I thoroughly enjoyed this quick, entertaining book chronicling the career of “The Big Train” Walter Johnson. It’s one of the installments in the Newfield Baseball Legends series, a very nice collection for anyone interested in learning a little about old-time ball players. These are books of roughly 60 pages each that give the highlights of each player's career, and a smidgeon of biographical information. I’m guessing they were written and marketed toward middle-school-age folks as an introduction to the baseball greats of yesteryear. What I liked about this book in particular was that it had plenty of information about Johnson, along with tidbits about what the game was like in the 1920s. It also mentions quite a few of Johnson’s contemporaries. I was well pleased with the amount of information given in so few pages. Another fine addition was the photographs. They were of really nice quality, and some that I’d never seen. Jack Kavanagh’s writing was smooth and engaging. I’d recommend this book to anyone interested in baseball, especially those wanting to begin delving into baseball’s glorious early years.
