحظة التي زارته أمه قادمة من القرية إلى المدينة حيث يدرس الحقوق وهو في السنة الثانية لتطلب منه مساعدتها في العثور على من يشتري بيتهم القديم. وبأسلوب روائي يبدأ الكاتب في سرد مذكراته من تلك اللحظة ويرجع إلى طفولته ويقص فيها كثيرًا من المواقف ثم يعود إلى نقطة الارتكاز وهي رحلة بيع البيت، وفي الطريق تبدأ حواراته مع أمه التي تجادله في أن يُكمل دراسته للحقوق في حين كان قد عزم على أن يترك دراسته الجامعية ليعمل صحفيا ويتفرغ لحلمه في أن يُصبح كاتبًا.
المزعج في هذه المذكرات أن حوالي ٥٠٠ صفحة في القسم الأخير منها لا تتحدث إلا عن مغامراته الصحفية التي كرّسته بوصفه صحفيا لا بوصفه كاتبًا عالٓميا استطاع الحصول على جائزة نوبل؛ الأمر الآخر المزعج أن المذكرات لا تكاد في سردها تتجاوز السنوات الخمس والعشرين الأولى من حياته مما يُبقي حوالي ٥٠ سنةً من عمره مجهولةً!!
لكن ذلك يقوّي لديّ قناعة بأنه توفي قبل أن يُتمّ سرد مذكراته كلها.
ملاحظة أخرى أن الكاتب سرد لنا وبالتفصيل قصة كتاباته للمقالات الصحفية التي عُنيت بشؤون الكوارث والحروب الأهلية والزلازل ولكنه لم يفعل الشيء ذاته مع رواياته التي حققتْ له شهرته العالٓمية؛ بل إنه لا يكاد يذكر شيئًا عن (مئة عام من العزلة) ولا عن (خريف البطريرك) ولا عن سواهما، مع الاحتراز قليلاً أنه تحدث ولكن بشكل شحيح عن (الحب في زمن الكوليرا).
بقي أن أقول: تبقى للكاتب مكانته؛ لكنني لا أنصح بقراءة سيرته الذاتية هذه (عشتُ لأروي) لأن كثيرًا من الوقت المبذول فيها ربما سيذهب بلا جدوى!!

Δεν είναι μυστικό πως δε συμπαθώ καθόλου τις αυτοβιογραφίες. Θεωρώ ότι οι περισσότεροι που καταπιάνονται με το είδος δεν έχουν μια τόσο ενδιαφέρουσα ζωή να διηγηθούν κι αυτοί που έχουν, συνήθως στερούνται των λογοτεχνικών μέσων για να το κάνουν καλά. Τι απ' τα δύο συμβαίνει εδώ; Μάλλον κάτι ενδιάμεσο, με τη γραφή του Gabo να περνάει σε πρώτο πλάνο και να επισκιάζει τα βιώματά του.
Πολλά (περιττά) ονόματα, περιστατικά από την παιδική του ηλικία που φαντάζομαι είναι σημαντικά για τον ίδιο αλλά που προσωπικά βρήκα φλύαρα, τα χρόνια του στη νομική, στη δημοσιογραφία, μια πολιτική ζωή γεμάτη ανατροπές, μια ζωή αβέβαιη, μποέμ, δημιουργική. Τίποτα λιγότερο απ' όσο θα περιμέναμε, δηλαδή, από έναν υπέροχο τυχοδιώκτη.

Όμως το είχα οραματιστεί αλλιώς. Έχοντας διαβάσει σχεδόν το σύνολο του έργου του, ήθελα εκτενέστερες αναφορές στα βίβλια του κι όχι απλά περάσματα, λιγότερες ξαδέρφες, περισσότερες λεπτομέρειες για τη δολοφονία του Jorge Eliécer Gaitán της οποίας υπήρξε σχεδόν μάρτυρας και τη δεκαετία βίας που ακολούθησε (La Violencia), λιγότερες πουτάνες, περισσότερες ιστορίες... Κάτι αντάξιο, εν ολίγοις, μιας βιογραφίας ενός συγγραφέα που πολύ έχω αγαπήσει.

"Τόσο άσχημο ήταν;" δημιουργείται εύλογα η απορία. Καθόλου. Αλλά οι προσδοκίες όταν διαβάζεις τη ζωή ενός Gabriel García Márquez είναι εξαρχής πολύ υψηλές που ίσως δεν μπορεί να τις ικανοποιήσει ούτε ο ίδιος.

Αυτό που έχω να εξαίρω, όμως, και έρχεται να συμπληρώσει την πρώτη μου ένσταση ως προς τα memoirs είναι το πόσο δεν τον ενδιαφέρει να μας αποσπάσει τη συμπάθεια και πόσο λίγη ανάγκη φαίνεται να έχει να του πούμε μπράβο (ένα κοινό όλων των αυτοβιογραφικών κειμένων). Για του λόγου το αληθές, η λέξη Νόμπελ αναφέρεται ή μία ή δύο φορές σε όλο το βιβλίο. Αν εγώ είχα πάρει βραβείο έκθεσης στην τρίτη δημοτικού, δε θα είχα πάψει να το λέω σε όλους μέχρι σήμερα. Ίσως γι'αυτό ο Gabo είναι τόσο μεγάλος λογοτέχνης κι εγώ γράφω απλώς τη γνώμη μου στο GoodReads.

The years were flying by and I did not have the slightest idea what I was going to do with my life, for much more time would still have to go by before I realized that even that state of defeat was propitious, because there is nothing in this world or the next that is not useful to a writer.

Let's bring back the world of the literary salons, please. To discuss books, what they mean to us, books we read for community and those we read for companionship. The classic and the contemporary. Books that devour and open up conversations about the world around us. May we learn each other and the world by being intentional in the books we read: layered, diverse, global, with an array of subjects. I'm off topic, but this is how reading Márquez has made me feel. He was shaped by the books he read, taught himself to write by reading. At times he lived alone in poverty and dressed like a beggar, but he looked forward to his time with writers and readers to discuss books.

My best sources of inspiration were the conversations older people had in my presence because they thought I did not understand them...just the opposite was true; I soaked them up like a sponge, pulled them apart, rearranged them to make their origins disappear, and when I told them to the same people who had told the stories earlier, they were bewildered by the coincidence between what I said and what they were thinking.

A good percentage of this memoir explores his growth as a writer and student of the craft. There are moments of vulnerability, when he tries to soak up information and wants to be in literary spaces, even when he does not know what his being said. There is a moment when his teacher is replaced by the poet, Carlos Martin. One day he runs an errand at his teacher's house and meets Eduardo Carranza and Jorge Rojas. They are discussing the book of Paul Valéry, whom he had never heard of. He is in awe but unfortunately has to leave. Years later, he remembers that moment as an instance of how he learned from literary discussions, and it would influence his intentional immersion into those spaces.

He read books insatiably, sometimes smoking four packs of cigarettes a day while he read (an addiction he tried to curb later in his life). He loved reading Faulkner because the small American towns in his novels reminded him of his small towns in Colombia. He hated reading Don Quixote initially, until a friend told him to try reading it while on the toilet. Once he did, he admits, "only in this way did I discover it, like a conflagration, and relish it forward and back until I could recite entire episodes by heart." He lost patience reading Ulysses while he was studying law and it reminded me of a dull English Lit professor who made me lose interest in the book. Years later, as a "docile adult," he read it in a "serious way" and "discovered a genuine world" and it gave him the technical tools "in freeing language and in handling time and structures" in his books.

But it wasn't until reading Kafka's The Metamorphosis that he felt "an irresistible longing to live in that alien paradise." He started to write, producing his first short story, "The Third Resignations." If you've read One Hundred Years of Solitude or The Autumn of the Patriarch, you can imagine how the eccentricity of Metamorphosis inspired the fictional realms Márquez produced. Later, he would also contemplate how Hawthorne's The House of the Seven Gables marked him for life.

I enjoyed reading about his mother. It's clear that Márquez was inspired by his mother. His memoir opens with going to help his mother sell their aging house in a town drowning in poverty due to the exit of a banana plantation that provided jobs (Yes, Macondo, for Márquez readers, is based off a real banana plantation folks). Along the way, you learn a lot about his mother's tenacity. His mother, a homemaker, managed a village of children: seven boys and four girls, with Márquez being the oldest. His mother, a pianist, gave up the piano to take care of children. His father, a violinist, gave that up to work in the medical field and wanted Márquez to do the same. But he rebelled. The compromise was that Márquez would go to law school. But he dropped out of law school. If you've read Love in the Time of Cholera, you'll be fascinated, like I was, to learn that the love story is inspired by his parents' love story. His father gave his mother a rose at a dance and said, "I give you my life in this rose," and I almost fell out of my reading chaise. But if Love in the Time took from his parents' relationship, Leaf Storm was the book he knew he had to write after the trip with his mother to sell the house. While working on Leaf Storm, his family temporarily rented a house in Cartagena and it was inhabited by a ghost wearing a dress with red flowers. As you can imagine, they promptly moved out. His mother was the first person Márquez called after he became a Special Correspondent to Geneva and his mother was the one still returning his letters with the spelling corrected, even after he was a published writer. I chuckled at this because I remember my dad returning my emails and texts with the spelling corrected.

The night had become clear and cool under the full moon, and the silence seemed an invisible substance that could be breathed like air. Then I understood what Papa had told us so many times without our believing him - that he had practiced his late-night violin in the silence of the cemetery in order to feel that his waltzes of love could be heard all around the Caribbean.

Reading about the political world aflame around him, you understand why politics enters his novels—for instance, The Autumn of the Patriarch comes to mind. It made me wonder how Márquez would write today, in the political madness of a climate in which we find ourselves. How would he use art as an outlet, when so many are just too exhausted to engage anymore? A particularly distilling moment is when he witnesses the assassination of Jorge Eliécer Gaitán, a Colombian leader who tried to advocate for social reforms. This would become a pivotal moment for Colombia, as it led to a long civil war.

At no moment did I realize that I was already an apprentice writer who would try one day to reconstruct from memory the testimony of the hideous days we were living through. My only concern at the time was the most mundane of all: to inform our family we were alive...

I was surprised, encouraged, and lifted as I read the stories of his life. Márquez started off as a poet. Who would have imagined? He is also transparent about his vulnerabilities. He repressed fears of speaking on telephones and of flying. He was "shy and sad." His sexual escapades were funny: he slept with a policeman's wife and was almost killed. The love story of how he courted his wife is warming. Some stories of his life closely resemble those in his novels. In fact, his life seems surreal. I read somewhere that this could be Volume I, so hopefully we get another Volume because it would be interesting to read about his life in Mexico City and his brief stay in Geneva. While I've always admired his fiction, his lived experiences make me truly understand the undertone of his novels. This autobiography caught me unawares. In a good way. It also makes me want to read more.

عجب زندگی‌نامه جالبی بود. صدتا رمان بود.

خرده خاطرات، زندگی ژوزه ساراماگو از زبان خودش و حالا هم زنده‌ام که روایت کنم، زندگی گابریل گارسیا مارکز(برای دوستان گابیتو😁) از زبان خودش... به اندازه آثارشون خواندنی و عالی‌ان.(منهای دوران جوانی‌اش، که اصلا به من چه://///)

مارکز زندگی پر فراز و نشیب و پرماجرایی داشت. نحوه روایتش عالی بود و بدون خستگی. جوری که داستان تو داستان میگفت و بعد برمی‌گشت به ادامه داستان اولش خیلی حرفه‌ای بود. ولی اینم بگم اونقدر که ۴۵۰ص اولشو پسندیدم، ۲۵۰ ص آخرش چنگی به دلم نزد.

موضوعاتی که در این کتاب توجه‌ام رو جلب کردن:

●الهام گرفتن عشق در روزگار وبا از زندگی عاشقانه پدر و مادرش~ و کلا همه‌ی کتابهاش الهام گرفته از زندگی خودش و اجدادش هستن.
●معروف بودن پدربزرگش(از طرف مادر)~ و حتی الهام گرفتن از زندگی ایشون در صدسال تنهایی~
●اولین داستانی که مارکز در زمان مدرسه خونده، هزار و یکشب بوده و معتقده بهترین داستان زندگیش بوده.

~زندگی آنچه زیسته‌ایم نیست، بلکه همان چیزی است که در خاطرمان مانده و آنگونه است که به یادش می‌آوریم تا روایتش کنیم.

الرواية عمل صعب، أن تروي، معناه أن تُوصل، لكن أن توصل ماذا؟ ولمن؟ وبأي كيفية؟ هنا تكمن الصعوبة.. فبوسعي هنا أن أروي، أن أروي أيّ شيء.. على سبيل المثال أنني الآن أكتب من جهاز لا أملكه، على طاولة لا أملكها، بجهاز كتابة يسمى "كيبورد" المكون من كلمتين تمزجان بين لفظة key و board، والاتي يعنون لوحة المفاتيح.. والسؤال الذي يراودني الآن هو، لماذا سميّت الحروف مفاتيح؟ لماذا لم تتكون الكلمة من كلمتها الانجليزية الاصلية letter، هل للاختيار بعدٌ تاريخي لم أطلع عليه حتى اللحظة أم هنالك بعد فلسفي هو أن الحروف مفاتيح تفتح أقفال الافكار المغلقة وتطرحها على قارئ هذه الحروف ومفكك الالغاز بمفاتيح حروفها. ربما هي مجرد ثرثرة مني، وربما هي "رواية".
قد أكون "خُلقت لأروي" وقد أكون مجرد فاشل يحاول الحذلقة بحروفٍ لا يملكها. ولكن بعض النظر عن هذا كله، ما هي أهمية "الرواية" ماهي أهمية فعل الرواية بحد ذاته، لماذا يرغب الإنسان في أن "يروي" أن يقول، أن يتحدث، أو أن يكتب. وزيادة على ذلك، يرغب في زيادة جمهوره القارئ، المُوصل لهم الرواية. بهذا الفن، فن "الرواية"، كلها أسئلة بالطبع لا يجيب عنها ماركيز، ولكنه يجيب عنها في الوقت ذاته، بفعل بسيط جداً -رغم تعقيداته الكثيرة والصعبة والتعجيزية للبعض-، وهو "الرواية"، في هذا الكتاب نواجه فعل الرواية بكل تجلياته وضوحاً، ويسطر لنا غابرييل غارسيا ماركيز رائعته، ويقول لنا بكل بساطة: عشت لأروي.

كلنا نعيش حياتنا بطريقة متشابهة للغاية في بساطتها،ولكن ما يجعلها حياة فريدة هو طريقة سردها وتذكرها،وهنا آمن ماركيز بمقولته بأن الحياة ليست ما نعيشه بل ما نتذكره والطريقة التي نروي بها هذه الذكريات،وعندما نقرأ سيرة كسيرة ماركيز فسنعرف أن أعماله المتميزة كانت نتاج حياة على قدر هذا التميز.

سجل ماركيز سيرته تلك وهو في الخامسة والسبعين من عمره ولابد لنا أن نشكر الإله على منحه لماركيز ذاكرة قوية كانت قادرة على تسجيل لحظات تلك الحياة الثرية،حياة رجل آمن بأن الكتابة هي الشئ الوحيد الذي يستحق الحياة لأجله فعاش لأجله،ولم يتردد لحظة في ترك دراسة القانون رافضا ضغط أهله واستمر فيما أراد أن يكون هو.

مئة عام من العزلة:ذلك العمل الفذ في تاريخ الفنون الإنسانية،لم يكن إلا سرد مميز لمآسي حياتية تعرضت له عائلة ماركيز نفسه،فسجلها للخلود،ولم يكن الكولونيل الذي ينتظر من يكاتبه إلا جده،وقصة الحب الأسطورية في (الحب في زمن الكوليرا)لم تكن إلا قصة حب أبيه وأمه،كل حقائق صبغ ماركيز سحره فكانت واقعيته السحرة.

يبدأ ماركيز سيرته ذاكرة الأماكن ويقحم فيها ذكرى الإنسان بسلاسة وكعادته الجميلة يربطنا بكتاباته من أول سطر في الرواية ويصول ويجول في الشخصيات وخاصة أمه:ولا عجب أن لماركيز أم عظيمة كتلك والتي تستحق الخلود الذي خلّده له في أعماله.

بدأ السيرة بأمه وأنهاها بحبيبته ورفيقته(ميرثيدس)ومن هنا لا نعجب أن ماركيز يحب رفقة النساء ويفضلها عن أي جلسة أخرى.

مارکز در «زنده‌ام که روایت کنم» نه به دنبال خاطره‌گویی است، نه افشای رازهای شخصی؛ او آمده تا اثبات کند ادبیات، نه در تخیل صرف بلکه در بازآفرینی واقعیت متولد می‌شود. این کتاب اتوبیوگرافی نیست، بلکه مانیفستی است در ستایش قصه‌گویی، در تمجید از حافظه‌ای که از حقیقت، افسانه می‌سازد و از افسانه، حقیقت بیرون می‌کشد.

او به کودکی‌اش برمی‌گردد؛ به دهکدهٔ آراکتاکا، به خانه‌ای پر از زنان خرافاتی، سکوت پدربزرگی که بوی مرگ می‌داد و مادر بزرگ پرحرفی که مرز میان جادو و واقعیت را برمی‌داشت. این فضا، هستهٔ اصلی جهان داستانی مارکز است: «صد سال تنهایی» بدون این دوران وجود نداشت. اما در اینجا با فانتزی فاصله دارد. مارکز در جستجوی خاستگاه روایت است، نه زیبایی داستان.

این کتاب برای آنان نوشته شده که هنوز به کلمه ایمان دارند، هنوز فکر می‌کنند زندگی را می‌توان دوباره نوشت؛ نه برای فرار، بلکه برای ماندن. برای بقا.

زنده‌ایم که روایت کنیم. حتی اگر هیچ‌کس نشنود. حتی اگر چیزی تغییر نکند. چون روایت، خود شکل دیگری از زندگی‌ست؛ و گاهی، تنها شکل ممکنِ آن.

Se avete già letto e apprezzato i libri di Márquez, sicuramente amerete anche questa autobiografia. Parla della sua infanzia fino agli anni in cui diventa un giornalista affermato e deve partire per la Svizzera come inviato speciale nel 1950 dopo aver ricevuto delle minacce di morte nel suo paese. Leggendo della sua famiglia numerosa, con alcuni componenti originali, e degli avvenimenti della sua vita, ci si rende conto da dove ha tratto ispirazione per scrivere i suoi romanzi. Anche questa autobiografia si legge quasi come un romanzo ed è molto scorrevole.
Ma è anche un libro sulla Colombia perché gli avvenimenti storici e politici s'intrecciano alla vita di Márquez e della sua famiglia. L'unica pecca è che si arriva soltanto fino al 1950 mentre invece mi avrebbe fatto piacere leggere anche degli anni successivi.

If you liked Márquez's books, then you have to read also this autobiography. Márquez talks about his childhood and goes till 1950 when he has to leave for Switzerland as a correspondent. He talks about his family, his country, his studies and the historical and political events are intertwined with his and his family's lives.
It is a flowing and enthralling read, and it's like reading one of his fictional works. Reading about his large family and some unique relatives, you understand from where he took inspiration to write his works.
The only weakness of this book is that it was too short. I would have liked to read more about his life while this one arrives only till 1950.

বইমেলায় বাতিঘরে গিয়েই এই বইটা ধাম করে চোখে লেগেছে। প্রথম কারণ, নাম। 'Living to Tell the Tale'এর বাংলা হয়েছে 'বেঁচে আছি গল্পটা বলব বলে'। কী অসাধারণ! মাথায় ঢুকে যায়। ইংরেজি নামটাই আমার খুব পছন্দ ছিল, বাংলাটা হয়েছে আরো ভালো। দ্বিতীয় কারণ, কভার। এতো ভালো হয়েছে লাল টুকটুক কভারটা!

বইটা যখন পড়তে শুরু করেছি, তখন খুব অবাক হয়েছি নিঃসঙ্গতা আর 'লিফ স্টর্ম'এর কিছু ঘটনার সাথে লেখকের জীবনে ঘটা ব্যাপারের মিল দেখে। কেন যেন এই ঘটনাগুলো আমার কাছে আরো বেশি অবাস্তব লাগছে এখন। উপন্যাসের মানুষগুলোকেও আরো অবাস্তব লাগছে। আসলে মার্কেজের জীবনের মানুষগুলোকেই কাল্পনিক চরিত্রের মতো লাগছে! নাকি আমরা সবাই এরকম? গল্পের ক্যারেক্টারের মতো? শুধু আমাদের নিয়ে গল্পগুলো কখনো লেখা হয় না? একটা অংশ ছিল, মার্কেজের নানা তাকে একটা অভিধান দিয়ে বলেন- "এই বই শুধু সব জানেই না, উপরন্তু কেবল এটাই কখনো কোনো ভুল করে না।"
অভিধান পেয়ে মার্কেজ নানাকে জিজ্ঞেস করেন ওই বইতে কতো শব্দ আছে। উত্তরে নানা বলেন, "সব।"
বলাবাহুল্য, আমার কাছে পুরো বইটা ফ্যাসিনেটিং লেগেছে। মাঝে কলম্বিয়ার পলিটিক্যাল অবস্থা নিয়ে বিশদ বিবরন আছে। এই অংশগুলো আমি ঠিক বুঝিনি। মার্কেজের সাংবাদিকতার অভিজ্ঞতা মুগ্ধ হয়ে পড়েছি। কিন্তু সবচেয়ে বেশি মুগ্ধ হয়েছি তাঁর মাকে নিয়ে পড়ে। কিছুক্ষণ পরপর শুধু মনে মনে বলছিলাম, What a life! What a life! শেষটা এতো পারফেক্ট ছিল এখনো খুশি খুশি লাগছে।

বুঝতে পারছি না বলা উচিৎ হচ্ছে কিনা তাও অনুবাদ নিয়ে একটা কথা, কিছু পরিচিত শব্দ ইংরেজি রেখে দেয়া হয়েছে যেমন- trio, multipurpose, drawing. এগুলো কিন্তু বাংলা করাই যেত। এমনিতে আমার কাছে অনুবাদ খুব ভালো লেগেছে। ইংরেজি অনুবাদ কিছুক্ষণ পড়েছি। তার চেয়ে বাংলাটা পড়তেই শেষ পর্যন্ত বেশি ভালো লেগেছে। দাগানো লাইনগুলো আরেকবার পড়ি এখন!

لو كان هناك نجمة سادسة و سابعة وعاشرة .. لما تردددت لحظة

إنه غابرييل جارسيا ماركيز.. الذي أحمد الله كثيراً أني عشت في الزمن الذي عاش فيه ليروي!


و بالرغم من أن هذه الرواية ليست رواية و إنما جزء حي من حياته و روحه.. إلا أنا كرهتُ جدا انتهائها و أؤمن تمام الإيمان أن هناك الكثير و الكثير الذي لم يكتب بعد و أريد و بشدة أن أعرفه...


يا مين يقول لماركيز أن يُكمل حكيه عن حياته لـ أجل النبــي

يعتبر "عشت لاروى" الكتاب قبل الاخر لي مع ماركيز بعد رحلة طويلة امتدت سنوات طوال أقرا فيها رواياته الطويلة و النوفيلات و مقالات و قصص قصيرة كثيرة فقدنا عددها

و يتبقي لي فقط مع الكاتب العظيم الذى سرق قلوب كل من اطلع علي اعمال فقط رائعته "الحب في زمن الكوليرا" التي اراني اتلكأ قليلا في البدء بها خشية من انقطاع سيل التواصل و خوفا من ان اغلاق الصفحة الاخيرة فيها يعني ببساطة موت ماركيز فعليا و لن يتبقي حينها الا نسخ اقل بهاء من اعادة قراءة لاعماله

و الان بعد ملحمة ال٦٨٠ صفحة التي دوخنا فيها ماركيز مع شرق البلاد و غربها و بين تشابكات قصته و اغوارها لا نرى الا انها كانت الخاتمة المناسبة و ان قراءة "عشت لأروى" يجب ان تكون في نهاية الاطلاع علي اعمال الكولومبي العظيم فعليا
لكن الامر المثير للاهتمام حقا ان ماركيز هنا لا يقدم لنا بداية او نهاية او حتي اقل نوع من الترتيب الزمني بس يكتب علي طريقة "التداعي الحر للذكريات" فيقدم بعضها علي بعض ... طريقة تبدو خلابة في الحكي الشفوى لكنها تبلبل القارئ ها هنا و تلزمه بقدر عالى -اعلي من اللازم؟!- من التركيز ، فالتنقل من فقرة لاخرى يغير فورا زمن و مكان الحدث و سن ماركيز وقت تلك الذكرى بعينها

و نحن القارئ المدمن لاعمال الاب الروحي للواقعية السحرية نتعجب من انه يهتم بتفاصيل عن اخرى تبدو لنا اكثر اهمية ، فمثلا ماركيز لا يهتم ابدا ان يروى لنا كواليس كتابته ل"مئة عام من العزلة" التي دوخت العالم و اجبرت نقاد رابطة العنق علي الغوص حتي الركبتين في العالم الشعبي نصف الخيالي ، بينما يصر ماركيز علي اخبارنا لتفاصيل مدرسته الداخلية او عشيقته الخلاسية او تفاصيل مقالاته اليومية و وقت عمله كناقد سينمائي
و نحن نرى ان الرواية الاكثر ذكرا خلال الكتابة الذى قارب السبع مئات من الصفحات هي "عاصفة الاوراق" التي لا تتصدر اعمال ماركيز من حيث الاهمية او الانتشار بل فقط من حيث الترتيب الزمني للروايته الاولي الحقيقية ... بينما لا نلمح ذكر لرائعته "خريف البطريرك" سوى مرة واحدة عابرة جدا بشكل لا يتساوى مع ما تراه كتابة تلك الكلمات اهم و اكثر ما كتب ماركيز تعقيدا و تقنية

و طبعا هنا تتصدر مشكلة "النهاية" غير الموجودة ... فالصفحة الاخيرة من "عشت لاروى" مبتورة و كأن صفحاعدت كثير بعدها قد فقدت او تلفت ، و لولا ترجمة صالح علماني العظيم و ثقتنا في "دار المدى" -و مراجعة للنسخة بالانجليزية- لقلنا ان الكتاب ناقص

لكننا ما ان نودع كل تلك الانتقادات و نترك الراوى يروى روايته و تفضيله الشخصي لما هو مهم و ما هو اضافي ، سنرى كيف كانت عين ماركيز استثنائية كفاية لان تصنع من عالمه شديد الواقعية لمسة من عالم أخر

سنرى كيف ان رحيل شركة الموز -التي كتب لها ماركيز خلود لم تتوج به ابدا اي شركة رأسمالية في العالم- عن بلدة الجد البعيدة أخدت كل شئ: المال ، نسمات يناير ، سكين تقطيع الخبر، رعد الساعة الثالثة مساءا، اريج الياسمين، و حتي الحب ... بينما لم يترك سوى اشجار اللوز المعفرة و أناس مكفهرين فتكت بهم الذكريات

و نحن نستمتع بالفصول الاولي التي تحكى عالم جدة و جد كاتبنا الكولومبي الكبير ، نرى فيه نواه صغيرة لعالم سحرى تسوده النساء اتاح له الشعور دائما بالراحة و الامان وسطن باعتبارهن عماد حماية العالم بينما يشبع الرجال فيه الفوضي بهمجيتنا التاريخية ... و حلمه القديم ان ��كون واقعي كالجد و سحرى كالجدة يتمتع بمزية الامتياز الخارق لنزع الاسنان ليلا و وضعها في كوب بدل من فرشها حتي الدماء

و نرى رواية "عن الشياطين و اشياء اخرى" في ذكرى عابرة لصحفي روى له عن فتاة يطول شعرها بعد الموت ، و نرى ان "مئة عام من العزلة" ولدت من رحم رواية "البيت" المجهضة التي كان سيكتبها ماركيز عن حرب الالف يوم عن اسرة لا تخرج من بيتها قط ... و نرى كيف ولدت "قصة موت معلن" من قصة واقعية اقسم ماركيز الا يكتبها الا بعد وفاة ام القتيل

و نرى ان تفصيلة البدلة الخضراء المخملية التي يرتديها الطفل في "عاصفة الاوراق" حقيقة مطابقة لزى الطفل ماركيز نفسه ولا أخر ... و عن ولادة الجنرال "بوينديا" من مزيج خارق بين جد ماركيز و جد زميل اخر ... و حبكة "ليس لدى الكولونيل من يكاتبه" من امل الاسرة الابدى في معاش عسكرى

لكننا نرى كيف ان قراءته ل "دونيا باربارا" ل جييجوس ضمنت له الفوز برضا امه و جاره القديم عن كونه كاتبا ، و ان "عوليس" جيميس جويس كانت انجيل جديد يسبر اغواره بلا ملل ، و ان "السيدة دلووى" ل فيرجنيا وولف جاءته مع وعد انه سيحفظها عن ظهر قلب ، و "الصخب و العنف" لفوكنر كانت وقود حركته الاولي ، و ان نهاره الاول بعد قراءة "المسخ" ل كافكا كان ليس كأى نهار ، و ان "الف ليلة و ليلة" تركته مبهور مقطوع الانفس
و ان "دون كيشوت" لم يرى فيها سوى كوميديا بائسة الا ان وضعها في حمامه الي جانب نظافته الشخصية فتحولت بفعل حركات قولونه الي متعة ساحقة ، و عن "اربع سنوات علي متن نفسي" ل ادوارد ثالاميا التي فتحت أفاق اما جيل بأكمله ، و ان "القرين" ل دوستوفيسكي التي حاول سرقتها من المكتبة العامة و لم يستطع و جعلته يتلهف بجنون لقراءتها الي ان اهداها اليه غريب عابر ، و عن "موبي ديك" ل ملفيل انه كان الاستثناء الوحيد الذى يستحق الانضمام للادب الاثيني ، و عن "البيت ذو الاسقف السبعه" ل ناثانيال هورثون التي اثرت به مدى حياته

و نحن نرى ان ماركيز كون شخصيته -في عز فقره- من كتب مستعارة ، متجولا بلا مكتبة الا من توصيات الاصدقاء و توفير المكتبات العامة ... و نحن نرى فيه مثالا اخر و جرس انذار ان الكتب ليست رفاهية و ان اسعار كتب اليوم ربما خنقت -او في طريقها- موهبة ماركيز اخر

لكن ماركيز يظل كما هو ... ولد ليروى و عاش حياته ليتأمل كثيرا و ينطق ب هذيانات يجن لها جنوننا من فرط بساطتها و شدة تعقيدها و اصالتها المطلقة ... اما كيف امتص ماركيز العالم من حوله في احداث و كتب تماما مثل اسفنجة و يفككها الي اجزاء فعندما يرويها للاشخاص انفسهم فتتملكهم الحيرة ، كيف يحول العادى و الشائع الي حدث استثنائي مبتكر اصيل فهذا سر عبقرية الكاريبي الساحر التي يمكن لقارئ "عشت لأروى" ان يلمح طيفه من بعيد ... قليل و شاحب لكن كافي

Indiferent dacă îți place sau nu Marquez - și n-ai cum să nu-l apreciezi dacă ești un cititor de literatură - experiențele/evenimentele redate în volumul ăsta, într-un mod natural și sincer (forma în care memoriile sunt cel mai bine prezentate, din punctul meu de vedere), sunt ca niște pietre prețioase pescuite din râu.
Avem privilegiul de-a urmări dezvoltarea lui Marquez ca scriitor, care ne povestește și despre dezamăgirile lui literare, nu doar despre reușite, despre felul în care l-a format cariera de jurnalist, ne face martori la evenimente istorice care-au măcinat Columbia în acea perioadă etc.
O singură dezamăgire am avut la finalul cărții – faptul că Marquez n-a reușit să scrie o continuare, așa cum își propusese.

মার্কেজ যে জাদুবস্তবতার সাথে আমাদের পরিচয় করিয়ে দিয়েছেন তা নিছক কোনো কল্পনাপ্রসূত ঘটনাবলী না। মার্কেজ তার গোটা জীবনটাই কাটিয়েছেন জাদু আর বাস্তবতার মাঝে। জীবনের বিচিত্র সব অভিজ্ঞতা নিপুণ হাতে তুলে ধরেছেন তার বিভিন্ন লেখায়। এ বই পড়লে জাদুবাস্তবতাকে আর অবাস্তব ব্যাপার মনে হবে না।

আরো একটা বই "আবারো পড়তে হবে" এবং "বারবার পড়তে হবে" লিস্টে যোগ হলো।

I will finish this book in a week's time, but I am inspired to write the review now. Perhaps it is only fitting that my future ties in with my present...though I fail to see for the moment how my past is involved with this book, perhaps melancholy dreams with instruct me.

There is a moment in this book where Gabito meets the "insatiable reader". It is on a boat trip to Bogota to apply for a government scholarship for college. He sees the man at a seat, reading book after book on all kinds of erudite topics. The scene left a deep impression on me. Perhaps because I was sitting at a bench in front of Omura castle as the late-day sun was casting a yellowish glow on Omura bay. Suddenly, miraculous things occurred to me. The most obvious was that I had become the "insatiable reader"! I was living a romantic's dream of living by the water, free time there to be had, at least for now, and a good book to be read. The other was that my life was no less romantic than Gabito's. After all, things were as strange as in his imagination. Gabito writes of Love in the Time of Cholera.

I am the insatiable reader in the time or Corona.

I sit alone, in a kind of empty landscape, with the few scattered people wearing medical masks on their faces. I think about the clear water of Gabito's hometown that washed over polished stones as I look up to the high tower of Omura castle, where a modern light of purple begins to shine on it so that tourists (who cannot come because of the disease) can take pictures at night. Thirty minutes before the sun sets for good, I will read three more pages and then depart early because a sunset seems too sentimental for this old soul to bear at the moment.

It is the boat trip to Gabito's university that most captures my imagination. "Each voyage taught great lessons about life that connect us in an ephemeral but unforgettable way to the life of the towns we passed through, and many of us became forever caught up in their destinies." Here, once again, we see Marquez at his best, as he uses exaggeration, embellishment, truth, and the weaving of past, present, and future to make the world as real as fiction will allow. I read this passage in between my walks along Omura bay. What struck me was how marvelous some structures were -- the city hospital with its helicopters, and yet how simple other establishments were -- the old sandwich shop that was not too far from the hospital. It seemed impossible to me that the little shop could make any money. And right next to the modern hospital were two buildings of apartments that seemed condemned, overgrown with weeds. I saw the train pass along the coast as I walked, its cars mostly empty because of the virus that was keeping us mostly at home and I thought, 'We live in time no stranger than any other.'

And yet, if I can tie the past, present, and future together with an insatiable love for humans, language, and self, then perhaps I can pay homage to everything Gabito stood for. The randomness that defines our existence, the insatiableness of human curiosity and spirit, the deep beauty in even the most absurd tragedies...that is the legacy of a life, any life, a proliferation of stories that make a moment on a voyage on a great river...or a walk along Omura Bay...

And I hope I will live to tell the tale!

En este libro autobiográfico Gabriel García Márquez comienza narrando pasajes de su clan familiar, principalmente de sus padres y abuelos. Termina justo cuando lo enviaron de corresponsal a Europa en el diario El Espectador.

Soy consciente que para el disfrute del libro se debe tener un gusto y conocimiento de su obra, para entender cómo se formó su pasión, su forma de escribir y como muchos de sus personajes de cuentos y novelas eran a la larga seres de carne y hueso.

En Colombia han desaparecido los viajes por río (los hay muy reducidos en la Amazonia y la Orinoquía) y tren, creo que por esta razón fue especial leer la odisea que era llegar desde la Costa Caribe hasta Bogotá, días de navegación por el Río Magdalena y luego en tren para llegar a la Estación de la Sabana en la capital. 

En ocasiones se lee como un libro de viajes porque GGM fue nómada siempre, su trasegar hasta lugares recónditos (para la época) como La Guajira vendiendo enciclopedias, itinerante especialmente en su labor de periodismo y reportaje, siendo las páginas sobre el departamento del Chocó las más inspiradoras, donde se siente lo remoto y mágico del lugar.

Luego de su paso por el colegio en Zipaquirá, sus primeras lecturas, como golpeo a su espíritu del Caribe su llegada a la nevera, la triste Bogotá, en la que siempre parecía llover y todos iban vestido de negro, la asistencia a las reuniones en el Café El Automático, cuando conoció a León de Greiff y Zalamea Borda, y la batalla en la que se enfrentó con sus padres para dejar la carrera de derecho.
 
De esta época siendo lo más lucido quizás su relato del Apocalipsis de "El Bogotazo" el 9 de abril de 1948, cerca a la esquina del Café El Molino, su café favorito, lugar de tertulias literarias que GGM frecuentaba, donde mataron al líder popular Jorge Eliécer Gaitán, heridas que heredamos y aún permanecen en el alma nacional de los colombianos de un modo u otro.  

Su huida de Bogotá a Cartagena llevando solo lo que tenía puesto, ya que su pensión fue incendiada en el barrio La Candelaria, epicentro de los desmanes que destruyeron el centro de la ciudad y su llegada a "La Heroica" casi como un mendigo, sus lecturas de Kafka, de Faulkner, la vida bohemia, lo importante que fue en su proceso creativo las amistades, en especial la de Cepeda Samudio con sus recomendaciones de estilo, que entre tomar trago y la parranda, se mezclaban las charlas literarias y cinéfilas...

Y todo esto ambientado con la pobreza que tuvo que afrontar, los cuchitriles donde se quedaba, los recuerdos banales y felices de la niñez, cuando los ojos de aquella muchachita lo encandilaron por primera vez... 

Con lo agobiante que a veces es vivir en uno de los países más desiguales, violentos y corruptos de la tierra (según índices de estudios internacionales), me reconcilia un poco con mi nacionalidad saber que a pesar de todas las dificultades del mundo este señor aparezca en el billete de $50.000 pesos, veo como un milagro (perdón si esto se percibe como el más vergonzoso chauvinismo) que él sea unos de los escritores en lengua española más recordados a nivel mundial del siglo XX.

A slow memoir that I had been anticipating throughout the year as the finishing touch to my Márquez theme. It covers the early life of a starving, hungry, shy journalist, who slept in a whorehouse to save money, and was composing his first novel at night in the office of his newspaper, chain smoking. Márquez's life was not exactly harder then I realized, but there was more poverty and hunger. One of eleven children, plus some other half siblings through his philandering father, it seems he was the only one formally educated, being sent away to a boarding prep school. He was only accepted into his primary school because of discussion he had with the principal about 1001 Nights at about age 6.

Alas, he would go on to fail out of law school because of his obsession with writing. The sleepless nights full of prostitutes, and an incredibly well-educated milieu of colleagues, who he recounts in affectionate detail, make for a fascinating world. Generally well regarded, his was actually very insecure. At one point a friend rummaged through his trash and pulled out discarded stories and published them - these are important pieces in his Collected Stories. But the book ends before we have a real author. Instead it closes on a now professional and interesting columnist with just enough income to get by.

I have a memory of being fascinated by a review of this book when it came out, and wondering, for the first time, who Gabriel García Márquez was and what One Hundred Years of Solitude was about, or magical realism. A little naivety, mind you. But, it was nice to finally follow up and get here.

I generally read an autobiography because I already know the person's work or what they are noted for. In the case of Márquez the opposite was true. I had only just recently read Memories of My Melancholy Whores before plunging into this extremely boring story of his life. Almost immediately I tired of his memories and found little of interest to me. Not so much an exhausting exercise in pretension, though at times measurable, but rather a history of events I could not relate to and not at all important to me. Instead, I was hoping for more of an insight into his writing process and what moved him to compose what amounts to such an enormous body of work. Eventually I felt the need to abandon this book, but before doing so I skimmed to the end further discovering no change in his approach or subject matter. It was a relief to me to finally quit reading something so filled with what I consider fraudulent self-importance.

جادوگر کلمات ، گابریل خوزه گارسیا مارکز ، تا همیشه زنده ماند
شاید روح گابو برای ارواح سرگردان ، رویا بسازه
خیلی از نکات مربوط به داستانهاشو گفته بود و چیزی که خیلی خیلی چشمگیر بود صداقت بینظیر گابیتو بود.
سختی ها ، موفقیتها ، فقر ، ثروت و تمام لحظات و خاطرات دوران کودکی تا نوجوونیش رو با روایتی جذاب نقل میکنه
بعد از خوندن آثار مارکز و پی بردن به زحماتی که واسه خلق آثارش متحمل شده ، در این کتاب به صورت کاملا گویا و واضح نشون میده نویسنده شدن یکی از سختترین کارهای دنیاست.

نميدونم چندتا آدم همين الان در حال زندگي كردن هستن كه اگه زندگينامه شون رو مثل ماركز در هفتاد و پنج سالگي بنويسن همينقدر شگفت انگيز وخوندني ميشه
بعد ازخوندن اين كتاب فهميدم بخش زيادي از ماجراهاي كتاب صدسال تنهايي واقعي بوده و فقط فضاي داستاني خانواده وشخصيت ها رو ساخته، اتاق شصت لگن، ماجراي جنگ داخلي و اتفاقاتش و اون قطار كشته ها، دختر مجرد پيري كه كفن خودش رو ميدوزه و از زمان مرگش مطلعه و دختر بچه اي كه فقط گچ ديوار و خاك باغچه رو ميخوره و غيره و غيره

لا أستطيع على وجه الدقة تذكر الكُتّاب و الروائيين الذي قرأت لهم طوال السنوات المنصرمة من حياتي القرائية ، أعني أولئك الذين أعاصرهم الآن ، لأنني لم أكترث شخصياً لكونهم موتى في التُراب أم أحياء عليها ، كانت قرائتي لهم تكفي أحياناً لأشعر بهم أحياء في لحظات ، ثم موتى في لحظات أخرى ، - هذه طريقتي للعبث بالحيوات من حولي - على أية حال ، هذا الأمر لا ينطبق على " غابرييل غاريسا ماركيز ، لسبب ما صبحتُ أكترثُ لكوني أعاصره ، كنت أهمس لنفسي قائلة : لكم أنتِ محظوظة يا روح . لقد إستطعتِ على الأقل معاصرة ماركيز - وإن لم تكن معاصرةً تامة - بينما الأجيال القادمة لن تتسنى لهم هذه الفرصة - إنه الشعور ذاته لأننا لم نعاصر دوستويفيسكي - سيتناقلون فقط وجود كاتب كولومبي قد كتب عدة روايات مُذهلة و روى سيرته بشيء من التفصيل و الإسهاب المُذهلين في كتابه : عشت لأروي ، و إنتهت حياته بإعتزال الكتابة بسبب خرفٍ أصابه و أفقده عقله وودع قرائه بـ بتحية وداعية جميلة ! ، رُبما حينها تنقرض كُتبه إلا قليلاً ، و سيتدافع قُراء العالم بحثاً عنها، بينما بحوزتك أنتِ كتاب ثمين له لن ترضي بإعارته أبداً ، و ستحتفظين به في القبو أو في علية المنزل مع بقية الكُتب الورقية النادرة ، وتأذنين في نهاية المطاف أن تورث كتبك لأكثر أحفادك حُباً بالقراءة وولعاً بها ، وتأخذين عهد وفاء منه أن يحفظها بعيداً عن أعين المتطفلين ممن إدعوا أن عصر الورق و الكُتب الورقية قد انقضى إلى غير رجعة بينما هم يتراكضون للحصول عليها لأنها بطبيعة الحال أصبحت مواداً جيدة للمتاحف الأثرية .

تجاوزاً للمبالغات أعلاه ، ماركيز مُدهش بمَ يكفي ليجعلني أكتب مراجعتي له و أنا ما زلت أقرأ الكِتاب لرغبتي المُلحة في أن أكتب ما قد لا تتسنى لي كتابته لاحقاً حينما أنتهي ، غابرييل ماركيز الروائي الكولومبي الذي لم أقرأ له أياً من روايته حتى الآن رغم معرفتي المُسبقة بروايته الأكثر تداولاً على مسامعي : مئة عام من العزلة ، سرد في كتابه عشت لأروي حياته الصاخبة و تاريخ أجداده و والديه ببراءة طفل في قرية آراكاتاكا في كنف جديّه و إنتقاله إلى منزل والديه مُجدداً بعد أن وارى جسد جده التُراب ثم بروح شاب جامح مدمن للسيجار و الكتب في آن واحد ذو محاولات صحفية مع زُمرة من الأصدقاء " المجانين " الذين بسبب أسمائهم العصية على التذكر لاأستطيع تميزهم دون أحداثٍِ وصفات معينة أربطها بكل فرد منهم . ليصبح في نهاية عقده الثالث صحفياً مشهوراً مولعاً بالصحافة ومدمناً لها .
أصدقاء ماركيز كانوا العون الأكبر في حياته بالإضافة لـ طفولته مع جده و مراهقته وتنقالته الكثيرة بين المدارس و المدن الكولومبية بخلاف تأثير والديه اليسير جداً الذي اعترف بين سطورها بأنه لم يقضي معهما و مع أخوته العشرة الآخرين أكثر من ثلاث سنوات في أوقات متفرقة .

أحيا ماركيز خلال الصفحات شعوراً غريزياً في داخلي كنت قد أخمدته مُنذ بعض الوقت بالإلتفات لكل شيء من حولي كما لو أنه مادة جيدة للكتابة عنه ما دمتَ تمتلك القُدرة الأدبية لذلك و ألقى بين السطور عبارة أسطورية دعمت بها بعض قناعاتي و أزيد عليها في قوله : " علمتني الحياة نفسها أن أحد أكثر الأسرار فائدة في الكتابة ، هو تعلم قراءة رموز الواقع دون توجيه أسئلة " . رغبتُ لو أنني لم أحسم نجمة إلا أنني أريد أن أعترف بشعوري بالضجر في الفقرات المتفرقة التي ذكر فيها الأحداث السياسية و الثورية بين الحزب المحافظ والحزب الآخر الليبرالي في كولومبيا ولأنه بسبب الأسماء " الصعبة أيضاً " لم أستطع أن أربط الأحداث ببعضها فتتفرق لدي الطرق في السطور و أشعر بأنني بالكاد أتذكر ما قرأته لتوي بالإضافة أنني لم أوفق لمعرفة دقيقة بقصة الرئاسة المأساوية الذي جاهد ماركيز ليفهمنا إياها بين سطور كتابه ، على أية حال ، كان لهذه الأحداث تأثير في تنقلات ماركيز وحياته فكان مُجبراً على سردها .

شُكراً غابرييل غاريسا ماركيز لأن قرائتك كانت مُدهشة وملهمة و أنني لم أندم ، شُكراً صالح علماني لأن بفضل ترجمتك إستطعت أن أقرأه بلغة أدبية باذخة متقنة كل الإتقان. شكراً شكراً
