A new director. Budget cuts. And a fire. The senior center will never be the same again.
As the new director for the senior center, Raina Sun thought organizing a few events for the geriatric crowd would be fairly easy. Until the center’s biggest donor dies in a fire, and her grandma’s arch nemesis becomes the prime suspect. As the body count piles up, Raina is drawn into another murder investigation. Can she solve the case, or will her grandma’s arch nemesis spend the rest of her golden years in prison?
Anne R. Tan is a USA Today bestselling author. She writes the Raina Sun Mystery series, the Lucy Fong Mystery series, and the Cedar Woods Mystery series. Her humorous cozy mysteries feature Chinese-American amateur sleuths dealing with love, family, and life while solving murders. Her books feature diverse characters and relationships because everyone deserves to be an armchair detective.
A Note from Anne:
My books are my legacy to my children. Unfortunately, they would not grow up in the San Francisco Bay Area like I did. Without a cultural hub to keep the language and philosophies alive, our family would lose this part of our heritage in one generation. My children are visitors to this rich culture, just like my readers. At its core, I always felt Chinese culture is about family and community. I hope you’ll enjoy your time with Raina Sun, Lucy Fong, and their large dynamic family.
FAIR CRONIES AND FELONIES is another fun Raina Sun cozy mystery from Anne R. Tan. Raina and PoPo are great characters, the dialogue is natural, and the mystery keeps you guessing right up till the end.
The latest book in the Raina Sun series is quite a puzzle. A friend and member of the senior center where Raina is employed as Director is discovered dead after a fire breaks out in the kitchen. It is soon found to have been a murder. Raina, whose husband Matthew is in China on family business, tries to help detective Joanna Hopper find out who the murderer is. Because Alonso, the murdered man, was very wealthy the ones who are in line to inherit his money are the obvious suspects. However, it looks like someone is intent on killing the heirs, and since the Senior Center is a residual legatee, Raina as Director of the center becomes a suspect as well. When she thinks she has narrowed the suspects down to the obvious killer Raina plans to trap the killer with Po Po, her grandmother, and the posse of elderly residents' help. But the killer is certainly not who she expected.
Raina and Po Po don't get up to as many antics as usual, but the puzzle of the killer keeps the reader turning pages to find out who it is. I love this series and all the familiar characters. I highly recommend it and think you will enjoy learning about Chinese culture in this cozy series that offers intriguing mysteries without graphic violence, sex or bad language.
This series is one of my top favorite. When Raina and Po Po work together they will get the case solved. There will also be some laughter also when Po Po is around. She's like Batman with all her gadgets and she has her posse to help. It seems Raina is more accepting of her help now also. Raina is now Director of the senior center and plans activities for them. They were going to have a potluck dinner when the gas line in the area messes up. So the can't use the stove. Raina had Po Po put up signs so when the fire alarms sounded they were shocked. Raina tried to see if anyone was in the kitchen but there was to much smoke. She knew the centers biggest donor had went through the kitchen minutes before the alarms and she hoped he got out. Unfortunately he didn't and she wants to know who would kill one of the sweetest men she knew. There are a few suspects on her list but the surprise is when Po Po's arch nemesis becomes a suspect. They knew they needed to step in and solve this case. This book was great. I really loved it. There is never a dull moment when these two are on the case and they always get their man or killer. I voluntarily agreed to review this book. My review is my own honest opinion.
Raina Sun Louie is a Chinese American who is married to Mattew Louie, a detective. Matthew is away in China on family business. Raina is now the director of the Senior Center where her grandmother PoPo and other cronies hang out. They were preparing for a potluck dinner at the Center when problems arose with the gas line. Raina told PoPo to put out signs telling everyone they could not use the kitchen. Raina sees Alonso Escalante, a very wealthy patron of the Center answer a phone call and go into the kitchen. Shortly thereafter there is a fire in the kitchen. Raina tries to make sure everyone evacuates the Center but she cannot find Alonso. His body is discovered on the floor in the kitchen. They first thought he died of smoke inhalation but then discovered he had been murdered. PoPo talks Raina in to investigating the murder. There are many suspects .... residents of the Center, Alonso's family, his ex-wife, his ex-partner .... The characters have developed so much in this series. I love the interaction with Raina and PoPo ... the laughter, PoPo'a antics, her bottomless bag of tricks. This is a great series by Anne R. Tan -- a must read!! I received an advance copy. This is my honest review.
Fair Cronies and Felonies the 10th book in Anne R. Tan’s Raina Sun Mystery Series. Even though this is the 10th book in this series it can be read as a standalone but I would highly recommend reading the rest of the series. It’s been a while between books and I was happy to read this but now I want to go back and reread the rest. I did not want to put this book down and read well past my bedtime. I loved how the author described everything so vividly I was able to visualize and feel everything that was going on. This is very well written has well developed and likable characters that you can’t help but fall in love with. I felt like I was right there with the characters. It is a wonderful book that will have you laughing and help give you some reprieve from this 2020 pandemic. Another wonderful mystery that will keep you guessing. I can’t wait for the next book.
Alonso is kind, generous and perfectly lovely. Having lived abroad most of his life, he made his millions selling a patent on a special glue and now visits the senior in his retirement. But having millions also attracts its share of unsavoury characters - the employee who invented the glue in the first place, the ex-wife who refused to admit he divorced her, the good-for-nothing son who spends more than his allowance...........
i always enjoy Anne's books and this is no exception. PoPo is not up to too many hijinks this time (well, let's not talk about the toilet incident!!) but I love that she is such a spunky lady and so totally supportive in Raina's camp and of course her posse of helpers are the best! Just proves that age really does not matter! (Heartening for an OAP like me)
Raina Sun Louie is a Chinese American married to a police detective (who is away visiting relatives in China) and PoPo is her Chinese grandma who has no filters and gets into more trouble than a group of grandsons. Raina is the director of the Senior Center where her PoPo and all her cronies hang out (which is challenge enough!). One of the nicest gentlemen gets murdered just when the facilities water system is out of service and it seems that he died in a fire in the community kitchen. The man was very wealthy, so the suspects come crawling out of the woodwork and PoPo takes on the business of dragging Raina into solving the case. Let the madness intensify! LOVED it!
This is Fair Cronies And Felonies, book 10 in the Raina Sun Mystery series written by Anne R Tan. You will LOVE every story about Rainy and Po Po and how they always seem to get theirselves into trouble. Rainy is helping the detective try to solve a case while Matthew is out of town. Can she do that without putting herself and PoPo into the middle of the case? There is never a dull moment when Rainy and the entire senior citizen crew join up to find the killer!
Raina’s new job at the Senior Center is off to a bumpy start. The local government has cut the Center’s budget, her grandma (Po Po) and Po Po’s arch nemesis are having a fight. Just as that brouhaha may turn to blows the fire alarm sounds. Once the fire is out a body is discovered in the burned kitchen. Raina and Po Po set out to set right what’s gone amiss.
Anne R Tan does it again with another winner in the Raina Sun Mystery series. Raina and her grandmother team up again to solve the murder of the Senior Center's benefactor.
As always this was hit out if the park! Po po and Raina were on the trail in this latest book. The pair were working on a special effort to help the Senior Center. What follows is a well written wonderful adventure!
It's been a while since the last Raina Sun book, although now that she's married, she's added another last name. Since Matt, her husband is on a pilgrimage to China, it's just Raina and Po Po, and that's good enough for me. Not that he isn't missed, but this time Raina has to navigate her position with the official police, in the form of an incompetent detective and her husband's jealous partner, all on her own. This book is more of a classic mystery. Raina and Po Po still push the envelope on getting into trouble, but the plot is complex enough to be worthy of Agatha Christie. The Senior Center that Raina now runs perfectly stands in for the mansion or castle with a locked door mystery. I believe Agatha would love this book. But I can only speak for myself, and I know I did. Po Po so reminds me of my own grandmother, who was also full of mischief and sometimes outrageous behavior, although never to Po Po's extent. The main difference is that she substituted matzo balls for dim sum, but the love for her granddaughter and for justice is the same. If you haven't read the other books in the series, lucky you, because you're going to want to read them as soon as you can. Or reread them if it's been a while. The experience is always worth it, especially these days. Who can't use a good laugh? It made my day!
Hooray another Raina and Po Po book. Raina has a job where Po Po lives and of course everyone loves her. Po Po and her neighbor fight constantly and one day when there is going to be a get together the kitchen isn’t working so people have to bring food warmed up. Raina goes to try to calm the ladies down and her friend gets a phone call and heads to the kitchen to answers it. A fire breaks out and everyone has to get outside. As they are counting the only one missing is the friend who got the hone call, they thought he went out the back door but when they got into the kitchen that isn’t what happened. Someone is trying to kill several people so how will Raina without the help of her husband solve this case. Po Po and her gang is always ready to help. They are so much fun to read about—I definitely recommend this book and hope everyone loves it as much as I do.
As the new director for the Seniors' Centre, Raina is expected to keep thing s running smoothly - no matter what. Apart from Po Po and her arch nemesis arguing as usual, it was going well until their biggest financial donor is found dead in the kitchen after a fire is started in that kitchen. After the and autopsy reports come in, it turns out that he died from a blow to the head and the fire was set as a cover-up. Seemingly, Janice (Po Po's arch nemesis), had been dating the deceased secretly and everyone personally involved with the man were on the suspect list. Raina was asked to help on the case by the newly minted detective, who wanted to prove herself to her boss. As she always liked to investigate anyway, Raina agrees. However, as the case goes on, Raina finds that things may be complicated than she anticipated.
Fair Cronies and Felonies: A Chinese Cozy Mystery is the 10th book in the Raina Sun Mystery Series. I have read every book in the series and this one is just as good and as much fun as all the others in the series. Raina and her Grandmother, PoPo, (still my favorite character!) have another murder to solve, this time the victim is a favorite visitor and benefactor to the town's senior rec center.
Raina, PoPo and the Posse Club are on the case... where the chaos never ends! So grab your copy because the characters are so colorful and delightful. Anne also does a magnificent job of weaving the Chinese culture all throughout her stories. Plus this crime solving crew is so hilarious that you laugh out loud!
I look forward to each new book in the Raina Sun series and this one does not disappoint! Raina is back, now she is the director of the Senior Center and in addition to all of her director duties, she is acting as referee to her grandmother Po Po, and Janice Tally (Po Po’s sometime arch nemesis). Then there is a fire – is it arson? A dead body – is it murder? A missing person – is it kidnapping? Po Po and Raina gather the Posse Club (a small group of PoPo's senior friends) together again to find the answers. I highly recommend this book – and this whole series is great fun reading and I know you will enjoy it.
Another wonderful adventure with Raina and PoPo! Lots of good possibilities, but I never did guess the villain in this one. Good, strong storyline. More fun now that Raina is working at the Senior Center. I liked how all of the characters fit together. This is a stand-alone story, but I recommend starting with the first in the series. You will get to know Raina and her grandmother and learn how their partnership-in-crime started!
Raina and Po Po are in the midst of another murder! This time someone has caused damage to the Senior Center too and the hot meals program is at risk. While Matthew is away fulfilling family duty, they need to help the new police detective catch this killer. A well written, clean story. Lots of humor and fun characters with some Chinese traditions to keep your interest.
This is a series I enjoy reading and I look forward to each new book that comes out. The Chinese American culture is interesting to read about. The characters are well drawn and the plot moves along nicely. There’s always a bit of humor in these cozy mysteries, as well, which adds to the fun read. Recommended. I received a copy of this book from the author. I am voluntarily leaving a review.
I enjoy this series. It has a good mystery and lots of humor. Raina has a posse of senior citizens to help her solve a murder. She needs to solve a murder, put up with an insurance adjuster in this story. My favorite character is her grandmother .
I read this for a challenge for a book with a Grandma for a main character. Since this was book #10 in a series I have not read, I didn't really know the characters and things were not given a recap. I guess it was ok.
